We literally went to see these guys at the Mercury Lounge and it was totally a concert. The opening band were some hipster girls trying to sound like their favorite 4AD band from the 1990s or something and they were really terrible at their respective instruments and their rhythm was so stiff it looked like they were all constipated for the tracks that had more back-beat. Yellow Ostrich on the other hand, were fantastic. Wow. Great live. Live singing on top of live looping, no excuses. All good. Literally good. Metaphorically awesome. Totally literal. Literally a total show. The drummer for Yellow Ostrich alone made the opening band look absurdly unprepared. Everything about Yellow Ostrich lets the audience know they are here to stay and are going to be big. Even the nerdy singer has some star power. So does the other beardy guy on bass or keyboards or whatever, but neither as much as the drummer. So tight, hanging with loops by ear. Bang bang boom, perfect beats in that room. As long as Yellow Ostrich stick with that drummer and their Lori Anderson formula for layering vocal harmony samples then they are going to blow up permanently and hugely if they add some more pop/catchy melodies. Their second album was too introverted and a bit boring for anyone not part of their clique or whatever. They still rock live, and how. Literally how. Totally.

The sound for the headliner was awful - muddy, undermixed vocals, jarring levels. Weirdly, the sound for the opener Pattern is Movement was incredibly good! I am a huge fan of Yellow Ostrich's 2012 album The Mistress. The stripped down, personal sound of that album was very appealing to me. That's not at all the material that was covered on Friday night, instead the audience was greeted with some fairly generic rock, competently played but poorly mixed. Judging by the informal reactions of the concertgoers around me, most were similarly disappointed.

Such a great show. Headliners were Kid Mountain who was super fun and Teen was interesting. Yellow Ostrich was definitely worth the wait and the venue really made the show more intimate.

They opened for the Antlers and I didn't even know who Yellow Ostrich was. They are defiantly one of the best bands I've seen perform live. It was amazing seeing everyone getting into their music without knowing it. I made sure to buy their CD before I left the concert.
