St. Paul and the Broken Bones

St. Paul and the Broken Bones

St. Paul and the Broken Bones bring a youthful enthusiasm to their flashback sound, reviving Southern soul right down to the matching suits each band member wears. Lead singer Paul Janeway tears through each song with unbridled passion, swaying to the rhythm as he skillfully navigates each crescendo and vocal trill. The band adds smooth basslines, banging drums, and blaring horns to breathe life into each soulful serenade and rocking rhythm.

Hummm... Drew was really good. The songs are relatable and singable. I will enjoy more of his talent. St. Paul was good for about two songs. The horns were great. The intermission was way too long. The venue is ok. The screens by the stage need to be larger and the sound needs to be uodate- there is something in the sound that clips out and makes things muffled. Great Choices of food.

A solid soul R&B band. Musicianship is great, lead singer has a ton of passion. My only wish is that there had been more room to dance.

The band sounded great but the room was much too small for the loudness of the band. He is a screamer (good thing) but with the horns and guitar, the sound was a mess. Slow songs worked better.

I haven't been a fan of St. Paul and the Broken Bones very long, maybe four or five months. I first heard a few of their songs and snatched up their latest vinyl, and I was pleasantly surprised. When I moved to St. Louis and heard they were performing, I knew they'd be a great first show for me in the area! The area and venue are great, though it was a bit difficult for a shorter guy like me to get a good sight line to the stage. Luckily, I found some friendly people who let me squeeze in. Great beer selection, good acoustics! The show was amazing, very talented band and a great horn section that really fills out the sound live. I think people underestimate how much quality a horn section can add to a performance. They were very rapid fire between the songs, and didn't spent too much time working the crowd; just sticking to the music. That was refreshing!

We saw St. Paul and the Broken Bones perform at the Clearwater Sea & Blues Festival in 2016 and were amazed! We drove 150 miles from Bloomington, IL, to St. Louis, MO to see them perform at the Pageant- an awesome venue. Looking forward to seeing them perform in Bloomington, IL at the Castle Theater in June! St. Paul & The Broken Bones are a cross between soul and blues- incredible horn section, organ and the lead singer's enthusiasm is contagious- they definitely perform to their audience!

First of all, the opener Aaron Lee Tasjan was incredible. Great folk-rock type band. Secondly, St Paul and the Broken Bones rocked the house! I was right in front of the stage and had an amazing experience. They're very talented and entertaining. Best show I've seen so far.

I have followed this band for the last 5 years, so obviously I'm gonna have s great time, however I talked 3 friends who have never heard the band, into joining me and they are still raving about it. 2 of them told me when we arrived that they needed to leave before the show was done they had to "work" the next day, needless to say they stayed well past the encore!! Amazing, amazing performance. They really get into the personas of the songs instead of just singing them. KUDOS TO THE BAND!!

This was a very energetic performance from an extremely tight ensemble. They didn't miss a beat. It took some adjustment to listen and watch great R&B being performed by an all-white band, but they had their act together. Paul Janeway is a great vocalist, but sometimes he was trying too hard by crawling around on the floor. The audio balance was quite good, but the house system had quite a bit of distortion from the horn section, and it was very hard to understand the lyrics much of the time (not that it was critical). This was surprising considering the venue. The crowd was great, and I'd recommend this group to anyone who knows or grew up on the Memphis sound.

I appreciate talent. This band is very talented! However; if the singer would sing and not scream I believe the crowd would have hung around longer. We left 1/2 way through as did many others. He's got talent, no doubt but his stage antics were over the top in my opinion. I would have much preferred the band less St. Paul. Almost like it was a combination of singing and preaching, you know that loud preacher who doesn't need a mic.

We heard SP&TBB on Colbert a few months ago and were impressed. Enough so that i jjumped at the chance for tickets to the first of two Ryman show and got great seats. They are a very good band with an outstanding singer, and are only a couple of elements away from being truly unforgettable. It would have been more impressive at a smaller venue. The audience was enthusiastic, and obviously knew the material better than us, which is neither here nor there. I ll be interested to see how they are in a year. The opening act on the other hand was mind-numbingly dull. That a big hill to climb.

Anytime a band receives a standing ovation at the Ryman AFTER THEIR FIRST SONG, you know something special is going on. To a sell-out crowd, St. Paul and the Broken Bones entertained and wowed the crowd. We have been following this 7-piece band for about three years, and we think they're great. As a regional band just 4 short years ago centered in Birmingham, they delivered vintage soul covers sprinkled more and more with their own creations. Their show dates have now far transcended the regional weekend event circuit and they are becoming quite well known both nationally and internationally. If you ever have the opportunity to see SPBB and blow it, you deserve to roast for it. If you do go to one of their performances, prepare to be entertained. My Favorite Moment: Paul Janeway (St. Paul) lays down on the stage floor, crawls under the skirted drum stage, all the while singing a blusey song, and remains hidden for a few minutes, finally emerges, wraps himself in a yellow stage rug, then unwraps himself for the finale of the song.

To the "Missed the show": Almost all the concerts have a opening act. You should have just gone out into the lobby and hung our for a little while if you didn't like them. Waiting around until 9:30 was well worth the wait. Truly sorry you left early. Hope you get a chance to see them again. I thought both shows were incredible with the new songs combined with a few of the songs off of Half the City.

It was amazing to see a group of musicians that play that well off of one another and have so much fun doing it; and better still, to see that group of musicians be overpowered by such an amazing voice. So back in February 2014 I was listening to the new releases and I came upon ST.PAUL AND THE BROKEN BONES and their debut album HALF THE CITY Wow- I haven't heard soul singing like that in a long time. Off to You Tube for some visuals. There I saw their video for the single CALL ME. I couldn't believe what I was watching- here's this regular looking guy kinda geeky looking putting on a show that would have made JAMES BROWN and LITTLE RICHARD proud! Or at very least put a smile on their face. The dude was killing it! To their credit the band already had a bunch of excellent vids posted (so important for a new band) and they were all captivating. Now to see them live! I saw they were playing in Philly the following month and bought tickets. JOHNNY BRENDA'S is the MERCURY LOUNGE (NYC) of Philly. The perfect club (250capacity) and geared for sound. Parking is challenging - just be patient and you'll find a spot on the street. I saw PAUL JANEWAY in the crowd before the show and we met him and he was nice enough to pose for pictures. Then ST. PAUL put on a show that Bethany would later describe as mind blowing- and rightly so. I've never seen a better show. ST PAUL AND THE BROKEN BONES WILL BE ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST LIVE BANDS IN AMERICA WITHIN A YEAR. Seeing ST PAUL at this intimate club was fantastic and bragging rights wii no doubt be mine going forward

The venue was great! Very nice, my first time at VonBraun Center. Excellent acoustics. The biggest detractor would be the... how do I phrase this... "academic" crowd that didn't want to get up and dance. I mean, it's St Paul & The Broken Bones, moving is a requirement! Paul was in great form and the band rocked it out. I took my 3 daughters to it and they enjoyed it, but weren't knocked out (the last show I took them to was Iron Maiden, so maybe it was a little more laid back). Overall, great show. My 3rd time to see them and they never disappoint.

The concert was fantastic! Having sung with Paul before, I knew what to expect, but he greatly exceeded expectations. The only drawback for the whole experience was having to stand or move twice to be able to see. We were on the 5th row on the brass side and due to tall people on the first row that stood the entire concert, all the following rows up to the handicapped seating had to stand so we could see something besides backsides. This is the only reason it didn't rate 5 stars.

I don't recall seeing that there was going to be an opening act....They came on and the sound system was so extremely loud that many people headed to the lobby. Fortunately, I did too and found they had earplugs for sale so I could at least go back to my seat without holding my ears! The opening act, I believe they were called the Seratones, came out 30 minutes late and yelled out 7 or 8 similar sounding songs. When they left...they just left. No 'thank you, Seattle'...no 'it was fun!' ...just left. By the time St. Paul and the Broken Bones came out it was almost time to go, by my clock. We stayed for a couple of songs...they were good, but also way too loud.

Great Band. I've seen them five times, at much smaller venues, including a campground pavilion in Texas. They are getting better known but their show has been toned down a bit.. Still excellent musicianship and singing. Unfortunately we were seated behind 4 obnoxious 20-somethings who had their phones in their hands for every second of the show. More interested in texting, calling, and playing games than the music, Very distracting to everyone around them. Overall audio mix was OK but could have been better. Too much bottom end.

Not sure whether to blame the Fox Theater's sound guy, or the band's own sound management, but the overwhelming volume at this show drowned out Paul Janeway's amazing 5-star vocals. Words were unintelligible, and the BB's tight backing (especially the horn section) was not done any justice either. Despite this, the band's performance was impassioned, honest and deliciously soulful, and Paul really gave it his all - hence our disappointment knowing how much better it would have been if we could have heard their music more fully. At a certain point, super-amped volume just becomes self-defeating and the music becomes a muddy mess. It was a shame to see such a talented and powerful singer so compromised by the poor sound quality. (Note: these comments are from two music fans who have grown up enjoying loud-decibel rock 'n' roll.)

To begin, we purchased the VIP upgrade for $45.00 a ticket, and there was no big difference in what we got, aside from the reserved tables, as the higher pricier upgrades, and it was well worth it. Kevin, the bartender at the underground lounge was awesome, and all the other people who met us, including the waitresses in the pit, were great - something we would definitely do again. The venue is really nice and we were in the area above the pit, but since we were let in first due to the VIP package, we were standing at the center, right in front of the stage - we couldn't have asked for a better view. St. Paul and the Broken Bones is one of the best groups out there. Paul's voice is incredible; the music is well made; the show is a must see. I would see them again for sure - amazing show,

This was my second time to see them in two weeks! Unforgettable talent! Paul Janeway, aka St. Paul, is a cross between a preacher spitting hellfire and brimstone while pouring out his songs with an energetic, powerful array of runs, riffs and soulful lyrics! He gives his all in every song and plays the stage with demanding theatrics, with feet clad in delightful 'shiny' shoes that can't be still! One of the best performers I'v witnessed on stage! His soulful voice combined with his talented band, complete with horn section and nostalgic organ have you moving to their powerful music as soon as the first note is played. Lead guitar, bass and drummer complete the ensemble with power and excitement! So many layers of talent! This band is not to be missed! One of the best concerts ever!! St. Paul & The Broken Bones leave it all on the stage!

The show began with the band, The Burning Pumpkins. I don't think many people who bought tickets for St. Paul et al expected to be listening to screaming, over the top, punk rock mixed with heavy metal and many other things I couldn't appreciate. They played for over an excruciating hour. The smart people didn't show up until after this group finished. Thankfully, I had ear plugs. Others left the auditorium until they were finished. At least they were good for the vendors/bars? I thought the overpowering bass was an intentional part of the the Pumpkins performance. But, alas, it remained so with St. Paul. I like a good bass, but this was so loud that I couldn't actually hear the other music or understand the singers words. And I wanted to hear the brass horns, keyboard, and his words. Perhaps someone should check out this problem and correct it for future performances? I know several people who attended and they all had the same complaint about the volume of the bass. He has a big, soulful, demanding voice and it was just drowned by the bass. Paul is a gifted vocalist with great moves and fabulous shoes. He developed a relationship with his audience and kept us entertained. We were treated to some of the new songs on their soon to be released new album and they were great.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones were really good - however, I'm not sure about their sound system - it was hard to make out the words to songs and I heard other people around us make the same comment.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones produced a LOUD unintelligible noise which I would NOT pay to hear again! The warm up band The Burning Peppermints were even WORSE they should give it up as a BAND they SUCK - NOT one word could be UNDERSTOOD! St. Paul should be ASHAMED to have tortured us with that NOISE!

The opening act was horrible. Every song sounded the same. They played the same two cords in every song. St. Paul was entertaining. The vocals were drowned out by the bass making it hard to hear.

I haven't been to many funk/soul/R&B concerts, but this was definitely the best. St. Paul & the Broken Bones has such an energy in performing both upbeat songs and their slower songs. I jumped around like a crazy person when they played "Shake" by Sam Cooke and in general I loved the concert. They have a talent that recordings can't accurately present. Please go see them live if you get the chance!

While I love the band, it was frustrating that it took them so long to start. Nothing was mentioned, no apology about why they were late to start.

Great music in a terrible venue. Paul is a great showman, and the music was just as expected. They even did a Beatles cover of She's So Heavy. I recommend seeing the band, just not at this location.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones Is an amazing group!! Having only heard them on their record before this I was a bit sceptical of this band from my home state. I have been to many concerts where the band was no where near as good live as they are on their recordings. I have thrilled to say that St. Paul and the Broken Bones was everything I could have hoped for and more. The energy of the performance was nothing short of spectacular!!! It was non stop from start to finish with shaping the mood of the crowd with every song. I have and will continue to point people to them for their incredible music and equally stellar live performance!!

St. Paul and the Broken Bones put on one of the top concerts ever! It was literally a shoe- throwing spectacle that no performer I have seen accomplish since the likes of James Brown. The audience was on its feet the entire show and St. Paul never disappointed from the moment he walked on stage wearing rhinestone encrusted boots. He made his way off the stage and into the crowd singing, dancing, throwing a tantrum as well as a shoe over his despair and kept the party going for three more encore songs including a cover of Led Zeppelin. The man has talent beyond words, guts and showmanship that is unrivaled in today's live music performances.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones were fantastic. I love their sound. the Horn section and the Hammond organ add so much depth to their sound. It was a sold out crowd that was really rockin'. They seemed to be REALLY enjoying themselves. They all got into the Mardi Gras spirit throwing beads and laughing. I saw them at Callaghan's when they were in Mobile for St. Patrick's Day. I was hooked then. I'm anxiously waiting the new album.

A band this great should invest in a better quality sound engineer. The drums were amplified to a level that drowned out all of the other great musicians in the band. The only time you could hear the other musicians was when the drummer wasn't playing. The vocal for Paul Janeway was muddled and distorted to a point that you could not understand what he was singing. Even when he was speaking in between songs, his words were muddled due to the poor sound quality. What a shame.
