Death Grips

Death Grips bring a punk rock fury to the usually laid back grooves of hip hop, create a chaotic and riveting stage show with their manic energy and wild-eyed stage presence. Rapper Stefan Burnett (AKA MC Ride) embodies the group’s take-no-prisoners mentality, assuming a relentless and shirtless persona that combines the best onstage characteristics of Iggy Pop and Eazy-E. Drummer Zach Hill unleashes unorthodox Gene Krupa-esque beats with an avant-garde bent and relentless drive. On top of his frantic and erratic movements, producer Andy Morin increases the foreboding fracas on stage by layering lo-fi synthesizers and off-kilter sound collages.

Death Grips was nothing less than a near death experience. Amazing energy by the crowd and performers. The sound kicked ass and nearly blew my ears out. For once I thought the floor was going to bust and everyone would probably get ducked into hell by the devil or something unearthly.

And it was incredible. My god. What a night. Truly unforgettable. As unsettling and remarkable as I could have imagined. If you have the opportunity to go to Death Grips and don't go, you should seriously reevaluate your life choices. One of the best nights in my entire life. They played for an hour and 45 minutes straight as MC Ride and his ripped bod jumped all over the stage scaring the crowd away by staring straight into their eyes as he screamed the lyrics, and Zach Hill just beat the drums like nothing I've ever seen. I was disappointed the MC Ride didn't take a Mac and break it on stage, but I suppose one can't have it all.

A one of a kind performance. Very angry, very fun. I don't think I ever laughed so hard when the show started and all these guys were escorting their girlfriends out of crowd. They had no ideawhat they were getting into.

This show was crazy. Death grips delivers a show that is so intense and chaotic. Non stop performance with little time in between each song. One exception was when Zach Hill tried opening a water bottle on his kit and got water on Andys equipment. Andy rushed to grab another computer while Ride somehow kept the adrenaline rush going by staring into the audience with a 1000 yard stare. They were back on in around 5 minutes and proceeded like nothing happened. The crowd was moving the entire time. The venue I was at had a 21+ balcony that I went to when they were almost finished. I got a better view of Hills drumming which was insane. They played a mix of Fashion Week and all of The ILYs first album before the show. This was by far the loudest show I've ever been too. So if you are going to be up front or near the speakers bring earplugs.

Death Grips live is an endurance test. From the moment MC Ride, Flatlander and Zach Hill took the stage the crowd began convulsing in claustrophobic pushing and shoving. Ride's stage presence is pure rage and adrenaline. He evokes primal chaos in the crowd. Everything becomes sweat, noise, jostling. When the crowd wasn't packed together so close that it moved as a fluid entity, there was jumping and thrashing. I was knocked over at one point and came home with some bruises in places I didn't realize I could get them. Do yourself a favor. Bathe in the red gel lights of the stage and choke on the fog pumping continuously from behind the monitors.

Great show. Once in a lifetime experience. This review is probably irrelevant because Death Grapes is splitting up. The area around the venue was kinda sketchy, lots of homeless people.

got there at 5:30 with my man Brendan; doors opened at 7, they had Fashion Week they started at 8:15. THE HEAVENS QUAKE. they did at least 2 songs from each album except for n***** on the moon, (which i think they should rename that album to "Apollo 11, a true story" ) and there EP. wanted them to play "thru the walls" but alas they did not. long story short, MC Ride was fire, Zach Hill was lit, and Flatlander looked like a dancing easter island head. would do again

MC Ride got on stage, took his shirt off, and played the hits for the whole show. They started with Inanimate Sensation and played another few of their latest songs but also played their most noided songs off The Money Store and Exmilitary. Definitely a night to vibrate higher.

I didn't die so that's a positive. Loved the metal detectors out front, really added a level of unexpected thrill to the tour.

Death Grips was amazing. My only real complaint is that they had a pretty limited set list. Overall, it was a really short show and they didn't get to some amazing songs when they definitely had time to. Still, everything played was incredible. I highly recommend this show to anyone who has the opportunity.

The review title pretty much sums it up. To anyone attending this tour, I would heartily recommend showing up for Death Grips only, as the opener was quite possibly the most tortuous barrage of mangled noise it has ever been my personal displeasure to hear. If you like hearing a pretentious hipster moan 50 times "Are you real, or assimilated?" to a stolen Depeche Mode beat (yes, he ripped off "Strangelove"!), then maybe dispense with my advice and flush away 45 minutes of your precious life. Hey, it's a free country. However, I was slightly offended that Death Grips thought it appropriate to trot out this joke of an opener considering this was not a cheap show, and frankly, if they had any hand in picking their opener, I'm disappointed in their exceedingly poor judgment and personal taste. I try to be fair when offering my critique, but the opener was seriously amateur hour. When your "music" is so irredeemably bad that you feel the need to call out the sound guy because the audience is noticeably disinterested in what you're peddling, perhaps you should take that as a hint that it's time to pack up your microphone and walk away gracefully.

Got there a little after 8 and the waiting began. Was there gonna be a show or was it not happening. Waiting and waiting impatience was growing, cigarettes were being smoked, and beers were being chugged. Finally the lights went down and electronic feedback was filling the entire room, Cities Aviv hit the stage and set the pace for the whole night. When Gavin jumped down and started dancing and rapping with the crowd that was when I knew this night was going to be good. Cities Aviv finished their set and it went great besides a little technical issues with the mic. Soon the room began filling with the fog machine and we all knew what was going to happen next. When Death Grips came out anyone who didn't know what they were about to listen to were probably in for a surprise as soon as the loud electronic beats accompanied with a thrashing drum set while lyrics were being screeched out of the microphone as fast as they could the words could be formed. The crowd was a thrashing ocean of arms and screaming faces. An hour long set was condensed into a 40 minute jam session it was like a reincarnation of the Ramones.
