Jonathan Butler

Jonathan Butler

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol.

The artists were fantastic! Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks were excellent with their individual sets - just magical. Maysa, Jonathan Butler, and Warren Hill had a combined set that was nice. They took turns performing their individual hits, but I was hoping that each one would've had their own individual set. Overall, the weather was nice, the place was packed and relaxed. The only glitch was that it took too long to breakdown and setup between acts. There was a DJ from URBAN SOUL there to keep the crowd dancing during the breaks.

Jonathan Butler, Richard Elliot and Rick Braun. What more can I say? The show was awesome. They all played together or separate for their sets. The interaction among themselves and with the crowd was great. You can tell there was some real fans at the event.

I feel in love w/JB about 15 years ago and have been an avid fan every since. This was the first time I had seen him with Rick Braun and Richard Elliott. I was rocking, reeling, and squealing in my seat throughout the show. I left the show and immediately tried to find tickets to the Smooth Jazz concert because, now I'm hooked! While the 2010 cruise is already sold out, I planning on making the 2011. In the meantime, I'll be following JB & crew whenever they return to the DC area.

When one is psyched up to go out and listen to exceptional musicians such as Rick Braun and Jonathan Butler do what they do best, one would like to hear their unique style as individuals and the magic when they play together. Unfortunately, the person in charge of the sound system that night must have a hearing problem - or thought we were at the MCI Center. This set the stage for audio disaster. The percussion and bass were so loud I had to go to the back of the room and ultimately into the rest room to get away from the noise. The walls were actually vibrating. Any time the entire band was on stage and everyone was playing it began to feel more like a contest to see who could drown out the other one best. Unfortunately, Richard Elliot won every time. When was it decided that saxaphone players only need to jump up and down, swing the instrument around and wail the high notes as for endless minutes count as talented enough to groove with the best of the best? In other words, where is Al Williams when you need him? The two finer musicians could make up for the screaming sax but not every time. The sound system maestro at the Birchmere was responsible for most of the problem. The musicians only have their monitors to measure things by. Due only to the brilliance of Braun and Butler, the evening was salvaged as there were just enough moments when we could enjoy their gifts while they played individually or as a duet. Yes, it was an ATTACK for sure with some good JAZZ in isolated moments.

75% capacity was a personal insult to me, but it didn't phase Jonathan in the least. The man and his music is truly inspirational no matter what your musical tastes are. His shows are not to be missed and this was one of his best. His vocals, his artistry on guitar, his arrangements, the professionalism and tight sound of his band plus being able to share all this with my brother all made this one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life - keep doing you boo.

I bought Jonathan Butler's first 2-3 albums, wayyyy back when. I think he was 19/20 or so, but he said during the show that he had just turned 57, so WOW! First time ever seeing him LIVE and I was blown away but his artistry, charm, humor - and he's a little cutie-pie too! Sexy man! lol But seriously, awesome show. I love jazz but have never really gone to a jazz show, assuming that it would be incredibly laid back and moody (not that that's a bad thing). But Jonathan weaves stories throughout his songs and keeps us laughing and interested in his next word, his next song. Now he goes on my list of people I will always want to see whenever possible. The venue is beautiful (first time there too) but I had to downvote it because we were packed in like sardines. I understand wanting to get as many in as possible but it was hella uncomfortable and those little slabs of wood that pass as tables aren't fit for anything but drinks, although they offer big plated appetizers. The seats are extremely uncomfortable for sitting that long. I will return anyway because the acoustics and sound in this place are unrivaled to anything I've heard indoors, so I gave it 3 stars for that, and the chicken piccata was really good. But you gotta do something about the seating! Do more shows with less people! I found myself distracted by my discomfort toward the end, wanting the beautiful show to end so I could get out of there. Seriously, you're sitting so close to the person across from you, they could breathe into your food, so here's a tip - if you're in a pair, pick seats directly across from each other so you don't have strangers wheezing across your plate, and pick the chairs on the stage end of the table so you can stretch out your legs. Also, the valet service gets a shoutout - whoever they are, they are EFFICIENT, friendly and on the job like I've never seen! Keep them! 5 stars for cutie Jonathan! 5 stars for top level valet service! 4 stars for the chicken piccata! 3 stars for uncomfortable sardine seating and tiny tables!

I guess we were expecting more contemporary jazz like Butler played at the Dave Koz concert we previously attended. Not the case. This was a mixture of genres and predominantly of South African flare. I understand Mr. Butler is from South Africa, but we were expecting what we hear on the radio. Also, a bit too much "religion" infused in the conversation.

Jonathan Butler is one of the world's greatest gutarists. He is also one of the world's greatest singers. He is absolutely the most joyful musician I have ever heard in my own 50+ year musical career. If you've never heard him live, you owe it to yourself to try and do so. As all the concerts of these two highly talented performers that we have seen in the past, it was wonderful. Only downside to the concert was that it was held in a ballroom and not a theater so you don't have graduated seating and it's difficult to always see them on the stage. However, there are two huge screens to be able to see them perform. They are just both wonderful entertainers and nice people as well as we have been on several jazz cruises with them too.

I have enjoyed both these artists, but came mainly for Jonathan Butler. Maysa disappointed, singing other people's songs, when she has plenty of her own good ones, and she made it known that she was there for the money, with at least 4 comments to that effect peppered throughout her time on stage. Jonathan Butler, on the other hand, quickly built a connection with the audience. He performed well, both vocally & instrumentally, and it was wonderful to watch him interact with his band members! Loved this part of the show, just wished Butler & his crew could have given up a few more songs. Too bad there were rude members of the audience that began to gather their belongings & leave in the middle of the last song; would have loved an ovation, at least.

Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight. His only misstep is giving his daughter too many solo parts in his show. She has a thin, untrained voice that sometimes compliments Mr. Butler in harmony, yet is woefully unprofessional on her own. When one pays to be entertained by Jonathan Butler, it is a disappointment to have to sit through his untalented offspring.

The only issue was that he was on for 20 minutes. The time between artist was ridiculous. It was an hour at the least between Rachel Farrell and Michael Franks, then another 45 between the next set. All of the artists were exceptional. I enjoyed Rachelle Ferrell, Michal Franks, Johnathan Butler, Maysa and Warren Hill. The warm-up, Olds was also good. The venue was great, easy access. They do need a better ticket scanning method so people don't have to wait so long in line to get in.

Summer Nights Jazz Festival was "on point!" Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks did their "thang" and the MC and DJ keep the night alive in between acts with the "ole school music!" This was my first time at Wolf Creek and I must say I was very impressed...I will come back!! Thanks for an awesome night!!!

As much as I enjoyed the show and we loved hearing the old school music in between,it was too much wasted time after the muscians were already set up. Was this suppose to stretch the concert? Lets cut the wait time down, there's life after concerts .

I took my father there for his 60th birthday because he loves jazz music. Boy did we have a time. From the 1st act to the main event, it was spectacular. The concert goers were ready to dance and sing along at a drop of a dime. It was absolutley wonderful!

This was my first time visiting the venue, Wolf Creek Amphitheater, and I was superbly pleased. The seating is spacious, and the lawn area is massive -much moreso than Chastain Park. I had second row seating and was able to sit next to the person next to me without bumping elbows (and you know outside seating in Atlanta can make one sticky :). Now on to the concert. Let's face it, while I enjoy live jazz, I was there to see JONATHAN BUTLER. Jonathan was advertised as the Top biller; however, I was a bit disappointed that his set was the shortest of them all. I didn't mind he shared that stage with Maysa (who's awesome); but Maysa and Warren Hill had waaay more performance time. Jonathan only performed 2 songs from his albums, and a duet with Maysa. Sure he played on a song with Warren, but he was not the feature. Rachelle Ferrell was superb and performed a minimum 30 mins. Michael Franks had another :30; but Jonathan sang about :10-:15 mins. The man is amazing, and I've seen him acquire new fans at his live shows; however, I don't think his time on stage allowed him to showcase his music to the fullest.

Rachelle Ferell was more like an opening act!! She did not sing any of my favs from her. Her time on stage was way too short. JOhnathan Butler, Maysa, and Warren Hill were interchanging sets so you did not really get a whole from either act. Johnathan Butler hardly sang anything!! I was very disappointed. Rene Miller was on stage waaayyy too much, we did not pay to see her. Way too much intermission with the DJ playing the samn songs over and over and over again!! The only thing that saved the night was the breeze that God almighty graced upon us and also Wolfcreek Amphitheater wasnt too bad. The lighting was really nice and the grass is soft to the touch :)

Although the concert offered much music for the ticket price, the flow of the concert was erratic and lengthy. In addition to the artists featured, there were additional 'pre-opening' up and coming acts. By the time that the main artist billed (Jonathan Butler), came on stage, he shared the stage with Maysa and Warren Hill in a 'tag team' format. The 'tag team' performed other artists' songs moreso than their own. Therefore, Jonathan really didn't provide a full set as the previous acts, Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks, had provided. In fact, Rachelle Ferrell's set was far too long, in my opinion. So, that's why I gave the concert an average rating overall although there was plenty of music offered for the ticket price.

This was my partner and I first visit to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Open-air venue, slight drizzles of rain and summer time heat. As Ms. Rachelle Ferrell stated, "It's was good for us to all be together in this time and space -- in the right place". BTW, what else can I say about her as she was just awesome the crowd more of her! By night fall, Michael Franks chilled us out with his mellow smooth vocals. There was even a cool breeze blowing through the amphitheater. Once Jonathan Butler, Maysa, and Warren Hill arrived, the crowd received them well. There was definitely law enforcement on hand and the entire event was peaceful. Could it be there were many grown and sexy people in the audience? The Mistress of ceremony and DJ were on que, keeping the crowd laughing, dancing and on their feet. Only issue was the poor planning of shuttle vans taking concert attendees to their parked vehicles. We were too tired to make the after party. In any case, we look forward to many more events in the future. It doesn't get any better than this!
