Benji Hughes
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Benji Hughes has collaborated with big names like Jeff Bridges and Michelle Ndegeocello, but lately it’s his evocative solo work that fans are flocking to. The introspective singer’s sparse piano arrangements, subdued vocals, and winding melodies evoke the work of beloved songsmiths like Jon Bryan, but weird-wonderful tunes like “Girl in the Tower” and “How Many Birds” have ensconced Hughes in a camp of his own. Hughes released four – yes FOUR – albums in 2014 including a children’s concept album set in outer space, so ticket buyers can look forward to plenty of new material as he hits the road on tour...

I am a huge fan of Benji's new album, Songs In The Key Of Animals, but I think his live style hasn't caught up yet. For the cons, he only performed two songs from the new album and one of them was distinctly under-rehearsed. Also a trio of guitar-bass-drums was the bare minimum required to bring his songs to life. The guitarist was very good but there were a few too many solos, which was ironic as there is not ONE guitar solo on the new record. That all said, the band rocked and Benji is an amazing vocalist with an engaging and wacked out stage persona. Fun, funny and a lot of heart. But it could have been so much more.
