The show was not a sell out so our seats were upgraded from the balcony to main level amazing seats! Little dialogue needed to drive the story, music does it on its own. Very unusual musical experience (in a positive way) which only Green Day can accomplish. Any Green Day fan would enjoy.

What an incredible show. When my son was eight years old, we took him to see Green Day's American Idiot tour. So, yes, eight years later there was a great deal of anxious anticipation for this show. We were NOT disappointed! In fact, we hope they make a movie so we can see it again and again! (This, unlike Les Mis, would actually work!) Bottom line: If you love this music, you will love seeing it brought to life in this show!

Good cast. Not as great as the broadway version from a few years back, but still a good show with non-equity cast.

Going to the theater is expensive, so most people need to choose carefully which shows to see. I love Green Day's music, so I was not going to miss American Idiot. I knew the songs wouldn't be exactly the same as on the album, but I was disappointed that so many of the songs sounded more like show tunes than the edgy and punkish originals. The story was tired and uninteresting. The flying sequence was fun, but not very meaningful. If you like show tunes, you might enjoy American Idiot, but I don't think it is worth going just because you like Green Day.

American Idiot is a non-stop flurry of entertainment! The raw stories combined with the visually stimulating set, rock choreography and an awesome score takes the audience on a journey through the lives of three friends. Green Day's anthems and ballads fit the story beautifully with minimal dialogue needed to tell the tale. Fantastic!

From the perspective of a huge Green Day fan, I have to say I was a little nervous when the musical kicked off. Wasn't sure if I was enjoying it as much as I hoped - then Jesus of Suburbia kicked in, the storyline started taking shape and I was hooked. The way they worked three simultaneous stories using the music and lyrics almost exclusively (almost no spoken words at all) was incredible. Music is pulled from American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. It was so seemless and made so much sense that I would have believed the music was written specifically for this show rather than the show to the music. Cast was very strong. Highly Recommended!

If you like Green Day, this show is for you. The play follows the story line of the album American Idiot very closely, with a few other songs from 21st Century Breakdown. Lively and exciting. The Oriental Theater is beautiful!!

American Idiot was a great staging of the Greenday album of the same name. The characters were well acted, and it was a little challenging to watch all three sections of the stage when different things were happening. The sound was clear without being booming. There were a few small problems with one lead's microphone, but overall, the effect was small. The choreography was interesting, and the lead playing Saint Jimmy was amazing. Overall a very good experience and worth the money.

I am not a regular theatre goer by any stretch, in fact at age 48 this is my first Broadway - type production. I'm a fan of the album and didn't really know what to expect as to how it would be adapted as a musical on stage. I was thoroughly impressed. The story line was great, The songs took twists and new meanings that were bold and original while staying true to the feel of the album and the audience it was intended for and reaching several new audiences. The acting and singing were spot on.There wasn't a member of the cast that I didn't like. The set and lighting were perfect for this show. I sat 22nd row dead center, great view, of course closer would have been better. They were $105 each and well worth it. If you're like me and have never seen this type of show but intriqued by the concept of a Green Day album as a musical, go see this show, you won't be disappointed

American Idiot is different. That being said, I thought it was great! It is not a traditional musical with a straightforward narrative. There is very little dialogue, as the show is carried by the music. I would highly recommend becoming at least a little familiar with the music before seeing the show. It will make the experience that much better! It is loud and real with powerful performances and moments.

I much anticipated to see this musical. I was very excited and in a nutshell, the show was good. I wouldnt say it was great, nor I would say it was awful. A few of the singers did not impress me ( specially "whatshername" performance was lacking and her voice was simply drown by the music ).

The Green Day musical American Idiot was well-conceived in terms of staging and having a live band play onstage. I also enjoyed the fact that many of the leads were also accomplished musicians. The biggest problem I had with the show was that I waited for songs that I knew and that I enjoyed, as well as sat for over an hour hoping to discover new songs that impressed me as well. While it is true that I discovered at least three new tunes that "blew me away." In the end, I was left confused and I soon realized that I did not even know the names of most of the characters and found it difficult to follow their storylines. As a rock opera, Green Day's American Idiot needs to take a page from The Who's Tommy in terms of brilliant music, staging, and character development. The cast was uniformly brilliant, the music was fantastic and the sound was amazing!! I give it 2.5 stars on a four point scale.

If rent had a child this would be it. Not your everyday broadway experience but an eclectic and abstract, avant garde experience more like a rock ballet or live music video. I loved every minute. Alex Nee is a tremendous talent. An amazing voice and incredible stage presence.

Went to this play with my son and his friend. None of us enjoyed it at all. The music was way too loud. They killed the songs to the point that we almost left half way thru the show. I certainly would not recommend this play to any of my friends. I was so upset when it was over that I had paid all that money and wasted the time there when we were celebrating my son's Birthday. We could've just gone to a movie and would of had a much better time.

First, let me admit that I am 35 years old and still a strong Green Day fan. But even if you are a casual fan, you will love this show. Not only is the cast extremely talented (between the acrobatics required for specific sequences to the intense fist pumping/head banging in practically every song, singing every song BETTER than Green Day and playing live instruments), but the show itself has a great story and doesn't let up for the entire 1.5 hours. The story was great and intertwines tracks from both American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, with a few b-sides thrown in for good measure. All are vital to the story and the story plays out very well, with strong female characters singing some of the important parts as well (an unexpected surprise). Overall a great show with an amazing cast - I would highly recommend this to a friend!

I purchased tickets to take my daughter to see this musical but I did not anticipate how truly unique and moving it would be. My daughter has not stopped talking about Green Day's American Idiot to her friends and has asked when we can go back to see it again. The most interesting part of taking my daughter to see this play: my daughter didn't really listen to Green Day (I am the Green Day fan) before seeing the play and now she is downloading the music on her phone and Kindle!

My teenage kids pushed us to see this show. I thought it was a great rock opera type, felt like seeing (or how I might have imagined seeing), The Who's Tommy, or Floyds Wall. It was great rock music, loud mostly, and had a message that was complicated, but good to see. Any teens or young adults who are interested, are thoughtful, good people, who like good music.

While I enjoyed the music, chorus and live band on stage, this musical is not destined to be a classic/must see. The lead performances were adequate but not impressive. The story line is hard to follow and definitely geared to the feelings of the type of youth that I neither was nor am. For even somewhat of a Green Day fan I would say, go check it out. If you have no interest in their music, save your bucks and go see a more mainstream show.

Admittedly, I chose this play because of the rave reviews it had received. I did not know what American Idiot was about nor was I familiar with Green Day. The morning of the play, one of my wife's friends told her that it was punk rock. We already had our tickets, so we went with an open mind and with the understanding that this would probably be quite a change from the type of theater events we are accustomed to attending. The music was loud but that didn't bother us as much as the language and the on-stage sex. We left after 40 minutes. While waiting for the valet to bring our car around, we saw another couple exit the theater and throw away their playbills in the trash. We love the Cadillac Palace and have seen many performances there. Every time, without exception, the theater was packed. On Wednesday, April 17, it wasn't even half full on the main floor. Maybe others knew something that we didn't. We learned a valuable lesson, though: research CAREFULLY before purchasing expensive tickets!

The show was good but the storyline was weak. We loved the music and the cast sang the songs well, although there could have been a little more bass in some of the songs. We enjoyed it but it didn't "knock us over". Surprised that this won a Tony Award for Best Musical.

The music was great and the actors did a good job. My one complaint was that the storyline seemed a bit forced. I think this is because they are trying to squeeze in so much in a 90 minute segment (no intermission). Also, I clicked that I would recommend to a friend but I'm going to put a caveat about who should see this. We almost took a family friend's son with us since he loves Green Day but luckily we didn't. He's only 11 and there was a lot of inappropriate scenes and language for a kid. Adults who love Green Day should enjoy the music.

The music was great (of course... it was Green Day)... didn't fit in with whatever it was that was supposed to be the plot. Thought it was inappropriate to just shove in "Good Riddance (Time of your life)' as an encore. This isn't a concert, it's supposed to be a musical story. Glad I got the tickets two for one or I would feel like an American Idiot.

I go to alot of theatre . This was one if the most entertaining, creative, and edgy pieces I have ever seen. It is not a drama, nor would I call it a musical, I would describe it as a true "punk rock opera". The music is incredible( no suprise, written by Green Day and the poetic genius that is Billie Joe Armstrong") Michael Mayer ( Spring Awakenings) is the Director. If you approach this as an opera you will find this to be an amazing work of art. It is the story of three young 20 something boys right after 9/11 trying to decide/ find where they fit into this 24/7 media based world where a coke commercial follows the reality of war on your favorite tv channel. It is a story of starting out... Searching.... And changing.... Based on the search... In the end the understanding that the true American Idiot is the lead who says he does not want to be defined that way is the acceptance and self realization from where true growth resides. 5 stars...

If you like Green Day, the music certainly won't disappoint. I actually prefered the company's performance of the music over Green Day's as the addition of the female voices, harmony, and enunciation of lyrics enhanced already strong songs. The bad was amazing -- I particularly enjoyed watching the band leader and finding the cellist under the stairs -- as were the musical talents of the actors. The lead (Alex Nee) is a ringer for Billie Joe Armstrong, which is pretty wild, but more than that, he's genuinely talented both as storyteller and musician. The stand-outs for me, however, were Heather (Kennedy Caughell), Whatshername ( ), and Tunny (Thomas Hettrick). Not only did Heather and Whatshername seem to have the most developed characters -- subtext would be nice, boys -- but the music felt as if it was tailor-made for their voices, pretty impressive since it wasn't. It was Will's "Give me Novacaine" that left me breathless though. I genuinely stopped breathing for a moment as the purity of his voice rose over the modern dance occuring center stage. (Side note: What I wouldn't give to move as beautifully as Whatshername... ) That said, for the most part I didn't connect emotionally to the story or to the characters. It all felt a little bit "Rent Lite". That wasn't the fault of the actors or of Green Day, but rather the book. There isn't much to work with there. You have three disenfranchised characters who are disenfranchised because... it's cool? They're young? We don't know; they just are. Unlike in Rent, these are slackers without a vision. They're not trying to change the world, they just want to go... make music I think. They had guitars so I'm guessing that's why they decided to leave. You can see where I'm going here. The story itself was all a little hazy -- and without a strong story, without fleshed out characters, it's difficult to CARE about these people. I appreciated the skill on stage, but felt a bit like I was watching a 20-something college production. Look, we're cool because we swear and play punk-rock music and use stage effects! Um, ok, fine, you're cool. Now make me care about your story. All this wasn't helped by the THREE endings. There was the curtain call number -- I forget which song -- where different characters are highlighted and I thought, "Huh, that's an interesting way to do a curtain call. The play would have been stronger ending earlier on '21 Guns', but ok." Then they had the actual curtain call, which felt like a bit of a cheat given the choreography & specials of the previous song, and then the urtain went down... but no, we're not done. Now we're going to try to manipulate you with a feel good, every one holding guitars, look we have hope song. What?? Johnny is in the same place as he began, as is Tunny, and Will lost a leg but found a girl. I don't feel like we're one big hopeful community. I feel like you're trying to manipulate me into feeling that. Please, don't. In a nutshell, yes, I recommend this if you like Green Day. It's a great way to experience their music. If you are looking for truly connecting with characters though, go see Wicked... or a good version of Rent without too many fans in the audience... or Miss Saigon... or Les Miserables in the theatre... or CST... or even a well-reviewed community theatre play.

I've been a Green Day fan since the early 90's and have been wanting to see this show since its release. I thought Billie Joe would put together a great show. I found that it didn't have much depth. I thought this was a great show. I already knew the album and have loved Green Day since I was a teenager. I thought this rendition of the album was brilliant, the actors were believable, talented, fun and energetic. At times, it was difficult to behave as if I was at the theater and not at a rock concert, other times I was drawn in by the drama and motionless. If you like Green Day, go. If you liked American Idiot the album, go. If you like a compelling story with an amazing soundrack, go. If you like Rock & Roll, go. I will say, however, that there seemed to be an awful lot of people there that wouldn't like the show, and not surprisingly - they didn't like the show. Many of them were not able to maintain their manners, either. There was a LOT of getting up and shuffling around, huffing and puffing, complaining about the noise... So DON'T go if you think you might fall into this category.

Basically it's just a Green Day cover band. Mediocre singing. No plot. Lots of screaming college kiddies in the audience, taking pictures, texting during performance. No manners. Left early. Loud. Strobe lights. (MIGRAINE/SEIZURE WARNING) Just a bunch of whining kids jumping on stage grabbing their crotches. Horrible choreography - not even krumping.

Each time I see American Idiot I like it more and more. The story is great on its own. There are many elements of Shakespeare embedded in the story and also perhaps a kind of retelling of the classic story of Pinoccio but told through quite a different light. And the when you add the wonderful music inspired by Green Day's Grammy award winning albums of the same name and a few other songs not on those albums; then you get a winning combination. Everybody should go check this out. It is fresh, original and fun.

Outstanding show! I am a Green Day fan and a classic theatre fan. The show was well directed and choreographed. Impressed. Also, emotionally intense (got a little chocked up a few times) Be aware - if 1st row (A) in balcony (LOGERC) there is a pole in front of you that made me have to sit up a lot. A bit uncomfortable. Took the whole family, as my son is big Green Day Fan. Music was good, and scenery was very cool. Loved the cool effects, and lots of action. However, we all felt that the vocals needed to be up in the mix more, as many of the lyrics were unintelligible (my husband is a sound guy) unless you know all the words to all the songs. Slower ballads sounded the best vocally. Drums did not appear to be miked, so were lost. In the first several numbers the dance moves looked like the same move over and over, which got boring to watch after the first number, but I did appreciate the "angst" that came through loud and clear in the dancing. Story was a bit difficult to follow unless you were up on the Green Day stuff.

If you're not familiar, it's a musical based on Green Day's 2004 American Idiot album, with a few other songs thrown in from 21st Century Breakdown. Limited narrative moves the story along, often with great humor. Saw it in 2012 in Chicago, more veteran cast so probably a touch above this year's effort. But this was still excellent. It definitely helps to know the music and understand the story but it's not required, you can still figure it out. And if not, sit back and enjoy the terrific songs from Green Day performed by a live band during the entire show and sung by the cast. I could go again and again.....

I have listened to the soundtrack since its release on iTunes. After all this time waiting to finally SEE it, my expectations were blown away. Awesome! I would see it again if it ever comes back around to Chicago.

The show was great. The energy was non stop. What a talented group of young people. I appreciate how friendly they were after the show. We got everyone's autograph and some fun photos. I'd see it again and highly recommend it.

Awesome. Loved every minute of it. Three generations went - us, our daughter and her teen son & his friend. We all would love to see it again and again. High energy, they did justice to the music, seeing the band on stage added to the fun and the sets were outstanding. Singing, dancing, music were all beyond what we expected. If you love Green Day you will love this production.

The musical was great, there was a lot going on which was very enjoyable. If you like the American Idiot album this is the show for you. As an old Punk I figured why not check it out and I was pleased with what I got out of this show. The cast was great and there was a great surprise finish after curtain call which was a great little end. I highly recommend checking out this performance if you have the chance. They had not sold out the show so we had our seats moved from the very top balcony to the main area and had a great view. Pretty much free upgrade and I will take it!

Have waited for years to see this! Love Green Day. First was disappointed with the sound balance on the heavy guitar parts and I guess through most of the show...They were set so loud they drowned out the vocals which wasn't helpful on a show that had almost no dialog and relied on the lyrics. Also didn't think there was a strong enough story woven between the songs though maybe hearing the lyrics would have helped some. I thought Movin' Out was much stronger as a story. Choreography was not inspired at all. Featured a lot of headbanging when they really could have done some fabulous street dancing to that music. Very cool set, seemed like the cast was trying too hard to be grunge angst-filled Gen-Ys.

I really liked what they did with the arrangements and the staging. They kept the feel and grittiness of the album, and then proceeded to make it even more awesome.

The only issue was for the first part of the show the acoustics were poor at best. The band was playing at such a level that the vocals were barely audible. This lasted much longer than it should have and when the finally did get it corrected it still could have been better especially in a theatre like the Cadillac.

The plot line was hard to follow. We brought my grandson, which was a mistake. He is a true fan of green days music, but the actual story had him squiming in the seat. My husband also had a hard time following the plot as well. While i got the plot, i wish there would have been more dialogue instead of so much symbolism. The music was good, but the band was quite loud, to the point where it was hard to follow the lyrics. I thought the performers did well though. Overall i would only give it 2 stars.

Music was great! I didn't care for the acting or dancing. Also, unless you already know Green Day's back story (which I didn't) the story line is very hard to follow. Don't get me wrong, I got the gist of it, but overall I still walked away a bit confused.

I'm not a huge Green Day fan, although I do like their more popular songs, but loved the show. Lot's of talent. Parents be aware that in my opinion it is not suitable for children under 17.

They've managed to combine an unforgettable visual story with the genius of Green Day's American Idiot soundtrack, for an amazing and stunning result. Like the first time you saw Hair, you won't soon forget this show. It's too bad they are only in town for one week, because I would love to go back and see it again.

It's a good show for Green Day fans. Not much to it, other than the music of Green Day. If you're a fan, you'll know all of the music, and the story (what there is) is easy to follow. If you're not a fan of the band, this isn't a show for you.

The music is great, and the cast is extraordinarily talented. I've watched the lead, Alex Nee, develop in roles at Northwestern U., and it is wonderful to see him in the kind of starring role that he deserves. But ... (there is a but) this show is in need of a plot and dialogue. This show could have been the "Rent" for this generation, but it needs more plot and character development.

The title says it all. I could not tell whatbthecshowcwas about, assuming it was about anything. It was impossible to understand any of the lyrics. If there were any melodies, it was impossible to hear them over the relentless hammering percussion. The only thing that saved it from being a total ripoff were the cute boys in their underwear.

Its hard to pick up the story for the first few songs, but otherwise you understand what's going on. There are some really raunchy scenes that really play into the purpose of both American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown albums. It was hard to find the flaws because I'm such a fan.

My fiance and I went as date night and we both thoroughly enjoyed the show, he being a Green Day fan, and me being a musical fan. I knew some of the songs, but not all, but it wasn't necessary to know all the music in order to enjoy the show. I do not recommend for families or children, the wardrobe is risque as well as the language and content (ie sex and drugs) so not for any youngsters.

This show had about 10 total lines of dialogue. I love musicals, so I usually wouldn't complain about too many songs - but you could barely understand the lyrics of the songs over the music. It also made for very underdeveloped characters, so the "poignant" moments were not meaningful because you didn't like or dislike any of the characters, you were just indifferent. The cast was good, but it wasn't enough to make the show decent. I would save your money.

The show was out of this world! I knew the music was going to be amazing, but the storyline was really great as well! The only negative was we paid for VIP Suite tickets and there wasn't even an intermission, so we couldn't take full advantage of it and it ended up being a huge waste of money. Also DON'T TAKE PICTURES! They will take your phone away and make you delete everything.

Total waste of my night. Did not enjoy one thing about the show. Adult theme was raunchy and the cast was not attractive--not a single one! Dancing consisted of the girls and guys headbanging--this was SO annoying. The strobes were overkill too. Seeing a pale man sing in white spandex boxers-at least get someone who's hot! Same with the female cast. Lead of show looked exhausted and did not give 100%. I've seen hundreds of musicals and I hope to forget this. With it being a short run in Chicago, marketing knew what they were doing. Capture quick $. Parking garage just west of theater (north side of street) kiddy corner from Cadillac Palace on Randolph overcharged me $37 - receipt showed I was there over 12 hours. Buyers beware-there are better places (the suburbs) for live theater. Never again! I cannot say enough on how much I disliked the cast. My sons high school shows and talent superseed this! Being the liberal I am... need I mention lesbian too....this was not even close to a somewhat enjoyable evening. Catch a dinner instead or shop- do NOT be an American Idiot-save your money skip it or better yet, stay home!

This is a great show! The singing and dancing is non-stop adrenalin punctuated with several wonderful acoustic interludes. The band was fantastic but overpowered the vocals at times. Overall this is one of the best 90-minute musicals of all time!

Poor character and story development. The album is about youth angst. There are hundreds of story lines that could have been developed. Instead they spent 95% of the show singing and dancing and virtually no time telling a story or getting me involved with the characters

The music was well performed and the production value was high, but there was not an actual story here. The songs were loosely tied together by boring, forced monologues. About 10 minutes in, I was anxiously awaiting the end.
