Shovels & Rope

Shovels & Rope

Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending,  Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope.

Just, absolutely amazing. Michael and Cary Ann are just outstanding musicians, and extraordinary performers. They were so excited to be at The Mother Church and on Valentine's day! It was a sold out show and had such a great atmosphere! Caroline Rose was a pleasant surprise and was a great opener!!

Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are the perfect antidote to the wave of old-timey revival music that has been out there for a while now. Though their music is based in part on that culture as well as church hymns, country songs, the delta blues, rockabilly and all sorts of other influences, these two have truly created their own sound that is completely modern. As performers they bring so much energy and heart to their shows that to see them in a small venue like the Royale in Boston was just perfect. Got in early and went right up to the front of the stage and was completely transported by every song. Most I knew well from their albums, but they were playing fast and loose, switching back and forth between the drums, guitar and keyboard as they are wont to do in their sets, so each song was fresh and unique. they were totally engaged with one another and the audience as well - often felt they were looking right at me which is always cool! Cary Ann tearing it up on the drums, hair flying, tongue wagging and a devilish grin on her face. Micheal grinding our some down and dirty licks on his guitars. Highlights for me were "The Devil Is All Around" and the absolutely beautiful "Thresher" off their new album. Their voices and harmonies are rough but magical. Bottom line is: see them when ever you can. A smaller venue will reward you with the intimacy and power of their performance.

The bands were great and the Parish room is very unique and atmospheric. However, the bar is severely insufficient to support the crowd that was in attendance. The size and number of bartenders, combined with what seems like a slow credit card process, made it so that you waited 15 minutes to put in a drink order. At one point I gave up and waited until the band break to go back for a drink (and close my tab, obviously) and even then I missed a couple of songs from the headliners.

Shovels & Rope bring an energy you only see once in a while. They are lively, humorous, talented and creative with their set. They bring a bit of honky tonk, rock, and folk to the stage and you feel like close friends with them. The venue was intimate enough to feel close to the band no matter where you stood. The crowd was dancing the whole time. People appreciated the music for music and danced their hearts out. Amazing show. I hope they always come back to Boston.

Love this duo from the South. If you like funky bluegrass, folk, with some rock n roll mixed in with all that, and amazing acoustic guitar, drum, and harmonica playing...you need to see this duo! Their chemistry, passion for music and performing is so evident and they are so full of energy! Special, one of a kind couple!!! The Sinclair in Harvard Square just opened December and its a great venue. Food and drink next door, then walk right over to the other side to see live music! Loved it!

The band is fantastic, they put on a great show! The sound at the Sinclair, unfortunately, was not good. And the people working the sound board did ABSOLUTELY nothing to fix it. The electric guitar was constantly feeding back, and I as I was standing next to the sound board, I had the opportunity to observe the soundman in "inaction." He did nothing to attempt to fix the problem, and the feedback really detracted from the show.

So glad to get in on the first show of the Little Seeds tour. This duo bring raw emotion and transparency to the stage mixed with the sounds of old Appalachia and the salty air of Charleston. Their chemistry is undeniable, and you find yourself lost in their songs entirely. True American storytellers.

Far too short overall, with too much talking between songs and too disjointed between songs, and not enough songs. Stellar lineup of musicians but just felt slow rather than full of energy that it could have had.

Shovels and Rooe is one of the greatest little bands making music right now - they are gifted musicians, songwriters, and entertainers. The only downside to this event is the venue - too many columns in the way, and the sound is never great in this little space. It clearly was not designed as a music venue, and it shows.

Shovels & Rope is a fantastic band, and I would recommend their show to any music lover! Caroline Rose opened, and did a great job. She has a very unique sound and personality to match. The venue was fantastic, and I was able to get a great spot down front, just a few minutes before Caroline came on stage. Once she started, the lower section of the auditorium filled up quickly. I ultimately had to head towards the back of the room with a friend who was feeling lightheaded. The atmosphere back there was quite different. During Shovels & Rope's show, there was so much talking I could barely hear the band, which was incredibly disappointing.

I bought the tickets as a Christmas gift for my wife, who was a fan before I knew about them. She and I went to the performance, and when I asked her how she enjoyed it, she said, "Awesome! They are amazing live! They connect with the audience." We had a great time. I enjoyed the music, some of which I heard before when we saw them open for someone else in Raleigh, NC. Even though it is only the two of them performing, I especially enjoy how full their sound is and the diversity of instruments they play. They are quite talented, and their voices are wonderful having no problem filling the space. About the location: Finding the actual door to get in the venue was a bit awkward. One side of the site had a volleyball tournament, and it seemed the police had all the closest entrances to the parking lot ($5 fee) blocked, but once we found our way, everything was fine. I would arrive a bit earlier next time, especially since it was dark out (8pm showtime during the winter). The size is spacious, but not so big that you feel you need a telescope to see the artist.

What I heard in the audience was a very poor rendition of their albums and of their small-venue performances. The amplifier gain was too high resulting in gross distortion of the music. There is no justification for sound intensities of 90 to 100 dB in the GT seats.

This fun couple swapped instruments several times during the concert....super cool that they are musically ambidextrous. The music was great live and very entertaining to watch. I loved Shovels and Rope when I saw them last year at the Groundhog Day concert at the Charleston Music hall. What a difference a year makes! The music was too loudly aggressive for their wonderful harmonies and I think that was because they were playing in a large venue. In particular, the drumming was hammering and disruptive rather than supporting the beat and undergirding the performance. The crowd stood the entire time we were there (for about 30 minutes of the concert) and we lost the excellent visibility we had from our seats. There was no need to stand the entire time - the music for the most part wasn't danceable (they aren't Tina Turner!) and the crowd could have sat for the quieter ballads.

I haven't missed a hometown shovels and rope show in years, and I've never been disappointed- Saturday night was no exception. They played some of my favorite songs from their debut album, with a perfect mix from their two most recent efforts. Cary Ann's voice was impeccable; Michael's guitar playing and presence was unapologetically rock and roll. They had the entire crowd singing, dancing and/or clapping for two hours. The only thing that could have made the show any better was if they played every song they ever wrote! I was sad to see it end, but always grateful and overjoyed to see them live. They deserve all the respect and praise they are given and then some!

This band deserves all the accolades and love they are receiving. The Fillmore is turning into a place I'm not interested in. The sound was good for this particular band, but usually it's too bass heavy (chattering-teeth heavy, yeah). Shovels & Rope has a synthesizer, which was turned up so loud I could often not hear the other instruments or vocals. The front of the stage had a guard rail up? I'm not sure if this is new or what, but it was silly. The security guys were real strict about where you could stand. Did something happen to an artist there or something? Go see Shovels & Rope. Just not at the Fillmore.

This was my first headlining Shovel and Rope show after I saw them for the first time opening for Butch Walker two years ago and I loved the guys! Good energy, good show and music! I was pleasantly surprised of the live rendition of their songs - brought a new kick to their music! Good fun! I was pleasantly surprised at Shakey Graves - have to admit I never look into the opening bands to have a surprise moment - and I thought it was going to be a band, so when this one-man show showed up and blew me away I was instantly taken away. The guy is amazing and his live versions are so much better than recordings it turns out! But definitely go buy the guy's music, it's really good!

Gosh all I wanted was a night out to see some uplifting music, and I have always had that experience seeing these two. This was the sixth time I've seen Shovels & Rope. I thought it was really unfortunate they've decided to get political on stage. I go out to see live music to rise above the vagaries and disappointments of daily life, not marinate in them. I understand some people enjoy this type of thing, and if that's you, you should have a blast. But know that's what you're in for if you were hoping for a night of something a little more transcendent. Port City Music Hall is a decent venue. The only real benefit to the "preferred seating" is that there are actual seats. There are only two or three tables where you have an unobstructed view of the stage, so get there early if you sprung for the pricier tickets, and want to be able to actually see the band.

Shovels & Rope are a one of a kind whirlwind of rock, blues, country, Americana and kick ass. I was very disappointed that the Ryman had an obnoxoiously loud and talking-over-the-music crowd this evening, some falling-down drunk dudes next to me were even singing Garth Brooks loudly over the gaps between performances until I told them they were being disrespectful. Sadly, it was clear S&R really needs to get a professional road crew because the quality of the sound was amateur and staticky at times. Their drum kit was set up too loud and distracted from the rest of the music. The first half of their Saturday set their vocals were hard to hear, but it got better. The first three songs of their Sunday set, their vocals were also soft. I was somewhat disappointed that the Saturday and Sunday sets seemed nearly identical, in spite of Michael stating they would be playing different stuff. but that last part is not a review of Saturday in particular, so I digress. Great act. Incredible venue with not a bad seat in the house.

The opening act of John moreland was terrific. He sang from his soul and you could feel his pain. He and his partner could pick a mean guitar. That's why I listen to country music. Good music with a story. Then shovels and rope came on. After the fourth song of a head throbbing base drum that she kicked with her foot my husband and I agreed to leave. Life's to short to listen to bad music.

Having seen Shovels and Rope play well on numerous occasions prior to this, I have to say this was not a quality experience. The sound quality at the Ryman was horrible and the vocals were muffled and the instrumental parts too loud for a duo. This was a very obvious problem and it was not fixed through the set.
