My friend and I took the subway from Penn but were way too early, luckily the guys working the door were kind enough to redirect us to nearby cafe so we didn't freeze outside. We got in and up to the stage (as in leaning on the edge of the stage) and the show was amazing.

Murder By Death was awesome! While I wished they would have played a bit longer than they had, they were absolutely amazing, as always. I've seen them several times and they always put on a great show. I can't wait until they come around again!

When it comes to most shows, I hate going alone. It's just a more enjoyable activity having a buddy with you to banter with. Luckily for me I had 3 cohorts at my side enjoying the show. But if it wasn't for them, I would have not felt their absence. There is a sense of comradery within the sea of fans that travel to see the quartet rock out. Several times throughout the show I had guys put their arms around my neck and bellow out the lyrics with me. It didn't matter that we were strangers and this might come off as weird in a different setting. At that moment, it was amazing and felt right. I tossed my arm around their necks and screamed even louder. We were brothers in arms. Identifying with the songs that were sung and enjoying the hell out of them. The setlist was tight. The performance was grand. It was a great expeirence and I look forward to the next time they'll be back in town.

If you've never seen or heard of Murder By Death; get thee to a media site and take a listen. The powerful, heart rending dark ballads belted out by the lead singer leave you in a nostalgia of the crooning of Johny Cash while not subverting your inner metal. To see them in action is be put into awe that such a powerful sound reverberates from the vocal chords of such an unlikely looking character. The audiences, since the band is relatively underground, are chock-full of fans of the bands; and to be there as everyone breaks out into singing along with songs you thought you were the only one who knew creates even more waves of awe. The combination of rock and folk with the eerie cello and percussion effects draws you into their melodies and into the rich stories that both songs and albums tell. You'll be wondering what life the writer has envisioned for the subject singing through his songs, you'll want to know the stories or find yourself daydreaming what they may be. Catch this band; follow them- they are awesome. Paired with the Amazing talents in this tour with Buried Beds and Fake Problems; they prime you for the fantastical world of the story-album; get you into the swinging mood and then unleash your fervor for the main event. Good Tour, Excellent music~

That was the best combination of 3 bands we'd ever seen. A new band to us, Damion Suomi and the Minor Prophets were absolutely amazing and we can't wait to see them again in April. As big fans of Murder by Death they did not disappoint on delivering a memorable and very fun show. Thank you!

This was my second time seeing Murder by Death, and The Builders and the Butchers in the same show. They put on such a great show! Both these bands are ones that I will make a point of seeing any time they are in town. I have listened to Murder by Death recordings and they are very good, but hearing them live is so much better! All the recordings do not bring out the amazing talent of the female electric cello player as well as a live show do. She is so talented, and live shows really display her talent. The whole band is great... the lead singer has such a great voice, with the energy to fully display the depth of the lyrics. I have seen The Builders and the Butchers at least five times now... and their shows never let you down. They have a great energy to them, and have a talent for making the audience a part of the show. Both bands independently are more than worth seeing... together they are phenomenal.

I've seen MBD before in a crappy club and they managed to sound great as well as put on a tier 1 show, but on New Year's Eve all the bands had very flat handling from the sound crew. I believe my sentiment is even reflected in their choice of openers being extremely easy to handle. The first group was Baiowolf (spelling?) which consisted of two gurus rapping nerd-core against glitch (think Mario bros.) music. Immediately the smaller of the front men ripped his pants off and stated, "I've heard you should be the change you want to see in the world. Well... I just took my pants off!" Meanwhile three burlesque dancers shimmied up on the stage while the rappers danced around wildly in the crowd. I noticed many people were smug about their raunchy humor, and they were the kind of people you would call fun haters just by looking at them. Widespread smiles and white dancing commenced as they screamed something like "Girlfriends!!! They're for pussies!" The next two bands were trance rock bands with no singers, Mansion and Black Xmas. A few of the members of Mansion seemed unenthusiastic but I feel they were intimidated by the large crowd that gathered to see MBD. The drummer and bassist were very solid players. They played a single "song" that lasted 21 minutes. A slow motion video of Micheal Jordan played in the background and that augmented the experience. Black Xmas had very talented guitarists and a solid bassist that had a player's attitude - that he had done this plenty of times before. His bass tones were great even as he used some texture effects that sometimes hamper bass tone. However the guitarist on the right had his amp cranked and the mid highs literally damaged my hearing (I play live and I know when you are hurting your ears). MBD came out on stage and Adam was in a white suit that made you think speakeasy or Columbian Drug lord. The cellist was dressed beautifully in a red dress with matching lipstick - her look only magnifies her outstanding musicianship. I believe she is a lot of the heart of their sound. The first song sounded rather good, but Adam's voice dropped in volume and even people far behind the mains stated he was muffled throughout the night. The crowd knew all the lyrics and Adam sang loud enough you could hear his voice on its own. Of course their bassist was very solid and musical. This band is getting to the point that they can't play all the songs that you like, so the double encore of Fuego and Ash was very very nice. It was a great experience even with the shoddy sound, and could have been one of those special concerts but the two trance-rock bands were uninspiring in the light of Baiowolf and Murder by Death.

I've seen murder by death seven times. And like the other six, the show on Sunday was fantastic. Their stage presence is great, a good mix of stand by's and their new album played and of course the venue was good. Waterstreet is good for an intimate feeling show. It was worth my hour drive from Buffalo.

I was disappointed with their performance. They played a bunch of songs I wanted to hear, I was just not pleased with their energy. It seemed like they were tired and had already played for many hours. The singer was not enthusiastic or genuinely interested in the audience. Wasn't entertained and would rather have been at another show.

I was excited to see Murder by Death in a small place as Record Bar, the crowd was very enthusiastic & maybe I'm old but it was booked in too small of a space or overbooked. It's tough to see for short folks and the entire floor was like a passive aggressive mosh pit. Just a strange atmosphere for such a pseudo-mellow group. I do love the Record Bar and see lots of great local shows there. The staff was exceedingly friendly! Both acts put forth five star performances however and the sound was mixed very well.

When Murder by Death got on stage, the nick finally kicked off. Their sound, their stage presence, their interaction with the crowd....always one of my favorites to see. However, their opening band *sucked*, and the music took *forever* to finally get going. It was implied that music started at 8, but no, doors at 8, music at 9:20.

The setlists stay fresh with a healthy mix of old and new songs, and they even throw a wild card into the mix with either an unexpected cover song or a brand new piece that hasn't been released yet; every show is different. They aren't shy with the crowd either; they're always around to talk with before or after a show (sometimes during) and their travel stories are definitely worth hearing. For a band known for their expertise in the field of "poor bastard" songs, they're a cheerful and memorable group to see and to speak with.

Let's get this out there ; I was there for Murder By Death, having never heard of Samantha Crain nor Man Man. Samantha Crain was great- passionate, beautiful voice and an adorable personality. Man-Man--- not my type of music- at all. We waited in the lounge for them to finish, had a few drinks, and went back into the club when they were done. My only complaint about the MBD set was the audience- there were some very, very drunk folks who insisted upon moshing even to the slower songs, threw everyone around and made a general mess of things- I really wished that bouncers had tossed these folks out, or at the very least talked to them and calmed them down. It really did detract from the show for me. As far as MBD's performance- what can I say? It was my first time seeing them live after having missed their July show in boston, and it will absolutely not be my last. Adam Turla's voice is just as good as on the albums, Sarah's cello-playing is phenomenal, and their passion as a band is very real and very noticeable. I wished they'd played a few more of my favorites , but I was seriously happy that they did my favorites from their new album - Lost River, My Hill, Hard World, and Straight at the Sun for one of their 2 encore songs. I'm not a fan of the Paradise in general, but i'd easily go back again to see them.

Awesome stage presence. Played a great mix of new and old songs--especially some of my favorite older songs they haven't played in a while like The Desert is on Fire. The Theramin was pretty freaking legit as was the accordion. Loved it. I will always go see MBD when they are home!!!

Adam Turla kept thanking the crowd for "allowing" them to try out their new songs, but he might as well have said, "Thank you all for allowing us to continue making mind-blowingly great music for you!" Third time seeing this band and it definitely won't be the last.

This was my first time seeing Murder by Deth play...and man it was waaaay better than I expected. If you haven't already seen them play, I highly recommend you do. They bring out a lot of energy while they play. The fact that it was at el Rey theater made it very cozy and personal...I was with my friend up close near the stage and it was pretty intense! Everyone was singing along, dancing, and getting a lil rowdy even with a couple of songs (but it was all in good nature).

By the size of the venue, Murder by Death is getting more popular but they're still not half as popular as they deserve to be. The tickets were dirt cheap, especially considering that their opener - Ha Ha Tonka - has headlined before. If there was one gripe about the music it's that the openers came in the wrong order. Ha Ha Tonka was by far the better and should have gone on second. At least I had time to get a few drinks in me for the second act. The music was amazing and I'd go anywhere to see it, but I hope they pick a different venue next time. The drinks were overpriced and designed to trick the unwary customer (they quoted us $9 for an 18oz and $14 for a 24oz beer. I'll wait. The signs said $9 and $13 respectively). One of the best parts about seeing these groups is chatting with them afterwards. However, within about five minutes of the show's end, the staff began hustling people out the front door, even in the middle of getting things signed by the band members. There's a definite disconnect here.

I'd normally give MBD 10 stars on a scale of 5 . They're awesome by far one of the best bands making music right now and they perform like they enjoy it though I'm sure it becomes a grind from time to time. Adam was on point and very funny. The new songs were a welcome addition to their already fantastic library and got me excited for the new album. However the paradise gets 3 stars for this show. Normally the venue has the balcony open. which would have been nice, also they had a blown speaker which popped and crackled all night.

These guys, and gal, put on such an amazing live show. I've been watching them for nearly a decade and can't get over how a band can be so great at what they do, so remarkably friendly and approachable, and just be so damned cool while they do it that they haven't yet exploded in the music scene.
