Concert started on time at 8:05 ended about 10:40 with no breaks. Pat came out with his Picasso 42 string guitar and played an amazing song. Then brought out the Unity band, they played 5 songs or so including Roofdogs, and the PMG song James. The crowd was very enthusiastic. He introduced the band and songs.. then brought out the newest member Giulio Carmassi on keyboards, who has been billed as a multi-instrumentalist. The piano was at the back of the stage behind the drums. He never moved from the keyboards, no other instruments were played by him. He could barely be seen, all that was visible was his head. The lid of the grand piano was opened towards the back of the stage, very unusual for a performance. He was hard to hear and see! That may have been part of the play because the piano sounded bad, not his playing (as he was hard to hear) but the sound of the piano itself... once again very strange... Lyle Mays keyboard instruments always sounded great when he was in the band. The PMUG played cuts from their new album KIN, the audience gave two standing ovations during this section of the show. Pat was playing great and the band members were all in sync with each other. Pat played duos with all the other band members.. the best of the bunch was Pat and Ben Williams version of Bright Side Life... the weakest was Pat and Giulios. A couple of other comments... The Orchestrion was used (some would say overused) during the PMUG part of the concert... flashing lights let the audience know what instruments were being played... it seemed to me that at times it was getting in the way of the music the real musicians were playing. Plus poor Giulio stashed back there on keyboards seemed outclassed by the rest of these fine musicians. Perhaps this is why Pat chose to hide him away. Lyle Mays was sorely missed... hopefully he will be back for the next album. Overall a good concert... recommended for all Pat Metheny fans, with caveats for the Orchestrion and Giulio's performance.

Last nights performance was the highlight of all my musical experiences combined. I am proud to have lived in this time and carry the memory of the evening in my museum of fondest recollections. I was there, I saw, and I believe in Unity. It was Music in all its magnificent splendor and possibilities. Pat Metheny Unity Group was Genius that defies description. Their music was a spiritual anointment of my senses. Musical Singularity!

People in Kansas area missed out. Venue holds 2400 people, only 350 @ most were there, but Pat Metheny is a pro and played like 10,000 were in attendance. Wish I could catch this show again in another city. His new band (Unity Group), are really in cink. Doug D

I've seen every Pat Metheny tour since the mid-80's and this was one of the best. Excellent mix of new and old music, performed exceptionally. The Orchestrion is becoming a vital part of the act - I was unconvinced at first, but feel it adds an additional layer or two to the overall sound. Kin is the closest to a PMG album in years which pleases me. I certainly miss Lyle and Steve and hope to hear/see them soon.

Pat Metheny and the current Unity Band define what it means to improvise. Within the tight structure of Metheny's complex melodies the band members, especially saxman Chris Potter, went to amazing places in this show. Metheny started solo on the Pikasso guitar, then was joined by the other members. They played three numbers from the original Unity Band album then went through most of the music from their current CD "Kin" They finished with a great version of "Have you heard?" and did the first encore with "Are you going with me" The crowd wouldn't let him leave so he came out and did a solo acoustic medley of his melodies. Twice during the concert the crowd stood up in the middle of the number, so good was the improvisations they were enjoying. I've seen Pat about 14 times over the last 34 years and this was as good a show as he has ever presented.

Pros: virtuosity of musicianship, great sound Cons: I was a little disappointed in the length of the set and the set list. I saw the Unity Band in Sep 2012 and the same songs from that album were done as they were then which made it seem a little redundant; even the encores were the same. There were a few songs from Kin but would have preferred more. Also, it was difficult to hear the new player's keyboards in the mix. The set was two hours including the encores. I read where another show was two and a half hours; maybe it was shorter because it wasn't a sold-out show but I hope that's not true.

The fastest 2 hours that I can recall!! Great musicians, arrangements, and songs. I hadn't heard much of the new music yet still it was a great listen. I appreciated the final 2 songs going back to classics. I hoped Pat would mentioned a little about the 'Orchestrion' -- I watched fascinated throughout the night.

We have followed Matheny for many years. A brilliant musician with so much energy, one can only appreciate this new adventure. We are not sure how much we liked the new turn to the music . The Unity Band is certainly a new direction and we hope it will grow to a smoother sound. This jazz is in your face and is multi-layer genius.

For the second time in almost 40 years I made the 200+ mile round-trip to Phoenix metro area to see a concert...and both times for Pat Metheny! Concert started with the Unity Band Quartet for several numbers. The last hour Pat introduced keyboard/vocalist Giulio Carmassi along with the addition of Pat's Orchestrion and they became The Unity Group. They did a number of tunes from the new CD "Kin" and there was now that "wall of sound" from the Group that I enjoy so much. Surprisingly one of the most impactful songs was a very slow and soulful number called "Born" which could easily become my new favorite. The group came out for an encore and for the second encore, Pat returned to the stage solo and performed a medley of his best on acoustic guitar. They are all just superb jazz virtuosos and Pat has my vote as the greatest jazz guitarist ever!

My husband and I were among the fortunate few to be in the audience Saturday night. The concert went non-stop for 2.5 hours. The audience was psyched from the get-go and the musicians proved themselves worthy of our accolades. There was great variety and rhythm in the set and they played with such intensity at times that it reminded me of the fever pitch that is typical of great Qawwali singers in India. Yes, this was a spiritual experience. Pat Metheny is truly worthy of all the Grammy awards he has received and still he comes across as a very humble and sweet man with great respect for his band mates.

So happy that Pat Metheny was able to put Durham back on his tour, after an ice storm cancelled his February date! My husband and I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform twice before over the past 30 years, and this time we were so happy to include one of the next generation of Pat fans in our concert experience: our 24 year old son. Pat and the band blew us all away! He just keeps on inspiring!!! Go Pat go...

This was one incredible show. Bruce and Pat opened the show with a campfire style sit down. Playing traditional and new songs. Bruce continued for the next 45 minutes with his drummer and they sound fantastic. Pat and his band took to the stage for at least an hour and a half. They really brought the Metheny magic. Pat even played an "unplugged" set of his most memorable hits. Bruce returned to the stage and together they delighted the audience with Bruce's hit "That's Just Way it Is". This show is a must see. Limited dates, so catch it while you can. I had excellent box seats next to the stage. Perfect!!!

Pat was great, he is constantly changing his style and improving his concerts. Bruce needs to go back and play the music that put the pool in his back yard. That noise he was pounding away on was not enjoyable and his opinions of his previous audiences was like listening to old guy at McDonald's that is pissed off with life... Pat needs to pick a better artist to tour with, Bruce is a has-bin..

I ve been a fan of Pat s since 1979 when American Garage came out, but hadn't seen him live in nearly 8 years. I'd never seen Bruce live. Sonny Emory was a revelation. The cats were amazing, performing in various groupings. Among the highlights were Bruce s mandolin-less Mandolin Rain, Pat s acoustic medley of his songs, and both bands joining together for The Way It Is as a final encore. Every musician blew me away!

what a wonderful collaboration of musical backgrounds. The performance by Bruce Hornsby and Sonny Emory was absolutely wicked. The artistry of these men just transfigured the audience from mortals to celestial beings. It was great stuff! Pat Metheny and the Unit Group was nothing less than extraordinary poetry. I purchased his latest CD a few months before attending this performance. I am absolutely thrilled to hear many of the pieces recorded in the KIN [-] CD. can't say in word really what I experienced from Pat, Chris, Antonio, Ben and Giulio's instrument artistries, synthesized into an organic mosaic of the human existential need to worship! Boy what a goodie!

The Pat Metheny unity group was one word Awesome, this was the second time this year that I saw them in concert. As far as Bruce Hornsby he was ok I lot different than what I like. I've been a Metheny fan for over sixteen years ( thanks to my Dad ) if the remainder of his tour wasn't so far away trust me I would pay to see him again! Jazz enthusiasts he's a definite Must See!

Spice added to the usual Metheny fare. Hornsby is interesting (if not exactly to my taste). At a Hornsby show I'm sure the fans would be somewhat disappointed with his oddball and somewhat divergent cover of "Mandolin Rain", but the Metheny crowd assembled took it in stride. Pat did his usual thing. He still (over?)emphasized the material from "Kin" (and oddly, to my way of thinking, left out the most moving segment). When Pat & Bruce performed together . . . that's when you were glad you were there. 3:10 from start to finish. No intermission.

I probably was one of the few guests who came to see Pat Metheny, majority was there to see / hear Bruce Hornsby. Bruce opened the concert pretty much on time, he played for about an hour with a great percussionist, but all of his new stuff - he played a jam solo version of Mandolin rain and got lots of BOO's when he left the stage after about an hour. Pat's opening was amazing ! The Unity thing was interesting for about an hour then it got too repetitive and boring to listen to, sorry one can only take so much free style jazz in one evening. Again, more of Pat's great songs instead of all new improvised stuff would have been so much better

Mehteny is a magician no matter what he plays. Played mostly new stuff but managed to mix in a couple of clasics. If I have one regret it is that instead of having his usuall full band, about five insruments were actually computer driven. Other than that I got my monies worth. He played for about 2 1/2 hours.

The two Unity Albums have fresh sounding compositions, and exiting playing - each, with their own individual sound. The Pat Matheny concert does what is becoming so rare in live performances. It feels intimate, yet the players are performing sincerly and freely, yet remaining connected with the audience. Pat Metheny is exellent at engaging with the audience the proper amount and, like his playing, is sincere. The level of musicianship and composition/arrangements is flat out staggering. Yet, like many players of this level, they all seem loose, and connected to one another.

Such a lame crowd. Not a breath taken nor a movement made. We felt like we were in church at a funeral! Pat was too serious and self absorbed. From the beginning of the show he was in his own zone and not involving or inviting the audience to be in the moment. Very disappointing because he is a fabulous musician. I will still listen to old music from way back with fond memories and try and forget this last experience.

At 60, Pat Metheny hasn't slowed down one bit. Any Pat Metheny fan for the last 30+ years would really appreciate the compositions performed in this concert. In addition to the newer materials from the Unity Band/Group, Metheny performed from Bright Size Life, 80/81, Song X, and many songs from his Pat Metheny Group era (not over yet, hopefully!). He took his fans through a musical journey spanning nearly four decades. Few musicians come close to his range and technical brilliance. The concert was not flawless, however. The low light was the duet with Giulio Carmassi. This rendition of Mas Alla was difficult to listen to. Carmassi simply doesn't have the vocal abilities of Pedro Aznar. Nevertheless, it was among my favorite Pat Metheny concerts. In addition to the music, he brought back a lot of memories.

The sound & view (from loges) was excellent. While Mr. Metheny and his sidemen are excellent musicians, I was disappointed that he did not play more melodic selections I remember from hearing on the radio. I was next to impossible to follow chord structure moves because of the complexity of the music. I enjoyed the Rippingtons more.

There was a travel ban and we would have been ticketed, if we could have even got out of our driveway. We were very disappointed that neither ticketmaster or the Rochester venue would reimburse us.

Pat within his own right is a truly amazing artist, but with this group, they are unstoppable. Everyone, even those who have their doubts about jazz, should see this ridiculously amazing group of performers who never miss a beat.

I wasn't too familiar with Bruce, but he was great. Pat Matheny was incredible, and the band was terrific as well. Great venue, I had a good time.

Excellent concert. So glad Pat and group made it back to Carolina Theatre after feb concert was cancelled due to snow/ice. They played 2 + hours without a break. My favorite song was from Kin (<-->) called 'Born". The drummer was awesome. Loved the harplike sound of the unique Pikasso guitar.

Where do I begin? First of all the staff at the Carolina Theatre must be commended for their fine work. It was pouring rain all day and my wife and I got there early and they graciously let us in the venue well before the show. As for Pat and the group, words are hard to explain this group. They are no ordinary Jazz band. Usually when you see a jazz band they'll play standards or their own songs with a lot of improve, which turns me off. Pat and the band do a lot of improve but they do it within the framework of the song. Each musician is a master of his instrument in this band! The band consists of Pat, Chris Potter on Saxophones, Antonio Sanchez on Drums, Ben Williams on Acoustic Bass and Giulio Carmassi on Keyboards. I loved this concert! But I will also say that Pat is not for everyone or if you loved Pat 25 years ago you may not have any idea where he has gone? The best label you can put Pat Metheny under is Advangard or Progressive Jazz. He is differently not the Rippington's or any other "bubble gum Jazz" group. This group is well ahead of its time! The show was worth 10x the amount of my $70 ticket! One complaint, the seating at this theatre are old and the rolls are very close together, so if you're like my wife who has long legs, it's hard sitting for three hours.

Words are not enough to describe what it means to go to a Pat Metheny concert and witness greatness like no other. It is inspiring and overwhelming at the same time. It is a great experience for the Pat Metheny's body of work connoisseur, to be able to understand that he is delivering decades of compositions, ideas, and evolution. There is no other concert that I have attended to, that provides this level of musicianship and experience. Pat's new band is incredible, and one that understands and delivers Metheny's concept perfectly. Thank you Pat Metheny for been such a great artist and deliver such an incredible show!!! Thank you Duke Performances for putting this together for the community!!

Pat Metheny, fellow masters, and the gee-whiz Orchestrion put on a beautiful show at the intimate Town Hall. The artists doled out luscious helpings of heart, soul, viscera, and mind. The audience was there to drink it in and echo back their appreciation. We might as well have been sitting in Pat's living room or a small jazz club, given the well-explained format, quiet moments, and downstage playing. As for the musicians, special shout outs to Antonio Sanchez for blanketing the set with polyrhythms and technique to dazzle; Ben Williams for laying down a groove with plenty of breathing room; Chris Potter for lyricism and a link to jazz history (love those quotes in the solos); and Giulio Carmassi for not getting in the way. One cannot help but feel Pat Metheny is in a class by himself as soloist or bandleader, as this beautiful evening demonstrated. Only criticism: fewer notes would not have ruined the show; silence is often as dazzling as strings of sixteenth-notes.

This was my first live performance attendance for Metheny. He and his group are extraordinary musicians which carried the concert; however, I must note the following: 1) Sitting in the balcony, stage right, I was very disappointed having to stare at Pat's back for the three hour concert. Other than his opening solo, and a few brief moments when he spoke to the audience, his body posture was fixed on the other musicians. It is important , when performing before a live audience, he connects with them personally by facing all sections of the audience which even Steve Wonders tries to do! 2) I found his guitar riffs redundant. There's a problem when you play exceptionally fast, technically, but don't leave enough time/space for the ears and brain to comprehend what you are playing. Often, the space between the notes are as important as the notes.

Pat Metheney and Unity Group are phenomenal..absolutely amazing..very high up, maybe the highest degree of musical talent I have ever seen/heard and i've been part of a lot of excellent live concerts.. they were graceful and grateful human beings. Jazz music's finest. There were moments of electrifying ecstasy's and somber meanderings..the emotional and psychological spectrum was bridged. The musicians spoke with their instrumental abilities in a very affecting way. It was truly something special to have been a part of. Great musicians, great audience, just truly great concert!!! loved every moment.

Mr. Metheny is at his very peak composing and performing. He is getting better and better with age. What i enjoyed the most was his solos with Chris Potter, Antonio Sanchez and Ben Williams . There are no words to describe the virtuosity, versatility and maturity of these musicians, just exceptional. The length of the entire concert was more than two hours and a half. It would be a good thing to have a brief intermission, so audience and musicians can stretch ,have a sip of water and go to the bathroom if they need too. The song" Dream of the Return" interpreted by the new member of the band Giulio Carmassi, unfortunately did not delivered the real sentiment of this original composition. The overall concert was an extraordinary experience to be remember.

The Unity Group was awesome, the new album is great and the music selection was amazing. He covered the last two albums almost completely and he did a whole bunch of favorites, some with an acoustic twist. The evening was memorable and Pat is like the ever ready bunny. "He just keeps on giving" a two and a half hour show nonstop.

Excellent Acoustics I have several cassettes of Pat Metheny Group or Band. I know he has high talent by his musical sound. I would of love to have heard him at the Montreal Jazz festival. It was a treat for him to come to the Town Hall here in NYC. I have also heard his music on You Tube. His music is great jazz. Song X, Works, Letter from Home and with Dave Holland/ Roy Haynes are several pieces of music I have of him as well as with Jaco Pastuere. God Bless all of the music he does.

I've been a huge Metheny fan and first saw him as a sideman in Gary Burton's group in the 70s. The quartet was fabulous as expected. Potter and Sanchez are among the most exciting players around today. I was very much looking forward to my introduction to Giuilio Carmassi but he could not be heard adequately enough which was a disappointment. While he sang and played piano honestly it appeared he may have spent most of the evening triggering the Orchestrion from a MIDI keyboard.

Pat Metheny is like fine wine, he just gets better with time. The set list was awesome, new tunes with old sprinkled in. The band was tight and meshed flawlessly. If I can catch them in another city, I'd see them again. The show was that captivating. See the Pat Metheny Unity Group if you can. I highly recommend seeing this great concert.

Both brilliant and terrible in one night. I've been following the PMG for over 30 years now and have seen Pat in concert over 50 times. I've come to expect a lot more from these concerts than what I got Friday night. Performance wise, Pat and Chris were on fire. Pat had some fabulous solos. The stage setup was so strange. If you were sitting in the left third of the audience, all you could see was Pat's back. I like to watch his fingers flying on the fret board as well as his intense facial expressions. Couldn't see any of it. Having been very spoiled by Lyle Mays' influence in the arrangements, I'm not crazy about this new music. It reminds me a lot of "Secret Story" in the sense that you can tell that Pat has personally arranged the keyboard parts. He should stick to guitar playing in my opinion. If Lyle doesn't want to go on tour, at least let him arrange the music. I'm not really sure what the point of having Giulio Carmassi up there was. I felt embarrassed for him. I sat in the orchestra section and he was tucked in the back, you couldn't even see him. It was like Pat needed somebody to pretend to be playing the sequenced keyboard parts. All the Orchestrion machinery was very prominent on stage. As cool as that stuff is, I wish Pat would ditch it. I am really missing the sound of humans filling in the sound. If Giulio was in fact playing anything, he should have been out front instead of the robots. Anyway, I am being very negative here, really missing the Lyle Mays aspect of the group. Overall, if you love serious jazz, by all means go see this show. The Unity "band" is top notch in that department. If you are expecting or hoping to see a resurrection of "The Pat Metheny Group", it isn't happening on this tour.

Being a huge Pat fan having seen him perform many times, I always expect a great live performance. This show was exceptional! Most of the body of the show featured the Unity band at its finest. I will say, I am not as familiar with the Unity band songs as I am with the PMG and the solo Metheny 'works' which I know and listen to almost daily. I will be listening to them (unity material) now, though. The band was spot on! Tight, great sounding, individually awesome at their instruments as well as collectively. I expected the show to be mostly of the recent two albums of the Pat /Unity band and it was. As I mentioned before, I am not that familiar with the material, but I quickly grew to like it. The first set featured songs from the first Unity band album along with a very high spirited version of "James" ( a Metheny classic). The second set and my favorite part of the body of the show featured the new cd. I am ashamed to say that I don't know the titles of new cd yet, but three tunes really stood and were fantastic. The three songs were two really rocking jazz tunes that surrounded a love ballad that grew with intensity to an exciting finish. Just great stuff! It was fresh and yet reminded me of the best of PMG material. The show finished with a couple of PMG classics including a stripped down version of "Are you going with me". The encore was one of greatest Metheny moments I have ever had. By himself, with only an acoustic guitar in hand, Pat came out and performed several of the 'best of Pat Metheny", including "Antonia", "this is not America" and "Last train home". It was incredible! I didn't want it to end. I felt privileged to see a master craftsman and song writer in such an intimate setting.

I've been a big fan since 1981 ... this was the most disappointing Pat show I've seen. The opening song was amazing ... transcendent ... and by itself was almost worth the price of admission! But after that there were only a couple of strong Pat efforts. The rest of it was just technically difficult but generally annoying and pointless jazz numbers that we've seen and heard so many other bands do. That which has made Pat's music so unique and compelling was mostly missing.

Wow! It started with Pat on his Pikasso 42 string custom guitar and only got better from there. Almost 3 hours of non stop music that exceeded my highest expectations. This was my 4th Pat Metheny concert in 35 years.
