The Moth (Detroit)

It is always a wonderful experience to share stories from our lives. Two of the stories were really profound and amazing. The other three stories were just about the crazy things we go through and might experience as humans.

I would give the show an overall rating of 2. I found the stories at times hard to follow. The MC was very loud; it was almost as if she was screaming at the audience.

Great stories in a cool venue. With so many live entertainment options and a limited budget, I can't see myself rushing to the box office every time they come to town, but I will definitely be back.

Although this year's event paled by comparison to last year's, it was still worth the ticket price. That's how MOTH works: it's always interesting, but it's always a crapshoot, because on any given night, the storytellers may or may not "bring it". The best of the night for touching the audience was the incomparable Grace Lee Boggs, all 4 feet something and 97 years of her. When someone lives that long and is still coherent and capable of well timed humor, it is a blessing to listen to their wisdom and wit. The best of the remaining 4 storytellers was OT, who spoke about his years in prison, which strangely enough was the funniest 5 minutes of the evening. This guy should be on Comedy Central. The opener was good, a MOTH host who told a tale worthy of an Indiana Jones film, but the 2 young women who ended the show were obviously novices at storytelling, and both need to tweak their tales in order to convey a point or theme, and both need to work on their delivery and timing. They were okay, but not really ready for the primetime of MOTH Mainstage- yet.
