I first saw Anoushka play with her father 15 years ago. And now I loved how she has blended North Indian Classical Music with other instruments to create a sound all her own.

Anoushka and her band were in top form once again. This is the second time I've seen her and she seems to stick pretty closely to the material from her most recent recording. This time around, the songs (from her very recent release) were mostly dark, moody, and kind of heavy sounding. Being mainly a fan of rock music, this was a welcome direction to hear her go in and I thoroughly enjoyed her sitar playing, arrangements and most definitely the accompaniment of her amazingly talented band with their unique instrumentation. Her music transcends all genres and is eternally moving. It was a privilege to see her again and I hope I'll get many more chances in the future.

The ensemble of instruments was refreshing and original. First time listening to a spanish electronic percussion live on stage. Each piece built upon the previous climaxing with raag jog. Absolutely brilliant!

We had mixed feelings about this concert. The fusion of sitar with flamenco was unique, as were the accompanying artists (mridangam, bean, drummer, guitar, vocal flamenco), but there were many spots in which the music did not flow. However, we were disappointed in our front row (1) seats! The stage was so high and the instrumentalists were so far back on the stage that we couldn't even see them. A few people tried to sit on their coats with little success. From the musical standpoint, Anoushka Shankar is an alright player. However, the pieces were very practiced with minimal improvisation (and improvisation is the mark of an accomplished Indian classical music player). Although she can play very rapidly, she plays very mechanically rather than emotively and unfortunately does not make much eye contact with the audience, and her affect is stiff. I felt as though I was witnessing a "private show" but not drawn in by the artist.

Absolutely unbelievable set & setting. It didn't hurt that Anoushka's parents were in attendance. The players brought their "A" game for this gig. I swear, everyone walked out of the Carriage House a good two feet off the ground. If you needed to re-charge your batteries the Villa can do it that on it's own. Couple that with the mesmerizing talent of Anoushka Shankar and you're officially being powered by the "Force". A full day later & I'm still trying to process it - "Did that just really happen??? " Wow...

I was sitting in the second row, I looked to my right and here comes Ravi Shankar...the crowd erupts with applause as others recognize him. He sits in the front row just left of center. A hush comes over the crowd... The curtain opens and we begin. The venue is so intimate, it was a joy to watch the facial expressions and non verbal communications between the musicians. The quality of the sound was superb! She played several of her father's compositions with some of her own arrangements. "Variant Moods" was fabulous with the flute simulating the violin. They also played Anoushka's compositions which are wonderful and energetic. They ended the show with a solos.

Last Sunday Anoushka Shankar returned to her home town San Diego for a dazzling performance. She was joined by a Keyboard/upright Bass player,Indian horn player who also played various bells & a fabulous drummer/percussionist from Austria! Most of the selections performed were from her latest LP "Land of Gold" which were very emotional songs depicting the struggle of immigrants suffering in Europe currently. Incredible dynamics along with excellent musicianship created a atmosphere for truly a memorable evening. The lightning was very well done which created a meditational & stimulating ambience.

Expansive yet intimate are the two words that begin to sum up the mind blowing and heart opening power of Anoshka's latest work. The ancient complex voice of her instrument that meets new percussion by Manu Delago and just enough stand up base, keyboard with piano and electronic elements topped off with the Indian reed shehnai instrument -- all speak to the soul as Anoshka intended. Land of Gold invites citizens to look closely at the huge migration events happening currently to families seeking a safe future and home. She says her instrument is the terrain exploring the gamut of emotional expression with shades of aggression, anger and tenderness -- and that's what listeners get intensely and with gratitude. Anoshka set out to open our hearts to the plight of other families far from here brought right before our ears and eyes with this timeless and beautiful music.

Had no idea what to expect. Got a high energy instrumental jam session with fantastic guitar-god (goddess in this case) type sitar playing and amazing accompaniments from the drummer and the most soulful wind flute I've ever heard. For 20 bucks it was the best concert I've been to in years. Terrific music.

I have to admit I was not familiar with her music when I got the tickets- I figured if she was offspring of Ravi Shankar that she would be great! For some reason I thought she sang- perhaps confused her for Norah Jones! She plays the sitar- amazingly. Her band rocked. The flute was amazing- sounded like vocals. The percussion was deep and bass. Really great stuff.

This show was simply superb, so beautiful and organized with short intros to each song. The members were so full of life and energy and passion for their music. The venue was really nice with good sound and not too big so as there wasn't a bad seat in the house. I especially loved the folk instruments from India like the clay pot, shenai and twingy sound thing that you never get to see performed live. The Flamenco musicians were great and I loved the booming box. The woman's voice was so melodic. The improvisations by each of the musicians were outstanding too! Anushka never seemed to tire and played with such ease and grace and her hand moving so fast up and down the sitar, she gave us an encore as well with a heartfelt, romantic & slow raga. I liked that poem about the moon and the bit about Persian origins and the history of the music.

She is fantastic and talented! Amazing musicians that she has put together as well. Everyone was top of their class. A must see show. Also, what an honor to see the Raviv Shankar daughter play for her father here in San Diego! Only thing that would make the show better would be to have some equally talented dancers be part of the display that would enhance but not distract from the amazing abilities of her and her talented group of musicians.

My husband and I were amazed by the quality of the performance of Anoushka Shankar and her ensemble. She was able to connect two completely different cultures into one through the music and made us fall in love with her talent and her instrument- sitar. As a sandiegan, I hope to see her performance in San Diego every year. It will help us to follow her bright future.thanks

There are few artists who can successfully carry fusion shows. This one, Sitar with Flamenco was one such, purely due to the mastery of Anushka Shankar over the Sitar. The percussionists did a fab job of supporting the pace. Often there were moments where we could not decide who was faster and more skillful. The energy in Anushka's shows is truly unique. This is one of those concerts after which you wonder, Why am I not playing any instrument with so much dedication and passion.
