The Rides comprised of Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and keyboardist Barry Goldberg. I had expectations of Stephen Stills but I was not sure what to expect from Kenny Wayne & Barry. This was a fantastic show with Kenny Wayne Shepherd burning up his guitar to such an extent that I would say that he is in the top 25 living guitarists. This was just a fantastic show from three top musicians
Expected more from such great talents. Sound was way too loud to enjoy vocals. The Ryman is noted for awesome acoustics which was not there that night. We were there 3 nights earlier and sound and levels were great.
Didn't care for The Rides. Bless his heart, but Stephen should call it quits. As singers age, they usually lose their voices, but the should still be able to sing in key. KWS is something of a one-trick pony and there is a repetitiveness about his playing that wears thin after three songs. Chris Layton seemed like his mind was somewhere else. 2 Stars. Los Lobos, on the other hand, proved that old guys can still rock. They were tight, up tempo and had the house rocking. I would have preferred they were headlining. 5 Stars.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is AMAZING. Which is why I do not understand the match up between Stephen Stills and him. Stephen Stills cannot hold up to the young talent. It was a clear and welcome difference anytime Kenny took the lead. Kenny is such a stand up guy that he never "stepped" on the legend's toes even though it was apparent that his help with vocals would have made a huge difference in my listening enjoyment. Stills should not even be singing. It would be like having an overweight retired ball player join the team and really screwing things up. I cannot wait to hear Kenny with his own band (which I have in the past) AND ... why not have Beth Hart join them on stage? Such a missed opportunity. Kenny and Beth would make beautiful music together.
Man these guys can play. Although, they started out way too loud for that venue, there was no place left to go. Stephen certainly doesn't possess the vocals he once had and that's understandable. It was nice to hear Kenny's voice for a change, and it was quite good. These guys are a factory of chops, licks and musical virtuosos in their own right. Great chemistry. Great blues!
Thsi show was way beyond expectations. As a long time classic Stills fan, didn't expect too much based on reviews of other Stills' shows. Stephen was right on with the singing and guitar playing. Kenny Wayne was amazing too! The energy was high at the show and Barry Goldberg on the keys was the perfect mix. Great show and great set list. Lots of classics like "For What It's Worth" as well as "Love the One You're With". They played all the songs from the new The Rides album along with extras from Stephen and Kenny's catalogs. Beth Hart was an incredible opening act. Totally woth the ticket price. Highly recommended! Rockin encore!! Go see this show before it's too late!!
Good concert. I went primarily to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd and he did not disappoint. KWS is not human. His guitar is awesome; out of this world. For the first time ever we heard Kenny sing at his own concert. Now I know why he has Noah on vocals. Kenny's voice does not do justice to his guitar but I don't care. His guitar is what gets me going and I'd go out of my way to hear that guitar over and over. Stephen, Kenny, and Barry blended well, a good combo. All 3 have great style on their own, and even better style combined. The whole is greater than the parts.
the band was great stills,Goldberg and kws make a great combination the guitars are screaming and Goldberg on the keyboard is excellent Beth heart opened the show she has a great voice and band

This was an awesome show just like the last time we saw them on 9/27/13 in Reno, NV. That was actually their final show in the tour as well as this one. Totally freaking awesome, Stills and Kenny Wayne dueling guitars to some good old rock & roll! Stephen Stills, OK so his voice cracked a time or two, still plays like one of the best which he is, and KWS complimented the grooves when needed and then stepped out for his own blistering solos. Great show in that 1600 seat theater! Can't wait for another round!

Went to the concert because of Stephen. I have been going to concerts to see him for over 40 years regardless of who his band mates were. I was not familiar with Kenny Wayne before discovering this band. I have to say that I was really impressed with his guitar playing and vocal range. The show as outstanding and I will go see Kenny when he is in concert. This venue is about 50 miles from where I live but I love The Fox riverside. Great place to see a concert. % Star show. The Rides were fantastic. I have new respect for Kenny Wayne and the rest of the band. They are comfortable with each other and well jelled. The synergy between Stills and Shepard is classic. They play off of each other, the rhythm section is cohesive and driving. Goldberg makes a Roland sound like a Hammond B3. Don't miss them.

Kenny Wayne Shepard carried the show. His guitar riffs were immaculate, and he understood that force was needed. His voice never diminished. Stephen Stills was in voice at the early part of the show but weakened after half of the show. All in all, it was a great show. I won't forget it. I immediately went out and bought the MP3.

Wow - this is the show to see this summer. Any one of these muscians individually could easily sell out a venue, so getting to see them together as a band is a gift. So much amazing talent on one stage, including the legendary blues drummer, Chris Layton. Stephen Stills is still rockin' it. Kenny Wayne Shepherd just shredded on guitar and it's easy to see why Barry Goldberg is sought after as a keyboard musician. Bravo!

stills voice didn't always hold up, and he had a habit of being too far away from the mic so you couldn't hear him, BUT the guitar playing between Mr Stills and Kenny Wayne Sheppard was GREAT !!! especially KWS sound quality was real good then the inexplicable decision was made during the last 2 songs of encore to crank it up to the point where everything sounded off key, thought about leaving did I get my moneys worth, yeah I think so , would I come again, maybe loved KWS and the guitar playing was great but the encore was poor

I saw The Rides on their first tour a few years ago. They were great then and even better this time around. Excellent professional musicians and they put on a Great show. Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Barry Goldberg are simply amazing. The different tones of Stephen and Kenny's guitars mesh so well as they play together and "speak" to each other during solos. Barry Goldberg is amazing with wonderful solos. Chris Layton and Kevin McCormick produce a back beat that is flawless. Even with all the wonderful music, the icing on the cake was you could tell all five artists were having a truly Fun time.

Stephen Stills (An all time favorite of mine since the days of Buffalo Springfield), Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Pure Music Genius) and Barry Goldberg (Tickles the ivories better than most) not only lived up to my expectations but far exceeded them. It was an evening of soul touching music in many ways and I would not hesitate to pay the more than reasonable price that they charged to be in the audience many times over. The venue that they played in which was the historic Balboa Theater located next to Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego has excellent acoustics, fantastic seating and an ambience that is very appealing.

The concert given by Stephen Stills and The Rides on June 1st was the best I have seen in many years. I bought the tickets as soon as I heard about the event, concerned it would sell out. To my surprise, there were still tickets available the evening of the event! Obviously "the word" about this group has not yet gotten out. Although their albums are a joy to listen to at home and in the car, their live performance is something not to miss. Loved seeing Stephen Stills, my first rock and roll love. KWS was wonderful, too; and Barry Goldberg fantastic on keyboard. I did not have much prior experience with The Rides, but I will now keep tuned in. I was only slightly disappointed that we didn't hear more of the each individual's former work. It would have been a great night to hear SS perform Black Queen or Go Back Home and KWS perform Voodoo Child--three of my favorite all time tunes.

The concert was fantastic especially KWS. His playing was awesome. SS is getting older and sometimes struggled to hit the notes both on the guitar and singing. Still one of my all time favorites though. The meet and greet was a disappointment. They all seemed disinterested and like they didn't want to be there. If that's the case then don't do it. It did get me great tickets to the concert and a nice picture but they didn't really even make eye contact with anyone. First time I've done one of those and will probably be the last. Stills was particularly surly. Bottom line is great show, great venue. One last thing is the could have played longer.

The band was exceptional. Steven Still's voice is showing his age, but his soulfulness continues to shine. Loved the trade of lead playing with the guitars and keyboards. It truly was the kind of music that came out of the '70s with taste and accents sometimes forgotten in today's music. I hadn't heard KWS for some time and I was surprised to hear him singing given his comments from 20 years ago on his singing ability. Room for improvement: The sound was overdriven in the auditorium and the crispness of each musician sometimes lost the beauty and pop it could have had (take a lesson from Eric Clapton's crew - they can make stadiums sound great). Still's guitar was too muted as compared to KWS and some of his leads were therefore weak in volume, but not flavor.

While Stephen Stills will always be a rock and roll legend, the real star of this show was Kenny Wayne Shepard. He looked good, sang with passion and ripped on his guitar. Stills had his moments, but fumbled with his pick and did not look comfortable on stage. Also the drummer played with little or no emotion and looked like he was watching a movie on a monitor at his side.

Stephen was struggling with a hand injury but still played great. His blues playing was a revelation for someone not particularly fond of CSN. KWS....proved again he is one of the top 2 or 3 blues guitarists playing today. Barry Goldberg one of the great little-knowns but you know his playing (Devil With A Blue Dress On) and songs (I've Got to Use My Imagination-Gladys Knight). Whipper Layton solid while just learning the songs.

With this much proven talent on stage, you would expect a great performance, and we were not disappointed. Stills and Shepherd traded guitar solos all night, reminiscent of Stills and Young in their Buffalo Springfield days. You can sense that they all really enjoy playing with each other and it shows in the music, a great mix of Blues standards, original songs and a few pulled from each artist's considerable body of work. Just the right amount of banter with the crowd, too. Goldberg's work on the keyboards nicely complemented the excellent guitar work from the two frontmen. If you want to see some amazing musicians performing for the love of the music, the Rides are your band. The setting in Balboa Theater was perfect for this type of performance--highly recommended!

Stephen Stills has always been one of my ol' favorites. His influence on Rock & Roll will be felt & appreciated way after this tour. Kenny Wayne & Stephen are from completely different backgrounds but someway the guitar seems to be a connecting rod to age & youth - 2 great artists from different generations creating something new. Rock &B Roll does not get better than that. It almost feels like Kenny would rather be playing more traditional blues - this tour is a great opportunity to see Kenny sing more.

We spent the night with some interesting people last night. A little band called the rides. Beth Hurt opened for them and if you haven't heard her she's worth a listen. Amazing band and a voice that will knock you off your feet. Very powerful. Then for the main course. The rides and I think Mr. Stills names them correctly. They did take us for a ride indeed. A mixture of Ol blues, New music composed by the band, and some songs made famous by Mr. Shepard and Mr. Stills. Kenny mentioned that touring with the band gave them time to pull one or two songs out of their catalog. And as Stephen notes his catalog goes back just a bit further. Between searing leads by both Kenny and Stephen ( and I must state Kenny has come into his own the last few years ) some fantastic piano work by Berry Goldberg. Some true blues funk a few delta blues songs and a salt and pepper of pure rock the night was magically filled with the wonderful music of the rides. This was the last of the birthday presents I got for my beautiful Wife Tami this year and from the smile on her face it looks like I saved the best for last. Best quote from the concert Stephen Stills " I thought 68 was the worst year ever we lost Bobby and Martin but looking at 2013 I don't think we learned an f'ing thing.

One of the best Blues shows ever. I would pay to see just Beth hart in concert and Kenny Wayne Shepard is one of the best Blues guitarist playing today.
The new Stephen Stills project, The Rides with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg, played a blistering 90 min of music. Stills showed he can keep up with the younger Kenny Wayne, who killed on guitar. Barry Goldberg was outstanding on keyboards, shifting from pounding piano to organ, and kept the band laying down a rockin' groove. The band as a whole rocked the entire set. I think, partly in trying to stay current with youngr players, Stills has lost a bit of his unique style of guitar playing. I miss that from him. Having said that, it was good to see him in his element of Blues-Rock again. He showed he can still rock with the best of them! All in all, a great show with the exception of the PA getting louder and louder as the set progressed. By the end it was close to unbearable...which is saying something for a Blues-Rock show. Beth Hart opened and night and she set the right tone for the evening. She has a great voice that can wail with anyone and she's backed by a great band.
Bought tickets for Buddy Guy and really wasn't paying attention to who was the opening act! Suddenly I see familiar faces on stage and realize this show was a huge, huge bargain! I'd have paid to see either Stills or Shepherd alone none the less together and followed by Buddy Guy! Their guitar playing was great and it was a fantastic show. They worked well together and it was one amazing set. All in all a fantastic night of the blues on a cool night with the moon shining down through the Palm Trees.
Playing alongside the young guitar phenom that is Kenny Wayne Shepherd has rejuvenated Stephen Stills. He looks happy and seems to enjoy himself on stage. They give a solid 1 hour and 45 minute show of mostly the music on their 2 albums. Yes, they dip back for "Love the One You're With" and "Blue on Black" but don't go thinking you're gonna hear a CSN show or a solo Kenny Wayne presentation. Barry has the bonafides and keeps the whole thing moving along and for us Texans it's good to see Chris Layton back there laying down the beat. A very good show that shows Stephen is still relevant and of course also brings back some bittersweet memories.
While Stephen Stills had some extremely memorable moments, "Johnnys Garden", Kenny Wayne Sheppard stole the show every with every lick on that guitar. The two complimented one another, but had rather seen Crosby, Stills and Nash, and a separate Kenny Wayne Sheppard show, both incredible!
I'm thrilled that we had the opportunity to go to the show, the music and Kenny Wayne Shepherd's performance were fantastic! Unfortunately, I think Stephen Stills singing career is well done and over. We would cringe every time he took over the mike. His voice was cracked, reedy and just horrible. His guitar playing was phenomenal!
Fell in love with Stephen Stills all over again. Fantastic concert. Kenny Wayne knocked my socks off, the kid's really good! Wish Barry Goldberg had a more prominent (louder) role. What I could hear of him left me wanting more.
I was so excited that Kenny Wayne Shepherd was coming nearby in concert! He's an amazing, talented musician. I was NOT disappointed in his performance. The Keyboard player was also quite good. The really sad (and painful to listen to) part of the concert was the performance by Steven Stills. He is a great musician but it's time to call it quits. He's had a broken jaw and is severely hearing impaired. The vocals were awful, really awful. Knowing his music from CSN it was shocking how bad he sounded. The audience was polite and applauded, giving him the respect he deserves as a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, but there were plenty of looks of shock and cringing on some of the lyrics. It would have been better if he'd just played the guitar and let someone else do the vocals.
Amazing combination of blues rock royalty. Bucket list I never thought to add but on there now.

I bought this ticket as a "bucket list" thing, wanting to see Stephen Stills in a concert setting before I die. He's one of my favorite artists, but somehow I'd never seen him play live. So imagine a band in which he's not even the best guitarist! I came away happy that Stills is still alive and kicking, but even more amazed at the skills of bandmate Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The Rides move easily between rock and blues numbers, and Shepherd has an incredible knack for knowing just what to play whether he's soloing or happily serving as the sideman. Together with keyboard great Barry Goldberg, former Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton, and Bassist Kevin McCormick, the Rides rolled through several songs from both of their excellent studio records, Shepherd's own "Blue on Black," and Stills' "Love the One You're With" with ease. An encore featuring a blistering version of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" was the icing on the cake at the Mother Church (the Ryman).

If you even remotely like music, especially Blues music, then see this concert. Stephen Stills decided he wanted to make a blues recording, so he went and got some top notch friends to help. Guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd shows his chops and piano player Barry Goldburg provides some great blues licks. Obviously the group is a little quirky, but quirky works with these guys. Los Lobos just sound harmonious. Pleasant listening to sounds that have been entertaining people everywhere for years.

It's hard to see your favorite musician from 40 years ago and want the same performance you saw in your youth. Though Stephen Stills is now past his prime in age, he has not passed his prime in terms of performance. His singing was pretty on and his guitar as well. Any thing he missed was picked up with gusto by Kenny Wayne Shepperd . WOW! Let's not forget Barry Goldberg on organ. They have really melded together and are a proper group making great music. You can tell they really enjoy playing together. Played new songs and also songs from each other's past. I flew to New York from Virginia for this performance. I was Not disappointed.

The Rides sounded great, Stephen Stills can still move his fingers across the guitar but Kenny's guitar playing was UNBELIEVABLE. He is one of the best guitarists out there...no doubt about it. Barry Goldberg was terrific on keyboards and the accompanied players all contributed their sound which made for a great night of music. Loved their songs from their new album"Pierced Arrow". Kenny's voice sounded crisp and strong. Definitely going to make an effort to see The Kenny Wayne Shepherd band.

Show was overall good but the vocals were not mixed well at all so it was very hard to understand what the lyrics were when the musicians were singing. The instrumentation was excellent. Steven Stills looked very relaxed on stage - his moving around showed that he was really having fun at the show.

I saw this three nights ago and I'm still exhausted from the exhilaration of it all. Stephen Stills looked and sounded great and is every bit the leader of this band; I saw me a rock god! Barry Goldberg offered up solid keyboard sounds throughout (and did you ever know he wrote "I've Got To Use My Imagination"? Well he did, and they covered it). And oh my God, Kenny Wayne Shepherd on absolute FIRE. With Chris Layton on drums and Kevin McCormick on bass, what was not to love. The crowd was 150% into this amazing show, and the band responded. They did not cruise one single time - this ride was fast, furious and f-u-n, from the opening number to the encore. I had a blast - thanks for the RIDES.

First time seeing The Rides in person. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is great as always. The band appeared to be having fun onstage while playing. Go see it if you have the opportunity.

Having no expectations, just going to a Sunday night concert, I am familiar with all the musicians, Couldn't believe how great and together the band was, the sound clarity was perfect, the band was having fun. Definitely a great concert, they are a professional band. Go see them if you get the chance, you will enjoy it.

I got upgraded from row 36 (last) to row 3 on the floor by the ushers. Great super group. Would see again if they come back. Steven Stills seems reinvigorated in this line up with younger blues gunman Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Fabulous blues rock show.

Great show. Stills can still play. Kenny was great and he even sang. Band sounded very tight. Liked that they each did one song from their previous bands. Would have loved it if Kenny did Voodo Child but I get it. They did some good covers though.

I was so happy that I decided to attend this event. Being a fan of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and hearing the music from the first CD and newest from " The Rides" I knew this event was going to be special. It was an amazing show! From the first to the last song, they were just on their game! Everyone enjoyed this show!

Wow....whatta band! Great players all and fronted by a legend to boot. Their new songs were real good, too. My only gripe is venue-related.....the Sands Event Center is no doubt and excellent place for a car show or convention, but it's a god-awful place to hear music...and when the band is as good as "The Rides", it only makes the poor acoustics more frustrating.

Steven Stills had his best vocals during this concert. He hit every note! Steven and Kenny were tremendous together. they are truly 2 great guitar players. They mixed original music with some of the known and it was very entertaining.

I have been a fan of Stephen Stills since the '60s. I have seen him in all conceivable incarnations: CSN, CSNY, Stills himself, etc. Rumor has been that his voice is shot and that his recent performances have been less than passionate (although no one ever criticizes his guitar work!). Strike that! He and the group were stunning. The group played for two hours, alternating between rock and blues. Stephen was sublime. The only critique of the concert (in Englewood, NJ), was that he let Kenny Wayne Shepard do mostly all the guitar solos. Which was fine, in and of itself, but one cannot have too much of Stephen playing guitar. All that nonsense about his having had a stroke is exactly that - nonsense. The concert was a joy. The sound system was excellent: the audience could distinguish every note from Barry Goldberg's keyboard. Remember: it's no matter. It's no distance. It's the RIDES!!!!

Was fortunate enough to see The Rides at UPAC in Kingston , A super group for sure. Elder Statesman Stephen Stills, might not reach the higher notes these days but is still awesome, and his guitar playing, with a different ax for every song still blows me away. Kenny Wayne Sheppard, the young buck, is my newest favorite guitar slinger, what tone the man gets out of his pedals. Barry Goldberg on keys, Chris Layton, of Double Trouble fame and Kevin MacCormic on bass provide a very solid rhythm section. Their newest release" Pierced Arrow" along with their first cd " Can't Get Enough" I strongly recommend for your blues collection. And if they come to a venue near you, spend the dough and go see them, you won't be disappointed.

I was looking forward to this for a very long time. My girlfriend had never seen KWS Band but heard me rave about them for the longest. The release of Pierced Arrow on 5/6 was perfect timing to enjoy their new songs and combination of guitar solos. Kenny is a superb guitarist to watch - orgasmic. The vocals for Stephen and Kenny could have been more crisp (maybe the microphones) as they both rocked the house ending with "Love the one you're with" and "Blue on Black" EXCELLENT show!

Approx 2 weeks before THE RIDES were to play Town Hall, we were advised of a sudden change of venue to BB King's Blues Club, a vastly more intimate locale, likely due to poor ticket sales, and PROMOTION (?). I was not happy, having to now wait on line at 5:30 for a 6PM opening and 9PM headline start, a bit of torture packed in like sardines. Opening act Hamish Anderson was unmemorable, sorry...but THE RIDES began shortly before 9. As many reviewers of the Ann Arbor show indicated, Stephen's voice is severely on the wane and I felt he intended to steer clear of the mike to spare more self embarrassment...but SO WHAT, such is life. His presence and the chemistry he's evolved with Kenny Wayne and Barry Goldberg was evident in a tight, fun, well done show. He can still chop his axe credibly and Kenny of course, lead the way appropriately. They seemed to enjoy themselves and with great crowd support. Glad my son and I could be a part of the ride.

Excellent venue for sight and sound. Band was outstanding. The age and experience of Stills and Goldberg teamed impressively with the excitement and youth as well as the flash and drive of Shepherd's virtuoso playing. The rythmn section of McCormick and Layton un- matched. Great selection of songs from both albums as well as their individual solo catalogs. I had intended to see their performance at Town Hall in Manhattan until I realized they were also playing at UPAC in Kingston, NY. Tickets were 2/3rds the price and municipal parking was free! We live in Northern Westchester about 1.25 hours from Kingston so it was a no brainer.
