The actors are great, the story is really well adapted, you can notice Bono and The Edge music style and the acrobatics are great, seeing Spiderman fighting with the Green Goblin in the air was great.

Most of what makes this a $65 million show was what made it so good. Take that out and it is mediocre, with a slow moving plot line. We felt it was a bit long and there was too much of the Achridia lady...too dark for kids. However, just to see what they did in a theatre that size is worth the price of admission!

Everyone knows that the only reason to go see this turkey is for the schadenfraude of seeing one of the actors fall from the overly elaborate flying appartati. However, after seeing Saturday's 8PM performance, I felt so bad for the cast -- who are generally talented -- that I wouldn't have been able to enjoy seeing any of them injured. The director and producers of this fiasco, however, should be shamed out the industry. Music by Bono/Edge is OK and would be more impactful if the script wasn't so weak / audience cared at all about the characters. Likewise, set is beautiful but overshadowed by the conspicuous mechanics for flight/aerial fight scenes (all of which required the production to halt during our performance). Story/plot is also incredibly weak and struggles to merge a dense storyline that everyone already knows with a bunch of incoherrent drivel about greek mythology that never pays off and only prolongs the pain. Very stripped down productions tied to the music could work as either a childten's musical (losing the trippy mythology stuff) or adult fare (losing the retelling of the base story) could work without all the flying crap but would unlikely recoup the production cost. Aweful.. just aweful

By investigating the mythological Arachne--a magical weaver whose creations look impossibly real--Taymor tries to explore her own remarkable theatrical gifts; Taymor has, after all, been weaving beautiful and surprising theatrical performances for decades. This musical, however, goes badly astray. Aside from the famous special effects--and, better than the flying is the straight-down view from the top of the Chrysler Building--the music is tunelessly bland and forgettable (in fact, already forgotten), the lyrics very difficult to hear, the story chaotic and reliant on gimmicks, and the ending bizarrely weak and unconvincing. With a great budget comes great responsibility, and this Spider Man falls terribly short of that responsibility.

The Spider-man experience was about what we'd come to expect: an emphasis on the spectacle, rather than the story. Director Julie Taymor is clearly a genius of stagecraft, but she is also listed as the co-writer, and that's where things fell down. The heart of the Spider-man story is the relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, and in this show, the two main characters are completely upstaged by the scenery. They appear small. There is precious little humor, despite the presence of old pro Patrick Page as the Green Goblin. The music is forgettable and not in keeping with musical theater tradition; you don't leave the theater humming anything. What Taymor has added to the story is a strange, and often bizarre, mishmosh of a Greek god myth and Grimm's fairy tale, which brings to life extremely corny, Power Ranger style villains. Though the flying acrobatics are fine, the characters often land out of the viewing range of much of the audience. Overall, the movie is a far more satisfying experience.

You'll love it! It's Stan Lee meets Cirque Du Soleil meets The Wall meets Dr. Seuss meets Nascar meets Bono in tights! It's amazing what the cast has to be great at: Acting, Singing AND High Wire acrobats!

I took my wife and 2 children (age 8,10) to the 2/5 matinee. I am not a big fan of Broadway plays, but I am a fan of Spiderman and U2. I did not love the music but the sets and the action were extraordinary. Everyone loved it. I do not understand all of the reviews bashing this show. It got a standing ovation.

The show was good, the music was great, the 'stunts' were cool and worthy of the hype. The story was what disappointed me. For the most part it was the Peter Parker/Spider-man beginnings story but they threw in the Arachne storyline from Greek Mythology and a group of teenagers that seemed to be "writing" the comic book as the show went along. The actors were great, singing and music were great and they kept a cool comic book look and feel to the sets and action but the story was a little disappointing and they could have gone a different route than the Arachne story. I would recommend it though, especially for Spider-man and U2 fans.

The first half of the show is quite impressive and you feel like you just signed up for something really good. Even the technical difficulties made the first half a joy to witness. Sadly, however, the second half leaves you wanting and wondering if this play is still about Spiderman or just two random people singing after every line is delivered. My biggest suggestion would be to cut a couple of songs off and add a lot more action scenes. This is a Spiderman show after all, know your target audience, please them and the rest will come.

I went in preview... not a comic book type story fan but I wanted to see the effects. They were great. Clever and innovative. The rest bored me: dull story, no memorable music, too much flying around. Fine for kids or real Spiderman fans, but not a good evening of tehater.

The monotonous music - - thump rock mixed with entirely forgettable ballads, is relieved by the high jinks. It's a comic book story, so it's not fair to expect something more, but the characters seem shapeless and generic, even for the comics. Still, the special effects are very good, and kids all around me seemed to be having a good time.

The scenery, costumes, and special effects in the play, Spiderman Turn Off the Dark, are fantastic - some of the best on Broadway. The music is interesting and vibrant, but there isn't one memorable song. The plot, which follows the comic book for the most part, needs to be better developed and fine-tuned to hold the audience' attention. The play is very slow in parts and could easily be shortened by a half an hour with no loss to the story line.

We loved the show, but 1.It does need to be shorter - tightened and some scenes eliminated 2. the acoustics need to be toned down - it is hard to decipher what is being said. 3. it would help if the dialogue flashed across a screen so the performers don't have to shout 4. The technical aspects were over the top, amazing

I thought the sets were amazing and the stunts were great; but the music was irritating. I left the theater with a headache. It was not only loud but it was not melodic or "catchy". There was a lot of emphasis on the flying and the sets but not much on the story and the development of the characters.

My partner and I went to see the show with bated breath ... and this is basically the review ... convoluted story - way too many ideas and not enough grit ... weak writing on top of it ... with a laughable ending ... acting unseasoned ... (except for Green Goblin and minor characters who played multiple rolls) ... someone really needed to reel Ms. Taymor in (and I'm a Massive fan) ... and the music just seemed - and it PAINS me to say it ... just wrong. Some nice songs - but - they just didn't seem to fit ... pretty much a mess .. On a positive note - aerials were nothing short of amazing. Probably will never see anything like that again for obvious reasons ... but it can't be the only reason you see a show. Ms Taymor pushes boundries in the theater and thinks outside the box. That's what makes her so extrraordinary. But sadly with Spiderman - she's off ... way off. The best seats are center front mezzanine.

I visited the Foxwoods Theatre on Fri 8th November with my wife, as we were visiting NY for the first time from the UK. The show was fantastic! Superb performances, with a unique audience interaction with the high wire movements covering all areas of the theatre. It brought my child hood memories of watching Spider man on TV to life, with a combination of Great singing, Superb costumes and Comic Book sets. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend anyone visiting New York to pick up this show! 10/10

I had read a lot of reviews that were not good, so, I kept my expectations low. To my surprise the show was terrific. I don't know what everyone was complaining about. I took two young boys age 7...they absolutely loved it. We had seats in the orchestra landing zone. I totally recommend these seats. Spiderman landed right in front of them and gave them a high 5! After the show the boys received bookbags too. My daughter and her husband went and they enjoyed it. The actor who played the lead role, was not the regularly scheduled performer. He was so good! It was his debut and he received a standing ovation! His name is Jason Gotay. I am so glad we got to see him play the role of Peter Parker. He was so gracious after the show...came outside and signed autographs and posed for pictures. Such a delight!

we had purchased 3 tickets as part of an AMEX promotion which included behind the scenes tour after the show. The seats were incredible. 3rd row middle. We got to see the performers up close and get webbing all over us. The flying over head was amazing. The Goblin was incredible with his performance. After the show we got to go behind the scenes with Jenny the stage manager. She was very interesting explaining what occurs during the show with cues and how the flying is performed and answering our questions. We were allowed to take pictures of the various areas. The Orchestra is split in 2 rooms. Make up room. Prop room and the mechanical devices. Very interesting. We enjoyed the whole experience. This show was incredible and would very much want to see it again.

I had read reviews that said this show was not that good. With trepidation, I bought tickets for myself and my 16-year-old daughter. We both laughed and cringed the whole show! It truly is a spectacular show with its high-flying acrobatics, that was the cringing part. The story line was true to what I had seen and the dancing was fun to watch. The songs were a little on the bizarre-side for me but my daughter felt it went along well with the story. I really liked the Green Goblin's character! He was so funny, a really likeable villain! Parts were silly, but I think the idea was to bring the cartoons/ comic book charcters to life. All-in-all, I was truly entertained and was happy to take part in the standing ovation!! Goes to show, that you really can't always go with other people's comments- just go see it for yourself!!

I was really looking forward to this play, but unfortunately it did nothing for me. My son's are 24 and 16 and they were not impressed either. The storyline was flat and did not offer anything unique to capture my interest. And although I am a fan of U2's music, the lyrics were rather lame. And finally, if that was not bad enough, "Spider-Man" had a terrible voice that did not blend well with the female lead's voice, who actually had a good voice. Nevertheless, if you are a grandparent taking your grandchildren of say 14 years and younger I think you will enjoy it, as some of the stage effects are awesome and it's always fun to see a superhero zoom around in the air! Everyone else should stay home, watch the movie on blue-ray and save your cash for the next best thing to hit Broadway.

When I see a musical, I want to be WOWed. When it came to spiderman, I was WOWed, but only at the flying. Patrick Page and Reeve Carney were great! However, when Reeve Carney sang his upbeat songs, it sounded like he was off his music and he and the rest of the cast was just winging it. Patrick Page was also very good! but again, I wasn't WOWed at their singing. I, personally, think the actors microphone volume was too high and the volume for the instruments were too low. The flying was great and I would definitely pay again to see it. Perhaps I went on a not so good day. But TAKE YOUR KIDS! they will be amazed at this show. oh and lastly, i gotta give it to the choreographers... they movement, dancing, and fighting was superb!

My wife and I saw Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark on July 3, 2012. Luckily, we bought tickets on the front row of the first balcony. Right in front of us -- 3 feet away -- was a small landing platform. Three times during the musical, Spider-Man landed on the platform after swinging around the theater. We were truly amazed. The play itself has GREAT music, wonderful singing performances, and the Green Goblin is surprisingly funny. There are some holes in the second act -- the Sinister Six seemed superfluous and shallow, and there was too much reliance the second act on animation. But the final battle with Spidey and the Goblin was fantastic, flying around the theater, clashing and fighting. I couldn't stop thinking about it for the next 24 or 48 hours. I highly recommend this musical.

Beyond my expectations. Special effects in movies are easily dismissed as low budget effects but a stage show that has stunts that rival the best cgi or best physical stunt work that gets take after take. This show is unbeatable. If you can afford it for the kids, get seats in the first level balcony next to the landing platforms on either side. Your kids will love it. They'll get an up close meeting with the wall-crawler. We got those seats for our boys and we got the cheaper ones 3-4 rows back but loved the whole thing and enjoyed it being back there. Don't miss this if you are in the big apple. You won't regret it.

The show is worth seeing for the theater lover and people who love a spectacle. I cannot critizice, this was my first broadway show. I took my 4 year old son to see his favorite super hero. If you never been to the fox wood theater, you can have great seats no matter where you sit. We were very close to the stage. When I was watching the show I was thinking about the first Spiderman movie, dont expect it to follow the movie, this play kind of goes its own direction but not bad. My son liked all the spider man scenes. You will see spiderman soar through the theater. Going to the second and third balcony. There was one technical difficulty at the end when spiderman is facing the goblin and they are flying around the theater. Not sure what went wrong but they had to stop the play I guess a prop did not go off. but it took only a few minutes to fix. The actor that played the Goblin was great.

Simply awesome. A birthday gift for my wife. She left the Theater so amazed and entertained. A top notch musical, The singing was phenomenal. Arachne - Played by Christina Sajous, is simply mesmerizing but Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Patrick Page) steals the show. Now for the Kool part. I was completely floored by Spider-Mans ability to swing around the theater. I now understand why it took so long for the show to open to the public. Not only were the swings very difficult but the landings were done flawlessly and with ease. My 10 year old was completely mesmerized by spider-man. He said his favorite part was watching Peter Parker bouncing on the walls and ceiling of his bedroom when he first discovered his spider powers. The musical score by U2 is powerful and completely fills the Foxwoods theatre as if you were present at one of their concerts. "Rise Above" performed by Peter Parker, Arachne and the Ensemble is powerful and completely captures the story line. If Spider-Man was a favorite hero of yours growing up, then this show is a must see for the kid in all of us.

Attended with my 6yr old (his 1st Broadway show). While he was a little restless when there were scenes with just Spidey and MJ, he was very alert and excited with all of the action scenes of course! FYI, they have booster cushions for the smaller kids. I saw a lot of small kids trying to stretch their necks to see. Just ask and you will be directed to the cushions! We will see this show again!

I was really looking forward to this, I'd read the bad reviews and wanted to prove them wrong, but I couldn't. I've seen stage shows and musicals all over the world, London, broadway, LA, Vegas.... A lot of shows in a lot of places and this was by far the worse. It felt unfinished, like they had rushed the release to claw back some of the millions it cost to put together. The first scene was great, I thought if the rest of the production is like this then we are in for a treat, but that was it. The singing was dreadful, the harmonies were cringeworthy and 50% off the time when more than two of the cast were singing you couldnt even understand what was being sung. The special effects were non existent, wow a single flying person, have the production team not seen some of the cirque du soleil shows? Far more technically challenging. They also had to halt the performance at one point due to a technical error and it was obvious that other parts of the performance were missing, at one point a group were on stage singing, well trying too and pointing into the sky, but there was nothing there, it was obvious spidey should have been swinging around the auditorium. I'm sorry, but this was a poor performance from what seemed like a poorly produced musical. I just could not see where the tens of millions had been spent putting this together! Do yourselves a favour and spend your money on any other show on broadway but not this.

Expected lot more......the props looked cheap. looks like not a lot of money was invested into this one. I guess im comparing this to ones like Wicked & Lion King. The stunts were good though.

As avid fans of the Marvel comic book world and as musical enthusiasts, we had high expectations regarding this production. And it proved to be everything we had hoped for and more. We warmly recommend this unique experience to all theater-goers or anyone interested in seeing a funny and adventurous musical journey about one of the greatest superheroes of our time. We have been to many Broadway hit musicals before, such as the Phantom of the Opera, Chicago and our all-time favorite, the Lion King. So naturally this new musical was a must-see for us. And of course, New York is the one and only place in the world where the viewer can really expect Spidey to swing from around the corner. The Foxwoods Theatre provides an epic setting for this story that takes place both on stage and above the crowd. You really get a sense of being part of the show, it's not happening just on stage but all around you. And oh boy, the swinging is truly awesome! Our many thanks go to the daredevilish (pun intended!) stuntmen, who risked their lives for our entertainment. The plot of the musical shortly tells Spider-Man's origin story with slight alterations such as the hero's mythical connection to "a spider-god-like" Arachne. And now a warning to all comic book geeks: this adaptation has taken liberties with the story and re-written many of the character backgrounds. Many scenes also follow the movies by Sam Raimi rather than the original comic books. However, this didn't bother our viewing experience at all. This is a musical, so let's talk about the music. The classic themes of a boy growing to be a hero and love larger than life provide excellent ground for memorable songs. All music is good, different from what Broadway usually offers, but good. On the way home we were all humming the catchy melodies, especially "Rise Above", "DIY World" and the heroic instrumental theme for Spider-Man. The songs work on stage when you hear them for the first time, but they get even better when listened to over and over again at home. Too bad the CD doesn't include all the songs, but it is a good buy anyhow. At first we thought that it was a bit weird to have Peter Parker, the nerd of all nerds, singing like a rock star. But after a short while, it became obvious that Reeve Carney and his distinct sound and singing voice are perfect for the role. Rebecca Faulkenberry portrays the character of Mary Jane Watson well, and she has a great voice, too. The most touching song is sung by MJ to Peter when the two share a romantic moment above the skyline ("If the World Should End"). Broadway veteran Patrick Page is an extremely charismatic performer and his take on the classic bad guy, the Green Goblin, is fresh and entertaining. The main villain succeeds in being simultaneously scary, weird, crazy and dead funny. The Green Goblin rocked the stage whenever he showed his pretty green face there. Our main villain had some totally hilarious moments, for example when he tries to call to the Daily Bugle to threaten Spider-Man's loved ones, but instead of succeeding in this evil deed, Mr. Goblin is kindly asked to wait on hold while listening to some awful waiting music. The fact that the story has been written and then written some more during the production shows in some parts, for example in the character of Arachne. She was originally designed to be a lead role, but the character had to face some cuts. She now hangs (quite literally) there to sing a few songs and to represent Peter's inner struggle and worries. Arachne does bring musical depth to the show, since her songs are quite different from the otherwise rock'n roll colored soundtrack. Plus, Christina Sajous is a killer artist, so while her being on stage is story-wise quite pointless, she adds a nice element to the musical as a whole. The show is visually stunning and ambitious. The choreographies and the flying parts are breathtaking and well executed. The action is really there and very true to the spirit of the comic books. The sets, too, are clearly inspired by the style used in comic books and they are often over-the-top and funny. But you shouldn't let the cartoony imagery fool you into thinking that the musical is suitable for young children. There were a lot of kids in our performance, many of them very young, and we think that this musical may have been a little too scary for some of them. Finally, we'd like to say that we had a lot of fun and totally enjoyed the show. The atmosphere in the theatre was awesome and everyone around us seemed to have a great time. We hope that Spider-Man will run for many years so that we can go watch it again. And wouldn't it be spectacular if they made this into a movie, too? A movie based on a musical, based on a movie, based on a comic book... That's what I call the circle of life! :)

Spellbinding. The sets, the lights, the sound, the music, the costuming, the special effects - it was all well done. If there was a Tony for Special effects, this musical would win hands down. The skill of the aerial flying and acrobatics and encompassing the entire theatre as being part of the set was amazing. Made the view not feel like merely a spectator but a participant in the show. Really enjoyed the music and the guitar work as quite distinctive Edge sound. Really enjoyed all the spidermen popping out everywhere and there were even more than I thought when I found the total number at the bows. It is so eye catching and so action packed and so new to the theatre world of so many special effects that it kept me mesmerized. My only comment would be for the writers to refer to Spamalot and give the leading lady a solo song. MJ needs a song that is just her own for I was left with the feeling of "what about my part? what about my song" for her. I loved the costuming and sets and in particular when they had that comic book graphic quality to them like the bad guys as drawn line figures and sets and rooms as drawn like quality. It was faithful to the Marvel comic, yet new and now. It was completely new music yet with a slight rock edge and deserving of a Tony. The aerial spinning and jumping and illusion of perspective of set and tilted planes was magnificent and it must be seen by all. Bravo U2, Bravo cast of Spider Man. Well done. Standing ovation well deserved by all. This show is going to be around for awhile. It is spectacular.

After all of the problems this show has had since opening on Broadway, I'm SO glad they finally worked it all out. The high flying acts were fabulous to say the least. It was not only an event that kids can enjoy but the adults who actually grew up with the real comic books can appreciate what the artist was trying convey. It had the look and feel of it! WOW! It's definitely worth the pricey ticket. I bought a CD and a t-shirt afterwards so I can remember what a wonderful time I had!

First, I could see that the actors were doing what they could with what they were given: cliche-ish script, canned lyrics, overly aggressive music. The flying was tepid at best. I will agree that the sets were... colorful. The story sequence was ridiculous. It was less focused than a two-headed, monster with six eyes on each head. One moment Parker is bitten. The next scene he is on the ceiling in his bedroom. Too much was crammed into one production. The dancers were about as tight as a wet paper bag of marbles. Oh, and the first fighting scene with the giant blow-up doll? Yes! Really! And it was manipulated the way you would do it at home playing with your kid. You stand behind it to support and manipulate it. No! Really! I will keep this short, as others have ripped this thing apart. What irks me is that great plays like Cats, Les Miserables, The Lion King and others are being compared to this theatrical fraud by other reviewers. That would be like comparing Mother Theresa to Madonna. I have attended plays on Broadway since 1978. This was my first total disappointment. And of course there are the demeaning swipes at those who hold a different political view than the writers and/or actors. I will end with wisdom overheard from a ten-year-old boy sitting in front of us: "Mom, this is stupid. We should leave!" Don't leave during intermission. Just don't go. In fact, if you must throw away money, feel free to deposit it in my Paypal account. I will take good care of it. I promise. You've been warned!

If Broadway is there to entertain people, then Spider-man Turn Off the Dark will not only ENTERTAIN you with its fantastic quirky characters (like the Green Goblin and the Sinister Six), colorful background sets and the most enthralling musical score possible written by two of the today's biggest rock stars it will also ASTOUND you with its high-flying scenes as Spider-man flys over the audience in the Foxwoods Theater & fights the Green Goblin in a sort of cirque du soleil fashion. NO OTHER BROADWAY SHOW CAN THRILL YOU THE WAY THAT SPIDER-MAN CAN!

My husband and I were in NYC celebrating our 16 year wedding anniversary. We booked these tickets ahead of time and were very pleased with the show except there was too much of the character, Arachne, the metaphysical spider being. We would have enjoyed it much more with seeing her only once not the multiple times they had her appear. We talked later and this is where the show would have lost our kids. It is too introspective and long, long, long. Other than that, Spiderman, the Green Goblin and MJ were wonderful. A fun production.

For my 2nd time seeing a Broadway show this was absolutely worth the money the stunts were on Que and the singing was top notch as well, Reeve Carney was great as Peter and the role of Mary Jane by Jennifer Dimiano was simple well done and in fine voice, the role of Norman Osbourne/Green goblin was very riveting and the flight/fight scene was very well done and breath-taking, the role of J.J. Jameson was also done very well and right in the belief from the TV show, all in all it was a excellent show and would recommend to all who ventures on 42nd and Broadway.

The web-slinging acrobatics over the orchestra were awesome, the skyscraper sets were fantastic, and the music was great. The show evoked the comic books wonderfully, far more than the movies did. Jennifer Damiano has a great voice and was terrific. Reeve Carney was a personable Peter and brought nuance to the complex character. Patrick Page was a wicked Green Goblin/Osborn and a delight. (I wish his "I'll take Manhattan" number was longer!) Michael Mulheren and Isabel Keating were top-notch in their roles -- the depth of the cast is impressive. TV Carpio as Arachne brings a taste of Cirque du Soleil to the show as well. The scene with Spider-Man fighting crime was outstanding: showing Spider-Man darting from every corner of the stage and in the orchestra seats, swinging in, crawling, jumping out in a quick-cut-like sequence--very exciting. The story is well-paced and engrossing. The audience was on its feet cheering at its end.

Spiderman:Turn off the Dark was terific! The flying was absolutely spectacular. Yes, the music was truly identifiable as Bono, but it was well suited for the show. Loved the music. the comic book stylized sets, staging, special effects...awesome! Very talented cast...vocally, acting, etc. It did seem to drag a bit in a couple of parts, but overall it was a fun, exciting night at the theater. Will do it again!

"Spiderman, Turn Off the Dark" is a fun show, suitable for ages 10-100. Although it is done in a very "cartoony" way, it will appeal to people of all ages, but not for children 9 and younger who will be scared by the size and sound of the action. We sat 3rd row, center, so we had a very intimate feeling from the actors. But our proximity did us no good for the fire escape seen (which we missed entirely due to sight lines) and many of the flying scenes. First row, mezzanine or first row balcony would probably be the best seats, overall. The script, songs and acting were uniformly professional and dynamic. I think you need time to listen to the music to appreciate its value and complexity. It sounds like U2 through a Broadway filter. Julie Taymor's stamp can be seen throughout the show from the spectacular set visions to the masks to the flying.

I thought it was a magnificent trifecta. The greatest band in the world plus one of the most beloved superheroes in comic book legend presented as a comic book rock opera on Broadway should have created a multimedia blitzkrieg of monumental proportions. When Bono and the Edge of U2 announced a few years ago that they were producing a Spiderman musical for Broadway I thought, They are going to do it again. U2 is launching out into unknown waters as they continue to conquer pop culture. Little did anyone know that the trifecta was really a perfect storm. In November of last year I bought tickets to see the preview of Spiderman on Broadway. That performance was the first of many to be cancelled over the next few months. Early audience feedback was caustic. Critics hated the music and the story. And though the production was visually stunning, the stunts were rife with accidents that sent a few cast members to the ER with serious injuries. And as the delays backed up the cost accelerated. As of this week the production has cost over $75 million. My friend Jason saw this early version and he was ready to POW, BANG, KABLOOWEE all who were involved. He called the musical a waste of money, time and an embarrassment to Stan Lee, U2 and highbrow sissies who go to musicals. The production was shut down until March of 2011 to work out kinks the size of the Hulk. After a new director, re-written story and updated songs, Spiderman was ready to fly again. So this week, while in NYC, and against my better judgment, I went to see Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark. I must first establish my credibility for this review: A) I am a huge U2 fan. I own 22 U2 albums (many special releases and rare finds). I have been to several U2 concerts including the PopMart, Elevation, Vertigo and 360 Tours. And I am a card carrying member of the U2 Fan Club. B) I am a huge comic fan, specifically Marvel. I own a collection of comics close to $5000 in value and I own a $2000 comic table to keep them safely stored. Uber-nerd is a badge I wear proudly. C) And though I am no highbrow sissy, I love Broadway musicals. I have been to numerous musicals over the last twenty years such as Phantom, Sweeny Todd, How to Succeed in Business, Camelot, and Les Miserables (by far my favorite) So allow me to tackle this from three perspectives. A) As a U2 fan I am not impressed. Outside of a couple of decent tunes (an a couple of horrible songs) there was not much U2ishness to the production. There are riffs that remind you of the Edge and but lyrically it was blasé at best. (And to placate the U2 fans, the disco scene has Vertigo playing) So U2 fans, sorry. Not worth it for you. B) As a comic fan, the story was a typical adaptation of the Spiderman myth. But the story revolves around the action rather than the story; razzamatazz rather than character development. J. Jonah Jameson is spot on. Spiderman and Mary Jane are fairly accurate. But the Green Goblin is more like the Joker and attempts to steal the show much to my chagrin. This becomes a mutant take rather than a Spiderman tale. The musical is wasted on the Sinister Six villains created by the Goblin. As far as comics, this is aimed at Elementary school children. Not a lot of depth. Attempted comedy. Lights and big bangs. Spiderman is really a Six Flag 4-D ride, just A LOT more expensive. Visually, they did well at presenting a comic world feel in the production. And the action scenes are well done. But the worst sin is adding the Greek goddess Arachne as the source of Peter Parker s transformation. Yes, he is bitten by a radioactive spider but the goddess is what motivates him to be a crime fighter. Lame and unforgiveable in the Spiderman mythology. C) As a musical, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark is a musical aimed at families, especially young children. For that reason it is passable. But in a city filled with great Broadway productions, STOD falls firmly at the bottom. Still, if I had young children I d probably take them to see it as long as we sat in the flying section. The flying section is where all the highflying action comes in and this is where STOD shines. My head spun as Spiderman and the Green Goblin flew around the whole theater, stage to balconies, and swirling overhead, as easy as a flying monkey. My heart beat faster during those stunts. At one point I thought Spiderman fell into the crowd. But it was part of the show. Taking Cirque du Soleil to new heights, Spiderman soars in the action realm. Again, kids will be awed. So here is where I stand. If you a U2 fan skip it. If you are a Spiderman fan you may enjoy the adaptation. If you re a seven year old boy you will love it. And as far as musicals go, it may be worth seeing the aerial acrobatics but if I were you, take in Cirque du Soleil instead. As I hailed a cab after the show I did not feel like punching Bono in the face or slashing the Edge s tires. I just walked away with the cold hard realization that maybe they need to stick to the world of music. Entering the cab I shuttered suddenly remembering the Million Dollar Hotel\u2026
