Pixies

PIXIES IN CONCERT:With hundreds of mind-blowing shows under their belts going back to the '80s, Pixies remain an unstoppable force of alt rock. From Black Francis' shrieking vocals to Joey Santiago's angular ferocity on the guitar, the sonic greatness of their performances have made the chance to see them live one of indie rock's holiest grails. With Indie Cindy — the band's first new full-length since 1991 — hitting shelves in early 2014, Pixies are set to tour and take the world by storm, yet again. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Formed outside of Boston in 1986, Pixies consists of founders Black Francis, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering.

Big Hollywood fun. Orwell s are always fun. Eagles of death metal are ironic and campy. Pixies are legends.

I was so excited to finally get to see the Pixies. Unfortunately the show was a big letdown. The music was way too loud and the mix was terrible (at least in the balcony). The Pixies just went from song to song and never connected with the audience. Many of their songs were of the "hard to listen to" variety with dissonant chords. The rabid fans didn't seem to care and thoroughly enjoyed it. Once "Here Comes Your Man" and Motorway to Roswell" were played, we were outta there!

Seeing the for the first time the last rock band I've loved since high school (2002-2006) was sentimental, and is definitively the last rock concert that I will love going to in that special teenager adolescent way. I called the double encore Caribou as the closer on the BART ride to the theater, and while I got less sleep than I normally would have liked to on a school night. Some things in life are more important than school. The only thing missing from the night were my godbrothers who introduced the Pixies and Doolittle to me. God bless you Phil and Sam.

Saw the Pixies last night at Fox Theater in Oakland. They were just amazing. I missed them in their prime in the early 90's and felt lucky to see this reunion show in honor of Doolittle. However, the Oakland-Bay Area crowd was ridiculous! We had assigned seat tickets in the theater got yelled at to sit down. Rudely, the guy behind us started throwing things at us yelling that he paid a lot of money for his tcikets and wanted to see. I am sorry, but hello? its a PIXIES show!!!! I am old enough to have enjoyed the Pixies in their prime, but not too old to enjoy live music the proper way. Its not the Opera people. Bottom line: Pixies still rock, Oakland fans do not!

Seeing the Pixies live in concert is a rock event equivalent to Haley's Comet or a lunar eclipse -- something that you can't ignore and you're lucky to take part in. This legendary band rocked the Fox theater and, despite my exclusive rights to be in the Visa Signature space, was just too far back to totally enjoy the band. So I abandoned that spot and I squeezed up to the front of the stage (sorry to the guy who didn't want me to get past him and spilled his beer trying to hold his spot & thanks for the push that got me past two more rows of people), and found that the front was plenty roomy & fun to dance and be a part of the show. It was a trip back in time, and a welcome respite from all that's changed since the late 80's.

This was fairly disappointing. The sound was really bad, but it was much better on the floor than in the Mezzanine. They opened up with shots from a Bunuel film. Not too much energy there, Kim Deal was the only one who seemed like she really cared. I saw Devo in the same weekend, and they were so great, this was pretty lame in comparison. Too bad, because I really like the record.

Fantastic show! They started with some B-sides, then played the whole Doolittle album, and then finished with some classics. The only thing that I didn't like was that they were done in 1.5 hours. Seemed a bit short.

23 years ago I saw my first PIXIES concert @ now defunct Rocky Point Palladium in Warwick, Rhode Island. One of my favorite bands ever since. Thrilled to see they have not missed a beat... just as "thunderous" as ever! "Planet of Sound" indeed! Enjoyed shows 2x this past week, @Strathmore, Bethesda, Maryland and in Richmond, Virginia, The National.

A bi-generational crowd of Gen-X and Gen-Y'ers packed The National to see the Pixies in Richmond Wednesday night. Black, Joey, Dave and (now) Paz were in classic form as they played a 30 song set in the intimate venue. The sound production was terrific - powerful, clear, and full - which gave them the space to express the full dynamic range of their catalogue. Songs from their new EPs like Indie Cindy and Greens & Blues were seamlessly interwoven into classics like Gouge Away and Where Is My Mind. The rest of the country are in for a treat as they complete their North American tour through February.

I honestly can't remember the last time I went to see a show where the band was quote on quote "legendary" where I wasn't disappointed. Soundgarden? Nope. Prince? Uh uh. Dylan? Oh please. But when the Pixies took the stage in Newark I knew I was witnessing something truly special. I've always liked Black Francis, even Frank Black and his band of merry pranksters. But this show made me fall in love with them all over again. I haven't stopped listening to them on my iPod since. And can't say enough about how special a venue NJPAC is. Really warrants a visit. Classy joint with excellent acoustics. And an easy Path train and Light Rail commute away from midtown Manhattan. They played all their best stuff. Songs from Doolittle, Surfer Rosa, Bossanova, and a few new ones recently released in EP form. What I loved best is their lack of between song banter like so many other performers feel the need to do. They're approach was to STAND AND DELIVER which they did in spades. Speaking volumes through his music is what Black Francis has always excelled at. Even the opening band Fidlar was good. Nice setup for the main event. If you haven't seen them yet, beg steal or borrow to get a ticket. Or you'll be sorry you didn't.

I ve been a fan since '91, saw them again in 2004. The Pixies are right now at the top of their craft: the sound is as rich and meticulous as always. Lovering is a true master with the drums, Santiago lives up to his fame as one of the greatest, understated guitar players in history, and Charles, well, his screams are as beautiful as ever. Paz was exceptional, and although I hope Kim Deal will reconsider re-joining the band (BTW she posted some really nice pieces lately in her website), I feel Paz is a real professional with the potential to contribute a fitting presence with an invigorating musical view. I suggest to the readers to search for the Pixies live performance in WXPN that same evening (WXPN site and youtube), to listen what she did with her violin in songs like Caribou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzQFEtz4B7Q). Finally the new songs, are very good. Unmistakably Pixies. Like amazing B-sides of old, only new. Somehow I feel they can break new ground again, in the near future. Why? because hearing them and seeing them I realized they are having as much fun as ever. Just go and see for your self.

The Pixies began a new chapter in their storied history Monday night when they opened their 2013 world tour at the El-Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. Playing the first official night with new band member Kim Shattuck on bass, the Pixies ripped through a 26 song set in 75 minutes. The crowd of predominantly 40 and 50-somethings, were chomping at the bit as the line to get in wrapped around the art deco building at least an hour before doors. Prior to opening act Meg Myers taking the stage, the venue was at capacity as everyone staked a claim to their spot. The Pixies set included a nice mix of new music, classic set staples, and few surprises. The underrated 1991 LP Trompe Le Monde, placed five songs in the set that included The Jesus and Mary Chain cover "Head On" and the rare "Distance Equals Rate Times Time." The classic indie rockers played two songs off the recently dropped EP-1, "Another Toe In The Ocean" and "What Goes Boom." Charles and company opened with a cover of The Fall's "Big New Prinz." From the get-go Ms. Shattuck had a bounce in her step and at times was a little chatterbox. However, at no time did she engage in dialogue with Charles, unlike old Kim's routine. Many of the same classic Pixies tunes that at we have become accustomed to hearing at shows since they began touring again in 2004 made the setlist, such as crowd pleasing sing-a-longs "Hey" and "Gouge Away." The band closed the set with "Planet Of Sound" and from that moment on... a delightful night out with the new-look Pixies took a bizarre turn for the worse. Frontman Frank Black waved to the crowd and gave a thank you gesture as the band left the stage. After a few minutes of nonstop cheering and yelling, all while we watched the equipment being put into place for the encore.....NOTHING. After about ten minutes the stage lights went on and David Bowie's "Heroes" began to play as the crowd started the chant "One More Song, One More Song." Roughly after fifteen minutes, it became apparent that they were done (for whatever reason), leaving the three song scheduled encore aborted. Unfortunately, cheers turned boos and smiles turned to confused looks. We'll never know why we were short changed out of hearing them play "Andro Queen" live for the first time ever, as well as the classic "Where Is My Mind?" and the one I was looking forward to, "Indie Cindy." Monday was the first of four nights in Los Angeles. This weekend the Pixies will perform at Riot Fest in Chicago along with The Replacements. GoINDEEpMusic

As one of my favorite bands, I was thrilled to see them come to Memphis on tour. I had my girlfriend watch their documentary, LoudQuietLoud, so she could be better prepared. We both could not believe how awesome the show was and we loved the fact that they played Doolittle in order from start to finish as part of their setlist!!

It was easy to see why the Pixies influenced anyone and everyone I respect musically after seeing them live at the Palace in Louisville. We came from St. Louis since they always leave our city out of their tours, but it was well worth the trip. Opening with some b-sides off of the early 4AD demos, among others, they eventually settled into Doolittle, which gave each and every track on the record the credibility of one of the greatest "rock" albums every created. It had beauty, anger, mystery, pop and a sonic-aura that took you on a ride you could have only achieved by listening to the album for the very first time back when it was released. After the album came everything else we wanted to hear, including Wave of Mutilation, Nimrod's Son, Isla De Encanta, Vamos and the most stunning rendition of Where is My Mind I could have ever hoped for. During the first encore, when they performed Into the White, the smoke machines filled the entire theater with smoke, and the video wall and lighting appeared to replicate the most beautiful indoor thunderstorm you could ever imagine, probably a highlight of the show. After the song, many appeared to be hypnotized until the next encore began. The Louisville crowd was on fire, everyone was yelling and screaming louder than I have ever heard. Great venue, great crowd, phenomenal show. One of my lifetime's musical highlights.

This was truly a great show and the Pixies were as good this time playing Dolittle as the did during original tour ( maybe better as the air between members was not as tense as back then ) My wife and unborn baby boy had a blast as she couldn't sit still and her belly felt like he was dancing like mad. I do agree with many other posts though and would love for them to collaborate and cut some new material. If finances and circumstances could provide I would see them again and again.

I have been waiting to see The Pixies since I first heard them at 16, that was almost 24 years ago. Anytime they played I missed it, then they split up. I was very happy about getting my tickets and had been preparing since summer to go. Of course, then Mother Nature had something to say and sent us the worse snowstorm in October, ever! We had no power and our sitter cancelled. We tried every available avenue but everyone was in the same situation. Our solution? We packed the car full of toys and DVDs and headed over with our daughter in the car. We took it in turn to go in and had a BLAST! The Pixies were great, just as I knew they would be. My daughter watched a movie then crashed out in the car and was excited to have had an adventure. It was not ideal but it was worth it!

It's been 20 years since the Pixies were relevant but they sounded fantastic at the Casino Ballroom Sunday night. No rust at all. The only strange thing was their set list, which consisted of playing the entire album "Doolittle", including B sides, in order. When they ended the show, I thought WTF? Luckily they redeemed themselves by playing most of their other hits during the 2 oncores. A little weird but I left satisfied.

I never thought I would ever be able to have an experience like that. Used to listen to the Pixies a lot so many years ago, and then the band ended and when thay had a comeback tour they were not even close to playing in the city I lived. So yes, it was amazing!!! They played a lot of B-sides and all of the famous most expected ones of course. Kim Deal was the greatest to me. She was all smiles, talking to the audience, and drinking her beer hahaha! One other thing I loved about the concert was that they had a huge screen behind the stage, showing all kinds of images, but the theme of the images changed with every song. So cool! At the end while they were playing Isla De Encanta, the stage got all covered with smoke, you couldn't even see any of them! And also on the first encore they played Wave of Mutilation again but in a different version. Two things I did not exactly enjoy: - The opening band: I think it could have been something with that sounded a little bit more like the Pixies to warm us up, instead there was these 2 guys playing techno music. - During the entire second encore all the lights on the Arena were on. Don't know if this was a request from the band or not but they could have kept the lights off till the end.

Can I get an AMEN????!!!! I'll settle for an OMG; what with the Ryman being hallowed ground (the original site of the Grand Ol' Opry and a former church) and me a lonely pilgrim on the road in Music City! Two consecutive shows at the Ryman to see the Pixies on September 10th and 11th! They opened up with a handful of obscure B-sides before doing DOOLITTLE - their Magnum Opus in it's entirety! From the opening screech of "Debaser" to the ending notes of "Gouge Away ", the Pixies brought their "A Game". Two encores later saw the band dust off a huge chunk of their greatest hits catalogue such as "Vamos"; "Where is My Mind", and a slower version of "Wave of Mutilation" found on a compilation of oddities. One night - they even did their great cover version of Neil Young's "Winterlong"! Their set was augmented by some great video footage of psychedelia and film noir and the heaviest fog machine usage I've ever inhaled for 'Into The White"! Great show! Can't wait to see them in La Jolla on the 26th!

The Pixies played to a sold out crowd at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, which is about 2000 people. The place was packed from end to end with no room to move as more people came in. There were people all the way to the exits. That's most packed I've seen that place. The Pixies came out and started with what they called some "B-Sides" some more rare and obscure than others, but still a good rockin' set of music. Bassist Kim Deal did all the talking for the band who played a pretty tight set of music. After a few songs they kicked in to Doolittle and played the album from cover to cover and even flipped it over when the time came. This was a fantastic set of music that was followed up by a mix of other songs at the end. They rocked it out with two encores and about a 90 minute full set for the fans. This show was well worth seeing and I would recommend it to fans for sure.

You buy your tickets, practically broke. Then you think back to other live concerts and the bands you love that have not given a performance as such that you had hoped for... D-Day arrives, got your tickets, get to the venue on time and the excitement is just beyond normal. Only been here from south Africa for three months and already i get to see a band that we all could only dream of seeing!! The opening act starts, Trans. Really good, except if one opens with a genre like that it needs to be an outside venue where one can actually dance to it... Its not really a sit and watch. Outstanding nonetheless... The act is over... You can see more people filling in the seats now! Then, they open up! Never have i seen a band live that sounded so good on stage! Interaction with the audience was perfect! The choice of stage lights and imagery on backdrop was the best fitted to the songs. This band knows what they are doing! Not one second did i stop watching them! They are truly doing amazing work. All they need now is to visit South Africa ; Johannesburg, Durban and Cape town! All audiences are bound to be fuller than the Ovens was. Great venue the Ovens Auditorium.

This was a sold out Pixies show. I have seen the Pixies perform before and was eagerly anticipating this gig! Cutting to the chase, we ended up leaving before the end of the show. The sound wasn't that great and the Pixies seemed to have no energy and no interaction with their sold out audience. It kind of felt like they were just going through the motions. The bright spot in the evening was the opening act. Sunflower Bean was a high energy fun performance. I had never heard of them before, but still enjoyed their music and their energy. I've seen over 100 concerts over 40+ years and this one will only be remembered for the fire alarm exit. There was no chat from Frank, no distance between songs, no passion, no Los Angeles...no Kim Deal! It was the best one song encore I've ever seen...it smoked as they played 'Into the Light', then there was so much smoke you couldn't see, then the alarm went off. The lights came on and everyone quietly exited. No apologies to the crowd, just a slow exit. Just like this review...

First time seeing the Pixies after liking them for 30 years. They did not let me down. It was the relentless aural assault I was hoping for! BF is still in great form and, while there's no replacing Kim, Paz was very solid. Sunflower Bean opened and were fantastic. They started out as a heavy psychedelic band but have been branching out in other directions - Glam, Americana and Arena Rock are all now strong additions to their eclectic repertoire. Bassist/Frontperson Julia Cumming's vocals are sweet and powerful. She's definitely one of the most exciting new voices in rock.

From the beginning to the end, the Pixies played with unbelievable energy and unending nostalgia. They covered the spectrum of their discography and everyone was rewarded with live versions of the popular favorites from back in the day and outstanding new songs. The resounding examples from Doolittle had the audience singing along at the top of their voices. My personal favorites were the older, more obscure songs which they played with my eternal gratitude, songs such as Ana, Blown Away and Vamos. Hearing Nimrod's Son and Into the White (which was the encore) invigorated my love for the band. My only caveat would be an additional encore. That, and I could have done without the storm that greeted everyone when the show ended. We can't control the weather and we certainly cannot ask for a better show.

The Pixies were amazing and melted all of our collective faces off in New Orleans! I loved Kim Deal but their bassist Paz Lenchantin (formerly of A Perfect Circle) really held her own. She seemed to be playing as an enthusiastic former fan and that helped their sound tremendously!

The Pixies sounded just as amazing and electrifying as they did when I first heard them 25 years ago. Always loved their cool, unique sound. The Stone Pony Summer Stage is an amazing venue to see a band. The setting of the stage against the dusk sky and the cool beach breeze is just all around "feel good..." The crowd was awesome...well-behaved, vintage grups like myself just happy to be reliving our college days...lol All around great night!!

The Masonic Auditorium seating was all GA which worked out great since I got there early enough to snag a great seat. Good venue with no obstructed views. Opening act was fun and funky and the Pixies put on an amazing two hour show and played a well thought out mix of classics and new stuff.

I've been waiting since the late '80's to see the Pixies in concert; I was afraid that the absence of Kim Deal would change the sound of the group, but Paz Lentchanin is PERFECT for the group's energy and sound. Unlike some groups that have been around for 25+ years, Charles can still belt out the lyrics.

Pixies had some great opening acts (Cat Power, Gogol Bordello) that set the mood for a fun night, and Pixies surely didn't disappoint - sounded amazing even with new member.

Excellent show with a very "intimate" feel. Pixies have crashed thru social barriers and have affected so many different types of people, of all ages, and it was good to see that many people pay homage to a band that influence so many bands that are successful today. Been a fan for over 20 years, keep doing it Frank!

Saw them in 2004 and seems like they are getting better with age... I was bummed Kim Deal wasnt gonna be on this tour but the new bassist has a great voice and plays killer bass too and they all are really having fun so hopefully it will mean more new material and tours in the future! Opening band Best Coast surprised me as I had heard them on Youtube and thought they were marginal, but live they are awesome~

The LC Pavalion is a really nice venue. It's easy to get to, close by cheap parking. The place doesn't matter though when it's The Pixies. It was such a treat to be right in front of the magic, they sound so amazing. The band rocked my new favorite song ever Indie Cindy! 2 solid hours of one song after another, not for one second do The Pixies let up, so powerful and simply magic. Possibly the best show Ive ever seen, will ever see.

Black Francis's voice is still as strong as it was in the late 80's. Great power in the entire band and Kim Deal's replacement, Paz Lechantin, gently found a nice fit with the band. They mixed the classics with the new (maybe a little too much new). The set had a few favorites missing but overall a great almost 2 hr set.

Powerful music in a great venue! First time to the Uptown and given the expensive ticket was very pleased with all - staff, seats, acoustics, amenities. I have long adored the Pixies and finally was able to see them and many days later still swimming in the energy of it. Check on the bucket list. And the Orwells were a very good match as a back up band....very solid music and players!

I love the Pixies. They are iconic, but their show left a lot to be desired. Timing was off and they rushed through each song like a waiter aggressively trying to get you to pay your bill so they can go home. They uttered not one word to the audience - not even, It s great to be here, or Thank you Oakland goodnight which could perhaps be forgiven if they didn t forget lyrics and speed through every song.

Amazing set. Fourth time seeing them. During that run of Um Chagga Lagga/Isla de Encanta I lost track of what we were even wailing to. Caribou was transcendent. Subbacutcha felt a little off. It sounded like they weren't playing the main riff, but maybe that was just where I was.

This was my first time seeing the Pixies on their own turf and they didn't disappoint, it was as good and passionate as the many times I have seen them in the UK - even Brixton. A massive 35 song set with a strong bias towards Doolittle but with plenty of classics thrown in from their other albums too. No two Pixies sets are ever the same and it was great to hear some classics that I haven't heard live for some time (Broken Face, Tame, Velouria) and both variants of Wave of Mutilation in a single set is pretty special. A great way for the band to finish this leg of their 2017 tour and I will continue to catch them whenever I can and suggest everyone else does too before they decide to call it a day (which is hopefully many years away)

The event was advertised as starting at 7pm. It should have stated that the doors opened at 7. I rushed like a mad person to get there in time and ended up waiting around forever. I had booked another concert later that evening considering the early start time of this one. The opening act Mitski went on from 8 to 8:30 and by 8:40 they were still setting up for the Pixies. Please do a better job of advertising the actual start time. I am very sad to have missed out. I really liked the venue itself. The other venue I went to that night had the correct start time just for reference.

Nice venue, good show. They were such a bunch of teases by doing the intro to Here Comes Your Man, but then not playing. Got Debaser, Where is My Mind and two versions of Wave of Mutilation, so that makes up for it. Newer bassist was a fine replacement for Kim. Honestly, this was the first show I ve ever been to where I left thinking: that could ve been louder. Not bleeding from the ears isn t all that bad either, though.

If you EVER get an opportunity to see The Pixies in a venue like Peabody Opera House...DO SO!! I'm not what you'd call a HUGE Pixies fan only owning a few albums and I was familiar with about 50% of the songs they played but Damn were they good musically!! Sound was excellent and i was IMPRESSED to say the least from their 1st song Vamos to their last song Bone Machine. My ONLY disappointment was that they didn't play Bagboy. Excellent Concert!!!

I take all the blame, but I just don't get it. The music is monotonous and atonal. The lyrics are not compelling to me, That's kinda what happens when you insist on elementary rhyming "Soon the Moon in June, will make us swoon..." the message is compromised for the sake of rhyme. And of course every song sounds the same.Just not my thing.

Wow! Just WOW! I go to A LOT of concerts. This might just be the best concert to date this year! And, I saw so far this year U2, Neil Young, X, Boss Hog, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, Eagles of Death Metal, The Violent Femmes with Echo and the Bunnymen, and Queens of the Stone Age to name a few. Yeah. The sound was fantastic and THE PIXIES played over 30 songs and didn't stop. They just played one after another after another. WOW!

I have seen the Pixies 5 times starting in 1989. The Pixies concert at the Fillmore in Detroit was excellent! I was always thought Kim was a big Deal. But I have to say her replacement, Paz Lenchantin seems to have breathed new life into the band and the show was tight, the crowd was energized and the Pixies seemed to feed off the energy of the Detroit crowd. Black Francis's vocals were as good as ever and the 36 set show was priceless!! The new songs are good and mix well with the Pixies classics. I look forward to more new music from the band and future shows in Detroit.

If you have ever fantasized about primates going to their great reward, thought about incest or even felt like screaming "It's Educational!" on a crowded bus or subway car, go see the Pixies in concert. The newer material is good too, but they don't play a lot of it and the songs come non-stop from "Wave of Mutilation" until "Into the White" (the usual opener and closer). If you are upset about Kim not being there, give Paz the benefit of the doubt, because she is a very capable and accomplished replacement on bass. But if you insist on being an originalist, I have six words for you: I am un chien andalusia, Debaser!

I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, and let it go that Kim Deal was no longer part of the Pixies. I enjoyed the show for the most part, and their new material is written to include the new bassist and her range of singing. However, Black Francis' voice is kinda shot and when they started in with "Into the White", as is tradition at the end of their shows, I could NOT deal with the lack of Kim Deal. That was one of her songs, and this rendition was so bad that I had to leave. I will most likely never go see them again, and that is a difficult decision since they were one of my all time favorite bands.

This concert was one of the 4 or 5 best concerts I have ever attended. I have never seen a band so happy on stage before. Kim Deale had a noticeable smile on her face the entire concert and the whole event felt like your cousins were playing. Ths accoustics at D.A.R. Constitution Hall were way better than I expected them to be and the fact that the Pixies offer the opportunity to purchase a CD of the nights concert 10 minutes afterward allows fans to enjoy the concert forever. It was really splendiferous!
