Kamasi Washington

Kamasi Washington

KAMASI WASHINGTON IN CONCERT:Tenor sax virtuoso Kamasi Washington is bringing jazz to a new generation of fans with his powerful blend of avant-garde experimentation and hip hop savvy. Washington's cachet in the rap world is nothing newóhe's played sax on tour with Snoop Dogg, Lauren Hill, and Raphael Saadiqóbut his cred reached new heights in 2015 thanks to his prodigious playing on Kendrick Lamar's critical masterstroke To Pimp a Butterfly. Washington followed up later in the year with his own acclaimed album The Epic, and he's been killing it on tour ever since with extended sets that showcase his masterful musicianship and impressive powers as a bandleader. In concert he's a magnetic figure, taking the stage in a traditional African dashiki and conjuring amazing performances out of his band, which includes two drummers, an array of horn players, keys, bass, and backup singers.

Saw this event in Montreal QC during the Jazz Festival indoors. They were incredible. The venue was pretty good; however quite cramp where the stools were; it was not very comfortable. Kamasi was awesome! Looking to see where he will go next and see him again, no doubt!

4 stars for the venue and 4 1/2 stars for the show. I heard some echo, during the opening act and I thought it maybe the sound tech but I heard a little during Kamasi as well. The venue is beautiful and the beer served was good but the sound and the comfort of the seats was not exceptional. Kamasi and his band are great, capturing the melodic feel of 50s and 60s jazz while including a rhythmic quality that touches on today's R&B and Hip Hop sound. I certainly moved around in my seat quite a bit. Although Kamasi's band was clearly top notch, producing blazing solos throughout the show I wished Kamasi soloed a little more often. He can really tear it up. Even if high octane jazz is not your thing treat yourself to some amazing music but if it is your thing, Kamasi is a must see.

Majestic, enlightening, sophisticated, inventive, soulful, beautiful, and sometimes funky! That s how I d describe KW and band. Based in tradition, yet always reaching and always going to wonderful places. Go see them.

Most incredible performance I have ever seen/heard. Even without my glasses and sitting in the second balcony this show was one that I will never forget. Every part of the band treated every song as though they were a band leader and the chemistry between each other was apparent. Worth every cent.

He and his band mates were excellent. Great to hear new blood in jazz playing at this level. You can tell he loves what his musicians do because he didn t feel the need to put his own solos in every song. Look forward to seeing more shows of his.

Go see Kamasi. He is such a talented saxophonist. His drummers are incredible. As is the rest of the musicians. He has a vocalist that performs with them that is really, REALLY EXTRA. If you can focus on him and the other musicians, and not her, the entire performance will be so enjoyable.

Enjoyed the set. Good horn section, good rhythm section. Nice chemistry between all 8 players onstage. The singer had some sound/mic issues earlier on but they seemed to have been resolved eventually.

wow what a performance. this band is truly talented and it was great to see them in such a small venue. the only reason for the 4 star review is that the show was only 90 minutes. for the price of the tickets, that was a VERY expensive 90 minutes.

One of best concerts ever. The evolution of jazz. Was like watching Fishbone, Hendrix and Coltrane. A real live experience not to be missed.

I've seen the future of jazz and his name is Kamasi Washington. A great show by one of the most talented leaders of the modern jazz movement out there -- A band of musical pros behind him, Kamasi and his saxophone shredded new tunes and put his brand on some old classics. If you are a lover of jazz by artists like Stanley Turentine, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, etc, run, don't walk to see Kamasi Washington. He very well may be the last survivor that can move millennials to understand jazz and help create and mentor new artists to take the place of so many greats who we've lost. Added bonus, Kamasi was a very nice and approachable guy after the show who hung around to talk to fans and sign autographs after an energetic performance by the band. Now that's giving fans their money's worth!

What a show. Right from the first song it was like he was in encore mode. Huge music for sure. My heart was racing. And that tiny lady with the big voice. What a brave lady to sing with so many talented and loud instruments. First time listening to them, and it won't be the last. Definitely a new fan forever.

We saw Kasami on the Danforth just before his show. His trombone player walked into the Pizza Pizza after the show and we chatted with him. Great guys, great energy. They sound AMAZING together. Please check Kasami Washington and his band next time they're in town!
