Jars of Clay

Jars of Clay

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence None the Richer, and it's difficult to imagine the later popularity of heavier, Christian-themed hard rockers like Creed and P.O.

Up close and personal concert with the grammy award winning band, Jars of Clay. Opening for Jars was Burlap to Cashmere and Brooke Waggoner. For over two hours these folks rocked it!!!!

After 20 years of touring and writing music, Jars has found their voice. Their upcoming album is going to set the tone for the next 20 years. And that's a very good thing. As always, these guys get better each time I see them live.

Yet another excellent show at the Birchmere. Because they weren't touring any album this time, they played a lot of older stuff from their catalog, and it was a real treat. Furthermore, they played without a drummer, but instead had a cellist and the show was pretty much completely acoustic, which resulted in creative different renditions of their songs. My only complaint is that they should do two sets at the Birchmere and ditch the opening acts (no disrespect to them).

I've been listening to Jars for about 10 years now, so I'm perhaps a bit biased as a long-time fan, but the show truly was great. They don't often make their way up to MA, so it was a real treat to get to see them. They are not only fantastic musicians, but also great performers and really engaged the audience. Definitely recommend seeing them on this tour.

For a small showing, they put on a lively and fun concert. Its always a blessing to have christian bands come up to mass. Especially this close to home, i am only about 20 mins away from the venue, so it was an awesome opportunity. It was also inexpensive compared to what you would usually pay to go to one of these concerts. Overall it was a good concert.

Everything about this event was excellent, especially Jars of Clay. From watching Matt check out things before the show to their bow after the encore, we were in awe of the quality of their voices, their playing, their intimacy with the audience and their support of each other.

The concert was excellent. First time at this venue and we stood at the stage. For the first song the singer's sound was hard to hear but for the rest of the concert sound was fine. Typical Jars concert-excellent music, fun and a nice crowd.

I have been to one Jars of Clay concert before- 5 years ago in a huge auditorium. I loved it. And I loved this concert even more. It was in a smaller venue, so it was much more personal and intimate. The opening act, Thad Cockrell, was great and I really appreciate that Jars gave him a good 40-minute set. Some opening acts get only 10 or 15 minutes but the band appreciated and respected Thad enough as a musician to give him the time on stage that he deserved. During Jars' set, the energy was great, they had good intros to songs, and chatting in between. They just seemed like good, down-to-earth guys who I wouldn't mind hanging out with and I think that's an excellent attitude to portray. They did quite a few songs off from their new album which I hadn't been able to buy and listen to prior to the concert. Even though I didn't know the songs, I liked them a lot and it just proved that this band was still producing great music. Jars of Clay still remains on my list of favorite artists.

This venue is very nice - intimate with a great sound system and "seating". We stood on the floor for the show - I would recommend it for the best views. The VIP booths are a bit low, and the tables are a bit further away. Food is available from the bar or the restaurant if you are seated. Free parking, very accessible, no nonsense. Jars of Clay was wonderful. They did a great job of engaging the audience. This was probably the best of their 4 shows I've seen. Thad Cockrell was a great opening act, and the Jars band joined him for several songs.

A really nice venue; close the band and not a bad seat in the house! Jars of Clay is still a great band. I like their older music better, and they really were playing more of their newer songs. Given the more intemate setting, perhaps they could have taken requests from the audience? We last saw them several years ago at the Palladium in Worcester, MA. That was a truly awesome show. Thank you for a great night!

Venue was great, easy to see from all areas. Set list was mainly songs off of recently EP & LP; all of which were great, although I longed for some "oldies" too. Delivery of each song was pretty tight. Banter in between songs was entertaining and fun. I was dissappointed that they didn't present the gospel at all, however they did mention the Blood Water Mission, which is so admirable.

Last night's performance proves that Jars of Clay should play in clubs instead of churches, because the incredible energy simply gets stifled inside conservative venues. In a packed audience, people of all ages were jumping, jamming, and rocking out to an awesome mix of classic hits and groovy jams from The Long Fall Back to Earth. The sound at Showcase Live in the Gillette Stadium complex was surprisingly near perfection. Bluesy wails resonated from Steve Mason's guitar while Charlie's ethreal keyboarding took me to a trance. Honestly, even songs that I usually skip over on the record, such as "Don't Stop", changed my attention span because of the enthusiasm from the stage. One other highlight for me was the revamped version of "Liquid". Fans screamed along with Dan as the chorus so aptly states "He didn't die for nothing!" I also vividly remember laughing hysterically as Matt and Steve stood on the speakers for "Dead Man." I can see the tour bus practice playing Rock Band 2 has helped hone their stage presence! :) Being a new dad, I was truly moved by the song "Boys". As Dan described the inspiration behind the song as an attempt to answer youthful searching for meaning, I pictured my son facing many of the heartbreaks that life brings us. I admit being teary eyed when the father tells his child that he will have 100 ways to tell him he loves him. The live performances of Jars of Clay never fail to challenge my heart to become a better man. They are artists who imitate life, and the life they describe is as authentic as any I've encountered. The band's rapport with the audience was silly and spontaneous. We laughed as Steve shared his epiphany of success when he heard the song "Frail" played as musaq of The Weather Channel. They joked about whether that exposure meant they had "made it" as a rock band, or if they were doomed to be meterologist background music. Dan Haseltine mentioned his Western Massachusetts childhood roots, and the band joked about the nutritional qualities of Dunkin Donuts' munchkins. Jelly filled munchkins must have some health benefits, right? My wife and I were smiling the entire show, and we loved seing the band in such great spirits. I will limit my review to one final thought. Jars of Clay is not a "Christian rock" band. They are simply a collection of creative and professional musicians, influenced as much by their faith as their appreciation of bands with strange names like Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Innocence Mission, and Mott the Hoople. Their sound has evolved in every record they release, and refuse to be boxed into one particular genre. Last night, the audience sipped martinis or soda, and yet everyone rocked out to the show. There was no expectation to sit, stand, kneel, or raise your hands. We were there to enjoy music....great music, and we were not disappointed.

It was a good show, not too crowded, comfortable, and the band is really close no matter where you are. Very interactive, they kept the audience involved. The only thing was they only played about an hour and a half total time.... it should have been longer.

Sea Bird was a great band I never heard of till this show. Good music and very talented band! I see them going places! As for JOC, I was kinda disappointed, they had a good show and all, but the remake of Flood left something to be desired. It's the song that made them famous, and they remade it into a distorted rock song, as opposed to the beautiful acoustic sound that I enjoyed. It's like Metallica remaking "One", it just isn't right.

Jars of Clay is better musically live than they are on cd or radio. The harmony of the three singing voices is extraordinary. They have a self deprecating humor that is refreshing. They played a mixture of old standards and new material. The vast majority of it was good to excellent. They are shining lights.

The opening act, Dave Barnes, showed phenomenal vocal and instrumental skill. Jars of Clay was tight as always, especially in their vocal harmonies. Their music lends itself well to a slightly more acoustic feel (without drums or bass), and they did a good job of augmenting the guitars/keyboards/vocals with a small amount of percussion and cello. Both Dave Barnes and JoC were great at engaging the audience.

I love Jars of Clay and their heart for charity. However, it should have been clear to people purchasing tickets that they were not getting a Jars of Clay concert- at least I don't consider three songs a concert. It was dissapointing. Their was way too much talk. The type of "cellebration" that took place should have been a private event, not something people purchased tickets for thinking they were getting a JOC concert. It seemed dishonest.

When I bought the tickets they never said it was a fundraiser. When they arrived in the mail it said Blood:Water Celebration which they never mentioned on Ticketmaster. So when I drove all the way from Chicago to Nashville to see them I was disappointed that they had several other acts performing and Jars only did 4 songs. The concert was riddled with chat, emotional videos and testimonials of their Blood Water Mission, and very little music. At the end they asked for donations which I think is tacky. This was a bait & switch type deal and although I applaud their efforts in Africa to supply clean drinking water to villages where people with HIV live, they should have been up front about their real agenda.

Jars of Clay at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA was a good set. I actually heard about it last second from MySpace and bought tickets right away - about a week out. I'd never been to the venue, but it reminded me of dinner theater - food, drinks, and entertainment in a quaint setting. I intentionally arrived late to just see the Jars set, but saw a couple of artists I liked and hadn't heard before. Jars opened up with their more recent "pop" hit "Two Hands" and I thought that the rest of the night would be in the same vein. They actually focused most of their music on harmonizing with their new content from Shelter and kept a more mellow, acoustic, blues-grassy, gospel feel. My friend compared it to a revival, but without the religious fervor. A couple of times the band and openers commented on supporting the Birchmere, but realized some might have challenges with buying alcohol (they are a religious band, after all). I enjoyed my pitcher of Coors light, some artichoke dip and chips and thought Jars sounded great in the intimate setting. I realize they were touring on a more mellow album, but I wanted to hear some of their more up tempo "older" stuff. But I still had a great time, took some great pics, and got a t-shirt. And felt a renewed feeling of my appreciation for the Godly musical talent of the men from Greenville College.

A fantastic show by a fantastic band. They played all of the favorites I was hoping they would - including Flood, Work, and Frail, as well as a number of excellent tracks from Inland, including the title track, which is yet another penetrating tune from Jars. I have listened to Jars of Clay ever since they released their single "Flood." They have great, inspirational, pop/rock music, and the lead singer has a very unique vocal quality which I love. I had never seen them play live until I saw them at the Birchmere. The show was awesome. They gave a great performance, and even included some songs from the yet unreleased upcoming album "Inland." The thing that made it most special was that the Birchmere is such an awesome venue, since it's not very large and you can see the stage well from just about every table in the room. It's a very personal experience seeing a group or singer that close up. Definitely recomment Jars of Clay's performance, and the venue to anyone interested in live performances!

Outstanding show. Openers were phenomenal and the band really outdid themselves. Amazingly humble and inviting performance. Nobody played a bad song. The crowd seemed dedicated and genuinely open to meeting and spending time with everyone else.

The Birchmere is a perfect venue for Jars of Clay, as they thrive in an intimate setting. The performance was amazing, and the interaction with the band was great as they enjoy engaging and joking with their fans. It creates a wonderful atmosphere, where you know that the band really loves what they're doing. The charitable donations that they encourage are very cool, and it's awesome that they stay after the show to talk to fans. I will always keep coming back to the Birchmere to see them.

This was our fourth time seeing Jars at the Birchmere, and each show seems better than the last. They played a great mix of old and new songs, took requests (they played our request--Lesson One!), and we were able to meet the band and talk to all of them for a bit after the show. Great guys, great music, great venue. What else can you ask for?

I have been a Jars of Clay fan for the last 20 years, and they just keep getting better! They played some classics (Flood, Faith Like a Child, Liquid), and played them well, but they really blew me away with songs off the new album - especially After the Fight and Inland. I would highly recommend catching these guys in concert!

Jars of Clay will remind you at times of America (early stuff) and Mumford & Sons (later work), but they are a sound all their own. It is very atypical of most Christian folk rock today. Great music, wonderful voices, inspiring lyrics. Only problem was the sound - way too bassy. Why dies a venue like this need two huge banks of subwoofers?! Answer is: they don't! Ruined a few songs. The vibrations & inability to understand lyrics made a couple songs unlistenable. Opening act was an aloof, pretentious young woman who needs to lose the chip on her shoulder.

Despite a virtuoso performance by the band itself, the show was hampered by a terrible mix on the sound board. The baas and kick drum were way too loud, and you couldn't hear many of the guitar leads. I'm a bass player, so I like lots of bass, but this was over the top.some people moved to the back, others just left. Jars of clay does not tour with a regular bass player or drummer and usually gets away with it, but this time they got burnt. The sound often resembled the sound that emanates from low rider cars with tinted windows on city streets. Boom boom boom. Ugh. You can't replace musicians with machinery.

Great group at a great venue. Arrive early and wander the boardwalk. The band was perfect. Their talent is so impressive to see live. Personable guys. They made themselves available afterwards for autographs and pictures. A+
