Rickey Minor

The Hollywood Bowl is such a beautiful venue, especially on a warm summer night. People can enjoy food and a glass of wine while chatting with friends and getting ready for the show. Stevie Wonder was as fabulous as 30 years ago. He and Janelle Monae were the highlight of the evening and absolutely fantastic. As for some of the "friends" - I wish they would have skipped some of them. Rickey Minor as a host was also completely unnecessary. Leaving the parking area was an utter nightmare. We were parked in the first row and thought we'd be out in minutes. No. For some strange reason traffic control had blocked off the left hand turn which is a straight shot to the 101. So we were waiting 45 minutes because nothing was moving. Rediculous!

It was everything I hoped for and more. Sharon Jones and Janelle Monae killed it. Stevie was just everying you could hope for and Charles Bradley was seriously awesome. I could only wish that they had longer sets. Though all the artists were fantastic, I would have loved it to be a couple less people so we could hear more from them all. Mabye two night of shows instead of one. Festival would have been perfect.

I think most went to see Stevie Wonder perform, but he did not perform very much and most of the show was done by ok artists. Overall I think seeing Janelle Monet was my favorite though. Wasn't a fan of hers till that night. Tickets were cheap and went to a good cause so can't complain to much.

I must say that this event was very misleading. I am a big Stevie Wonder fan and looked forward to seeing him perform, HIS songs. The event was more of a fundraiser, which was the only reason I did not give it a 1 star, but was not advertised as so. I wish Ricky Minor would have been more honest with his marketing. I felt like they used Stevie's name to get the people there, but did not have him perform. Message to Stevie- "I love your music. It's nice that you keep having these events to raise funds for others, but can you please just start doing more concerts featuring you?!" And the groups that performed were not that great! Sorry. But it was for a good cause, which was my only solace.

Great venue, great musicians......my only complaint VERY dissapointed that Stevie Wonder played only 1 full song of his. He is the reason I bought tickets!

This was an utter disappointment. Stevie Wonder, the headliner only sung two of his own songs. All-and-all, Stevie did more talking than he did singing. The other performers were okay. This event was really for the kids and it should have been marketed as such. This would've kept people from leaving the event which was put together for a good purpose disappointed.

While I enjoyed hearing some artists that I'd never heard of (Charles Redley and Rocky Dawuni), this concert was the biggest waste of money / time...EVER! If you're going to have a show with Stevie Wonder attached to it, Mr. Wonder should perform more than a 4 song set, with only 1 of those songs being his own. I was so excited to see a legend and pioneer of soul music and was totally let down. What he did perform was amazing, he's as good live as he is on his albums, however, overall I felt mislead on how much Stevie was going to perform. This definitely makes me think twice about attending another concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and one that is attached to KCRW. Totally disappointing.

We rated this night a 7 out of 10....why? We wanted more of Stevie Wonder, his friends were good and sum even great :) but bottom line was we wanted at least 3 more songs by Stevie and we would have rated this night a 10...eliminate 2 of his guest and give him more time on stage. Thanks tilove777

I really wanted to hear more songs from stevie! other artists sang more than him.

This is one of the best concerts I've been to at the Bowl. I have a new respect for Ricky Minor and how he put together such an amazing collection of artists and musicians. I especially loved Janelle Monet, Charles Bradley (this guy has some serious soul!) and, of course, my all time favorite Stevie Wonder. It was a beautiful thing to see 18,000 people (it was a sold out concert!) dancing, laughing and having a great time. It was one of those amazing moments where you felt the power of how music speaks to people and brings people together with a global shared consciousness. And it was for a great cause - to help under privileged youth in Los Angeles have access to music when they wouldn't otherwise. Overall it was an awesome event. I always love the Hollywood Bowl, it's my favorite place in all of Los Angeles. Great job KCRW!!

Being at the bowl is always a treat; however, this show overall was ok.

I went to see this show just because of Stevie Wonder and I feel so Mad, tricked and disappointed because he played only a couple of songs and left... They should have been honest to the people and mention it in the adds, but obviously, they did not, because it help them sell all the tickets... I feel that I've been mislead and tricked by the marketing team of the Hollywood Bowl and this my friends, is SO not nice and SO not cool !!! it will make me think twice before the next Hollywood Bowl event and most definitely, I would NOT recommend it to anybody !!! Also, I was not the only one who felt like this, but thousands of other did too !!! Please have a moment to think about it and about HONESTY, dear Hollywood Bowl team !!

They were all terrific artists, there were simply too many "friends" and not nearly enough "Stevie"!

Good show (good, not great, not awesome). I got to see a lot of musicians I never would have heard of otherwise, so that part was cool. However, I was disappointed to discover that although Stevie Wonder was headlining the bill, he only played 4 songs. I went to this show with the sole purpose of seeing a Stevie Wonder show. Rocky Dawuni was awful. Janelle Monae was terrific.

This was really Women's Night, especially Mia, Cici, Jonelle and Sharon shined supremely. I really didn't get why Grace Potter was on the show - couldn't bear to watch her perform Proud Mary. The guys (or selection of guys) disappointed. I kind of dug what Stevie was attempting to do, pay homage to some really great rhythm and blues singers, but I think the audience was wanting less of that and more Stevie Wonder hits. Everyone around me couldn't believe the show ended when it did.

I enjoyed the evening with my family but I wish that that Stevie would have had more time on stage. He was the headliner and I felt that he should have had the bulk of the time.

Great concert, but wished for more of Stevie Wonder.

I guess if Rickey Minor wants to slap Stevie Wonder's name to a concert to sell tickets - he, KCRW and the Hollywood Bowl are marketing geniuses!!! We went to this concert expecting to see Stevie Wonder perform and not just his "friends", after all, the concert is titled "Rickey Minor, Stevie Wonder and Friends". The "friends" performed for about 3-4 hours & Mr. Wonder sang 2 of his own songs and 4-5 snippets of other songs that were inspirational to him. We paid to see Stevie & not his "friends"!!! 2 SONGS!!!!!!! I will never watch another performance with Rickey Minor's name attached to it, including that POS show, "American Idol", but that's another rip off to discuss in a separate forum. This was the worst concert I have ever been to at any venue and we will just stick to John Wiliams, and the occasional July 4th celebration.

To be in the same airspace as Stevie Wonder was nothing short of amazing. I do wish he would have done a few more songs. The other artists were awesome as well. Ricky Minor did a great job!

Stevie Wonder was the reason I bought tickets and he did not even do a good representative set of his own songs. There was too much of the "lesser" acts and Stevie doing other songs true these performers were the backbone of Motown but we came to see Stevie, and to top it off he did not even do anything in the first half . IF this was Ricky minors idea of a good arrangement he is pathetic I could have set up a better mix! It also seems as though Stevie Wonders name was used just to sell tickets as a draw to what was a very lack lustre show with 3rd rate talent no one would pay to see. In essense this was probably the worst event I have ever been to at the Bowl.

It was a great concert, the legendary Stevie Wonder, Ricky Minor, and all his friends delivered us the huge power of Soul. As I learn singing, it was a good experience.

I would have liked to hear more of Stevie Wonder! I liked the other performers but not enough of Stevie Wonder. His House Full of Toys was the same. I would prefer to see just him!!!

I liked how each act was on schedule and didn't leave that much of a time gap between the artists. However, I really wished Janelle Monae could have done more than 3 songs. 5 songs at a minimum would have sufficed. And I'm sure you have received many reviews regarding Stevie Wonder's short performance as well. I wish he had performed more of his original songs and performed for at least an additional 5 songs as well. Overall, I was expecting to be there until at least 11pm, but the show ended around 10:15. The short length of the show was disappointing.

All performers were fun, especially Ms. Sharon Jones. Loved her set! I do wish Stevie had covered more of his songs. He was the reason I bought the tickets. He only covered two of his songs...that was really disappointing. Overall the music was groove and soulful. Note to Mr. Rickey Minor - great job putting together an eclectic, talented group of musicians! Next time PLEASE give us more of Stevie Wonder's own songs, PLEASE! PLEASE!

Rickey Minor is great musician and host!! working different artist and music styles. Stevie wonder greatest ever He brought me and over 17,000 of friends to his living room. history and why music is apart are life's.

I enjoyed the acts but Stevie was MIA for nearly all of the concert, even though he was the top-billed artist. He only sang two of his songs -- one of them as the encore I was very disappointed!

The house @ HB was packed. The performers were whisked on and off the stage making some of the sets too short (e.g. Janelle Monae) Stevie Wonder, as expected, was in great form. Again, his set seemed a bit short. Heard similar comments to mine upon exiting venue. Sound was excellent. Perhaps for the next go around a few less performers and more time with each would make for a more satisfying concert experience.

It was a fantastic show!!! Glad I went! All the artists were great!

Performers were incredible, great blend of talent.

The concert was pretty good - Hollywood Bowl in summer time, great music and a nice bottlw of white. We got there kinda late, but just in time to see the acts we wanted (Grace Potter, Janelle Monaé and Stevie of course!!) The music was great, but I thought that it couldve been longer and Stevie didnt perform "Ribbon in the Sky"...BOO! Other then that, the concert and ambiance was great!

Wonderful evening, great seats, Stevie was unbelievable! It was slow getting started, but totally worth the wait.

I was pleasantly surprised that Stevie perfomed for 40 minutes. He also talked about his past which I prefer. Some of the opening acts were unexpectedly enjoyable, especially Janelle Monae and Grace Potter. Both were high energy, danced all over the stage and brought the house down. Stevie has lost nothing over the years. He sounds as great as ever. It was a perfect evening.

Overall a bit lackluster . AS most everyone was there to see STEVIE he was great for the 10 minutes he was on for. Should of been billed as special apperance by Stevie Wonder.

This was billed as a tribute to Marvin Gaye and the 40th anniversary of his legendary "What's Going On" album. Unfortunately, the tribute was nearly non-existent. Sharon Jones of the Dap Kings sang "Mercy, Mercy, Me", and there was an ensemble song at the end, but that was it. The rest of the evening was two to three songs by a series of unknown artists, some were good, others will probably remain unknown. Then Stevie Wonder came out and did only two of his own songs. Perhaps the concert was better than my review, but it wasn't what I was expecting and it left me wanting for more.

I was disappointed because I was expecting more music from Mr. Stevie Wonder and he only performed TWO songs!! What the hell?!!

I was expecting more from Stevie....He spent a lot of time talking and could have squeezed 2 more songs in at least or could have had one less act and let Stevie play more. He did some great covers but i wanted to hear more from him. Was very dissapointed considering his name was all over the bill. Janelle turned out to be the best of the night.

Had a wonderful evening at the show, made even more special because the future of some bright young musicians will be impacted in a positive way.

I was disappointed that Stevie Wonder didn't play longer. I really enjoyed sone of the other artist but expected him to play more than three of his own songs

I bought tickets because I wanted to see Janelle Monae again..she was awesome! Her performance was everything I wanted, short of seeing her in concert again. I also enjoyed the artists from Mexico and Ghana. I think the tribute to Marvyn Gaye could have been stronger and I thought the set was organized strangely with a lively performance followed by a staid one. I could feel audience participation and mood going up and down as lesser performers followed more dynamic ones. I also wanted more of a performance from Stevie. I love his music and personality, and I wanted to experience more performance and less talking. Over all the concert was great and I would recommend it to friends, especially seeing the youth performing with Stevie at the end of the concert.

Cool event, but we wish Stevie Wonder had played more - more of his own stuff, too

It was a good show, even though the "friends" were showcased I was a little disappointed that we didn't hear more from Stevie Wonders since he was top billing. I don't think he was on for no more than 45 minutes, singing a medley of other artists songs and finally singing one of his hits. The Bowl was full to capacity so I don't think I'm the only one that was a little disappointed.

Kudo's to all the performers. What a great nite at The Bowl. Had family in town and they just loved everything about being at a show at the bowl They couldn't get over the fact that you are allowed to bring food & drinks. Lol!
