Wynton Marsalis is the consummate professional and this concert did not disappoint. He talked to the audience before each song, explaining what we were about to hear, and he credited his musicians for each of their amazing performances. It was so good, I only wish there was more! The show was just shy of 2 hours. My seats were super-close, but in the folding chairs, which are no good for my back. The venue really has no bad seats, and 2 video screens, so I would have rather sat farther back in the permanent seating.

This was a great show! Wynton Marsalis took us on an historical journey through time serenading us with his trumpet. If you closed your eyes you were transported to the streets of New Orleans or to a night club in Paris. Great performance!!!

I've never heard such greatness in music. I left with the thought... WOW! Can't believe what I just heard. Each musician showed their personal character in their music sound. Wynton was amazing. I would have liked to have heard more solos from Wynton. I hope that the Thousand Oaks Civic will bring him back; and have more jazz artists perform at the Civic. Nothing can be as clean sounding, though, as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Very gifted musicians!! Thanks so much for this event.

I am so glad that I was able to share this performance with my 80 year old mother. She loves the horns from the big-band days and had never had the live jazz experience. I couldn't keep her quiet! Wynton's charm and easy way with the group of players he has on tour with him was a delight. Their extemporaneous bits were a thrill and joy!

Such talented musicians! My husband and I bought great seats for our anniversary and we loved every minute. Wynton Marsalis has a nice sense of humor and tells some short, interesting stories. It is obvious the musicians love to play and perform for the audience. I highly recommend this concert of very professional artists! I loved that they were all wearing suits and ties.

Fifteen consummate musicians led by the incomparable Wynton Marsalis . . . what more could a jazz aficionado ask? As Marsalis said, they were playing for us, the audience; if they wanted to play for themselves, they could have stayed at home. And the whole show was indeed a crowd pleaser, characterized by fine solos and brilliant ensemble work. The modest, humorous, and althogether winsome Marsalis sat in his back-row trumpet section, generously sharing the glory with the entire group.

Incredible assembly of the BEST jazz players in the world. Featured were the extraordinarily noteworthy arrangements by Ted Nash and each of the talented featured players wowed the audience. The concert ran the gamut of styles -- from the playful Teensy Weensy Spider and Old MacDonald's Farm to the impressive salutes to jazz greats of old, this was FIRST CLASS. The only disappointment was that it had to end.

The performance was excellent! One of the trombone player came out to the lobby to play with the Reading High Jazz band that was providing lobby entertainment. Wynton took the time after the show to meet with the students, giving them words of encouragement. Great to see a band so successful willing to give back to those looking up to them.

Attended the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert at Tilles on Saturday. The jazz was great and the soloists were outstanding. But the event was publicized as Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO. Marsalis sat in the back the entire time, and it was truly democratic of him to feature the band members as soloists. But the draw was the trumpeter himself, and he didn't stand for one solo. We heard his voice, and his amazing playing, but all we saw was his foot tapping. We felt it was false advertising to promote that performer when it was really the band as a whole--and only the band as a whole--that was featured.

Really enjoyed this event, did not last overly long but was awesome for the musicians to go through a set list that included many types of jazz. Some songs recognizable, some you likely have not heard before. Wynton Marsalis gave background information about the composers before playing each song, made it much more interesting to learn about the different musicians before hearing their music. The band was spot on, great improv and combined sounds.

What good musicians - ens. players & soloists both. The small group dixie things were really bubbly & alive. Great representation of what that New Ordlans sound probably was- yea, better given the better instruments etc of today. The jump in time from the chicago sound to the big band sound representing the age/era of Monk, Coltrane et.al was played extremely well with some really hard ensemble passages played to perfection. My only regret was that in my opinion there was a big gap in the middle as far as covering the contributions of the great bands from the 40's and more current offerings. I thought Wynton did a disservice to this segment.

Wynton Marsalis and his band are always amazing musicians. And I love Wynton's talk about the composers and artists whose music they are playing. It's so informative. I especially liked the beginning of the concert and the encore. Though I appreciate John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, ten tunes of theirs was a bit much for me. I wish he had included some of Count Basie's and Duke Ellington's music. That was a big miss for me and I was very disappointed. The band and Wynton were fantastic. Bring them back. I'll be there.

If you were looking forward to hearing Marsalis play, this wasn't the concert to go to. Although it was not billed as such, it turned out to be a Christmas concert. Wynton sat in back with the trumpet section. It seems that everyone had a solo except Wynton. So....other than his commentary on each song's origin, it turned out to be anything but a Marsalis concert. If he had not been there nothing would have been different......So disappointed....Wish I could get a refund!

I bought tickets for this concert not fully understanding what was occurring. At first, I had some doubts, about how good it would be. Silly me! The concert was a blend of fantastic jazz, played by great musicians, and an outstanding 70 voice choir that amazed whether they were in full power mode, ala the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or doing a down home gospel number. The soloists were great. The blend of instrument and voice was powerful and moving. This was contrasted with some pure voice, and some pure instrument numbers (including a wonderful solo by Winton himself). This is a concert experience that is for all lovers of music.

After buying tickets, I found out this was titled, "A Gospel Celebration." Loving gospel music, I was curious to see how gospel would mix with jazz. We walked in to a wall of sound from about 100 singers in Chorale Le Chateau, with the amazing Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Mr. Marsalis was in the back row with 3 other trumpets, 3 trombones, 4 versatile woodwinds, a string bass, fabulous percussion, and an amazing pianist. Leading the whole group was the most amazing conductor I have ever seen - Damien LeChateau Sneed. The music followed the pattern of a traditional church service, using only a few spoken words by choir members, The offertory was completely instrumental; the Jazz Orchestra interpreted the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. The blend of jazz and gospel was amazing - the best of both worlds. All the musicians followed Mr. Sneed's direction with flawless entrances, clear diction, amazing dynamics, and crisp releases. Mr. Marsalis' trumpet solos were beautiful and enhanced the sound, but the other jazz musicians were equally skilled. The whole audience was spellbound, with enthusiastic applause for each number or special solo, and we jumped to our feet at the end. I felt I had experienced a wonderful and uplifting church service - a blessing to our hearts and ears. We met a woman who heard the performance the night before in Austin, and drove to Dallas to hear them again!

Overall, I was very disappointed with this performance. There was no program handed out when you walked in, so no one knew which songs were coming up or who the performers were. And there were no announcements from the stage. The performance didn't flow from one song to the next. It was like they were writing the setlist as they went along. I wasn't even sure Wynton Marsalis was on the stage! Most bizarre jazz show I've ever seen.

The musicianship of JCLO does not disappoint. The intonation and dynamics of each section, and in turn, the blending of the sections as a band is incredible. So many groups have a player that just sticks out even while trying to blend. The sound of JLCO is smooth as velvet. And catching up with Denver trumpeter Greg Gisbert for a few minutes after the show was an added bonus.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis was incredible. The talent of those individuals hits you from the first note. Although the JLCO may not play some of the more commonly heard standards, I was amazed by works that were original and the lesser known (to a casual jazz fan) tunes from the swing era. They played Jelly Roll and Ellington, so don't get me wrong, you'll recognize those works, but, they weren't what I was expecting. In many way, that made it great. We missed him and the JLCO 10 years ago while in NYC. If I ever get back and have the chance, we won't make that mistake again!

Wynton and Co. were masterful once again. I see this orchestra 3-4 times per year and this was one of their best shows. Setlist ran the gamut from Ellington and Armstrong to original compositions by band members, including reed man Ted Nash's Presidential Suite. Solos by Marcus Printup, Victor Goines, and Sherman Irby were stand-outs. The rhythm section was on point all night. Marsalis has a special intuition with the audience. Sensing we wanted more, he played alone on stage after the rest of the band had decamped, for another ten minutes while we cheered. Magical

I thoroughly enjoyed this show, and it was my first jazz concert, as I usually go to rock concerts. Wynton M. was a good leader and I liked his speeches between songs, they were very educational. The only improvement would be to include more singing in the setlist, one song was not enough for me, maybe add just 2 more, as I think the audience really would like it! All the musicians in this band were excellent, top-notch at what they play. I was very impressed.

Since 1982, I have seen Wynton live a number of times, and the sound he caresses out of his horn still gives me goose bumps. Clearly this is the best jazz band in the world right now. They play it all in a sort of "history of jazz" format. Each player could lead his own band. They are All Stars. Berks Jazz Fest featured Wynton Marsalis in its promos, but this was really Jazz at Lincoln Center and nothing more. Marsalis sat and played in the back row the entire evening, and wasn't even featured on a single song. Depending on your seat, you may have never even seen him. Playlist was quite eclectic, and didn't even feature any of his major hits. A significant number left at intermission, and the response upon the majority of the band leaving the stage at the end was so lukewarm that they didn't even come back out for an encore. The three musicians left onstage clearly felt very awkward. Overall, a huge disappointment.

Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center band never fail to impress - but we thought the repertoire for this show was just fantastic. Really showed off their artists well, and introduced us to some works we weren't familiar with. What I especially love about Wynton's group is how they all seem to be having so much fun. They've probably played these songs hundreds of times - but it still seems new and interesting to them! Extremely entertaining, a really nice (big but not too big) venue to show off their wonderful talent.

Mr. Marsalis led the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with skill and allowed the talents of all of the musicians to shine at various points during the performance. If you love jazz, you must see these incredible performers.

I'd heard Wynton Marsalis' music for years, but this was the first time I'd seen him in concert. He's such a professional and his band plays like a well-oiled machine. Each one of the band members is so talented.

The tickets were a gift. for my boys and me. I wasn't sure if they would like the show becaue they are 13 and 14 years old. Well they really enjoyed it. I've wanted to see him for a long time and it was well worth the wait. All I can say is "AWESOME!"

One word: AMAZING!!!!!! But, since I am required to use more than one word, I will continue with: Mr. Marsalis and the other members of the band presented an eclectic and wonderful mix of jazz pieces, some familiar and others newly composed. What a talented group of gentlemen! We were awed and amazed by their level of talent individually and as a group!

This event was a treat for my husband who is a muscian and really appreciates music. i enjoyed most of the pieces as a novice Jazz fan. Itsy Bitsy Spider arrangement was outstanding. and the closing train songs made you feel as if you were traveling on a steam engine. the audience for the most part was appreciative and classy. the folk beside us did get a drink poured on them by a person on the row behind us.

Wynton's 15-piece Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble is outstanding. The Florida Theater was the perfect venue for this event. It felt like an intimate jazz club and Wynton made you feel like you were at home. He is so gracious, so humble. He shines when he plays, but allows the rest of the ensemble to have their moments, too. You feel like he's sitting in your living room just riffing. Absolutely outstanding.

Excellent musicians doing a slovenly job. Barely met union standards as far as music played per hour. Calling what was played "music" is a stretch. The program mostly consisted of non rhythmic, non melodic "original" avant garde cacophony dissonance. If this program appealed to any of the audience it was a very small percentage. A lot of very fine talent wasted.

His presentation put the evolution of jazz in a social context and showed how music gives meaning to our life as well as helping us to develop empathy towards others. I just wish the presentation included more in terms of the very excellent musical performance.

Interesting to see a more varied side of Hugh Masekela. But the knockout performance was by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. These are some of the finest musicians in the world, and together, they are off the charts with talent!

Wynton is dedicated to the past, present, and future of jazz music. They played a variety of styles, time periods, and kept the audience's attention through it all. Very high quality performance. Going to the concert was a dream come true.
