It was a great show. We were excited to see both bands... but Styx... WOW!! They were incredible! I would have liked to hear more of Yes from 90125 & Big Generator albums. All in all, after getting our seating arrangements squared away (the seating was horrible), we had an amazing night.

Great to see and hear Yes again after a few tough years for that band.....No one could ever replace Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson...but given the circumstances.. the sound of the band was close to original...Styx was pretty tight also...great visual band to watch...lots of energy in those guys

I've seen Yes several times and they are always great, especially the outdoors shows I have seen. Jon Anderson will not be there, but Squier and Howe and I believe Oliver Wakeman will all be a part of the lineup. The new singer, from what I'd heard sounds like Anderson and I have heard other favorable reviews of his singing. I have never seen Styx, but they should be a capable opening act. I'd give this a five star if the classic Yes lineup were all there,

I just saw Yes in Louisville and they are the gods and one of the founding bands of progressive rock. Styx are simply "bubble gum" Yes. Great, catchy music, but not near the musicians that Yes are. I have seen Yes over 40 times in my life and they have always been spot on. Their music is just a little much for the "casual" fan.

We were lucky, the heaviest rain hit around 6pm, so by the time the show started, it was just a very light drizzle. Shane Alexander was a decent opening act- nice voice. YES..... I was a little disappointed. I became a "fan" in the 80's...90125 and Big Generator, so I really didn't know most of what they played. I also noticed they had some rough segments where their timing was off. It was obvious though, that the people that were there to see YES were fans from the 70's.....I went for STYX, and they can add another awesome performance to their resume. I was so happy that they were the closing band, as their stage performance would have made them a hard act to follow!. They really are still at the top of their game, both physically and musically. You can tell they still love playing together after all these years. Yes, the line up has changed, and I will be the first to say that the current line up is by far the best! Todd Sucherman is a very accomplished drummer, and a great replacement for the late John Panozzo. Lawrence Gowan is a classically trained musician that has had a successful solo career in Canada since the 80's. He has taken a lot of heat as Dennis De Young's replacement, but I personally think he "blends in" better with the other songwriters in the band. He also has a commanding and energetic stage presence!! I didn't know much about Ricky Phillips when he joined a few years ago, but he seems to have blended in with the band just fine. I saw STYX for the first time in 1983 at McNichols Arena when I was 15. Almost 30 years later- I can honestly say I enjoy watching them play just as much now as I did then. In fact, probably more!! I hope they continue to tour for many years to come!!

Styx was awesome, outstanding!! They know how to rock and interacted with the crowd well. Very entertaining. Took our 10 year old son and he loved it. However, the cigarette and mariauna smoke made him nauseous. I wish that could be a bit more controlled in light of children who go to the shows. I did not particularily care for the lead singer of Yes. He did not seem to know what to do with himself when he was not singing. I thought there were more than a few places that his voice was a bit off. The lead guitar had some technical difficulties as well. Overall, the musicians could jam and played some great songs. The lead guitarist was great!!

Styx were great. They played really well and they had a lot of heart and energy. I would absolutely see them again. Yes was just ok. They really didn't seem to want to be there and the music was a bit sloppy. This is coming from a huge Yes fan.

Styx still has the enthusiasm, showmanship and skill to thrill. Tommy Shaw and the other members of Styx appeared to be having a great time during the performance, and pulled the crowd right in. Their talent made me forget the agony of sitting through the halfhearted Yes set. As a whole, Yes was slow, off key, and in many instances sounded as though they were not playing the same song at the same time. Toward the end their sound system was doing something obnoxious, yet it didn't sound much worse than their singing and playing had up to that point. In the end I applauded, only because they were finally done. If they ever attempt another tour, perhaps they could try daily iron supplements and a few months of practice beforehand.

Major rain storm before the concert had us all a little nervous and although the concert started late, it was fabulous. Yes played first, a surprise but they were great. Styx though rocked the house! Had everyone on their feet many times through the night. Great night!!

I am a HUGE Yes fan, and was quite excited about seeing them again (I've seen them 5 times now), and this was my first time catching them at Red Rocks. For some reason, I thought they were the headliners - turns out they were co-headliners and it was their turn to go on first, with Styx closing out the show. So in my head, I had a vision before the concert of Styx going on first, and being so-so, and then Yes following them and completely rocking the place. Turns out it was completely the other way around! Yes started the show and just felt......flat. Like they were tired and a bit wore out. Most of the tempos of their most classic songs were played much slower, and there were several times where the vocals were a bit strained and the playing just.....okay. Very disappointed, as I love the group. Definitely my least favorite concert by them (and Jon Anderson was sorely missed). But then Styx came out and knocked it out of the park! Very energetic and extremely well polished show, with some wonderful playing. And Tommy Shaw still just rocks (and I swear, the dude doesn't age!). They hit all the big hits (for the most part) and put on a heck of a great show. The only thing missing was Dennis DeYoung (that would have been incredible), but the new lead singer did a pretty good job. Nice job Styx!

Yes was forgettable at best. Any appeal they had was lost in the haze of cigarette and marijuana smoke that pervaded the area. They were mediocre at best. Most of their songs rambled on for 10 or more minutes and there were no lyrics that you would walk away singing. Steve Howe and Chris Squire were excellent, but the new leader singer, Benoit David was consistently flat making the harmonies painful to listen to. Styx on the other hand was phenomenal!! They are definitely one of the best live bands out there on tour. They had incredible energy and performed a wonderful show as always. It was great to see Chuck Panazzo during the show. The only bad part of their part of the evening was that it had to end much too soon. They could easily carry a concert all by themselves without extra bands. It's a shame that they have been left out of the Rock 'n Roll Hame of Fame.

WOW. I couldn't believe the amazing sound that came from both bands. YES sounded awesome, just like they did in our younger years. STYX sounded awesome and looked amazing. Yes is done. Song choices were good but the talent is no longer there. Age has caught up with one of my all time favorite bands. Styx was absolutely incredible! It's been 10 years since I've seen them and they blew me away. The new (at least to me) keyboard player and drummer were spectacular additions whose talent and energy were much welcomed. What can I say about Tommy and James Young were incredible performers. By far Styx was the highlight of the evening.

Shane Alexander, never heard of him...now I have really heard him & he was awesome! His light acoustic vibe set the stage for the two great bands that followed him, YES & Styx!!! YES was incredible & like Styx, sounded just as good today as they did when I fell in love with them...the weather held-out & it was a perfect night of great music, to hang with a nice crowd in a mesmerizing setting...I give this concert a SOLID A~!~

Styx put on a hell of a show-very good!! I've been a Yes fan since they started, been to lots of concerts over the years. This was the worst. I was disappointed. Lead singer isn't even close to Jon Anderson and his voice on high notes is even shrill. The band sounded like they hadn't practiced for awhile. Geoff Downes is good in his own right, but isn't in the same arena with Rick Wakeman. I know these guys are getting old, but I still expected more. Saw them at this same venue for 35th tour and they were excellent. I won't see them again without Anderson and Wakeman. Its probably time for them to retire if they cannot do any better. First time I saw Styx and I was impressed. They played circles around Yes.

STYXandYES
This was just a great night of great music that wound up happening despite the threatening skies and the storm that passed just prior to show time. It's hard to figure out bands that have been around a long time and are as well established as both YES and STYX are. YES technically started in 1969 and STYX was a band for the 1970's and early 80's. So when YES takes 10 years to make a new studio disc with a new singer when it was thought the band my be finished - it's a wonder. Some fans will certainly say it's not the same without John Anderson's voice - but it was a great show and YES had some minor whether challenges to deal with which slightly delayed the show twice. In the end it didn't matter, YES is one of the most influential bands for the ages, naturally they did not fail to deliver. Song after song it was YES at their greatest - even in debuting their new 20 minute epic for the fans. YES stood tall in a market that probably favored STYX with regard to the turnout - at the end of it all YES had solid timing as always but really hit their peak at the end in amazing fashion with the likes of Starship Trooper and Roundabout. STYX was a shocker - more so Tommy Shaw than the band but they did not fail to deliver high energy, heart felt, and soul delivering, and memoir rock and roll that ranged from the delicate classics to the hard driven staples that made them a pop sensation way back when. Tommy Shaw is clearly the spark plug to this band, but he surpasses so many expectations you might have of him or the band. The fact is they were very entertaining. Shaw put it best when he said that their songs still meant something to so many and that while the days of album rock radio are gone - he threw out the challenge for the audience to live their dreams and to not be afraid in doing so. That was the genius of Tommy Shaw at Red Rocks with his band-mates who have toured 13 straight years - long past their most popular era to large crowds everywhere. The only reason this show get four out of five stars is both bands should have been allowed to squeeze in 2-3 more songs at the very least.

There were rainbows, a lightening show, just a few spinkles, and plenty of rock & roll. Shane had a nice set. The replacement lead singer for YES did an excellent job. The sound was crisp and clear for all of the bands. The wet floors only caused a few technical problems that YES utilized to their advantage. The video feeds were very entertaining. This was the first time that I had seen STYX. They were a much harder rockin' band than I had imagined. Hit after hit just kept coming with a variety of different lead singers and lead guitar players. The keyboard player was wacko! Both bands still produced quality vocals and riffs after all these years. There is more talent in these two old bands than any of the modern crap played today. The only problem at this concert were the lazy people behind me that could not get off there ass to watch the show and wanted me to sit down. Rock & Roll is soo uplifting and dance worthy, how can you just sit there???

I felt that both Yes & Styx left too many songs unplayed, mostly Styx. Maybe they could have left out the first singer, Shane Alexander, and played more of their songs. Having said that, the concert was very good with Styx really getting the audiance involved. Very enjoyable.

I'm 60 and grew up with Yes. They did a great job, even w/o Anderson and Wakeman. Their new lead singer, David Benoit, they got from a cover band -- voice just like Anderson's. He recorded the new album, first in 10 years from the group. Played big numbers and included a new release, "Fly Fron Here." It was vintage Yes! Great act! Much better than the last time I saw them a few years ago. Styx was a high energy act that included some signature numbers (Lady, Grand Illusion, Foolin' Yourself). For my age and interest, I'd say a above average, but for someone who grew up w/this band, they were probably much better.,

In spite of some rain just before show time, YES and STYX played a fantastic show at the Rocks. The voices and musical abilities were at the upper end. Grand Illusion hits were done extremely well and YES got everyone ready as a warm-up. My friend and I did the Meet & Greet package. It was a spectacular show and meeting the artists was an unforgettable experience. My friend is a huge fan of Chris Squire - as a matter of fact, Mr Squire was his first inspiration to play bass guitar, and has 3 cds on CD Baby right now. Our picture was made with the Yes, and my friend proudly has the picture as well as the autographed picture of Yes proudly displayed at his home. What a tribute! As for me, I couldn't make up my mind which performer to stand with in the group shot. I, like everyone else who purchased the Meet & Greet, were so excited, that I couldn't think of the right words to give praise and wish them well on their new journey, although the expression "Fly From Here" crossed my mind afterwards. So here's the bottom line - The talent of each artist exceeded any expectation I had glimpsed in my imagination. A loyal fan who wishes Yes great success now and in the future.

I see STYX every time they are in the Atlanta area, and this was one of my favorite performances. I LOVED the different backgrounds (especially the multicolored 70's lights) and the close-ups on all the band members. They don't always play my favorite, "Suite Madam Blue" but they did this time! Tommy Shaw Rocks! This was my first time seeing Yes, and I was not disappointed. They put on a great show as well. I miss the days when songs lasted 8 minutes! They sound as good as they did in the past, if not better. Also, the organ made the night! Great show!!!

My boyfriend and I went to the concert because he loves Yes and I love Styx. But after seeing the average performance of Yes compared to the BRILLIANT performance by Styx, my boyfriend converted to being a true Styx fan. Styx defines classic rock and what rock should be. Styx brings amazing energy and commands the stage. Your ears will be ringing after the show, but it's worth it. Any person at any age should go to see Styx. You have to be made of stone to not love it. This is compared to the group that opened for them, Yes. I give Yes props for being out there and still playing their music, but they are the reason I didn't give the show a full five stars. It seemed at any moment the lead guitarist would keel over from a heart attack. I was also pretty sure that at some part in the performance, they would have to take a break to take their pills and vitamins. This accompanied by a lead singer (a recruit from a Yes tribute band) who pounded on completely unnecessary tambourines, bongos, and cowbells. But, they still sound good. It's just a lackluster show. Bottom line: Styx should have toured with REO again. THAT'S a combination that you will NEVER forget. Rock on!

Verizon Wireless is a great venue....very comfortable with good sound and nice seating. Easy in and out too with plenty of people and traffic cops to help. YES opened the show after a brief appearance by a solo, acoustic singer out of California. I'm not going to dwell too much on YES because, unfortunately, they weren't very good. I guess age has taken it's toll, and they DO look OLD! All of the beautiful harmonies they used to have were missing, with all of the flat notes they sang making me want to cringe a little bit. Nothing like the days of the 70's when YES was the most progressive band out there and put on great shows. Such a shame. I'd give YES two stars. On the other hand, STYX gave one of the most incredible rock performances I've EVER seen! Absolutely amazing!! Such fantastic musicians, with a sound that defies description because it was so perfect. It was hard to believe I was actually listening to a live performance. It was really spectacular! They had harmonies that were dead on and musicianship that was killer! Great show with lots of hits, fantastic lighting, and wonderful album cuts from one of the best bands to ever grace a rock & roll stage. Their concert was probably an hour and a half but it seemed like it lasted only 10 minutes. Wow! If you ever have the chance to see STYX in concert...GO! You won't be disappointed. STYX was a FIVE STAR concert!

B.David sounded like and had the same mannerisms as Jon on stage, keeping the Yes experience intact (still miss you Jon, and wishing you all the best!). The song selection was phenominal! Really great evening overall, but Styx stole the show. They were far more energetic than Yes and much more committed to giving a great overall performance. Yes played very well and performed their classics plus the single off the new album, as they should given their skill level, but there was just no energy onstage. Styx came on like a formula 1 race car from the start and never let up the entire evening. It was especially great to see Chuck Panozzo join them on bass for several songs at the end of the set. If you're into classic and prog rock, this is definitely a good double bill to catch. Verizon is the best outdoor live venue in Atlanta hands down, I highly recommend any show there in terms of the facility experience.

I bought two tickets for this show. I did this as a mothers day present so we could have a good time. My mom is a huge yes fan. When she was at tulane univ NO, she got to see them b4 they made it big. I was introduced to YES bc of her and am a huge fan myself. We both had a fantastic time and couldn't get over how great they still sound. If anything they could have played longer. But then again you can never have enough YES. What makes it even better is that we also got to see Styx tear it up!!! MY mom loved her gift and we both had a night we won't forget.

Yes was a phenomenal treat to see. Both they and Styx had far to many visuals that distracted from the music, but I'm an old fart now I guess, and so, what the hell do I know! Yes should clearly be paying royalties to the estate of Stan Brakhage for all the hand-scratched visual background imagery, while Styx was something of a parody of themselves, attempting to relive the glam rock thing in spite of their teeth whitening, botox, leather pants, and rogane-inspired hairdos. I heard about as much of Styx as I needed to in my teenage years in the 80s and wish we could have left it at that. I really wish I could have seen another 60 minutes of Yes instead ot the self-congratulatory spectacle of Styx paying homage to themselves by dropping names of legendary progressive rock groups with whom they associate themselves, including Yes, King Crimson and others. Rob Reiner must have had Styx in mind when creating the movie "This is Spinal Tap". The shoulder-to-shoulder guitar-hero thing may have been great as an encore, but seeing it in every other piece was something of a joke IMO. Yes was missing Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, but it was still great to see legends Chris Squire and Steve Howe shredding the classic repertoire of Yes with inspired proficiency. The "ringers", who I admittedly did not know, did a great job keeping up and blending in.

Never seen Yes before, so this was a rare treat for me. To see them play the music that is played in classic rock stations and to see those great songs played in front of you eyes was totally awsome! Styx brought back memories of the good days of the big hair bands when rock was rock, compared to most bands today. A great show of classic rock!

Yes opened the show with all those familiar hits I grew up with and some new stuff that definitely pleased. The only good thing to happen when Yes leftthe stage was Styx came on. The joint got jumpin' and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Styx again. I saw them at Fiddler's Green in1991 and they rocked. This concert was just as good but I miss Dennis DeYoung. I won't say this Styx concert was better but it was differnet without Dennis on the keyboards. Chuck Panazzo's return was incredible. Styx and Yes came to Colorado to rock and they did...even with the thunderstorm an hour before showtime. I drove from Cheyenne, WY for the concert.

I have been a huge YES fan for many years. This show was a big disappointment. Silly me, I thought YES would be the headliner but see in retrospect why they were not. There comes a time when all rock stars need to hang it up and for this bunch I would say now's the time. The band just is not the same without Jon Andersons' beautiful voice. The music sounded like it was a beat behind on every song and just missed the mark on all counts. Styx was fine but I never loved their music and didn't come to see them. At least they could move around the stage, unlike the guys in YES who looked like they needed walkers to get around.

This show was absolutely incredible. It was like all of my childhood memories in rock concert form, since I grew up listening to Styx and especially Yes. Seriously, Come Sail Away was a spiritual experience for me. This was the concert of a lifetime for me. I was amazed at how energetic both bands were, and they were of course, better than I ever imagined. Shane Alexander was good too, I liked his songs and he has a great voice.

The Red Rocks Amphitheatre had amazing sound, and was a beautiful location. However, there were too many drunk people. Yes was very good. They aren't as good as they were 40 years ago, but it's not the originals. They played only 3 songs from the past--all else was newer numbers.

Seeing Yes in concert was a life highlight! The sound was fantastic; voices and harmonies were spot on. Energy was stratospheric from the band to the audience. Styx put on a great show filled with enthusiasm and good vibes. Vocals were stellar. It was so fun to hear the awesome songs of the 80's.

Yes, Styx and Shane Alexander gave a good show at Red Rocks under some very difficult stormy conditions. Yes, I've seen them better, but felt they were hampered somewhat with a shorter set than usual. It's hard for those guys to keep things short. Also, they seemed to have a little trouble with their sound system at the outset, but don't know if that was a byproduct of the weather. Keyboardist Geoff Downes is a good addition, and appears much more engaged than Oliver Wakeman. I remember Downes at a previous show with Asia, shaking hands with the fans and posing for photographs. He's quite a personable guy, but doesn't compare with Rick Wakeman. Higlights were Yours Is No Disgrace, new title song from Fly From Here, Heart of the Sunrise and Starship Trooper. Styx was surprisingly a good match. Don't know much about them, but they definitely rocked, had good theatrics and some good instrumental touches. Recalled a lot of their classic songs when they played them. Disappointments were certain idiot members of the audience, who just were outright rude and bothersome, especially during the Yes set. "Sit down and shut up. No one cares about your personal soap operas." I don't know, the Red Rocks crowd was definitely much better behaved and engaged when Peter Gabriel performed there in June. Of course, that was the show of a lifetime. Maybe, that's because Pete looks kind of like Anthony Hopkins or an axe murderer or someone you don't want to mess with. Maybe, the Yes band needs to take a few lessons from Gabriel in securing better audience behavior. Also very impressed with the turnout and all the folks in nutty Yes t-shirts. Don't know how much longer these guys will play, but it's always fun to see them even if they aren't at the top of their game. (And they aren't). Hopefully, Yes will come back with a much longer and adventuristic set.

Not a fan of YES, so we sat through their set unimpressed and only knew about four of the songs they played. Seemed strange that they were paired with Styx actually. But once Styx stepped on stage, it was all worth it. We've seen Styx for the last 5-6 years every time they have played in Denver and again were not disappointed. Their energy, stage presence, performance, and songs are so awesome. We were fans back in the 80's, but now even more so. Tommy Shaw is absolutely amazing and it seems the entire band is having such a great time entertaining and the audience certainly was into it. I would have a very hard time resisting buying continued concert tickets to see them over and over again in the future. If you like the music of Styx, you won't want to miss seeing them in person!!!!!

I'm not a big Yes fan, but to be honest they were very good. I went mainly to see Styx, and man they did not disappoint. Styx came out and right from the start they were full of energy. The crowd was on their feet most of the entire show. Styx was on fire. They looked like a bunch of guys in their 20's they way they were moving all around the stage non stop. The sound was dead on all night long. Some artists can sing great live, but can't work a stage, others can work the stage, but don't sound good doing it. Styx mastered both. They came out for the encore throwing merchandise to the audience. The fans were going crazy. At the end of the show they threw every drum stick and guitar pick they could find to the crowd, and all of us in the first 10 rows ate it up. Only regret was the show didn't last longer. Styx could have easily had their own concert without anyone else. Already looking to see where I can go see them again. Thanks guys for a GREAT concert.

This was my fifth Yes show, the first being at the Philly Spectrum during the Drama tour. 7/14/11 was the best of the five. The audience was very loudly enthusiastic. The band reacted by having fun and really putting everything they had into it. The crowd reacted. The band reacted. Yes gets five stars and the crowd gets four, which is a lot of stars for an older Southern crowd listening to English rock. Benoit David has his own voice and phrasing, and it works very well. I don't want to hear someone trying to sound exactly like someone else. Styx worked hard and put on an energetic show. The crowd was hugely enthusiastic. Larry Gowan may offend some by overdoing his stagemanship but he's got the credentials. He's been big in Canada for a long time. Styx tend towards Spinal Tap posing etc. but the crowd liked it. Styx plays in front of a giant wall of what look like Marshall amps but none are miked. They are fake. I'm not a Styx fan but I must give credit where it's due. They put on a good show. They work hard to entertain.

I loved both Yes and Styx. I was a big fan of yes in the late 70s so it was great to see them again. Although, Yes doesn't play the "get up and dance" kind of music, their talent is still there. Their music is amazing. Styx, of course, didn't disappoint me either. I saw both of these bands in the 70s and/or 80s and they made it timeless. Both sounded really good and, since I grew older with them, they looked great too. Tommy Shaw is still just as cute as he was back in the 80s. There voices are still fabulous. Styx got everyone up dancing. Recommend that you listen to Styx Greatest hits before you go. Most the songs they sang are on that album and you will remember how great they are.

We really enjoyed the Yes show and thought they had a great set...... So I'm thinking, well I hope STYX plays good too. We saw STYX a few years ago in the Gwinnett Arena with REO Speedwagon and they had a really good show. So the lights go down and BOOM. over an hour and a half of the Best STYX Rock and Roll I could have ever imagine. What a fantastic show and showmanship. The Verizon Encore Venue is really supportive of a high fidelity, modern rock concert. Growing up in the late 70's in norther Indiana, we really loved this group and guys. Thank you STYX Guys for a spectacular show. I've been filling up my I-Pod since last Thursday with the songs I forgot were so great.

My boyfriend and I have gone to several concerts together over the past five years. I have also attended concerts my whole life. He and I both agreed that this was one of the best concerts yet. He is a total Yes fan, and he thought it was just a bonus that he would get to see Styx also. I am a huge Styx fan and I have always loved many Yes songs through the years. I thought that it was great that Yes would be opening for Styx. He was so impressed by how much he loved Styx, and I was blown away by Yes. The fact that both groups were so awesome made this one of the best concerts he and I have been to. Both groups have unbelievable talent. As I watched both groups, I felt so lucky to be watching legendary talent. We traveled from Charlotte, North Carolina to Atlanta to see this concert, and it was more than worth it.

Well, here's one for the "old school" books!! Yes opened the show and even without Jon Anderson, they were great and sounded like they always did. They were an excellent opening band because I was also a fan of theirs back in the day. But, Styx, WOW!!! They put on a great show and again, even without a member, Dennis DeYoung, they were as good as ever. Tommy Shaw looks the same and certainly sounds the same! We were rocked the entire time we were there and also loved the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, nice place! You couldn't beat this bang for the buck!!!

YES- This is the third time I've seen YES live and I think that the lack of Anderson and Wakeman was felt. Their replacements (Benoit David and Geoff Downes) are both good, but neither brought anything new to the old songs. Not surprisingly, where they both stood out was on the new song, FLY FROM HERE, which they participated in writing and, thus, didn't have to perform in the shadows of Anderson and Wakeman. The fact that it's actually a really good song in classic YES style helped a lot. Steve Howe really stole the show, though. Watching him was a real treat. STYX- This is fourth time I've seen Styx in concert in three years and every time has been amazing. As with Boston and Foreigner in years past, they completely out performed their partner band. While the YES portion of the show was great, the STYX half was more energetic, exciting and emotionally charged. The only band I've ever seen live with more stage presence than Styx is Bon Jovi. Styx, quite simply, ROCKS. If there was any downside to the show, its that both bands' sets are entirely too short, which is typical of two-band shows. You get enough time for them to cover the major hits and then its over.

I came mainly to see Yes. I'm a huge fan. I was disappointed in their performance. The lead singer was off key on a number of songs and just couldn't hit or sustain the high notes. A couple of the songs seemed sluggish and too slow. But the audience was forgiving and appreciative. As we get older, and our musical icons get older, we do tend to be more patient and understanding. I have always liked some of the songs by Styx but have only seen them perform live once, back when Grand Illusion was released. A number of months ago I caught them perform on TV with a youth orchestra and really enjoyed ALL the music and their performance, so I had high hopes. And they more than delivered. High energy, fun, on the money with harmonies and on key. I was thankful they were the closing act.

We sat 24th row on the floor, center stage. Last time I saw Yes was 30 years ago and while this concert wasn't as long (and Styx was the main attraction, still good though) it was still incredible to hear their tight musicianship. They played many favorites, Steve Howe was awesome on the guitar, Chris Squire rocked, Jon Anderson still hit the high notes, Bill Bruford was right on the beat and I don't know who took Rick Wakeman's place. Styx was surprisingly excellent. I do not have them on my ipod but used to have Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight on vinyl. Tommy Shaw and company rocked!

I thoroughly enjoyed Yes, but I wasn't enthralled with Styx. Yes opened the show. Y'all know who they are and what they do, so I don't need to go into what they sound like. I was interested, though, to note that their stage show was pretty basic. The git-tarist stood at stage right, the keyboard rack took up stage left, and the vocals and bass shared center stage right and left, respectively, with the drum riser at rear middle. Part of that, I'm sure, is due to the fact that Yes was the opening band, and as such, they couldn't do a huge setup. Still, it puzzled me a bit that such a huge and influential band was the opening act, and they didn't have a fancy stage or a big-ass lightshow to dazzle the audience. They did have a huge video screen in back, though, and the projections were trip-tastic--lotsa Roger Dean art, naturally--so the audience had something interesting to look at, but generally speaking, the band didn't offer a lot of flash. The music was superb, though. Yes played a 75-minute set featuring a nice selection of songs including Starship Trooper, I've Seen All Good People, Roundabout, Owner of a Lonely Heart, Heart of the Sunrise, and the title track off their brand-new studio album, Fly From Here. The band wasn't as crisp as its studio recordings would suggest, but the added looseness of live playing gave old, familiar songs a chance to breathe anew, mostly to their benefit. I had no choice but to sit back, chill out, and groove. Styx, in contrast, was all about the flash. The band members are musically talented fellows, I'll grant--the keyboardist and two guitarists trade off lead vocals, every member of the band plays their instrument quite well--and they're pros who know how to put on a helluva spectacle, complete with engaging stage patter, but to reverse the common phrase, the whole was less than sum of its parts. Ironically, one of the band members articulated the essential problem with Styx when he addressed the audience. He said (and I paraphrase), "You came here for the rock show." Yeah...that's it exactly. Styx put on a rock show, not a concert, and I found myself thinking that their brand of glossy arena rock is exactly why punk rock developed. With mid-to-late 1970 radios spewing the mechanical, predictable, soulless, corporate rock of Styx, punk simply had to happen. I totally understand, and I'm not even a fan of punk. Anyhoo, even though Styx's show was sterile as an operating theater, I stuck around so I could hear them play Come Sail Away, which (of course) was their pre-encore last song, followed by Renegade. In the meantime, I enjoyed a few of their songs and recognized a handful that I hadn't realized were by them. They played (among the ones I recognized/can figure out the titles to/can recall) Blue Collar Man, The Grand Illusion, Lady, Lorelei, Miss America, Crystal Ball, and Too Much Time On My Hands. Had they cut their setlist in half--or even just played BCM, TMTOMH, and their last two songs--I would've been entirely content.

It seems as though Yes is still adjusting to their newest keyboard player, Geoff Downes, and Steve Howe playing 'owner of a lonely heart' was a bit humorous, but they were clearly captivating and, at points in the show, on fire. Kudos to Benoit David and Geoff Downes for having the chutzpa to step into their roles. Styx, on the other hand, was firing on on all 12 cylinders during their entire set. Tommy Shaw looked and sounded like he wasn't a day over 35. Even JY, who is the least gifted of the three singers, was on fire for Renegade. They significantly exceeded my expectations. This show begs me to ask why aren't either of these bands in the so-called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I have seen YES many times spanning over 30 years, including twice in small venues with Jon's replacement, Benoit David. I hate that Jon is no longer touring with them, and even more hate the friction it has caused....but David is a very capable replacement. He was found singing with a Canadian tribute band called "Close to the Edge" (you can probably still find them on youtube). When I saw the band in ATL in 12/2008, it was shortly after they'd canceled the full YES tour earlier in the year due to Jon's illness. We ran into the cousin of Alan White (YES drummer) in a local pub pre-show and asked him how the new singer was sounding - his answer, in British accent was, "he sounds more like Jon than Jon does". Taking my 20 year old son to see them in ATL on 7/14. Oh yeah, Styx is there too....not a big fan, but don't hate them either.

I have seen Yes several times in concert at a different venue. They were fabulous every time and never failed to deliver their music even better than on their albums. I'm not a big Styx fan, though. I had hope Yes would return this year so I could see them again, and I hope it's the full line up with Jon Anderson. But since this is a dual concert with a band I don't particularly care for (Styx), I guess I will miss them this year. I'll recommend this to anyone that likes both, or willing to sit through until they get to the band they want to hear. :)

Yes was absolutely terrific. Styx is tired. I had seen Styx many many times and just wasn't the same, not that anything is the same but..... I had disappointment in that people just don't sit down!
