After finally recording his first solo album "Everyday Robots", Damon Albarn came to Boston as part of a small tour before heading back to Europe to play festivals this summer. Getting to see him in this small 1200-person capacity venue was a treat. While the songs off his solo album are mostly "downbeat" (Damon's words), the arrangements provided by a full band resulted in a lot more energy and excitement compared to the album versions of the same songs (similar to what happens to Radiohead when they play their newer material live). The show consisted of 21 songs and lasted about an hour and forty-five minutes. The setlist covered 9 songs from "Everyday Robots", 4 songs by Blur, 5 songs from Gorillaz. 2 songs from The Good, The Bad & The Queen and 1 song by Rocket Juice & the Moon. While this might have been one of the only shows where Clint Eastwood wasn't played, we got a special treat in hearing the first ever performance of Blur's "Song 2" not played by Blur. Evidently, they spent some time sound-checking the song earlier in the day. The band was great with three of the four members having been part of the 2010 Gorillaz touring line-up.

Great show. Really was a pleasant surprise. Had a great band with six person choir that came out at the end. And for what it's worth, Damon just seemed like a nice guy. From my review title, I thought it was a more upbeat show than I was expecting. I like Blur, but don't know more than the most famous tunes. But I am inspired to pick up Damon's newest.

Damon Albarn is such an excellent performer - he is clearly going to have a long musical life, beyond Blur and Gorillaz. The setlist was a perfect combination of old familiars (Song 2? What?!) and tracks from Albarn's recently-released solo album.

Enjoyed this concert very much...he played his solo stuff as well as a good selection from his bands Blur and Gorillaz. Ever the consummate frontman, he held the audience's attention with an enthusiastic performance. His talent is palpable.

Well, maybe he is a god, but I have no way of verifying that. The Boston show was mesmerizing. As in New York, he did songs from the contemplative side of all of his musical forays (with the exception of Dr. Dee and Monkey-Journey to the West)....until the end when, for the first time ever, folks, he performed Song 2 without Blur! This rocked the Royale. Unfortunately, he didn't perform This Is a Low because of that, but hey, I saw history. A wonderful moment was right at the beginning of Mr. Tembo, when someone tossed Damon a knitted elephant cap, replete with tusks and trunk and ears. Damon put it on and was grinning that timeless Damon Albarn grin from ear to ear. You can see a video of it posted below. Wow, Morrissey and Damon Albarn within two days of each other. I can quit right here.

Damon albarn is such a talented songwriter and performer. I'm so glad I got to catch him and the heavy seas live. What an experience! Blur, gorillaz, the good the bad and the queen, rocketjuice and the moon, and his solo work. Unreal.

The show was amazing. Damom performed songs from all his incarnations - solo, Gorillaz, Blur and The Giod, the Bad and The Queen. It was great how he engaged with audience. I saw him with Gorillaz at Madison. While a great show, this set list and venue were better for me.

Seeing a major rock figure in such an intimate venue is a rare privilege, not to be missed. Loved the combination of gorillaz and blur songs though probably not the best picks from the back catalog. Last time I saw Albarn was last year with blur in a massive stadium... what a change!
