Aloe Blacc

Born to Panamanian parents in Los Angeles in 1979, E. Nathaniel Dawkins (aka Aloe Blacc) first began playing trumpet in elementary school, an instrument he continued throughout high school. There he also independently released Imaginary Friends, produced by DJ Exile, with whom he would go on to form the hip-hop group Emanon. While at college at USC, though his artistic endeavors were placed behind his scholastic goals, Aloe still managed to learn how to play the guitar and the piano, and after graduating and spending some time in the corporate world, he decided to return to his first love, music.

We bought these Summerfest passes so we could see jazzy, soulful song-stylist Esnavi, the NYC-based performer who was the opener for Aloe Blacc at the BMO Harris stage. Her set was terrific, with songs from her 2011 album "Exit E" as well as covers by Amy Winehouse, Cee Lo Green, etc. Recommended!

When you attend a concert, great sound quality and ambiance is expected. Emerald Queen's concert hall was nothing short of this. The lighting was perfectly mood setting and seats completely comfortable. I may have found my new favorite concert venue.

My best friend and I saw Aloe Blacc at the El Rey is Los Angeles and it was a fabulous show. His opening act was Joel Van Dijk and Special Force. I had never heard of them before but I really enjoyed them and will be listening to them from now on. Aloe Blacc is great. He puts on a great show and just has a ton of energy. I really like how he interacts with his band and how they all have their moments to shine. He also had a special guest with him. I believe her name was Myra. They performed new song they worked on together. Aloe Blacc is someone who I would go see over and over again. I highly recommend you go see his show. Even if you aren't a fan of his, you will become one.

One of the most gratifying concerts I've ever been to. Reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Al Green with a modern feel.

Didn't get a chance to check out the earlier acts but what I did see was great. Aloe Blacc in concert is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone. The crowd was great and into the show. Aloe is an amazing entertainer and would feed of the energy. The entire band was on point as well as Aloe. One of the better shows i have seen in a long time!

My first time seeing him in concert. Definitely not my last! Me and my friends thought he danced and sounded smooth. When he sung 'You make me smile' it really touched me. He's an awesome singer and overall entertainer. The band ...The Grand Scheme...was very talented too!!

This was my first time seeing Aloe in concert - and it was FANTASTIC! He's so talented and charming and sexy!! And man, does he know how to put on a show! He likens himself to Sammy Davis Jr. (at least as far as style goes) but I gotta tell you he reminded me a lot of Frank Sinatra (rat pack for sure!!) I also really liked how he got the audience engaged in the show without all of the cliche things most performers do (i.e. mention the town name like 100 times) I especially liked that he told so many stories. He's officially on my list now for performers I need to see live as much as possible.

We keep playing Aloe Blacc songs over and over and replaying the fun night - we would see him again in a heartbeat. Great vocals, stage presence, he and his band had fun so did the audience. We just were watching the NBA playoffs and noticed the intro to The Man prelude as opening music!

Aloe was a great live performer. He was very interactive, beautiful positive songs, and told a story behind each song. The setting was also smaller which made it more intimate.

Aloe Blacc put on a great concert! He sounds the same in person as he does on his albums. He interacted with the crowd and told little anecdotes about his life and his music which I thought were a nice touch. The venue was only about 50% full, but he didn't seem to let that faze him and proceeded to put on a nice show for those of us who were there. I recommend seeing him at least once.

Aloe Blacc is a magician. He made that lifeless Hall come alive. I am going to see him again, but unless an all time great plays in the Ballroom , I would never see another show there.

I knew a few songs from the radio. Not knowing anything else about Aloe Blacc, my daughter and I decided to go to the show on Friday night. It started out slowly, with everyone seated, listening to his amazingly soulful voice. Then it kicked into a higher gear with the first few notes of "I'm the Man" followed by "Wake Me Up." The crowd was on their feet dancing. He followed with a few more upbeat songs from his older album, and the encore was unbelievable! His version of California Dreamin' (that reminds he and his band of home), followed by a bluesy "Billie Jean" tore the house down. After two hours we were so upbeat, the hour drive home seemed like no time at all. Talented musicians and an amazing performer, who laid it all out there for us.

It's so refreshing to find a musician that has soul and passion and just spreads the love for what he does. He doesn't need to use swear words or provocative things he just has soul. I absolutely loved this performance. It was a great night of amazing music and talent that I would recommend anyone to see!

Great live performer. His voice is wonderful, his dance moves were great, he had the crowd split into a soul train line (and was successful!), he had a great set list, and he also played a LOT of songs. His band was sick too--sax, trumpet, keys, guitar and bass, and of course the drums! The opening act was a local group, which I thought was really cool, and I knew nothing about them but they were also great live.

The concert was great. especially the music was just what I thought, smooth, funky ,soulful, Groovy. I love his voice and his performance. I hope to see more artist from Stones Throw Records, such as Dam-funk, DOOM,Madlib. It's not all about hiphop music or black music, for me it is about music that gives you the feeling, the emotion, and everything you deserve.

Excellent performance, superb voice, and great stage presence. His show promotes good feelings and a positive vibe. He performs with a live band which is equally talented. Solid R&B music with a jazzy vibe and strong voice. I'll see him again next time he's in town. If you don't go you'll miss out.

This was my first time seeing Aloe Blacc & with tickets that cheap along with loving his album- I had to see him! Aloe had the whole theater dancing, whether alone or with your friends or partner. He is an amazingly talented vocalist and the bands good vibes 'n funk added to the good feelings all night! The dance party he encouraged in the center of the theater was entertaining to watch as well. Definitely my favorite interactive show seen this year!!

I went to this show unfamaliar with Aloe Blacc. My two girls with me already knew his music. The band came out started a quick jam that got the place movin' Soon Aloe Blacc got on stage and took over. The man can sing and dance. He and his band were smokin' . His smooth R&B sound mixed with a bit of hip hop got me. The band backing up were tight. Through out the show all the members got a solo and every one hit it. By the end of the show I was sweaty and tired from groovin to the music. I will make it a point to add Aloe Blacc to listening rotation.

Aloe Blacc is the best performer I've seen in a long time! The energy he and his band brought to the stage was incredible. It didn't feel like a concert, it felt like a party. The venue was the prefect size, intimate but big enough to sing and dance along, and believe me, everyone one was singing and dancing to his songs! His voice was incredible! There was no way you couldn't enjoy yourself in that atmosphere!
