Pokey LaFarge

POKEY LAFARGE IN CONCERT:From his days as a nomadic busker to his current status as one of old-time music’s most respected guardians, roots revivalist Pokey LaFarge has remained a soulful and authentic live performer. LaFarge’s bluesy sound combines Americana, Western swing, Appalachian folk, and more, and his knowledge of and respect for these historic genres are on full display at his toe-tapping live shows. His swinging sets evoke the sounds of yesteryear with throwback instruments like kazoo, washboard, and lap steel guitar, treating fans to an unforgettable concert experience that’s the next best thing to a riverboat trip down the Mississippi.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Pokey LaFarge, aka Andrew Heissler, was born in Bloomington, IL, where he earned the nickname “Pokey” from his mother who would frequently implore him to hurry.

Outstanding performance by an amazing combination of super talented performers! Each in their own right are stellar example of seasoned musicianship at its finest. It was a truly lively, engaging and impressive event. I'm Old School when it comes to concerts so am somewhat put-out by the ban on cameras with detachable lenses when everyone else has their smartphones taking pics and video...doesn't seem fair.

Pokey and the band were spectacular! I've seen them three times now and this was by far the best. The concert was exciting, energetic and eventful in the intimate setting of the Sinclair. Absolutely loved it! Absolutely amazing musicians in his band! So very talented and enthusiastic!

I have been trying to see Pokey Lafarge every time he has been in St. Louis and was always too late. I made sure to get tickets this time and was not disappointed!! He was awesome and his band was just as amazing. Very high energy, always moving on stage and the audience could not help but bop along. I told a co-worker when describing his music that it is the type when you listen you can't help but bop to the music and the show was the same way. Loved every minute! So glad he came out for numerous encores and his last, all alone, was the best. A very diverse age group, and I love that. My son who is 30 and I, well over 50, both enjoyed the show. Pokey is a true entertainer and left nothing out. I can't wait to see him again!!!

Pokey was amazing as always. Ryan was unbelievable on the harmonica, the horns rock, bass was booming, and lead guitar wailed away the night!

This was a big test. Pokey LaFarge had just released a new album with a new lineup and all the buzz was around the "new sound". The opening act, Kelsey Waldon, was a nice warm up although the crowd was sparse and set back in their chairs. After a break the people seemed to come out of the woodwork and a rowdy crowd started to get excited. The concert started with some of the well known hits and the audience got their blood stream rolling. Pokey took the time to let everyone know they were going to lean on the new album and they did. The new album is a lot slower in tempo and is more intentional in a way. The high wire acts and fast moving period pieces made way for a mix of different influences. Just as much of music has gone these days, genres melted into meaningless record store categories as the music unfolded. It could be described as country with soul and jazz horns that meld into Motown. Cowboy Ryan took the stage and invited his wife Kelly to join the stage as Pokey took supporting vocals. Pokey then came back out to roaring crowd ready for him to finish strong and he didn't disappoint. He deftly lead the band all night giving lots of space to all of the pieces to show off a bit. Pokey closed the show by playing the must play Central Time to the hometown crowd who ate it with a spoon and then finished with a solo performance that did a good job of wrapping up the evening. It was a truly masterful performance and one that anyone who is a "music snob" would enjoy but is also fully accessible to anyone who just wants to see a show and have a good time. I think Pokey's regulars will be pleased and he probably will gain a good amount of new fans on this tour.

A step back in time and a step forward for "modern" music. Pleasant and rocking experience from start to finish. This is truly American music in the best tradition. Lyrics you can understand and cause you to smile and an on stage presence that is reminiscent of the best of blues, country, and even ragtime. You can't get through a song without tapping your toe and the mechanical talents of each member of the band are flawless. Pokey Lafarge is far from a silly rockabilly sideshow and reflects the best of American musical tradition.

I only came to Pokey LaFarge's music a few months ago, but when I saw on his website that he was going to be in NYC, I knew I had go. He/they did not disappoint! The Bowery Ballroom has very few seats--just a few two-person tables with chairs in the narrow balcony the surrounds the main floor on 3 sides. Every other admission is general standing room. But no matter. It would be impossible to sit during this lively show. Everyone is keeping time to the joyful music in his or her own head-bobbing, foot-stomping, dancing-in-place way. Pokey is a great entertainer, and the individual musicians were each superb. Ryan Koenig on harmonica will knock your proverbial socks off. This is a show not to be missed. Pokey LaFarge can't come back to NYC soon enough for me.

Pokey and his entire band are consummate musicians who obviously love their profession and transfer that love to their audiences. Pokey's knack for crafting wonderful words, rhythms and melodies keep you bopping in your seats and leave you full of happiness, never wanting the performance to end. He's such a sincere and respectful performer that you are drawn into his songs with love. I'll be watching his website for when he will be performing within 200 miles of Raleigh, and I'll even consider traveling to his home base in St. Louis. I say hooray for Pokey LaFarge and continued success around the world.
