All the Way

All the Way is a gripping new play about a pivotal moment in American history and stars three-time Emmy Award-winning actor Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad”) as President Lyndon B. Johnson.  This drama will take audiences behind the doors of the Oval Office and inside the first years of President Johnson's presidency, and his fight to pass a landmark civil rights bill.  Cranston as President Johnson will lead an ensemble cast playing roles such as Martin Luther King, Jr.

I cannot say enough about this play, the actors are all excellent. However, Bryan Cranston is a phenomenal performer. His performance is electrifying throughout the play. The energy and understanding of LBJ he bring to life are second to none. And to top it off, he is the nicest actor I have ever met, he makes you feel like you know him personally. He takes his time signing All The Way items (only, no Breaking Bad or Malcolm items please!), for all the photos you want and he is extremely engaging in conversation. Funny, down to earth and a gifted actor in a class all his own. I recommend this play for all the wonderful performers, they really do the subject and historical figures justice. But Cranston steals the show.

This play is history coming alive. Well done by all actors. The set and production quality is top notch. The leading man is out of this world and his fellow cast mates match his enthusiast way of telling this incredible story. The LBJ story will never be the sane to me now that I have witnessed this play.

Bryan Cranston was the reason for me to see All The Way. But it's not only him why you should go to this play. Brandon J. Dirden as Martin Luther King Jr. is just as impressive. The complete cast is. It's an amazing play, one of the best I've seen so far. Sometimes I forgot it was Bryan Cranston on stage, he is President Johnson. Indeed a performance of a lifetime!

We were blown away! Having lived through the era after the assassination of JFK and the Johnson years we could relate to the events. Bryan Cranston delivered a spectacular performance. I can't think of any other actor who could have done it as well.

Since War Horse, I haven't seen anything so fabulous on Broadway (or off). 3 hours which go by in an instant. Brilliant performances. Bryan Cranston is a superstar but he is not alone although rarely off the stage. My politics changed as a result of this evening. LBJ had a cause and the guts and the brains to deliver what he dreamt of. He was a staggeringly capable politician but his purpose was extraordinary and he, the "accidental" president , accomplished what JFK could only dream of. It is hard not to feel how current today's politics are to LBJ's time. We just have Obama instead of Kennedy and Biden is no LBJ. If from what you are reading here, you think you have to care about history and politics to be mesmerized by this play, this production, these performances. Well, yes, it would be good if you cared. But,i t is a huge drama and very satisfying. We need to film it and make it available to every classroom in the US.

Bryan Cranston gave an unforgettable performance that was a master class in acting. He WAS LBJ all the way in speech, mannerisms and body language for nearly three hours. The show itself is a great vision of Johnson, the man, and the entire cast is terrific. But it is Bryan Cranston who is the must-see...even better than he was as Mr. White!

Cranston & company were quite enjoyable. I left with a bad taste in my mouth when after spending $150/ticket, I was asked for more money in the form of donations for local theater. You're wealthy, Mr. Cranston - correct? Why not you show us how it's done & next time auctioning your "ear flaps" were over the top! - still an enjoyable show! some times a little over animated, but memorable!

Bryan Cranston was amazing, as was Brandon Dirdon. The story line was interesting, especially if you are a history/politico file. However, 3 hours was quite long. There was supposed to be a talk back, but instead there was an auction of the prosthetic ears, after which we left to make the train back to NJ.

Intense acting throughout the entire cast make it a cinch to sit through nearly three hours of show time. Bryan Cranston is clearly one of, if not the best actor of our day. He just becomes LBJ on stage, encompassing all of the past President's ways and changing between them in an instant. Supporting cast does a great job and surprisingly, they never seem to become overshadowed by Cranston's remarkable performance. See it before it's gone. Thoroughly enjoyable and gripping.

I actually work as an usher in that theatre. I bought the ticket for my mother, because I told her she absolutely could not miss this amazing show. She loved it! It was a bit long, but a lot went on with President Johnson in filling in for President Kennedy and working so hard to get the Civil Rights bill passed. I wished that the show could have been extended, but I think that Mr. Cranston had other obligations. I feel honored to have worked there and happy that my mom who of course remembers much more than me what went on during that turbulent time in our country's history, got to see one of the best shows ever.

"All the Way" was a wonderful, painless history lesson about the subtleties of politics. With the back room machinations of LBJ, George Wallace, Martin Luther King, and J. Edgar Hoover, it is a wonder any reforms happened with Civil Rights in the 1960s. Although the play is overly long--clocking in at three hours--the tale needed that long to get all the details in. The staging was wonderful, and the performances were fabulous; there was not a weak player in the ensemble. Bryan Cranston portrayed Johnson's profane energy extremely well and even managed to get some sympathy from the audience. In the end, "All the Way" is a compelling piece of theater not because of the writing as much as the dramatic events it displayed. In the hands of less inventive directors and less talented actors, this script could have easily fallen flat. This production did everything right and made for a wonderful theatrical experience.

Bryan Cranston did a very realistic job as LBJ, and the events (which I personally witnessed as a resident of Washington DC during this time) rang very true. It was a memorable time with memorable leaders who made an important change in this country's history. The flawed behavior of these same leaders was also very realistic. "All the way" brings the 60's to life. It was astonishing how many of the social issues which divided people then are still very much with us today. The acting was superb, and nuanced. The amount of compromising that was needed to achieve things we take for granted now is food for thought.

Is there anything Bryan Cranston can't do? He's gone from playing the hapless Hal in Malcolm in the Middle to the unforgettable drug kingpin Walter White in Breaking Bad. Coming off the latter's phenomenal success and much talked about finale, he transitions once again into the 36th president of the United States. The play begins at that fateful moment in 1963 when Johnson becomes the accidental president and follows him through that first turbulent year when he pushes for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. At three hours Cranston is on stage for almost the entire time often delivering lengthy speeches as he cajoles, schmoozes and threatens friends, foes and former congressional colleagues to see things his way. The supporting cast is impressive as well but this is Cranston's show and it's hard to imagine anyone else with the talent and command to take on the bigger than life persona of LBJ. It's true that the first half is a bit faster, better and more focused than the second act which drags a bit as it focuses on some of the turbulent events of 1964 such as the murder of the civil rights workers in Mississippi and the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City leading up to LBJ's campaign to be elected outright in a battle against the conservative Barry Goldwater, but that's probably due to the playwright trying to fit it all the important events of that time. None the less, every moment that Cranston is on stage is captivating and a treat to see a masterful actor displaying his talent and showing us once again that he is much more than the menacing Walter White.

I never paid much attention during my US history classes in high school but Mr. Cranston brings the time of the LBJ administration to life. Supporting cast also does an amazing job. This play was wonderful when I saw the original production in Cambridge, but if anything the Broadway version is even better! Bryan is so full of energy and his acting talent is off the scale. As a fan of Bryan Cranston, presidential history and theater, I was really excited to see All The Way. First, the pros...the acting was all good to great. The staging was really terrific. Now the cons...Bryan Cranston seemed more like a carricature than a fully enhabited character. The play was way too long and needed editing. Also, it felt like too many small scenes that didn't seem to coalesce in to a strong story. Lastly, the theater was absolutely awful. The seats were so close together. I am 5 foot 3 and I couldn't have my handbag in front of my feet: it had to be shoved under the seat of the person in front of me. The seats weren't staggered so that the woman in front of me obscured my view so I had to weave to the left and right to see the stage. The night before I had seen Casa Valentina and it was a wonderful play and the theater.

All the Way is not just for history buffs or politicos, all though they will justly flock to see this fascinating accounting of LBJ's bullish maneuvering around his enemies, family, and Hill conspirators. Students should be mandatorily dropped off by the bus loads, mine enjoyed it immensely. Those who witnessed the Civil Rights act firsthand will be moved and have much to discuss afterwards. Intentionally planned a 16th birthday celebration for our granddaughter who convinced us to "know" Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad. Many of our fellow New Mexicans are devoted fans. We are ardent admirers of this truly remarkable and gifted man whose obvious dedication to his craft, soulfulness and passion lead to a brilliant portrayal of LBJ. The Civil Rights storyline was indeed quite accurate as I remember it. The supporting cast, with the exception of Lady Bird, was hit and miss. The passion and strong character and persona of Martin was not conveyed as I would have expected. Overall, a wonderful experience. Bryan will go "all the way" to the Tony for Best Actor!

Mesmerizing story line, and close to authentic LBJ portrayal. I'm a 60+ year old native Texan, so lived through this period and remember him and the 1960s.) I love the fact that the play illustrates how hard political change can be, the wheeling and dealing required. History books never reveal that struggle. I liked the same point about 1776. The only thing that wasn't exactly right was that there was a certain amount of frivolity in the portrayal of LBJ that neither I nor my husband ever saw in him during his political life. He was brash, crude, aggressive, domineering, and a great president, but not silly, Of course, I never saw him in private, so maybe the director knows something I don't.

Cranston is a god. The cast is terrific. Staging is genius. A once in a lifetime chance to see this amazing cast/script come together.

I bought these tickets for my son and his friends. They said not only was the play fantastic, but afterward they were able to meet Mr. Cranston and take a picture with him. It was a great experience for them.

All The Way with Bryan Cranston was fantastic. Watching him act is a privilege, and the rest of the cast was wonderful as well. Its too bad the show had to have such a limited engagement. I hope Bryan Cranston heads back to Broadway soon - I won't miss his performance!

As a history teacher I knew all of the events that were upcoming, did not take away any of the drama of each moment. The tormented nature of LBJ could not have been demonstrated any better. I hope they turn this play into a movie so that I may share the experience with my students more practically.

Criteria
A play requires character development--confrontation with adversity that changes a character. There is a rising action and a falling action. This was no more than a newsreel of LBJ's election victory in 1964. It is shallow and historically inaccurate in so many places that it is not even as accurate as yellow journalism. Sure, Bryan Cranston carries the vehicle--but one could go off-off Broadway to see Sylvia Milo in Mozart's sister given an even better performance for a fraction of the ticket price. All The Way is just one more piece of highly hyped dreck.

OK, I confess, I have now seen this play three times - first time in Cambridge, MA, second a few weeks ago in NY, and now my third time, again, front row center in NY. All I can say is -- it looks as if there may be a couple of seats left for tomorrow's (Sunday's) performance -- GO SEE THIS PLAY!!!! Do whatever you have to do to see it -- who knows how long it may be before you get to see Bryan Cranston on Broadway again. He is magnificent, the play is gripping every moment from beginning to end. I walked past the theater this afternoon and saw a woman standing outside who was willing to pay $450 for a ticket for one of today's performances (sold out). I could sympathize. It's that good. Do whatever you can do to get a ticket -- you won't regret it.

I thought Cranston did a remarkable job portraying LBJ. The supporting cast was also very good, especially John McMartin. Cranston was very funny but knew how and when to play "hard ball."

Loved seeing Bryan Cranston in this informative historical play. about LBJ. Have to admit, his star power is the reason I went. He did a wonderful job, and seeing him in another role besides Walter White was a thrill!!!.. Kudos also to the other performers who were intense and passionate in their roles too. A great experience. Ps Before the play, I saw the Charlie Rose interview re all the research Mr Cranston did on LBJ. (He was a complicated man). Mr Cranston 'got it', and let us "get" the nuances of LBJ's character. Hope he comes back to Broadway after he gets in his much needed rest. !! ( As an actor, Mr Cranston reminds me of Meryl Streep.. they both can play many diverse roles and are Extremely gifted and talented).. Thanks for a great experience. Will be looking eagerly for his next perfomance, whenever that may be.

"All the Way" is the story of President Lyndon B. Johnson and the turbulent year from when he took office (following the assassination of Pres. Kennedy) in November 1963 through the hard-fought passage of the Civil Rights Bill to his eventual re-election in November 1964. Bryan Cranston (of TV's "Breaking Bad") is dynamic as the 47th president, a "good old boy" Texan, a politically-savvy Washington player, and a man who genuinely cared for the civil rights of all Americans.

Characters were well cast and developed throughout. Bryan Cranston must have studied many hours to get LBJ's gestures and mannerisms down so perfectly! There were so many stirring and tense moments that it felt like an emotional workout. Memorable and delivered what it promised!

This had to be one of the best performances I've been lucky enough to catch on Broadway this season. I cannot explain how transfixed I was by Bryan Cranston's portrayal of LBJ. The supporting cast was superb. This was the highlight of the season.

For Breaking Bad fans who know how Bryan Cranston transformed himself from Mr. White to Heisenberg ... He does it again going from Bryan Cranston to LBJ. The performance is amazing and the play presents an important time in history in an enjoyable fast moving 3 hours. I didn't want the story to end.

I recently had the chance to see All The Way with Bryan Cranston. It is hard to say which was better, the play itself or Mr. Cranson's performance. He was beyond incredible! It was a refresher course in a very important part of American history. Easy to see it won Tony awards for best play as well as best actor. The only disappointment is it is closing on June 29th. I was glad a was able to view such a wonderful performance.
