Spandau Ballet

Spandau Ballet

Emerging from Soho's ultra hip Blitz Club in 1979 during another economic depression, Spandau Ballet formed at school in North London before becoming the hottest unsigned band on the planet. From underground, fashion and music obsessed working class Londoners, to global superstars, the band set the pace, the styles and the sound of the 1980s. Not only did their albums sell by the millions, but their look and style impacted on the fashion world and beyond. They created their own style, combining creativity with entrepreneurship and the 'can do' spirit of early 80s youth at a time of crisis and upheaval eerily reminiscent of 2009.

With this being one of the few 80s bands I hadn't seen back in the day, I was interested to see if I'd missed much. I was definitely impressed - Tony Hadley's voice was off-the-charts incredible! Lots of great energy live, and yes, they played several early cuts for the die-hard fans in the audience. Super personable and fun without being corny. Highly recommended.

Awesome concert. The boys are an amazing live band. Lots of energy, don't expect me or anyone else to sit down, it's all about dancing and giving back the same energy they are expending for you. I pray we don't have to wait another 30 years to see them! Amazing, awesome, fantastic show...

I go to 35-50 shows per year, and this ranks up there with any of the best. Spandau Ballet was one of the hardest working bands I've seen, gave 150% effort and were creative and entertaining throughout. Without a doubt, not just a greatest hits make some $$ show -- these guys were fantastic!

I've waited 30 years plus to see Spandau Ballet and they did not disappoint. The sound and the lighting was amazing, the band looked and sounded great. They did every hit. We all sang and danced from start to finish....I think I sat for about 1/2 of one song! And the crowd was fantastic! I'm so happy for the band that they had such a warm reception. Hope they come back again soon!!

Pretty much what you would expect. Great for the die hards to reminisce but for the independent observer, hoping to be blown away its less than overwhelming. The 2 standouts of course were True and Gold, which they very intelligently saved them for last. The rest of their material is pretty much like eating vanilla ice cream, love it in the beginning but lacks variety....

It sure took these fellas a long time to make it to NY, but it was worth the wait. This was an incredible, high-energy show. They sound and look amazing. The setlist was perfect. My only complaint is the hundred or so people who didn't put their phones away the whole night. I am getting to the point where I am going to start knocking phones out of peoples hands at concerts.

It was a great show with a lot of passion from the guys. Tony sounds great and his voice did not falter one moment. They probably sounded better then they did in the 80s. Great to hear some new songs as well. 80;s rock and continue to rock.

Huge Spandau Fan since a teen. Last saw in 1983, San Francisco. They were amazing then and absolutely awesome 32 years later. Truly a fantastic live band. The boys can all play and Tony can sing like no bodies business. Highly recommend. I look foward to seeing them 2 more times before they wrap up their US tour. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

I was familiar with some of the bands hits, and was intrigued by the fact that they were so popular in the UK in the 80's and then sold out the O2 in London 2009 in ~ 20 minutes. Now I understand why! To bad we didn't have the same exposure to them as the UK, but I'm a bigger fan now than when I bought my tickets! If they come back, I'm coming back with more friends!!

Other than a few of their hits, I didn't really know Spandau Ballet. Still, I was interested in seeing this concert, because it had been thirty years since they last performed in the states, and I'm always happy to experience new music, even if it's not. The show, which was emceed by '80s-era DJ Richard Blade, was an energetic and fun experience, even if I didn't know the majority of the music. I did like most of what I heard, quite a bit. While I wouldn't go see them again, I have to say that the vocals and general performance were top-notch, and my friend and I had a good time.

Spandau Ballet should not have waited 30 years to return to the states. They are such a classy group of musicians. So very talented beyond any words. The show was a magical evening. We loved their new material and can't wait to hear it being played on the radio. I will never forget this magical evening with my boys from Spandau Ballet. Simply the best !

Always loved Spandau back in the day but never saw them live, so now that they are ahem older, I had no idea what to expect. But, wow, they were fantastic! As a band they sounded really tight Steve Norman is a BEAST; he has so much energy, it s no wonder he blew his knee out on stage in the \u201880s -- and Tony Hadley s voice was as smooth as ever. I did see him solo a few years ago and thought he didn t have the range anymore, but he proved me wrong at this show. And all the guys look amazing -- I want to know what their secret is! (It certainly isn t clean living, as evidenced by Tony s partaking of Jack Daniels during the show. Hey, whatever works.) The crowd was fantastic too, singing along with almost everything. We were all very loud during the biggest hits, like True and Gold, and it felt like a big celebration. The only eye-roll moment came from the chick in the pit who saw fit to get on some guy s shoulders, lift her shirt and flash the band. Tack-y! Save that for the trashy hair bands, girlfriend -- Spandau Ballet is all class.

I never saw the band in the 80s so when this opportunity came around again after 30 years, I seized it. It was a decision I will never regret. They played all the songs I loved back in the day (Communication is my particular favorite) and the band has not lost any of their magic. Tony Hadley, Martin and Gary Kemp led the front and they rocked the crowd. They were engaging and it seemed as if they were very grateful for the warm, loud response. I will see them again if they come back (yes, please)!

Spandau Ballet had the entire audience on their collective feet from the opening song, "Soul Boy", to the grand finale of their iconic hit "Gold". The five dashing Londoners (Tony Hadley, Steve Norman, John Keeble, Gary Kemp and Martin Kemp) came across the pond prepared to rock the house; and rock they did. Tony Hadley's lead vocals were boomingly rich and smooth. If you close your eyes you could swear "is it live or is it Memorex?". The man can sing for days with a voice strong enough to soar above and beyond the final rows of the amphitheatre. Multi-talented Steve Norman, playing his trademark sax, guitar and percussion worked both ends of the stage with lightning-quick energy. He's a beast of a musician, especially on To Cut A Long Story Short where he's jumping in the air while simutaneously rocking out on the guitar. John Keeble, the drummer who keeps the band in time and on beat is the man in the background with his drum kit. Man, oh man, he will let loose when given the opportunty to shine. Pound for pound John is the hardest working man in any band. His drum solo was impressive to say the least. Then we have The Brothers Kemp, Gary and Martin. Gary plays guitar and keyboard but he is also the man whose eloquent lyrics and timeless melodies captured and enraptured the entire audience. His moments on center stage during "Instinction" showcased him utterly in the moment. It was clear to see how much he was enjoying the time and how much the audience was enjoyng him. Finally there is Martin, bass player and Silver Fox, with his movie star good looks and "IT Factor" stage presence is mesmerizing and hypnotic. I couldn't take my eyes away from Martin. They played a list of songs that spanned their early Blitz Kids days to newer ones includng "This Is The Love" and the show opener "Soul Boy". The highlight of the show was Tony and Gary venturing off stage and into the center of the amphitheatre to do "Gold" with the entire audience accompanying them in song. It was magic.

After 30 years you would think most bands from the 80's would not even be around after all this time. Spandau Ballet blew me away, the sound was amazing, Brought back so many memories. Tony Hadley's voice still sounded like he did when they recorded their albums. He is literally a virtuoso. In fact their sound was even better as they were playing real instruments so their sound was real and power-full. The saxophone / percussion player has so much talent sounded better than ever. Keyboard player was fantastic keeping the continuity going throughout the show. The drummer played on a Premier drum set with double bass drums and kept the 2 Kemp brothers on Bass and Electric guitars rocking out! I would definitely see them again, Their stage show is amazing! 5 *****

Spandau came on promptly at 8:30 PM and cranked out tunes to just about 10:30 PM! If you closed your eyes you would not know if you were in 2015 or 1983 they were that good. The concert at the Pacific Amphitheatre during the Orange County Fair on Wednesday, July 29, was absolutely incredible. The band sounded exceptional and the show was really well put together. We all knew that Tony's voice has stood up fine over the years - some think it is even stronger than it was in the 80s - but we were surprised at how polished the entire band was after the 20 year break. We were especially impressed with the crowd, which got up out of their seats as soon as the boys hit the stage for "Soul Boy" and remained standing until the end of the encore with "Gold!" Another interesting phenomenon was that a great number of folks in the audience were younger fans that were not yet born when the band was at their peak, and we were delighted to see them mouthing the words as they sang along to some of the lesser known tunes. It appears that there is a whole new generation of Spandau fans that seemingly loved every minute of it. The band also exhibited an exceptional amount of jovial and fun interaction with one another, and if there are still any hard feelings amongst them, it clearly didn't show! At the end of the day, this was an extremely entertaining and exhilerating night of music that got everybody in the venue out of their seat and dancing in the aisles. Spandau Ballet stands up in quality and content with any current "Top 40" band performing today. We can't wait to see them again!

Like most Americans, I was familiar with Spandau Ballet through their 80's hit, "True." My best friend, however, was always raving about them, so when they did a short US tour recently to promote their documentary, "Soul Boys of the Western World," I went to see what all the fuss was about. That documentary turned me on to the band and I eagerly awaited the opportunity to see the band in person. I was not disappointed! I didn't know what to expect, so it was more curiosity than anything else. Spandau Ballet are accomplished musicians and Tony Hadley's voice sounds just like it did in the 80's. The band was personable and so much fun to watch. Gary Kemp's songwriting is prolific and it was so hard to stay in my seat. I originally bought a ticket for the 5th row; however, I had the opportunity to get a front row seat and that made the experience even more enjoyable.

I hadn't seen Spandau Ballet since the mid-80's, so when I saw that they were playing the Beacon, I couldn't miss it. I knew Tony Hadley in the late 90's, when the band were at their lowest ebb. So to see them on stage all together, playing so well and looking so happy, was such a treat. The crowd was looking forward to seeing the band after a 30+ year absence and they didn't disappoint. My wife and I had a fantastic evening out, just a shame they only played 1 night in Manhattan.

Thirty two years waiting for this moment. The original line up on the New York stage again after all this time. More then just a hits tour. Played a nice selection of song for all the LPs. Nice surprises included impromptu instrumental additions to the end of existing hits including "I'll Fly For You" which went on for another two minutes or more. Just a beautiful arrangement and gave even more weight to an all ready heart retching song. "Through The Barricades" amazing rendition that hit me so hard as if I had heard it the first time.... gulp . A favorite moment was a blistering set of there early work. About four or five songs including "Reformation"and Mandolin that (if I heard Steve Norman right at the after party) was the first time they had ever played that one in ages. All of this medley they dedicated to Steve Strange (RIP). Nice touch and was not surprised considering how close the band was to Steve and the Blitz Club. Would have liked to of heard "Revenge For Love" which they performed at LIVE-AID but by far a well polished well chosen set list that was truly crafted to move the crowd including new tracks Soul Boys Of The Western World (opener) Steal and This Is The Love . Favorites like "To Cut A Long Story Short". "Chant, No. 1". Communication , Instinction (thank you Trevor Horn) and "True" were expected and "Gold" for the closing number. Nice to see the band didn't predictively play "True" as a closer...too obvious. Hung out at the after party and had the chance to briefly meet again everyone in the band. So glad I went. If you can catch them on this tour do so they still have it in spite of the 20 year break. Gary at the end of the show said We promise it won t be so long next time ....let s hope so. by VJ_Johnny_Blitz on Facebook

For two hours on May 2, 2015 we were transported back to the Blitz Club circa 1978 and taken on a musical journey that took 32 years to make its way back to New York. The band opened with Soul Boys of the Western World , one of the three new songs produced by Trevor Horne. Spandau Ballet did not disappoint their fans playing their early hits Chant No. 1 (I don t need this pressure on) , To cut a long story short , and a medley that included Reformation , Mandolin , Confused and Freeze . Tony Hadley s voice was rich and has gotten even better with age. The band was tight and showed what great musicians they are and why they have always been a great live band to watch. John Keeble (drums) and Steve Norman (Percussions) even dueled on Glow . Of course True was the song that defined the eighties for a lot of us. For me, the high light came during the encore, when Tony and Gary Kemp started "Through the Barricades" and was joined mid way by Steve, John, Martin Kemp on bass and Toby Chapman on keyboards. Let s hope the Soul Boys don t keep their East Coast fans waiting too long before coming back to visit again.

One thing you don't realize if you've only heart the hits on the radio is that these guys can really rock! And they don't need an army of backing musicians and backing recordings to do it -- they're the real deal and they play it all live. Tony sounds, if anything, better than he did back in their heyday, and the others are in top form as well. I really tried not to sing along to every song all night, so I could listen more. Tried. Didn't succeed entirely. Absolutely bleeping amazing ... And the medley of songs from Journeys to Glory was a thrill and a surprise!

Loved Spandau Ballet in high school but lost track of them in the late 80s. Never knew what happened to the guys. Caught the show in Chicago out of curiosity with friends from high school, but was very pleasantly surprised by the talent and musicianship displayed by the band. Spandau is tight, funky and sophisticated, and gave a taste of its entire evolution from Brit new wave to funky dance-pop to the quintessential 80s pop/soul of their best known U.S. hits. They even threw in some clever new songs. Thoroughly impressed by the band. Tony Hadley's voice is still in excellent shape. Watching Steve Norman bounce around from guitar to percussion to blistering sax was awesome. John pounded the drums and the Kemp bros kept it rocking. More than nostaglia, Spandau Ballet is playing at the top of their game. Highly recommend.

From the moment I got there, I was amazed with the facility, great place to catch a show/concert, there were plenty of bars if you drink, but the restrooms were down stairs, that was ok, the seating from stage to back of theater was like an up-hill slope so you can see better, the stage was great for theater concerts, my seats were just off the floor - bit off to the side, but they were fantastic! A fantastic event/evening/concert/band/venue/5 stars across the board!

I was looking forward to seeing this band for the first time, and was truly amazed with their exuberant performance. Spandau was always a favorite band of mine and I needed to see them in person. Not only are they gorgeous (back in the 80s and now), but they are extremely talented. I just loved the lead singer's voice (still powerful and melodic..sorry name escapes me at the moment...memory isn't what it used to be...lol). I was also very impressed with the sax playing blonde marvel (again, name escapes me). I just have to say "Wow" ..what a pleasure it was to reminisce with their beautiful songs, and enjoy some new releases. I can't wait to see them again. I hope they play other venues in both LA and OC. The parking was a nightmare (too many people going to the fair, but I endured in order to see Spandau. The show was surely worth the wait. I highly recommend this band for many reasons: their performance live is spectacular. They play their instruments to perfection and they sing with great passion. They have tremendous presence. I am hooked man. I gotta see them again...Please come back soon!!!! Excellent concert. One of the best I've seen hands down. Also, Richard Blade was in awsome form: he's funny and sweet. It was grand to see him again and remember those KROQ days. My favorite disk jockey with one of my all-time favorite bands. This show was awsome!!!!

Tony Hadley has such a beautiful voice and is just so warm on stage. They all looked like they were having fun and that made the show so enjoyable. I would go see them again in a hot second. Richard Blade is just a great person. talks to everyone like they are his friends and really appreciates his fans

it was a surprising evening listening to Spandau Ballet uplifting vocals and full-band ensemble, including saxophone and hand drums, under the full moon. they sounded so good live, and the British accent definitely made it even more enticing! we all had such a good time at the concert. DJ Richard Blade was very entertaining with his game of poetic lyrics song guessing. When in Rome lead singer went up on stage and sang their song "The Promise" was definitely a bonus!

Spandau Ballet...please schedule another concert next summer for Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California! For that matter, play more USA shows, you can build a great fan base performing concerts as we saw/heard. I didn't know what to expect, though perhaps a bit soft of music. Boy was I pleasantly surprised, it was a full-on Rock band with a crooner style singer! Sort of like Michael Buble' in a Rock band (I've seen MB two times). Lead singer Tony Hadley can really sing well, both soft and belting loud with power. It was a great show in every way, and I say that from experience since I see many music concerts, Steve Miller Band a few days before this show, RUSH the day after. Go see/hear Spandau Ballet in concert!

One of the best live shows I've ever seen! Spandau Ballet sang all their hits songs with energy and joy. I love that they performed some earlier songs and the newer hits. They were so gracious and genuinely happy to perform. Every member performed their best! Tony Hadley's vocals was on point. Spandau Ballet is on top of their game!!!

I thought it would be a chick fest with the ladies going crazy and the guys bored out of their minds, but everyone was so into it. Tony sounded great and the band was tight. The best part is it looked like they were really enjoying themselves on stage.

This was an awesome concert! My friends and I have been fans since our teens and have seen them perform before, but this time we did the meet and greet too. We stood front row during sound check, scarcely believing how close we were, how good they looked and how great they sounded. All of them were so warm and welcoming as we met and took photos with them. They put on an amazing show. Tony sounded pitch perfect, Gary's guitar solos rocked, and no one plays the sax like Steve. All the while Martin and John didn't skip a beat. The open air on a warm OC night with Spandau Ballet was simply a dream come true.

I saw their San Francisco show last January - my first Spandau concert ever from my favorite band of all time!! That was definitely a bucket list item for me, especially since I never thought I'd see them perform in the US again! So when this concert at the OC Fair came up, I had to go again! The open air amphitheater and the great weather made the event even better. I may be biased, but even the woman next to me said it was a great show and thought the band was very gracious too. She said their songs sounded exactly the same. I said Tony's voice sounds even better now!

We were blown away by how great spandau ballet were. We went to the meet and greet and had a fun time meeting the band and watching the sound check. They were so down to earth and cool, and the sounded incredible. We were already walking on air after that, then came the concert. They simply blew the crowd away with a great set filled with hits. Tony Hadley sounded as good as ever and the rest of the band was smiling the whole time, nailing it. Perfect night, we're still buzzing over it!

They still perform and sound the same if not better today. Nothing has changed except they added 35 years to their ages but they still have the musical intensity. Tony Hadley's voice is still astonishing, the Kemp brothers' guitars were fantastic, the drums of John Keeble was still powerful and Steve Norman's all around virtuosity on the saxophone, guitar, congas and percussions were spectacular. Five Star performance all the way!

For those of you who did not see Spandau Ballet's 3 West Coast shows, you really missed an incredible night of musical entertainment. The band was energetic, interactive and the music just never quit! They went through their catalogue of hits from the 80's up to current material. Tony Hadley's voice is just as beautiful now as it was then. Martin, Gary, Steve and John are top notch musicians. High energy throughout the evening.
