I had no expectations and was completely blown away- excellent songwriting, singing, and playing. Trixie's voice is mesmerizing, Daniel Lanois' playing is other-worldly (and one of the most inspiring guitarists ever), Brian Blade's drumming is amazing as well- Brian doesn't play drums, he 'floats' over them. I can honestly say he is the best drummer I have ever seen. The bass player was good too, although I don't know who he is. Overall, the show was one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life- and I don't say that lightly. It was truly a special moment and one of the most musical evenings I have ever had.

Five stars hands down. What an amazing show. I love Daniel Lanois and Black Dub is just another level of his fantastic sound. It really doesn t get more real than this. The sound was fantastic and the soul was thick and wall to wall. Its a shame that this music doesn t get more airplay or recognition. It s for the true music lover that needs to feel something and isn t afraid to show it. Although Daniel is the main guy in the band, Trixie Whitely stole the show. What an amazing talent. She sings with the soul of a thousand voices, plays drums along side the fantastic Brian Blade AND plays guitar. Lady Gaga who?? Katy Perry what?? The popular acts of today combined don t even come close to the vibe Black Dub sets off. An inspiration all around only to be reflected in my music

Actually saw them at the 9:30 Club in D.C. the night before. The audience was disappointingly sparse for someone of this caliber. What's up D.C.? The music was terrific even though Trixie Whitley was obviously still nursing an ailment and taking sips of hot tea between songs. However, she was a trooper and powered through the show anyway. The ensemble has such a great sound it was a very soulful, uplifting experience.

Better overall sound at Webster Hall than at the Bowery Ballroom show last year. A truly unique sound on guitar that's both powerful and mellow at the same time. It's hard to believe the voice that comes out of their singer. She can really belt it out. Brian Blade on drums was terrific, as was the whole band - a really cohesive sound; loved them.

Saw Black Dub at the Music Box on May 28. Had very high expectations and they exceeded them all. Great musicianship. Strong performances from everyone. A lot of variety and all the band members were very interesting to watch. Hard to believe that music that rocking and sophisticated translates so well to a live performance. Lanois was incredible on the guitar. Just enough solos to show off his flash but really more tight playing with the rest of the band. It's still hard to believe that Trixie's singing is so strong and passionate. She is the real thing. As was drummer, who was fascinating to watch -- as was his drumming along with Trixie. They had a guest bassist who was also exceptional in terms of his guitar playing and his rich baritone voice. Very versatile group of performers who work very well as a team on stage. Harmonies were pure and fun. Just enough edge so that you knew it wasn't overly manufactured. I'm looking forward to seeing them again -- especially as they release new material.

Daryl "the Bird" Johnson joined the Black Dub touring ensemble--Daniel Lanois, Trixie Whitley, Brian Blades, and at times displaced fellow-bassist Jim "Sidepipe" Wilson--for about hslf the set at the Music Box in Hollywood Saturdy night. The band provided a typically rhythmic excursion into Lanois' land of echoplex behind-the-beat milk and honey grooving. Particularly sweet were Whitley's vocals, drawn from deep wells of a soulful inner sanctum. The woman is made of soul. And Blades' propulsive drumming provides as much of a signature to the band's sound as Lanois' Les Paul. Daniel was in fine form, scorching sonic pathways with his spare two-finger, beat-heavy guitaring. At times Jim Wilson seemed like a fifth wheel; probably better to have him sit out the LA gigs (if that's the dilly) or work things out a little better. But, oh man did they deliver. One minor caveat: how can you leave "Canaan" in the gig bag?

Rocca Deluca reminded me so much of Jeff Buckley but not as facile in his vocal range. Interesting, moody guitar playing but the sound engineering made it a bit slushy. Way too much base that distorted the sound and shook the building. Same problem for Daniel Lanois' band. They played very well but the engineering was poor, and made a lot of the sound slushy and a bit distorted. Young singer, Trixie Whitley has a big booming voice (out of a slight waifs' frame) but she needs to learn to vary her voice and not sing every song the same. I still like it best when Daniel sings his own things, but he seems reticent to do that a lot? The band played old and new favorites, and all in all I really enjoyed the new textures laid onto the old songs.

Real musical talent like this is rare. If they come to your city, and you pass on them, you are a fool. I ve been glowing for days.

Great show. Nice venue, however, like most engineers, this guy mixed too much bass--60Hz -250Hz was just too loud. Unfortunately, that killed most of the definition in the bass guitars and made some of the vocals unintelligable. Musical performances were outstanding.

I've seen Daniel a few times. He is always amazing. This show was no exception. Most of the Black Dub stuff was covered as well as a couple standards form Acadie and Wynona. Daniel also did a hypnotic pedal steel piece with Brian Blade. Trixie is a great performer and it is so clear that she loves what she is doing. Everyone in this band is amazing. A real treat to have been there. I hope they do more work together. I would catch them again if possible. Thanks Black Dub!

One of the best shows I've ever seen. One of the best bands out there today. Soul, beauty, fire. 4 brilliant individuals coming together to serve each other and the songs. I'll be seeing them again without a doubt!

awesome concert. I've loved Daniel Lanois since I first heard Peter Gabriel's So in the late 80's as a kid and finally got to see him. That makes me biased, but I was also went into the show biased towards all his earlier solo work and producing work and did not particularly get into the Black Dub videos posted at his site (admittedly, I only listened once). Some of the playing felt like a rock-n-roll version of chamber music - the 4 players were so intent on playing as one. That really hit me. Sometimes I could have done with a little less of the in-your-face hardcore soul/blues voice from Trixie...I like her voice but could have used a little more variety.

Daniel Lanois latest project was a much anticipated event as soon as I saw it pop up on my radar. He does not come around often and I was lucky to see him last at the Nightstage in Cambridge back in 1993.This is a powerhouse group that was maybe not at its best on the opening date of a short northeast tour ,following the heels of last months release of Neil Youngs "Le Noise " produced by Lanois and Black Dub's debut release this month. But that is part of the beauty of the show , what it may have lacked in overall performance it made up for in raw emotion from Trixie Whitleys powerful vocals to Brian Blades forceful drumming and Lanois searing guitar work. Jim Wilson filled in nicely on bass replacing long time Lanois sidekick Daryl Johnson who did the studio work on the cd. I highly reccommend catching these guys if you have the chance you won't be disappointed !

I have been to many shows in my life, but this show was one of the best. Lanois and his new band connected immediately with the audience. The vibe was warm and friendly... what a treat to spend a few hours with my favorite artist.Trixie blew the house down.

I came to this show with high expectations. I'd watched some videos and was impressed. What I was not prepared for was how amazing Brian Blade's drumming and Daniel Lanois' guitar would be when heard live. They both play with such intensity, but they each create magic with the spaces they leave empty. I stood in the balcony slightly above and behind Brian Blade and was awed by his ability to keep a beat going with one hand while using his other to move drums, change sticks and set up something new. Daniel Lanois had a wonderful presence. His control of the stage, band, audience, instrument and songs was an inspiration. His guitar always set the tone, but never took over the song. What a pleasure to watch and hear. Trixie Whitley reminded me of her dad. Talent to burn, but distant and distracted. When she digs into her material, she can't be beat, but too often she seems like she'd like to be anyplace else. Boson audiences can be too cerebral and their lack of spontaneity can be annoying. Perhaps this was the problem. I've forgotten the bass player's name. His busy bass worked well with the spaces created by Lanois and Blade. His backing vocals were an asset. The show was shorter than I wanted, but its always good to be left wanting more.

Fantastic performances by all. Rocco opened the show with a solo set played on electric resonator guitar. Great slide playing and amazing vocals. He showed an amazing depth of lyrical content and vocal range. Black Dub came on and immediately started rocking. Trixie's vocals are smoky and full of soul. Daniel Lanois' Guitar work is both ethereal and bluesy at the same time. Brian Blade plays the drums like no one else. Bass was supplied by Jim, along with superb harmony vocals. The vocal blend of Dan, Jim, and Trixie was just amazing. Trixie Whitley also played guitar on one song, drums on a couple more, and keys on one song. Very talented newcomer and she has a huge future ahead of her. Excellent visuals were provided by Dan's regular videographer (Adam Vollick I think), with live, artistic video of the band projected on a backdrop behind them.

Was disappointed in Daniels guitar-ship, or lack of...sound not good, band seemed to be not "clicking", Daniel kept on asking Brian Blade to change beats...even stopped a song to do so...short show, crowd was surprised by it also...uninspiring, surprised Brian Blade agreed to play with them, they wasted his talent.

Everything a live show should be. Amazing musicians playing from the heart. And Trixie Whitley's voice is a force to be reckoned with. Change your plans, go on a road trip, do whatever it takes to see these guys live. You won't regret it.

everything you would expect from Daniel Lanois... monster players / huge sound / weaving melodies / and Trixie has pipes and depth. She gave it all and left a puddle on the stage... hope she doesn't burn out. Thanks Daniel for putting this group together. the opener, Rocco Delucca is not to be missed... get there early!
