Gotta Dance (Chicago)
One remarkable dance team. One big chance. One small twist. You gotta be over 60.

Stefanie Powers was the reason I came to Chicago to see this play. She was brilliant! Amazing, funny, and I could see it everyday and never get tired of it. If they had this play on DVD I'd buy a copy for sure.

One of the best musicals I've seen in a longtime. All the cast members put on a super performance and I am making plans to see them when they hit Broadway later this year!!

I expected more. Story was cute but too obvious. Songs were fair. Show was unpolished. I counted 3 line mistakes and 3-4 times when I thought the actor was going to fall due to tripping or something else. At this point, I would not recommend this.

Always moving, never a dull moment. My father got the spot light on him for one song number in the 2nd act, fantastic for him at 88. Cast were all terrific and enjoyable to watch.

Unfortunately, I left at intermission. I attended a performance only a few days after it opened. I should have waited. There were many problems that need to be worked out. First, it seemed like people didn't really know their lines. And the cast didn't really "feel" the text yet, because they kept stopping for laughs at points that weren't funny. There was no really clear plot, so the fact that this group of people had a problem pulling off a hip-hop dance routine seemed to be the obstacle they had to overcome....and they did that at the end of the first act. Thus, I felt like that was a satisfying ending for me, and didn't feel the need to see the second act. That being said, Georgia Engel was wonderful. The concept of this is great, and I really hope it gets better. This type of musical really deserves to be heard.

Our balcony seating destroyed any chance of enjoying this show. While the sweet and charming voice of Ms. Engles offered many hilarious moments on TV it, sadly, did not carry into the balcony seating of live theatre. We knew things were funny because we heard the orchestra level audience laugh. The character played by Ms. Powers was entirely too off-putting to be enjoyable. If you watched carefully it soon became obvious that, no, most of the elderly cast could not dance very well. The premise of the show is based on such a strange and ill-advised marketing attempt that one wonders why? Why did the original teams owners think it would increase attendance? Why did anyone think this idea would draw knowledgable audience members to the theatre? Some of the lines are so current it appears the writers know this will be a popcorn show that comes and goes after a brief run. There are no memorable songs from this show and one mood-deadening moment when one character sings about her husband's Alzheimer's disease. The character that performed the salsa number with her young lover was the best and most entertaining moment of the show.

The idea of an over 60 hip hop NBA dance line was intriguing. The cast could not have been better, and well chosen for their rolls. Each leading character had a wonderful back story that added it's on personal touch.. A must for all generations....

The premise of Gotta Dance is great - take a team of over 60's, all dancers but of varying ability and styles, and have them audition to be part of the group which will entertain fans at the intermission of a Basketball game. Choose the team, get them ready for rehearsing and then tell them they have to fill in insurance forms... because they'll be doing Hip Hop!! The stars of the show for me were Stefanie Powers whose agility totally belies her 73 years, and who has a great singing voice. Georgia Engel who has great comic timing, and Lori Tan Chinn who managed to reduce quite a few members of the audience to tears with her rendition of a song about her husband's struggles with dementia. All in all Gotta Dance is a fabulous new musical and I hope it makes it to Broadway as planned, with the Chicago cast.

This was an enjoyable show. . . sort of a geriatric Chorus Line. It seemed to use the Chorus Line model, so not the most original format. The well written script was sharp and current, and the music although not the most memorable, was pleasant and in some cases, very poignant. (The Waters Rise). There are a few standout performances, particularly Nancy Ticotin and Georgia Engel, but as we saw the third performance after opening,, a few cast members will, no doubt, get better with time and more practice. Andre de Shields looked a bit lost on several occasions. We did identify and empathize with the characters, and it is a "feel good" show for seniors.

Ok so just to be clear I am nowhere near 60 years old, but i just absolutely loved this show. I took my girlfriend to see it and we both laughed and danced in our seats. It was a great show that spoke to some of the real issues that come along with aging. It inspired both me and my girlfriend who were dancers when we were younger to get back in the dance game and continue doing the thing that we love. There were laughs and times of deep reflection that brought you to the verge of tears. TENS Yes TENS.

What a great show! I was wondering how could a writer expand on the idea of a group of people, with a passion for dance....try out for a half time show. Well, this writer did. I must say that as the story unfolded, the audience could really relate to each of thei character's life struggles. You will definitely recognize the stars in the show. The "plot" for this is so thin you can see through it, the "jokes" so old my grandpa was telling them and the "zingers" totally implausible or no zing. The actors were good and did the best they could with the thin material--I don't think it will ever make it to Broadway. Was really bad cause we saw Beautiful the day before (which was beautiful)

I purchased 4 tickets at the special "sixty" promo to attend with my husband and another couple. After my husband decided he did not want to make the 2 hour trip from our home, I went to Plan B and invited 3 of my friends who are all over 60 and what a joy this turned out to be. Not only did we have fantastic seats, we simply enjoyed every aspect of this musical, especially getting to know the back stories of the main characters. We especially enjoyed, "My Little Princess" because we could relate to a grandma having to tell a granddaughter that there are those who love you and not to sell yourself short or allow yourself to be treated with disrespect. Of course, all of the stories were timely and relevant and we felt that the actors put in 100%! We have not stopped talking about this experience to all of our friends, so we have probably increased future sales due to our enthusiasm. This is a wonderful show to do with our more mature girlfriends, moms, and grand moms. Follow up the show with a nice dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants downtown and you will create a wonderful memory. We saw Mama Mia 15 years ago as a pre-Broadway run and I can definitely see this having a long run on Broadway (NY) as well. I was even motivated to see the 2008 movie of the same name on Netflix following the show and it helped to give me an even greater appreciation for what they did with this musical. I highly recommend!

There's a lot of potential in this new musical about aging with dignity but before it hits B'way this Fall - it needs some work. Standouts in this production are Andre De Shields, self-dubbed "The King of Swing" and he sells it; Nancy Ticotin, who heats up the room in her sexy salsa in the second act; and Lori Tan Chinn, who's free-spirit enchants the audience. Haven Burton as the Senior's coach is also strong. Stephanie Powers is perfectly cast and plays the part to the hilt. Georgia Engel has the expected punch lines - delivered in her patented naive way - but her "Dorothy/Dottie" number, that is intended to establish her love of Rap,fell flat. Lillias White's story arc plays out in 3 numbers - the first of which goes on way too long. The last number of the first act - "Swagger" is anything but. There's a good message buried in the staging right now - I hope they can bring it out in time to enjoy a long run in New York.

I'm an almost 60 yr old, still loving to dance, woman. Pretty much their target audience. Although the cast was enthusiastic and generally good, they were given a boring, simplistic and predictable script with cardboard cutout characters. And, for a show that is about dancing, the choreography was incredibly lame. Half the show they were talking about how bad they are and they have to get ready for the big show... and... come the big show... they are still bad. NO. I kept waiting, hoping for the big reveal, how it all came together, how they got to showcase their own talents In the big show-stopping number at the end, but.... meh. Boring. Unless they substantially change pretty much everything about this show, I'd say spend your money and time elsewhere.

Literally, after the play, I called my grandmother, aunts, mom, cousins, especially every wise and mature woman. I think it is a beautiful way to express what takes place in a woman's life. Young girls will appreciate it also and will recognize the words that they hear in the play. My 15 year old daughter was hesitant but as soon as the lights went on, she said, "Mom, I really liked that! It was sooo much better than I expected it to be. It made me think of grandma!"

We decided to go based on early audience reviews and were not disappointed. Gotta Dance is a very enjoyable musical, with touches of Kinky Boots and even A Chorus Line. The cast was excellent from the four principals to the swing performers, with a special shout-out to Haven Burton who played the 27 yo coach, excellent singer and dancer. It;s not a heavy-message musical but it does touch on a few of the pains of getting older, especially in The Waters Rise. Overall it's definitely a feel-good time. And when Georgia Engel smiles, it's Georgette, so wonderful.

Yes, it made us all want to dance now and often. The stage production was great for the stadium closing and made you feel like you were there watching the game at half time. This play crossed the ages and nationalities. Made you want to live.

It is a very funny, entertaining show. The cast is an eclectic group of characters with varied talents that pull you in to the heart of the show. As always, Georgia Engle gives a great performance. The audience's response to the action was loud and clear that everyone was having fun watching "Gotta Dance"..

This was so fun that I could watch it again and again. I noticed that the young crowd and the older crowd could both elated and both laughing non stop. It was both funny and inspiring. A great story. Every performer was excellent!I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Strong cast. Every actor unique and interesting. Fabulous music. Wonderful lyrics. Outstanding dance. (Nancy Ticotin as Camilla is AMAZING!!!!) I fell in love with every character. I would see this again in a heartbeat...and bring others. The rest of audience seemed to agree with me. Look out Broadway. A HIT is headed your way.

My sister and I absolutely loved Gotta Dance. Every character was cast so perfectly. We were laughing so much our faces hurt! Yet there were times that tears came to our eyes. The music and dancing was energetic and fun to listen to and watch. I'm sorry I first saw it just before it was leaving town. I would definitely have gotten a group of friends to come see it again if I had seen it earlier in its run.

We went to see Gotta Dance, because we were huge fans of Kinky Boots. Both are such fun shows! If Gotta Dance were a musical on DVD, I'd watch parts of it every day. Our only regrets are that we didn't also bring my father and our small children. The upbeat dancing and singing is for all to enjoy! Thank you!

Fun musical. Not to deep but with a good message - you are never too old! Great combination of humor and vocals. Perfect for a relaxing fun night out.

We saw this show on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, in Chicago, and I highly recommend!!!! VERY fun. My childhood Hart to Hart crush on Stefanie Powers has returned, looking look lady! And I am now crushing on Georgia Engel!!! So adorable and GREAT moves along with perfect comedic talent. We can't wait to see it again, on Broadway!

I went with a friend. We had the most wonderful time and laughed and cried with the other audience members and the cast. It was joyous and compelling. I was especially moved by the character whose husband has altzheimers I am dealing with that with my mother. I would recommend it highly, especially for someone who thinks life is over at retirement, no matter what their age.

Gotta Dance was such an amazing story brought to life on stage. The well-developed musical evoked a plethora of emotion as it touched on various subjects with which anyone in attendance could relate. The star-studded cast could not have had any better chemistry. I look forward to the opportunity of one day catching the production on Broadway!

Took my wife to this play for her 63rd birthday. We had a great time! We really enjoyed the individual stories within the main play. Most of all, it was inspiring for people of our age to enjoy life and be willing to try new things. Younger folks really seemed to enjoy it also. I highly recommend sing this play.

The show was really funny and we all had a great laugh, while some of the messages for those caring for elderly family really shines through. Our group (my daughter, two sister in - laws and mother-in law) ages were from 17-90 and all loved it and could relate to it. We sat in mezzanine left and towards the back but could see very well. The theater is beautiful but not a lot of leg room for tall people. I recommend buying your tickets for parking on line and then you don't have to wait in the machine lines when returning home Well worth the 60 mile drive!

Having seen the snippet this past summer at "Broadway in Chicago", my interested was piqued and this production did not disappoint! I would go to see this again. The seniors were being taught Hip-Hop routines, but the music, thankfully, was NOT all Hip-Hop.There were enough lively rhythms to make me want to dance in the aisles, however. I could understand every word in the music of the vignettes which told the stories of each "featured" character; those songs were so pleasant to the ear and they could evoke emotion from the audience.

I took my mother and my daughter and we all had an equally good time. I would recommend this to anyone and would love to see it again if it was here longer! I enjoyed Geogia Engel's performance very much!
