This is my 2nd time at the Derby. From the moment I stepped down to the track seats, the atmosphere was exciting. The announcer was entertaining and everyone in the crowd was entertained. The ladies made the event unbelievably exciting with their physicality and athleticism... Badass!! Would do it again...

I don't have any family or friends on the team and had never been to a roller derby bout. The venue is convenient. Parking is $13 directly accross the street and there is plenty, no hassles there. The box office was just as hassle free, we bought tickets when we got there and walked right in. They have a good selection of beer and snacks. It is clean and roomy. You can see perfectly even from the less expensive seats. The WCR girls really deliver they had us on the edge of our seats cheering the whole time. The staff members were really helpful and even explained the rules of the bout to a couple members of our group. Very nice selection of merchandise and I went home with a really nice t shirt and even some trading cards. We will definitely be back for more WCR! :)

I had an amazing time at Uproar on the Lakeshore both Saturday and Sunday. (Couldn t make it Friday). I commend the Windy City Rollers for an impeccably well organized weekend. This was an inspiring event to be in attendance for. As a derby girl myself I admit that much of my derby watching has been from the perspective of skating on the track. The one thing I noticed that I d like to start the trend on is deterring interruption of a fans viewing by other fans and food vendors. At hockey games I used to attend it was very common for people to wait for a line change or break in play before they would get up or return to their seats. Even the beer guy knew better than to stand in front of people that were trying to see the action. Derby, with max 2 minute jams and 30 second intervals in between I feel lends itself very well to this sort of courtesy. I will no doubt begin blogging about this but thought I d share it here as well. The more who know, the better!

I enjoyed the event; however, when I asked (on facebook) what teams would be playing, I was told that it would not be determined unitl the playoffs. I do hope that the misunderstood my question to be about who would be in the FINALS, not who would be playing in the playoffs. It was not clear that the Ivy King Cup Playoffs are JUST the Windy City Roller teams .. and not a larger regional event. However, even though it was not a regional event, I enjoyed seeing the Windy City Rollers bout against each other.

We took our grade school daughter and her friend and we all had a great time. The derby takes a while to figure out, but once you do it is a lot of fun to watch! Also, it is great for people watching - a very eclectic mix of spectators. Windy City Rollers bouts are a great entertainment and learning opportunity!

Yawn. Waste of cash and time. Small, flat track that was too small to generate any real skating speed. Dull, listless skaters with no competitive spirit. More attention paid to padding and weird names than to skating skills. As many referees as team skaters. Incoherent, babbling announcer. Wretched PA system. STUPID half-time show. In short, a pathetic shell of what real roller derby used to be. Kind of sad. Total waste of money. Well, maybe that's a little harsh - it is a great hook-up venue. I met another another bored fan and salvaged the evening.

The Windy City Rollers provided a full night of entertainment. The highlight of course was two exciting and entertaining roller derby bouts by the four talented and athletic Windy City Rollers teams. In addition, there were fantastic half time shows during the bouts, fun and games between bouts, and an enthusiastic, friendly, and fun crowd atmosphere. This was a great way to spend an evening!

I was concerned by all the hype of "whip-it" that roller derby might be a little too violent and sexy for my 3 year old son. It was just plain fun, with an audience of all ages who all looked like they were having a great time. I would recommend the sport itself to anyone...but TAKE THE TRAIN and eat/drink well beforehand because concessions and parking make it VERY EXPENSIVE, at least at the Pavillion. Just a warning.

In one word. BORING! This is not the roller derby we watched on TV as kids. Slow moving -- not a whole lot of action. All five of us agreed that it was so boring, we left half way through the 3rd of 4 boughts.

Derby is so much fun. Away from the crowds but just as much fun as pro-league sports ...and much cheaper! The sport is actually quite complex, so there is much more than just some hot derby girls zooming around the track layin down the smack! Visit the team booth to get rules, meet the ladies and even take photos! FUN!

It was my first Roller Derby experience, born of curiosity. I saw the ad tacked to a bulletin board at a Starbucks somewhere and looked it up on the web. Roller Derby is a fringe sport, and I just from observing the teams I think it hasn't decided yet whether to stay on the fringe or become a more mainstream sport. Some players emphasize their punk-like style, and others look like they're playing a sport like any other. That sums um the teams' relative performance, too: the Windy City Roller all-stars were a more polished (synchronized and strategic) team than the SD Wildfires, by a big margin. Their blockers blocked effectively and with foresight, I think that made their game. It's a great spectator sport, if a little repetitive. It's fast, and hard to keep track of at first. A bit like ice hockey in that regard.

Highly animated announcers energize and amuse the crowd while the women prove to be as tough as any guy on the track. The main event is fast, furious and exciting - you wind up rooting for the jammers, especially those that take chances and exhibit skill and cunning. The windy City Rollers continue to dominate their division, and proved that they can handle other ones too. Roller derby is an, exciting game, (Though the game against Pittsburgh was a lot more suspenseful than the 150 point rout of New York) . One thing that most sports don't have is players sitting in the stands. Sit in the "newbie section" and you are guaranteed to sit by a WCR player from their local league play. They are always helpful and will tell you anything you want to know about the game.

I went in not really knowing what to expect. I saw Whip It (and found it moderately entertaining), but didn't know whether I would enjoy watching live derby action. I LOVED IT (so did everyone I went with). There were two matches (pardon me if I butcher the lingo)--the first was basically a JV match, which was followed by the main event. Thank goodness for the JV event, because without it I would have been completely clueless about what I was watching in the main event and I wouldn't have appreciated the skill level in the main event. We are all making plans for our next trip to the derby and one of us is thinking of auditioning!

I want to split this into two parts, first the UIC venue and then the event its self. UIC Pavilion Plus: Plenty of parking near by, easy access to the highway, great "up close" action from VIP seating. Minus: A little cold inside, food selection and price was poor, speed of service was awful, VIP Seating basic and uncomfortable, sound and video screen below average. Overall I was disappointed with the venue, it had the feeling of an old high school sports gym. It took away from the event its self. Roller Derby "Windy City Rollers" Plus: 110% effort from all competitors, VERY entertaining, good level of excitement, rated "E" for everyone, very friendly and approachable team. Very impressed with the action, team work and overall professionalism of the team. They gave 110% and never gave up when behind. They fought back and brought the game within reach in the second half. I would I totally recommend going to see the Windy City Rollers.

As a novice fan I was highly entertained by the two derby matches that I saw Saturday night. The first one was a great cliffhanger with Hell's Belles eking out a one point victory over the Manic Attackers. The match went back and forth and wasn't decided until the last jam. I love Jams. The second match was totally one sided as the Fury annihilated the Double Crossers' in what seemed to me a display of superior skills and execution. I'm just a novice fan but when those blockers for the Fury put a hip out it stopped people! Very cool!

Flat Roller Derby is one of the most coordinated athletic fastest, roughest womans sport there is. More so than Hockey or mixed martial arts. F=MA. Woman can play the sport because they are smaller than men, can take more pain, and have better tempers. Falling on concrete with few pads, blows out ice hockey. The speeds are almost as fast as hockey. The strategy is more like chess. In general men can't play the sport. They are too big, would fight too much and cannot take the pain of a concrete fall over and over again. The UIC Pavilions sound system sucks. I think they would be better off bringing in their own portable amps and sound system. It would not cost much. It should be on TV.

I grew up watching roller derby on the banked track. It was so much more exciting than what I saw live on the flat track. Interestingly enough, the competition appeared to be genuine in contrast to the exhibitions of yesteryear. Still. I would much prefer to see the action, real or choreographed on the banked track. I would not bother to see it again on the flat track. I enjoyed it somewhat for its novelty, but not enough!

I was a roller derby fan as a teenager, and was interested to see how the game had evolved. While the setting for the match is very different, the same basic principals are still in effect, and the skaters are just as passionate as when I was originally attracted to the sport. In conclusion, the game was very entertaining, the skaters professional, and, approachable! The one major difference from my previous experiences is that the organizers really draw the spectators into the game. The track side seats are well worth the few extra dollars.

Of course, I had visions of the banked rink roller-derby I grew up watching and loving in the 60s. You couldn't beat that mix of rough and tumble and speed. Flash forward, and you get a cheap flat track, fluorescent lights that are never dimmed, half-cocked skaters, little action, horrible public address, and on. Stay home. Rent the Raquel Welch movie, Kansas City Bomber. Save your money.

This was my first time at a Roller Derby event and I enjoyed it though it was smaller than I imagined. I purchased the General Admission (GA) tickets; this is the way to go. The track side seats are folding chairs about 10 feet in front of the GA seats. To me, that wouldn't have been worth the extra money. Overall, fun sporting event; I would go again.

This was my first time attending a roller derby event, and it was a great time! I must admit that at first I really didn't totally understand the scoring and the penalties, but even as a first-timer, by the end of the evening I had mostly caught on to what was happening on the track. The derby games themselves were great. The action was fast paced and exciting throughout both games. All the teams had some great plays, and moments where their star players shined, both offensively and defensively. I will definitely return to another event. It was a lot of fun, and I will be back.

One of the best sporting events I've every been to. It took a little while to get the gist of the scoring and strategies. It was exciting, dramatic and tension built up right to the end. No fighting with referees or with opponents like so many other sports. The women's athleticism was amazing. And they were all different sizes and shapes and all seemed to get along well and enjoy their sport. I highly recommend Women's Roller Derby to anyone.
