The Fox theatre was stunning but so was this production of Joseph. I saw Donny Osmond do the Joseph role and thought it was fabulous. However this is a retooled version with the choreography updated and a crisp new look. I loved it! A few of the projections didn't quite make sense but overall it was fabulous! Excellent cast and Joseph (JC McCann) was amazing! His voice and stage presence was right up there with Donny! I would highly recommend catching this touring show.

The staging was fantastic. Pharaoh was the best I've seen, He fit right in here in Memphis. The Canan Days scene was very well done. Joseph was okay, but his voice was a bit nasal. The Narrator was okay, but she did hit a few wrong notes. The use of lighting and the costumes was something I hadn't seen on previous showings of Joseph. I saw Donny Osmond as Joseph on Broadway, and the present Joseph isn't as good.

Such a fun, upbeat show! Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young were so amazing - especially Diana - she has such a beautiful voice and a flawless delivery - made it look easy! The cast did a fabulous job. It was especially great to have "the King" back home in Memphis!

In our family's opinion, this was the MOST disappointing interpretation of this wonderful musical we have ever seen! Our family decided to use this show as the starting block for a life long love and exposure to musical theater for our sons; however, we got a very non cohesive, disjointed, high schoolish performance that left much to be desired. And for $80 a ticket, we could have spent that elsewhere and had a much better show. Whoever designed the set (very minimalistic except for the jail set and way too digital for 2000 BC) and the costumes (Joseph in Nikes?? Benjamin in a Hawaiian shirt?? The narrator in modern clothes - where was her harem attire?? The cast of girls in white sheets at times not needed for the digital displays??) should be replaced!! The show opened with what appeared to be smoke from a genie bottle - neat - but ended up being smoke from a train dream that led into a group of very modernly dressed kids at a library? What does that have to do with "dreams coming true"? Whoever thought of that beginning needs to readdress their idea because it didn't come across as having anything to do with the show. (and it was never brought back into the story line at another time to tie it in somehow) The show also missed so many comedic opportunities to emphasize the lyrics. In other Joseph shows, after clever lyrical lines were sung, the cast has paused for the audience to enjoy and laugh. This never happened because this cast didn't seem to effectively act toward the audience and instead skimmed right throughout he words. The transitions were muddled and hard to follow - even having seen this show three other times, I found myself explaining what my sons were seeing instead of allowing them to enjoy a story they know so well. And the dancing\u2026..so sloppy!! Again, high schoolish - not sharp and looked as if it were a rehearsal run through not a high energy Friday night performance as promised by the Orpheum Representative before the show began. The show had too much modern dancing for a show set before Jesus' time - especially the cast of girls bumping and grinding in white sheets. If this were "Cabaret", then that style of dance fits - not during Egyptian times. In other shows, the cast had a grand time with the Ishmaelites, too - another missed opportunity. Our disappointment also lies with the fact that those never having seen the show really missed out on the very funny and clever lyrics from this score because of the direction of, production of, and performance by this group. On a positive note, the music is still fantastic and original! The men did an excellent job singing the french song "Canaan" - the lead was fantastic! Why wasn't he Joseph? Ace as Joseph was a too wimpy tenor, hard to understand (opening your mouth widely would help), and not powerful enough to carry a dramatic performance that requires crescendos and powerful emotional endings. Even my son asked if he was trying to sound like a sad girl. He was the worst dancer in the cast and wasn't convincing as a loving son to Jacob, a playful yet naive brother, a scared slave, a resentful brother in power, or a convincing confident right hand man to the King. If his voice had more powerful range, this may have been able to be brought across in his music. It was nice that the tempo was slower so the words and diction were more clear from some singers, but the narrator was to draw the audience in with her story, but often wasn't even close to the character needing the audience's attention making it hard to focus on the story being told. She is supposed to be the star, but missed her opportunity to really interact with the cast and help the audience be drawn in to each song. Maybe if she was dressed in appropriate timely attire, she would look more like she fit in to the story. And the Calypso song\u2026..where were the limbo lines? where were the fruit stacked head dresses? and the man singing was the hardest to understand all night. I can't say enough about how minimalistic the props and costumes were - no baskets of bread, no ears of corn, no french berets, no Caribbean attire, no harem outfits, no burly guards dragging Joseph to the King (he walks himself?) etc\u2026. A digital image does not replace these by any means. And how many times can the cast run up and down a set of stairs? There seemed to be absolutely no creativity. Loosely covered burlap boxes might even look more like an arid desert than a set of wooden stairs. Even if these set and costume changes took more time, at least it would have made the show more interesting. We are also very surprised that the audience would give a standing ovation for such a poor performance. It is not an obligation to stand unless one feels it was the best show seen by them. This was nothing close to the best if you have seen the show before!! I do hope Memphis puts aside their polite Southern ways and gives a more honest evaluation the next time. It truly was a very disappointing performance overall. Orpheum Memphis wants people to pay their prices (which are even higher than Dallas theater) but brings in a show that is mediocre at best?? It will be a while before this family spends that kind of money at your theater again. Please set the bar higher - there are so many great traveling groups out there. Be discriminatory and realize the better the cast and performance, the better the audience draw. Memphis deserves better than this!

The play was phenomenal. The costumes were colorful and the actors/dancers had this energized air and played all of their parts well. The brothers of Joseph did a great job and the pharaoh was hilarious. The play made me laugh and see Joseph's pain of betrayl as well as his joy in being reunited. This play does deviate some from the Bible but it's a great way to give an introduction to Christianity to someone or just to see it for fun.

We went to see Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Orpheum this evening. It was a solid performance. Diana DeGarmo is a good narrator. Her high point was the first part of Act II, Pharaoh's Story. Young gives a good performance too, but I I thought he tried too hard to be Donnie Osmond. He has a great voice, and I would have liked to see his own spin on the character. The brothers did an excellent job. The song, Those Canaan Days, was original, engaging, and entertaining. William Thomas Evans does double duty as Jacob and Potiphar very successfully. However, without a doubt it was Ryan Williams who stole the show as Pharaoh. Perhaps because Memphis was the home town of Elvis, but Williams played right into the crowd like butter. He has an excellent set of pipes and he is both charismatic and likable. Anyone who would like to see this play should go--you won't regret this memorable story with brilliant song lyrics and music by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Theos play was better than expected and I expected a lot. It was updated, but kept the integrity of the original. There wasn't a dull moment through the entire show. Great songs, great dance numbers and even an little homage to Elvis. The two leads were fantastic. If you have the opportunity to see this production, don't hesitate....GO! You will not be sorry. We walked away with a smile on our face and very entertained. Great job.

I've seen A LOT of musicals and plays but this is the first time I've seen Joseph and it was fabulous. It incorporates a lot of different themes of music and the cast touring with it is amazing. They're all so interactive on stage, and off! If you have the chance to stand by the stage door after the show, they come out to meet anyone and everyone! Ace, Diana, Brandon, they're all perfect!

Excellent! I've seen other productions with the children's choir and I liked this one too..... hard to say which was my favorite. Music, vocals, dancing, acting all great. Only suggestion is those in our group could not understand the words to the pharoh/Elvis production which was a shame because I know the lyrics are clever and catchy.

The show was amazing. The music was fantastic and well performed. However, the scenery or backdrop was way too stark and unimaginative. Although there was comedy sometimes the "schitk" was too much (like Jacob's apron at the table scene). Poor choice of actor for Pharoah - too skinny to be considered like Elvis. The scene with Potiphers wife and Joseph was too graphic and suggests sex between them actually happened. Still, despite that I found the show excellent because the actors/singing was superb!

Wonderful production. I've seen Joseph numerous times and have been in the production a couple as well, and this production was well worth the price. Great use of minimal sets, some wonderful updates and changes I'd never seen before. Joseph had a very good voice and did a wonderful job. But for me the number of the show was Canaan Days...wonderfully fun vocal updates and choreography made the number the highlight of the show.

From the first song I was engrossed. The songs were up lifting and engaging. I wanted the singing to just keep on and never stop. I was elated, energized, light hearted, laughing and just felt good. The narrator and Joseph were superb. I have seen this twice before in different venues. The staging, lighting, set design were amazing and timely. I wish they had made a CD of the songs as this would have been one that I would replay constantly. There were many young kids there that had never seen this and I know they loved it. How could you not. You had to be dead to not have let this production permeate your soul. Good job everyone! I had a smashingly grand day myself.

I thought Joseph and Potiphar were good, not great. We had a fill-in for the narrator on 3-31-16 and she had a very unpleasant voice (i.e. shrill/pitchy) and difficult to understand. I thought the sets/costumes were very minimal/cheap for a Broadway production. I was disappointed that Joseph went under a sheet/bed covering with Potiphar's wife intimating some type of sexual encounter when in fact he was pure in his avoidance of anything improper with her. Thats one of the important parts of this story. I was also disappointed with the Pharaoh as well, not quite up to the standard of a rock-and-roll "King" voice. The music/lyrics for this show carried it, but overall an underwhelming experience for a show I have seen before and this did not live up to my and my wife's expectations as well as two other people we talked to.

I have seen other productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and they were fabulous! This one however was very disappointing. The singing was good, not excellent and the sets were very cheesy. Maybe a low budget production? I would not recommend this particular touring production of this musical. I am actually surprised they are even allowed to perform it like this without a disclosure that is it a different production than the broadway version.

Was very disappointed. Show felt incredibly cheap, as if every corner possible was cut. Orchestra has been stripped down to basically a small combo with no brass, just a violin for strings, 1 reed, bass, guitar, drums and 3 keyboards to try and replace the missing instruments. No children....how do you remove the children from the show?!? "Close Every Door" was emotionless and empty without the children. Set consisted of an empty stage, some curtains and the occasional use of some rehearsal blocks, a couple pieces of plywood and 3 sets of stairs . Projections were used to "replace" the set and the effect was dismal, with the exception of the finale. Cast was "OK", with the brothers up-staging the rest of the cast more than once.

Have seen Joseph in all kinds of productions and this non-equity production barely reached community theater level. Minimalist set, uninspired lead, shrill narrator. There were some excellent dancers though. This was a birthday gift for my adult daughter (who has some professional theater experience including a production of Joseph) and she was very disappointed in this production. Usually the great songs make up for a lot of other faults but they tried to put their own spin on the music as well. There seemed to be lots of families with children who enjoyed it , including the family with 3 (not very little) kids right in front of us who paid for individual seats but sat on mom and dad's laps to watch the play - we had trouble seeing around multiple, higher-than-usual heads. All in all, spent far too much money on tickets for this below average play.

Now, don't jump to conclusions: there were some great moments in this production of Joseph. "One More Angel in Heaven" was strong, and "Those Canaan Days" was an extended, fun showcase for the performers. A friend I ran into loved the "Benjamin Calypso." And the dancing was energetic, athletic, and tight. But the tone for the night was set by the lame reliance on desert scenes projected on scrims to establish locale (because, for me, one of the most exciting parts of live theater is seeing how creatively the set itself will convey information, and these projections were as disappointing as an action movie shot in front of a green screen), and then cemented when the Narrator skipped "Any Dream Will Do" (the song whose reprise brings the entire production full circle) and plowed right into "Jacob and Sons." I was surprised at how universally dismayed the audience was by the choice of white costumes for " Go, Go, Go Joseph," but even if you'd never SEEN the production before, this just FELT wrong. The go-go style music simply begs for colorful costumes. The cast was serviceable but young. This was especially apparent in Joseph's scene with Pharaoh. If we're to believe that "When Pharaoh's around, then you get down on the ground," we need a Pharaoh who doesn't look like he should be carded. This "Joseph" knew that we already knew the songs, and knew that we were here for the songs, and knew that it could get by on the cheap with the rest.

I have seen better productions including voices, costumes, sets, choreography in community and high school performances, compared to this production. Joseph and Potiphar provided, and a couple of the dance scenes were entertaining, but far more shortcomings then enjoyment. Shea Gomez couldn't stay on key through most of her performance. The sets were almost nonexistent, as if a trip to Home Depot for moveable boards, one set of stairs met their low budget set. Use of lighting on the curtains, clothing did not add to the performance, again rang out low budget. No wonder, awe, or delight in watching this. I brought a friend visiting from out of state, and told her I thought the next scenes would offer more, wrong. They even changed the story, not having Joseph flee Potiphar's wife, but ended up under the sheets together. I will stick with productions that really deliver, and offer a great thatre experience.

I was not impressed with the costumes or the sets. We had a fill-in for the narrator and her voice was very unpleasant (i.e. shrill/abrasive) and she was difficult to understand. I thought Joseph and Potiphar were good, not great. The quality of the material carried the show, but it certainly was not what it could or should have been for a Broadway Show. I have seen this presented at a high school with the quality of some of the singing, staging and outfits more impressive than here. The Pharaoh again was good, but should have been much better, in regards to his voice and the "Elvis" style singing.

This was an exellent play that has lot of energy and flows really well. All the musical numbers were outstanding. The person singing the role of "Narrrator" seemed to be a bit unusually loud at times (that could have been the level on her mic), but she had a powerful and clear voice. Set - 4.8 Sound - 4.4 - The Tues show had a stoppage right after the opening song following intermission. It was clear something was wrong with the sound system and they worked furiously on it for 20 min and saved the 2nd half of the show, for which we were grateful. I wondered afterward if what I felt was missing in the lead voices during the first half of the show was due to a gliche in the sound system. Dancers - 5 Reuben and Canan Days scene - 5 Benjamin Calypso - 4.9 Staging - 4.7 Pharoah - 4.8 - Wanted to see Pharoah come in on a motorcycle or make some other totally outrageous entry. Close every Door to Me - 4.2 - did not have the power it should have had. At that point the show needs to tap into the power of Israel's Covenant with God and it missed. It did not acknowledge that Joseph's staying power while in prison came from his heritage. This is where the slapstick, stereotyped nonesensical fun needed to stop and become something more profound (than it did) for a moment. Jacob - 3.5 Jacob doesn't work as a skinny short guy who teeters. And none of his wives were young enough to look like his daughters. The show made him look like a tottering Hugh Hefner. Joseph - 4.5 - Needed a stronger voice with better range and needed a broader set of physical actions/reactions onstage - Great physical specimen, but the voice and acting became predictable. Narrator - 4.7 - Needed a stronger, richer voice - hers is beautiful, but topped out and thinned out in the powerful places Potiphar - 4.5 - I think this Potiphar could have been great, but was staged and directed poorly. He has the persona to do the part justice, but I don't think his talents were optimized. Was disappointed to see Joseph get into Potiphar's bed. Not necessary. P's wife could have just pulled off his vest, as in the story text. That said, the actual come-on dance and costuming with Potiphar's wife and Joseph was very well done. The recap production number at the end was awesome.

The play was everything that I expected and more. The acting and choreography was superb and the singing was spot on. I brought my whole family and everyone was really impressed. the eleven year old boy was singing the songs for days afterwards and that is unusual for him. even with the technical difficulties after the intermission it was worth the small inconvenience. Wonderful production.

Those Canaan Days was a high point with a unique twist on the "cup stacking" rhythmic romp on the dinner table - like Canaan got a visit from "Stomp". It was a nice variation on the predictable story. Of course, Pharaoh never disappoints. The projections were beautiful, and the use of the white costumes and sheep to project on were clever.

This production was by far the best live production of Joseph I have seen! I have seen two other live performances, and participated in a live performance myself (ensemble), and without a doubt, this was the absolute best. JC McCann stole the show (as he should as the lead), but there was no doubt of his talent once he sang "Close Every Door to Me" and his voice was more powerful than the orchestra! (And what an orchestra!) Kudos, Mr. McCann! The only distraction was Laura Helm as the Narrator, who has a lovely voice, but at times sounded like she was screaming instead of singing. But not enough of a distraction to lower my rating. Joe Ventricelli embodied the Pharoah as Sir Rice and Mr. Webber intended. The rest of the cast were also perfectly cast. I highly recommend to all that if you get a chance to see this production to do so.

The bar was pretty high for this show. I have seen Jo a few times with Michael Damian and Donny Osmond. And while this was a traveling show, it still held up well with a diverse and talented cast. I was pleased to see the minor updates that had been added. Although a few of the changes were a little cheesy (Jacob's apron and his emoting was a bit much for me). The lead is this traveling show really did a fantastic job. I was impressed with his vocals and acting. The narrator started out great, but her voice trailed off and became a little shrill in the second act. Pharaoh is a great role in this play, but the actor didn't seem to fully capture the Elvis persona. All-in-all, if you like Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice you'll like the show. I did.

I thoroughly enjoyed the score and the choreography. I have seen this show once before and by far this one was the best. Truth be told, Donny Osmond set the bar for Joseph and I'm happy to report your Joseph with this show set a new bar!!!

This was by far a Broadway caliber production!!!!!!!!. Cast was extremely talented both as singers, dancers, actors. You would have thought this was their opening show of the tour with the amount of enthusiasm and energy they put out on that stage. Never before seeing this musical before I did not know what to expect and I am so glad that I did. The show is so entertaining and at times pretty funny. DON'T MISS IT!!! Thank you to this cast for such an entertaining evening.

So disappointed. Spent alot of money for good seats. This production was lackluster. Scenery was dreary, not colorful. Choreography was lame. Didnt seem like dancers were in sync with each other. The entire performance was dull. Performers also had to move platforms while dancing. This was obviously scaled way down from its potential. Even local community theatre has produced a better presentation. I actually read poor reviews in the newspaper, but was hoping they were not so. I really hope the producers reconsider and build this back up.

Narrator voice was piercing, often couldn't understand the words of the songs (sound system issues maybe), best singers were the lead Joseph and Joseph's brothers. Loved the video with Donnie Osmond. This version was adapted to be much more modern and I didn't care for it.

I have seen this play many times in many different venues. I saw it three times with Donny, I've seen a couple of different productions at the Chanhassen Theatre, and I've seen it at various high schools. This production was not very good. The lead singer most definitely hit some off key notes and really fell flat in the energy department. The sets were almost non-existent, and the costumes were colorless and boring. The choreography was very restrained as well, except for when Joseph's brothers did their numbers, they were great! On the plus side, the orchestra was awesome, the narrator was pretty good, and the brothers had awesome voices, energy, humor, and their dancing/gymnastics were wonderful. I, and the friend I went with, thought that a production of this caliber and price tag should have been much better. I would not recommend this touring company.

This is my all-time favorite musical and I have lost count of the number of times I have seen it. Unfortunately, I have to say that this was my least favorite production of it that I have seen. Considering that we traveled 5+ hours specifically to see it and the amount of money we paid for tickets, I was so disappointed! The whole thing felt very low budget. The narrator, however, was amazing!

After seeing this production done in many venues by High School, civic theater, and many professional groups; every one is different in it's own way. All very good! This one was updated a bit by the actors which was good. The scene with the brothers at the table singing about the loss of Joe with Jacob coming in was a highlight!! Never seen it done like that before. I thought Joseph was a bit weak in his performance. Singing mainly! The cast was great and the show moved along very well.

I have seen this play 4 times over the past 40 years and each time is just a wonderful enjoyment because the cast members seem to express their parts differently but enjoyable. This production was no less an experience for being the 4th time i saw it. The beginning and ending was completely different - a bit hard to pick up on the characters protrayed in the story line. the story, songs and music were the same in each production seen. An absolute must to see this play! You will have a wonderful experience if it is a first time, and an amazing experience for those return audience members!

This is a great production of Joseph. I would imagine those who have seen the Donny Osmond musical will wonder if this tour is going to live up to the Broadway version. It does. The cast is perfect. I've seen it twice now (Rockford and Joliet) and I would go again.

Seen this show several times, several venues. Fox in Detroit always great venue. Touring show this time was less than impressive. The two leads, Joseph and the Narrator, while quality singers, don't have the Broadway show presence. The new choreography takes the campy just a but to far to being on the verge of childish. Fine line to tread, but it was missed. The audio level was also too low. We both commented that it seemed as if the outside banks of speakers were not active and we were only getting the center channel. should not be having trouble understanding dialog in the middle of the floor seats.

I enjoyed the play, but was highly disappointed in the director's choice to have Joseph succumb to the seducing temptations of Potiphar's wife. Joseph is and always has been a shining example to the world of resisting evil temptations. The Bible states, "she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out" (Genesis 39:12). It was saddening to see so much work and talent go into a production that didn't stay true to the real characters. An immoral Joseph just didn't set well with me the rest of the play. I would have recommended it to others if I knew I could trust the plot to reflect my respect for Joseph and his courage and determination to not "do this great wickedness, and sin against God" (Genesis 39:9).

I saw this show many years ago when Donny Osmond played Joseph. I fell in love with it then and was excited to hear it would be in Detroit. Our crowd varied in age from 5 years old to 70 years old and it had a little something for everyone. My 7 year old son said he "loved it!" There was one scene that was inappropriate for the little ones, but I don't think they understood it anyway.

Regretted
I wanted to bring my family to a show with a biblical theme for a night of wholesome entertainment. This show was over sexual in both dress and dance. Neither represented contextual accuracy. I did expect some suggestive content for the scene with Potiphar's wife although I expected it to be conveyed without gratuitous sensuality. It wasn't even accurate as the show depicted them frolicking in bed under the covers when in reality Joseph resisted her advances as a man of principle and faith. The bottom line is that a story of faith, high morals, courage and redemption was cheapened and perverted by the theatrical script, music and choreography. Even the levity was over done and trivialized what should have been serious and contemplative moments. We left at intermission to preserve our Christian scruples and standards. The quality of the cast was very good in vocals, acting, etc. My complaints are entirely with the screenplay.
