Beats Antique

Beats Antique

Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area’s wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio’s story takes them back to a mysterious world. When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory.

Beats Antique is musically so tight. The artistic display was phenomenal! Dancers had an incredible amount of stage presence! Really a transformative experience. The venue was clean and the bartenders were attentive. I would see them at that venue repeatedly.

Our friend was selected as the volunteer! My wife and I met Zoe and Emancipator! Zoe attacked me with the last of the ice cream! Shpongle was a real mind melting experience, as always. Emancipator killed it! Great people, great venue, great time.

Had a lot of fun at this show. I was not familiar with the opening acts but I really enjoyed their music and will be listening to them more often . Beats Antique's performance was amazing. The visuals were very trippy and I enjoyed the belly dancer. This was my first time seeing them live. I can't wait for them to come back to Columbus.

I have seen them 3 times now since August. This was at least as good as Sea of Dreams NYE. So good it is hard to describe the fun I had. Go as many times to see them as you can, before they blow up and start hitting stadiums.

Beats Antique was GREAT. Unfortunately Zoe was ill or injured and couldn't perform with Beats. I admit I'm a belly dance addict and primarily came to watch Zoe the dance goddess!!!!!!!!!! So sad. Beats was wonderful and as an unexpected BONUS was Lynx!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm her new fan and was glad I went to the show so I could get her CD which I was told would be unavailable elsewhere. So, all in all it was a GREAT NIGHT! yip!yip! As for seating...there is no seating in the Hell section at Masquerade. It is a neat venue though. BE FORWARNED only two stalls in a very cramped ladies restroom..so typical!

Another great show for Beats Antique...i've been following them around for about 4 years now, i discovered them about 5 years ago and their shows are always great entertainment, the music is like no other. If you like 'different' and a good energy vibe from the crowd, where anything goes...this is a show you don't want to miss. There music is like no other!

I have wanted to catch a Beats Antique show for awhile and sooooo glad I finally did. Even better in person, especially Zoe's dancing! Also, they other artists were just as good, especially LYNX!!! The Music Box was a great setup for this type of show, too. Great night and way to celebrate Halloween!

The only reason Beats Antique didn't get 5 stars from me is that Zoe Jakes was unable to perform. That was a big disappointment, but the rest of the group almost made up for her absence through their wonderful music. Their tunes relax the mind and stimulate the body at the same time. It was clear that the entire audience was into the performance in a major way. The warm-up groups were great too. The young lady on the drums had a great presentation. Also, Awalim Tribal Belly Dance Company is truly a visual gift to any audience. They are great performers. Their dance skills and their costumes bring out the best in any show.

Awesome set list, amazing music. It was a supreme bummer that Zoe Jakes was too sick to perform, but Satori and Cappell definitely held it down aurally. I didn't stop dancing the whole show.

Beats Antique was brilliant! We missed seeing/hearing the enigmatic Ms. Jakes, who was under the weather, but the music was so awesome that we soon were just busy sending her healing love. Lynx was a truly awesome opener (new fan here!), and Awalim rocked the house with their dance. Definitely would go again!

This would have been an even more phenomenal show if Zoe had been there, but Lynx played and amazing opener and three great songs with Beats Antique. For a Sunday night after a 7 day run, these guys really cranked up the overdrive and powered through an amazing performance! Also, the crowd at the Masq was more mature and considerate than can be said for most shows at the Masq.

This was by far one of the best shows I've ever been to in my 30 years of existence on this planet Earth! OH...MY...GOSH! Everything and everyone was amazing, the crowd and performers alike! So much energy, so much talent, so much color, such creative sets, skits, and costumes, and the music!! I'm just speechless. Will definitely be going to another Beats Antique show whenever they come back to LA. Emancipator, Lafa Taylor, Bubble Gutter, Sphongle, and Paper Diamond killed it too! So happy I didn't miss this show :D

Beats Antique has really stepped it up in recent years. Their show was great. Shrine expo hall was awesome and after the show my boyfriend and I walked around USC campus a bit. I find Emancipator a little boring though and when I first bought the tickets I thought it was going to be Shpongle, not a DJ set, so I'm giving a 4.

I am quite a fan of the music as I love the ethnic inspired beats and the crafty way they are infused in to the tunes. HOWEVER I was amazed as the show unfolded and each piece could have been a stand alone performance. We experienced beat box. Ethnic style drumming, burlesque, spectacle, comraderie, too much to describe and do justice to this AMAZING troupe.

Seeing the Creature Carnival performance by Beats Antique in one of my favorite cities, Asheville, was the best experience I have been to in many years. I was able to see Beats Antique at Harvest Fest in 2013 but sadly their set was only 45mins long. Then they came to Memphis in May Beale Street Music Fest in May 2014 and I lost my ticket so I wasnt able to go. So seeing them in my favorite city with some awesome people the day before halloween was the best thing I couldve asked for.

This show had immeasurable potential with three very well known and quality artists. The opening set was by Shpongle, however I do not feel I have been Shpongled whatsoever. This was quite disappointing for me. I've heard about Shpongle's shows where he has a whole stage performance to go along with his music, which could perhaps "alter dimensions," so I've heard. Him just standing with his laptop dancing around was not impressive. Emancipator was great. Beats Antique was pretty good as well. Although I was not entirely ready for the "circus carnival" theme. That's my fault though for not paying attention to the shows name, "Creature Carnival."

The opening acts were amazing! I knew they would be. I've seen Shpongle and Emancipator many times before. Beats Antique has always tried to spice their music up though by focusing on their front woman. I get it. She's kinda cute, but I came for the music. All and all great show, just a little disappointed with the headliner.

Loved Beats Antique, but didn't really care for the accompanying performers. The MC with his beat boxing was lame. I saw Beats Antique at Leaf and felt their show was better and more creative there. The light show didn't measure up to the previous performance. It may have been because of the size of the venue. Possibly would have been better performance say at the Orange Peel.

I have seen both of the head-liner bands before and came to the show expecting something new and exciting. Instead I got the same old DJ set routine from Simon and a pretty average performance from Beats Antique. Simon with such a creative discography proves he is more of a great producer then a performer. Beats Antique on the other hand have a very good stage show but lack any kind of memorable and distinct songs. The best part of this event was to come out to see the 'scene' kids as that was the most interesting thing going on at the show.

Just simply phenomenal. Great environment, really decorated the venue well to represent the creature carnival theme. They are so incredibly talented and it shows in every moment the band plucks their strings, bang their drums and give the audience the most fiercest facial and dance moves we could imagine. I love Beats Antique and I love the Filmore! I have to remember to stand up and away from the crowd because I really enjoy watching them, especially Zoe's choreography. I was on the floor over near the right side of the stage, and when Zoe came out, I was up on my tippy toes, with my elbows out. People kept trying to get by. And one girl said that to me, "I'm just trying to get by. I responded, "I'm just trying to watch!":) note to self...... Beats come to Denver around my b- day a lot, so this was the 2nd birthday I celebrated with Beats Antique!

I am a HUGE fan of Beats Antique. I've seen them live at least 5 times. And for this show, I dragged 12 friends with me, because I've raved about them for so long. And as always, Beats Antique delivered the goods. HOWEVER...The Fungineers were so unbelievably and embarrassingly bad, I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. I seriously almost lost all credibility with our friends. I've seen opening acts for Beats Antique before that were also less than stellar. Is that part of the show? To throw people completely off kilter? If that's the case, keep it short and sweet. We thought the nightmare would never end. The act that went on before them (Alam Khan) were amazing. Would have been a perfect evening without The Fungineers. And I absolutely would have given 5 stars otherwise.

My date and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this show. Both warm up acts were fun (and different). The Beats Antique show as wonderful. Great lighting effects and a compelling experience all the way around. As is often the case, the Fillmore was too cold during the first couple hours until the crowd arrived. More like FREEZING!!! It warmed up for the Beats show....partly due to the jumping and dancing.

Friday night the usual suspects were gathering steam and momentum outside the Fox. No rush to get in- the warm ups were thin, unsophisticated single track electronica- no depth, no layers, no surprises, no juice. MC was uninspiring-irritating the crowd as a mix burners in their finery filed in. No club kids-yay! Everyone was seriiously down for the music! After the usual cruise around, where self conscious fabulous chicks in perfect playa cutouts, looking to be noticed by top hatted, tall skinny guys in shades and dusters took place-actually does it ever NOT take place-Beats hit the stage and they hit it just right! Zoey gets hotter with each concert- this was my 5th with them and her performances get more complex, more symbolic, more layered, and more exciting with each costume change! Her girls are equally hot, however one of the dancers- the blond beauty with the most perfect body of them all- was obviously not dialed into the routine. She was often out of sinc with the others and self conscious about her place and dance steps. When the reveal came-in each number she was sloppy, often showing her hands when they should have been hidden- making a spoiler out of the Tantric reveal. Meaning-this is a Tantric band if there ever was one- they are all about the mystery, the arousal and the reveal-ending each number on the up note- never on the down beat-they don't drop!! This blond hottie was the evening's tragedy for me because this band needs its performances to be calibrated perfectly so that we-the audience- are swept up in the rapture and ecstatic consciousness shift that their music is all about. She kept drawing attention to the fact that that this was a performance-by her her mistakes- preventing me from fully merging with the experience. I want the Tantric Reveal- when SHE is revealed-the Divine feminine in the unified field of Ah Ha- behind fans, feathers, drapery and illusion-because in true Tantra the layers must be peeled back- taking all the time necessary to do so. The moment is never as presented, always there is the truth behind the veil and I want to be surprised and swept up and taken there- a dancer who is out of step in any way invades what this process of illusion, surrender, penetration and reveal is actually about. My favorite number was when 3 dancers came out-making it look like it was Zoey alone, sitting on a throne-only to have the throne revealed as two other dancers! Zoey remained in the middle of this mythology in her goddess silver finery with antlers on her head- i wanted that dance to go on for at least another hour-sexy and dynamic- the divine and powerful feminine -like a true Amazon-dancing under the patronage of the goddess Diana-goddess of the hunt-embodied by Zoey and her maidens. Well kids- thats my take on it anyway! The band's beats continue to be layered, nuanced and their foundation is always supported by that cool cool cool middle eastern flow that they keep coming back to cover me over and over again. They brought out a top line up of guest artists-beats me if i know or remember who they were- but suffice it to say that each artist gave a unique and authentic performance of themselves-adding surprise, joy and excellent energy throughout the night. These guest artists added additional overlays to an already perfectly nuanced beat. The truth-for me-is that fabulous flavor they bring- of I HAVE to move to this and surrender to it- I HAVE to be ravished by it over and over and over, even as there are other experiences of jazz, dub, brass and string-always the foundation is the percussive and relentless penetration of the drums-here's the Tantra-I can relax-trusting that i will be taken care of-that always I will be saturated and permeated by exactly what i need and so-blondie, hottie not withstanding- and she will eventually catch up-This night was a true Rave in the best sense- where it was all perfect and perfectly shared in the unified field of musical, visual, vibrational Tantra! I LOVED it!!!!!

After seeing Beats Antique step up and fill the void left by Bassnectar's absence at Burning Man last year, I fell in love with this group. Even the simple dj set by these folks is a blast, although this full band performance at the Fox was nothing short of spectacular. It's pretty rare to say this about a concert with opening bands, but I loved the entire show from beginning to end! Thriftworks was a nice way to start with the mellow, trippy music, but when Too Many Zooz came on with their crazy act, they really got the crowd pumped up. Awesome event minus all the restrictions the Shrine places on what items guests can carry in to the show. Beats Antique is one of those rare performances you really have to experience to appreciate. Stage props, costumes and dance routines add so much to the auditory adventure that is a Beats Antique show. Bar and restroom lines were never an issue, and the large outdoor smoking area provided some great people watching entertainment. Parking was $20 and booze wasn't cheap, but that should be expected at a concert venue. Highly recommend Beats Antique at any venue really.

I love this group. But I did not enjoy the show this year as much as I did last year. Last year I saw them in a smaller venue. It was more intimate, more organic, more ARTY, and I felt enchanted and engaged. I could hear every nuance of the music and see all the visual treats. This show was more like a rave. It was fun and energetic and all, and if you like raves you'll love this show. But for me, the sound wasn't good, it was too muddy and bassy. It was hard to see. Zoe didn't dance as much, they didn't play till midnight. The large echoing venue made it lose something for me. A drugged out guy fell down and convulsed right next to me, which further dampened the experience. But I only removed one star, because I do love Beats Antique so much.

The music, show, venue, and everything in between made this an amazing event. If they're ever on tour in SoCal again, I'll definitely be making the trip out to see them!

Maybe it was because they were recording for a live album and filming for a DVD, but this was an amazing show, really over the top. I couldn't believe the size of this production, really well executed. Beats Antique sounds so much better in person than their recorded stuff. Such a big sound that has to be heard to be believed. See them if you ever get the chance, you won't be disappointed.

The Beats antique show was good, but the order of songs created a disconnect. Meaning one song would be upbeat and danceable, then the next slow, then repeat. It felt like there wasn't build up of momentum, just wishy washy fast and slow. The Belly dancing was pretty good, but the choreography & stage execution was a little amateur. The ending Hip Hop booty shaking somewhat cheapened the artistic level of the overall show because it was like a sloppy talent show bit. The artistic talent seen in their music videos was not carried over to the live show, (i.e. background art or moving pieces aside from the belly dancers props). My critique might be harsh, but I still really enjoyed the show, I just felt it could be greatly improved to match the mystical antiquity of their music.

The show opened up with an eclectic combination of two bands working together: Inspector Gadget (pronounced gah-jay) & the Llyod Family Players. Inspector Gadget is an all-brass and horn band and the Lloyd Family Players are an all-drum band. And together they played a mish-mash of songs varying from Dixieland to Flamenco. These two bands working together created a delightful and bouncy atmosphere that got the audience up and dancing. The second act was a duo whose name escapes me, mostly because the performance was anything but memorable. The gentleman DJed with a variety of instruments beyond his turntables and samples, and the lady played the cello. All the while, a series of images were played on a screen at the base of his turntables. At first the combination of these two styles was hauntingly beautiful. But his playing dominated the performance, slowly pushing her further and further into the background. And by the end of the act, she disappeared from the stage leaving him to play techno music in a "been-there, done-that" finale that left the whole thing feeling very flat. But fortunately, the main attraction was up next, and Beats Antique saved the day! Sidecar Tommy stuck to his drum-kit this time, a departure from past events where has played a myriad of instruments. This is not a complaint, though because Tommy's layered drumbeats are truly infectious. But Dave Satori seems to have picked up the slack, grabbing instruments and playing them all with striking mastery, though his most beautiful melodies come out when he picks up the violin. But the main attraction is always the amazing body-manipulations of belly-dancer/drummer/co-songwriter Zoe Jakes. This year, her students were given the chance to shine as well, each getting an opportunity to perform in pairs or in the solo spotlight. But when Zoe takes the stage, her charisma is so over-powering that all eyes are always drawn to her. One of her dancers in particular shocked the audience. She was brought out hidden by a large white veil. A bright spotlight backlit her while she danced. During the song's crescendo, the veil was dropped revealing that she is eight months pregnant. For me, however, the show-stopping number of this year's show was also the show-stopping number of last-year's show. "Revival," in which Zoe is wearing a headdress of antlers and is attached to two fellow dancers by delicate gold chains. The two dancers hold giant feather-fans while Zoe performs a beautiful dance that evokes gentle beauty, sinister surprise, and erotic temptation. Throughout the show, the dance performances varied from simple, elegant solo-dances to little story-vignettes. All of this culminated in a dazzling drum-performance with Zoe and five of her dancers pounding away at stand-up drums in a synchronization that was more dance than instrumentation. If you missed this show, you did not necessarily miss out. It was recorded for their first live CD/DVD. Shows like this are a brief "one amazing moment in time" event.

Beats Antique once again put on an amazing, incredible, life changing event. Every time I have seen this band I find myself more inspired. The music is beautiful, playful at times, haunting at others, intricate and addicting. The dancing and interaction with the crowd is unbeatable. You are part of the performance and your breath is taken away. There is no experience like it. I would recommend this band a thousand times. Incredible.

I sat up in the balcony and the one thing that ultimately made me extremely dissatisfied was people's penchant to stand up and dance in their seats. I'm a tall guy so my standing up would not solve the problem for people behind me, but so many people insisted on disrespecting people who were unable to stand up. One girl asked the gentleman directly behind her if she was blocking, but did not consider any of the rows past that. The security should be a little bit more perceptive to self-righteous people's wants so they can be told to not be children and sit down for the good of all in attendance. This show was great because of the energy, but if you want to dance, leave your seat. I was not the only one aggravated at these careless people.

Got there a little late, but caught most of FIlastine's set. A true talent, his beats & mixes set the perfect tone for Beats Antique to come out & blow our minds. Zoe Jakes welcomed us into their set with a spinning mask dance which began the crowd's journey into a realm of fantasy. Despite a few breaks, each song called for new costumes & outlandishly awesome choreographies. There were 9 special belly dance guests to complement the 9 collaborating guest musicians from Brass Menazerie. They brought everything to the table, from traditional oriental dances to mermaids dancing on stools to a theatrical nutcracker-esque number complete with a hungry dragon. The encore blew the whole show out of the water when two female rappers came out & stole the stage with all the dancers in 80's style athletic wear & booty shorts reppin' their names. Between the crazy athleticism (doing the splits while balancing on their heads breakdance-style & continuing to pop their booty) & amazing showmanship, this was the best show I've ever been to hands down. It also had the best crowd, everyone was dancing & having the time of their lives. We were all so pumped by the end of the show, we couldn't help but take over the street in front of the theater & continue to dance till 2:30 in the morning. Beats Antique + Oakland = Bliss.

The opening act, Loyd Family Players, laid down a great gypsy marching band beat that had everyone jumping. They came out and joined the audience for their finale, awesome. Everyone should have a tuba player. Kind of a downbeat for second opening act. Beats Antique rocked the house, Zoe and the other dancers providing creative bellydancing to complement the music--some nice shadow dancing behind a sheet being held up by others, and some linked-together dancing. A few more dance numbers would have been nice. The sound was just the right amount of loud. The Fox is a great venue for shows like this. Apparently things got out of hand afterward outside--the fans need to ratchet it back if they want their bands to be welcomed back.

We were excited to see Beats Antique again since being introduced to their music at Outsidelands music fest where they put on a great show with fun staging. Sadly, we were disappointed in this next showing. Lackluster staging at this show, dancers who were more fan dancers than belly dancers and no lighting or interesting wardrobe on the musicians made for a dull show. We left early. Too bad as we were anticipating something more.

The Beats Antique proved to be a great live act (despite the large amount of production involved in their recordings). They played everything, and sounded just like themselves. The dancers were amazing in their own right. (There was a distraction in the middle of the show- a single gal playing a 2 chord song with terrible, repetitive lyrics. Apparently they were trying to give her a break into show business, that failed despite the Mermaids). The costuming of the dancers was inventive, those girls are in fantastic shape. Particularly Vira, who danced despite being 8 months pregnant. She displayed a beauty few can express. The final finale, a rap number with some guest singers was totally unnecessary and tainted the experience for me. The real finale was the entire audience singing along with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody as they left the theater. I have to compliment the venue. The Fox is amazing! the staff was totally together. The building was gorgeous, clean and a large part of this show being a great experience. I will be keeping an eye on who is playing and make a point of returning.
