Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming Sings Sappy SongsNamed one of the most fun people in show business by Time Magazine, Olivier and Tony-Award winning actor, singer and author Alan Cumming makes his debut in Melbourne with a raucous one-man show. Alan Cumming: Sings Sappy Songs is an eclectic, wildly entertaining mix of intimate stories - from the sentimental to the sassy - and witty reinterpretations of pop songs and stage classics, especially tailored for his tour down under.Sings Sappy Songs is inspired by Cumming’s year hosting the infamous “Club Cumming” in his dressing room during the revival of Cabaret on Broadway and recently scored rave reviews during a residency at New York’s legendary Carlyle Hotel.  Joining him on stage for a night of irreverent humour and mischief-making is long-time collaborator and Emmy Award-winning musical director Lance Horne.

Great sense of humor, really connected with his audience, great venue (The Majestic Theater in San Antonio). The only negative was the volume - too loud. The yelps of praise from the Texas audience were also deafening. Otherwise great fun.

My first trip to the Stiefel Theatre in Salina was to see Alan Cumming's "Legal Immigrant" cabaret show. I was blown away! He and his band put on a great show. The music was wonderful. He told funny stories and seemed so upbeat. He kept the audience laughing. I would love to see him again. The theatre was so nice. I will definitely be going back to Salina for more shows, and if I see Alan Cumming anywhere near my area again, I will definitely buy a ticket.

Most people know Alan Cumming from "The Good Wife", without realizing he has stunningly performed on Broadway, most notably as the MC in "Cabaret". Based on this performance, his persona seems more like the latter than the former, which is a good thing. This autobiographical show is naughty, poignant, exuberant and opinionated. As he relates his story as a gay lad from Scotland who left home and sought his fortune in the theater, with missteps and accolades along the way, he intersperses appropriate songs. He was accompanied by a pianist, cellist and guitarist/drummer, all of whom were excellent musicians, playing in an understated fashion, allowing Mr. Cumming to shine. He included some commentary on current values and events, which were welcomed by the majority of the audience. Sassy, funny and not necessarily politically correct, the adience was laughing and crying with him, enjoying the evening.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect but the evening turned out to be wonderful! Alan Cumming was very funny but has many moments of sad personal issues. The song list was a variety of covers and Scottish songs. It was a great evening!!!!

This show was all the things that Alan Cumming is: talented, witty, smart, funny, and just a touch melancholy in between. He put on a great show, and I was glad I got to see it. Fun and worthwhile!

Alan Cumming is an amazingly talented performer. Obviously he is a versatile actor, but he also has a rich and powerful voice that will move you to your core. The song choices in his Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs performance are a unique mix of, yes, sappy, but also deeply moving and unique choices. He is a gifted storyteller, who will draw you in with his very personal tales of his remarkable life. It was a most enjoyable evening, shared with both my husband and daughter.

As a season holder I've seen several Broadway plays and attended a few live performances this year at the Majestic. I have to admit that Alan Cumming was by far the best I've seen this year. Perhaps because he is one of my favorite TV stars, or Broadway performers, I enjoyed him so much. However, this is the first time I've seen him perform by himself. He OWNED that stage. Loved it!

I went to see Eli from The Good Wife. I went to see any of the characters so well played by Alan Cumming. I was treated to- no, thrilled by this funny, transparent and immensely talented performer. He didn't just sing sappy songs, he embodied them. I left feeling as though I had been to a top Broadway musical performance. Bravo!

This show was a JOY! Great singing - new arrangements of pop music - complete re-interpretations of songs we all know and love. The patter was hilarious - show biz stories and personal accounts of experiences in Alan's life. I had seen clips from YouTube, but the show was 100x better than I expected. A meet and greet, and/or some merchandise would have made a terrific evening an over the top event.

In spite of the rest of the audience I often felt that he and I were having our own conversation and he was singing to me. He is so talented and so personable. I understood all the songs because of his clear articulation. Every song was delightful. Every story either funny or poignant or both. I would see it again.

Entertaining, funny, engaging, and incredible voice. He could have cut short the in between song stories a bit. Would have liked to have heard at least one song from Cabaret.

A true force to be reckoned with, Alan Cumming delivered a phenomenal show! We've seen him perform "Macbeth" on Broadway (a ONE-MAN show, nonetheless) and "Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs" showed us another side of this unbelievably talented performer. He is not afraid to show his personal side and, without singing songs we all are familiar with, he reviled a sensitive, extremely intelligent person - and was also absolutely hysterical at times! Touching on the current political situation in the USA and his personal life, he covered both ends of the spectrum of baring your soul. We would love to see this show again - preferably at the Cafe Carlyle in NYC! DON'T MISS THIS SHOW IF YOU CAN GET TO A PERFORMANCE!

I'm a big fan of Alan Cumming and missed seeing him in Cabaret in 2014. I watched the Good Wife the entire time, and have seen him interviewed several times. He is incredibly talented and funny. I figured he'd be a little scandalous, and he was... in a GREAT way! I bought 4 tickets and took 2 of my friends that attended the 2014 Tony Awards with me, plus one other... we all loved it!

Alan Cumming is a gift! The show did give that cabaret vibe, even though it was performed in a larger venue. The evening was a lovely blend of stories and songs, and Alan sounded amazing and gave a very moving performance, covering songs from Annie Lennox to Miley Cyrus and, much to my delight, entertained with some show tunes as well. I hope to see this kind of show again from this multitalented entertainer!

Sing Sappy Songs? He sang a few but too few. Spent most of the show telling stories that weren't very interesting. Very talented musicians around him that made him look ok.

Alan describes himself as an actor who sings; he is likewise a wonderful singer who acts! Honestly, i was not familiar with most of the songs, but they were most enjoyable, and his Hollywood banter was interspersed just enough to fill 90 minutes of solid entertainment. His vocal range is amazing, and accompanied by piano, drums and cello, the effect was mesmerizing. The shock: nothing from Cabaret!

I wasn't sure what to expect since my initial knowledge of Alan Cumming is from "The Good Wife." The evening felt like it was taking place in a small intimate cabaret even though it was in a fairly large theater. He's got a really great voice (and of course that lovely Scottish accent!) He sang a variety of heartfelt songs with a 3 piece ensemble of piano, drums, and cello and told stories of his life along the way. I would highly recommend it!

Alan Cumming was so engaging and entertaining. We laughed, we cried, we listened. I knew him mostly as an actor and was aware that he was a musical theater actor, but I didn't know what a good singer he was. This show combined songs that had emotional connection and the story-telling aspect tied everything together very well. I highly recommend this if you enjoy Alan's work.
