Gary Clark, Jr.

Gary Clark, Jr.

Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “I listen to everything…so I want to play everything.”  The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. Anyone who gravitated towards Clark’s, 2011’s Bright Lights EP, heard both the evolution of rock and roll and a savior of blues.

Gary Clark Jr. is an incredible musician, and puts on a great live show. His improvisation on stage makes it a very unique experience compared to his recordings. He clearly puts himself into the music, and he has a very talented band. Opening act Michael Kiwanuka was very talented as well, and an excellent complement musically. If you like the blues at all, he is a must see.

He's a tremendously talented player. But he set a groove his band couldn't follow. The bass drowned out Gary's lead. The audience was there to hear him not somr thumping bass. Mixing was poor. The highlight was Gary's version of 3 O'clock Blues. Not even BB himself could play it with more soul. The phrasing ws brilliant. He needs a band that can play at his level and let him lead.

I was very excited to see him for the first time, and I wasn't disappointed. His cover of Muddy Waters/Jimi Hendrix' Catfish Blues was a highlight. His guitar playing is very engaging. I would say he could use the stage more.

One of if not the best show i've ever saw. This guy is crazy good and his band is incredible too. Got there early and met all of them they're all really cool laid back people. Plan on going every time they come to town. Just glad and honored to have went before this guy really blows up and starts playing arenas. This guy was made to play live you can see the passion and energy he plays with.

this man is beyond amazing. he is the only true blues voice left, at least with their name out there. i saw him at Bonnaroo 2011, but this was something completely different. He had amazing energy and emotion, innovation with how he played, and most of all he shredded and jammed the whole time. The overall sound of the band was basically perfect, they were all right right there with his energy, and Gary's voice is as good or better live than it is recorded. I could not have asked for more.

Gary Thank You for putting on a fantastic show in Atlanta last night!! I have not been this blown away since I saw Jimi Hendrix in 1969.You are so versatile with your vocals and playing it's hard to believe one musician can do all the things you do. By looking at the packed house last night I'm not the only one. It was truly a magical experience . I hope you come back soon!! To the ground breaking legend I salute you!!

This was my 4th time to see Gary Clark Jr this year and each time it's better and better. He creates such an incredible energy that you get lost in his awesome guitar and vocal skills. I've tried to explain his effect to my friends but they just don't get it til they see him. And what an experience to see others feel him for the first time. It's like seeing kids open christmas presents!

Gary Clark, Jr. gave a stunning performance this week at the Variety Playhouse. Raw talent, bone-chilling blues, and crazy good guitar playin' kept the crowd screaming for more. This is a show I will never forget! If you were to take the DNA from the late and greats Hendrix and SRV, put them in a cocktail shaker, add some blues and mix it up, you'd get a Gary Clark, Jr. martini. Delicious!

If you don't know him yet, you will soon enough. Second time seeing this incredibly talented artist, and I was even more impressed this time around, although I'm not sure how that is possible. His intimate performances allows for audience interaction and its clear that he is not just a rare talent but also a genuinely cool guy. Run away drum and guitar solos from Gary's fellow band members leave you in awe. Get your tickets to see him at a small venue before he's headlining for the Black Keyss...because it won't take long before you know his name.

Was lucky enough to see two of my favorite musical artists, Michael Kiwanuka and Gary Clark Jr on Saturday night at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.... They were both high energy and just incredible! I only wish I could have gotten closer to the stage.... But it was a sold out show and unless we got there super early, we were out of luck. Luckily the sound system was incredible and we were able to hear and see them from afar!

What's he doing playing a show at The Tabernacle? Duh, it was sold out. He could have sold out 2 more nights also. So glad he played this venue though, it's one of the best in Atlanta along with Variety Playhouse and Fox. Like hearing Hendrix playing BB King. Gary Clark Jr. doesn't play the guitar, he assaults it!

Gary Clark Jr was fabulous! The whole show from start to finish was right on. We love The Tabernacle as a venue. The sound was great. The only reason it wasn't a 5 star review was it was a bit warm and with all the people (it was packed!) the air needed to be running more!

Professional performance. The band was strong but Jr. was clearly the star of show. Excellent stage presence , crisp transition from songs to next , heavier guitar work was most excellent. Gary Clark Jr opened for Tom Petty on 5/2 and just killed it. he was amazing! ever single song he did was good but "when my Train Pulls in" was one of the best live performances i have seen. I could have went home after Gary's set and been happy with the night. The guitarist playing with Gary ( Eric "King" Zapata) added so much to the performance. I think his performance is what made the overall show better than the two other Gary Clark shows that i have seen. Go and be amazed!!!

This was my first time to hear Gary Clark,Jr live. I have enjoyed his music on Pandora and downloaded music based on what I heard. That's kinda the point isn't it? The concert started right on time, with no opening act. I was right down front almost dead center and was ready for some scorching blues guitar riffs. The people around me were ready also, but it was not to be. There were a few times that I though, "Oh boy! Here we go!", but it was fleeting. After reading fabulous reviews from previous shows and paying $95.00 for a ticket, the show was a letdown. I wonder if he was ill since he didn't move much and didn't seem to have any energy. The crowd was ready...we were on our feet..but we got nothin' much to respond to.

I saw Gary Clark Jr again at Winstar. I loved the concert and my seats were 3 rows back in VIP. The accoustics in that venue are not the best, but its about the auditorium not the band. Also, to get anywhere in that casino you must walk through smoke. The smoke is too much. I loved seeing the band however.

If you get the chance to see Gary Clark Jr. in a smaller venue like the House of Blues or one of his favorite local clubs in Austin, buy tickets immediately!!! I had missed GCJr at the House of Blues in Dallas a few times, and Winstar was my last chance to catch him in 2016 at the tail end of his summer touring. The sound in Winstar was mediocre (better than Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie), but not mind-blowing. Gary's guitar was frequently quiet in the mix and only sometimes got turned up. The Winstar Global Events center feels like a convention center converted to a concert hall for a happy hour, fills with smoke from the casino, has no character, and attracts a strange crowd. Worst of all, Winstar cut Gary's set to exactly 1hr, 30min, which is barely long enough for Gary to get warmed up. Apparently an early curfew is common at Winstar.

I went to see Gary with my husband, who's a huge fan of his. Prior to the show I had only listened to a few of his songs and seen him once on TV. I have been to many concert in my life spanning fine decades. He is a masterful guitarist, exudes swag and soul and fills the entire stage with his presence. He is now easily in the top three concerts of my life, who include U2, and Plant and Page's Zoso tour.

I went to this concert because it was a birthday gift for my husband. I heard a little bit from Gary and liked him well enough, but going to this concert made me a fan. We sat in the fourth row and the view was soooooo amazing, the sound was great and the bar was inside the hall so I didn't have to leave the viewing area to get a drink. Gary didn't talk too much wth the crowd which I kind of like in between sets but that's ok his music was awesome had a lot of soul and he put his live version twist on them too so it didn't sound like you were listening to the cd. Their is a particular song that sound more like a R&B song but like he put a different swagger to it. I didn't even recognize it at first. Pretty cool that he can do that and still sound great. I suggest if there is anyone coming to this venue that you want to see pay whatever to get there. It was a great night and also won a little something at the blackjack table. Win, Win!!!! Original seats were in section c row v, but a mother and son were trying to give their tickets away because part of their party was unable to make it. We asked if we could use their tickets and we would pass on ours. ( they were having a hard time finding someone to take the tickets). We were running into the same problem but then we found a couple who only had one ticket and needed one more. So we gave them ours. It was meant to be. Then saw Gary walk through the casino after concert. He seemed cool stopped an shook hands and talked to a bunch of people.

Gary Clark Jr was fantastic last Friday evening at Harrah's unfortunately the venue was not as good. Gary Clark Jr played and amazing set for about 2.5 hours. He rocked the house with songs that all had a different spin on the blues. Unfortunately the venue packed in the seats too tight. When standing your stomach touches the seat in front of you and the back of your calves touch the front of your chair. I am 5'9" 165lbs, not a big person and this was very tight! They even sold seats far to the right and left close to the stage so those poor people had no view at all. The room is a flat ballroom with portable bleachers in the back. The reverb and bass distortion was aweful. We were second row center and I couldn't understand a word Gary said all night even when the room was quiet and he spoke to the crowd. Loved the Hotel, Casino, Resturants and grounds, will not be back for another show unless they build a music venue and take the sound into consideration.

Gary Clark Jr. is by far the most interesting artist I've seen in years. He is totally original yet you can hear all of his influences. He's a combination of Chuck Berry, Bernard Allison, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Watters, Paul Rodgers, Lenny Kravitz, to name a few. He is one of the rare artists that seem to be playing what they want and not what the public wants.

The last-minute venue change at Monday nights show didn't seem to shake the anticipation oozing from the crowd eager to see Gary Clark Jr., most for the first time. The mutterings from the second balcony of the warm cozy and clean Wilbur, conveyed that it was a nice venue: "we get to sit down in seats", "...wicked civilized in here", was heard from one of the downstairs urinals. It was more enjoyable then standing up all night in black-box type of club (Royale). This venue seem to suit the show a little bit better anyway on a cold mid-November holiday weekend. The overpriced Harpoon IPA's were served by friendly bartenders as was the staff of the Wilbur. The two opening act's faired well with the discerning audience. Max Frost, the first act from Nashville- very talented musicians but haven't quite found their voice as artists. They were trying to do a little bit too much musically- across too many genres. For instance, using a drum machine on one tune which gave their roots based country rock a poppy modern flavor. The second act, Wild Feathers were stronger singers, stronger tunes and were more connected as artist but they were just too many songwriters and one band it almost seemed like a mishmash of songwriters that teamed up to form a supergroup- too many guitars and it was confusing who the audience was supposed to focus on. Speaking of looking at the artist onstage, the lighting people at the Wilbur should be fired immediately. There was no spotlight and stage lights only backlit the band so that you could not see the faces of the musicians at all, which was pretty annoying the whole night including when Gary Clark Jr. came on. The other not-so-great part was the sound and that the balance of sound was really bad. The drums were none-existent in Gary's set. I went downstairs to say something to the sound person, "I cannot hear a backbeat at all!". He looked annoyed but fixed it, because the 2 & 4 snare suddenly became a presence. Drummer Johnny Radelat was it was strong and solid on the drums despite the limitations of the sound engineers. Guitarist King Zapata, had a more piercing tone but ripped some amazing amazing solos and Gary was happy to share the stage with him. Johnny Bradley was rock solid on the bass. Gary made the best of a bad night and played with tremendous depth and emotion. Highlights of the night were Gary's version of Catfish Blues, and If You Love Me Like You Say/Third Stone from the Sun, which he ripped a beautiful solo over a nice big groove, slower than Hendrix's version. Mr. Clark is still enjoying his popular hit Bright Lights, as was the crowd which sang loudly to the authentic, roots/blues original.

Soulful, sexy, smooth, and seriously talented. Been a fan for years, this was my first time seeing him live and he was everything I'd imagined. What a fantastic guitarist and vocalist! Sound is always great at the Summer Stage.

Very much enjoyed the whole show from Tangiers Blues Band to Michael Kiwanuka to finally Gary Clark Jr. Great blues guitarist. I have had him on my list of acts to see for a while and will admit that I was not disappointed. Highly recommend going to see see him. Hope he comes back to the pony and i hope to see him again soon.

One of the best concerts I've ever attended and one of the three best guitarists I've ever heard in person. The other two? Jimi Hendrix and Pat Metheny. Enough said.

Gary Clark Jr. is a phenomenal guitarist and entertainer. His show was a no bones about it show. Straight music with a talented rock, blues guitarist. No need to sit up there and talk. He understands that people are there to see him play and perform. It is a fusion type style and I have seen some HOF guitarist and as far as I am concerned this young man is another that I can add to my list. I love the venue that he chose to play in and seemed to fit his style. Well Done!

Fantastic show with some of the best guitar work I've ever heard! Gary is truly in the same league with Clapton, Hendrix and the other all-time greats. And it is a tribute to King Zapata, his rhythm guitarist, that he is able to go toe-to-toe with Gary throughout the show and doesn't get blown off the stage. The other members of the band are excellent too. See them in a club or concert hall setting while you can -- if there is any justice in the world, Gary will be filling arenas the next time he goes on tour!

Clark was unenthusiastic, much of the performance repetitive and forgettable.

Great show at the Uptown. Gary Clark Jr is a guitar virtuoso with an amazing voice. The combination of Texas-style blues with touch of soul and funk really engaged the audience.

Been listening to Gary Clark Jr. for the last couple of years now, so was really looking forward to seeing him live. Him & his band did not disappoint. He started with some upbeat tunes & by the time he played "When My Train Pulls In" his guitar was bleeding, he had worked it so hard. He played about an hour & 20 minutes, which I thought seemed kind of short, but then he came out for the encore & played about 8 more songs, which made it about a 2 hour set. Really enjoyed it, but then I do love his music.

2nd song guitar solo/shred melted my face right off. I would've walked out a happy man right then and there. Worth the price of admission for that five minutes of blissfulness. Gary Clark, Jr. is a force to be reckoned with- he embodies the spirits of Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Marvin Gaye and James Brown. His roots from Austin show up in a big way and I would highly recommend you see this man at least once in your lifetime. He will be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some day. I personally would see him anytime, in any city, in any venue to witness his greatness. He will take you on a ride- he is doing what he is meant to be doing in this world.

Both Gary Clark, Jr and his opening act, Carson McHone, are excellent performers. The disappointing aspect of both performances was the quality/level of the sound mix. All levels were so high, especially the bass guitar, it was nearly to the point of distortion. I am not talking about volume levels, but the overall mix. The lyrics, and nearly all dialogue, was unrecognizable. My wife and I love to go to live music performances, but this show was overall extremely disappointing. I don't believe it was a venue acoustics issue because the pre-recorded pre-show and intermission music was perfectly fine.

Gary Clark Jr is so good in concert. His guitar riffs are off the chart. It was fun seeing him in a smaller venue then he has been playing lately. A must see show!

GCJr opened for FOO FIGHTERS during their 2015 tour, where I saw him perform 11 times. The same set list was played every night, and every night I was floored. It never got old. When it was announced GCJr was coming to San Diego, I was thrilled to know I would experience Gary's own show. He did not disappoint. Gary has a groove that will hook you in and won't let you go. All I can say is DO NOT MISS GARY CLARK JR!

What an extraordinary talent Gary Clark is. This young man is as gifted a guitar player if ever there is one. Smooth and seemingly so effortless at what he does. He tames whatever guitar he picks up. And whether he's playing some Smokey Blues, down and dirty Rock, or a combination of everything, your feet and butt are shaking and a moving the wholes show. Don't know how many whoop whoop's I yelled or how long the endless smile on my face lasted, but if given the opportunity do see a Gary Clark show in an intimate environment, run don't walk immediately to get yourself a ticket.

Gary was great as expected! Enjoyed the music and his band is awesome! Enjoyed hearing songs from the new album. The House of Blues is a great venue but was packed and it gets hot in there. Stood back by the bar and why do people continue to talk loudly during the show! Oh man! It makes me wonder why some people are there. Oh well. Go see Gary on this tour!

This was my first time seeing and I was impressed. Gary Clark Jr is one of the few last sounds better live than on recordings. The pageant was a small venue, but based on the performance GCJ will soon be playing larger venues. I was so impressed that I may catch his show in Chicago.

In a nearly two hour show, Clark performed many of the old hits from the "Live" album along with the new "Sonny Boy Slim" numbers. The guitar work by Mr. Clark and King Zapata was extraordinary!
