This evening was and evening of rare and true talent. Not to mention that it was my birthday. I grew up listening to Johnny Gil and were about the same age. He is an amazing vocalist and down to earth entertainer. He engaged in singing with the audience as well as allowing the audience to get on the mic at one pt. I am so happy that I went. His opening act was Zak was hot also. Very soulful with a multi-cultural group. I got a red long stem rose and even tried to capture a teddy bear of many that he gave out. He even came down off of the stage and danced with us ladies. I was able to touch his hand and just rock with him. I absolutely loved my night @ the El Rey with Johnny Gil. This artist will always bring it and give the crowd as he say's the very best of him and he can really, I mean really sing. I had the time of my life. Moe

Great Performance! And I mean GREAT! He got the crowd moving. JG has always been an entertainer and he hasn't lost a beat. Voice is golden; high notes he is still the master of. He BETTER SING "LADY DUJOUR" next time or "LOVE YOU RIGHT" or my woman is going to complain! Simply put, JG is TRUE talent.

Johnny put on a great show. However, he had his brother on stage to sing background and he could not sing nor did he know the material. Recommendation - Leave brother out of the show.

He is an excellent performer, you have to see him live as he gives all of himself on stage. i truly enjoyed his performance.

First of all, I want to Thank the Howard Theatre for being so beautiful designed and remodeled. It is a beautiful theatre and the arrangement of tables was arranged in a way that you can see the show/concert from all angles. Johnny was brilliant and the show was a very great success. Keep up the good work and I will always looks forward seeing him everytime he makes at trip back to Chocolate City-Washington, DC. I understand that this is home for him and being always back from where you come from the peoples are going to enjoy you no matter what because of where you came from as well as who you are. Johnny, is a wonderful celebrity in my book and I know that I surely would enjoy seeing him everytime is returns back home again and again.

I always loved Johnny Gill, but his talent cannot be matched by anyone. He is enthusiastic, has so much showmanship until it will make you cry. His voice cannot be touched, there are no flaws to report. God definitely has his hands on Johnny and I'm so pleased to have witnessed all of this.

I really enjoyed the concert and hearing the old New Edition songs, as well as their individual songs was wonderful. All 3 of the gentlemen still looked good and move really well. I was very disappointed in the Paradise Theater and the fact that Case was late. I paid a lot of money for my tickets and not to get a full show was very upsetting.

Ok. So, those of you who have been following my reviews for a while know that I'm a huge New Edition fan, right? (I know I'm a huge fan of several artists, but I'm just sayin'.) Well, then you know I was excited when Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill, and Bobby Brown formed Heads of State as a touring trio to showcase their solo material a couple of years ago. But between the recession and my schedule, I missed their last two shows in New York. So this time, I was determined to be there. Tonight's show at New York's Paradise Theater kicked off a string of spot dates for the trio, and Bell Biv Devoe and Johnny Gill (solo) are performing dates of their own throughout the summer, too. The show did not sell out (it's a beautiful, huge theater that seats over 3,700, which is big for New York's small venues), so people in the balcony were allowed to come down and sit in empty seats in the back of the main level. That was after the show was already off to a slow start--opening act Case was delayed flying from Mississippi where tornadoes had plagued the region that day (he did arrive later and performed last). In the interest of time, Heads of State went on without him shortly after 10 p.m. "Hey, Bronx!" Bobby shouted after the curtain opened. Everyone was immediately on their feet and stood for the entire show. The guys strolled out on stage one by one. Hundreds of women rushed the stage and greeted the guys with screams, hands in the air, and a storm of camera flashes. The audience was a sea of illuminated cell phone and camera displays. The aisles were full of women for at least 10 rows. The guys were dressed in white jackets, white shirts, black pants, and untied black bowties. Ralph and Johnny wore black dress shoes while Bobby sported white sneakers. Ralph and Bobby wore black fedoras while Johnny did not. The set was mostly comprised of the guys' solo material with only a small handful of New Edition hits. All three guys remained on stage for the entire show, taking turns backing up each other on their respective songs. Bobby was up first with "On Our Own," which went right into Ralph's "Stone Cold Gentleman," then Johnny's "Fairweather Friend." The energy in the theater was hot! Johnny had us waving our hands from side to side. Ralph chimed in with an unexpected performance of "Money Can't Buy You Love" (from the Mo' Money soundtrack). That one shocked me! LOL. But throughout the set, it would be Bobby's hits that would generate the biggest response, and "Every Little Step" basically set the place on fire. It was 1988 all over again! And they were just getting started. The guys took a break (and gave us a break) in the show to talk and slow things down. The love and camaraderie between the guys was genuine and strong. Ralph pointed to Bobby's "abs" and congratulated him for losing weight on VH1's reality show, Celebrity Fit Club. Bobby proudly showed off his torso and said, "That's what you get when you put ya mind to something." Bobby went on to talk about how he finally learned the lesson that all you have to do is "try." He said that when you've been beaten down by people and circumstances in your life, there's nothing wrong with getting yourself together and starting over. Sitting on stools the guys thanked us for supporting them over the years. They took us back through those glory years with a medley of mostly New Edition material. With Johnny on acoustic guitar, they started with what I consider one of their career theme songs, "Home Again." Any diehard fan worth his/her salt will agree that this song's lyrics of remaining bonded through their music in spite of their challenges still ring true for them today. The guys took turns with their respective verses and saved the chorus for the end. It wasn't quite the rousing rendition I would have wanted, but I understand it wasn't exactly a big hit like "Boys to Men," a song that holds an equally special place in the hearts of New Edition fans, which they disappointed by not performing tonight. "Let's see how many real New Edition heads we have in the house," Ralph said. They tested us with a brief rendition of "Helplessly In Love," a New Edition song from the Dragnet soundtrack. Johnny surprised us all with an amazing extended falsetto at the end. People were screaming for him, and Bobby waved his white towel in Johnny's direction for wearing us all out! Sang, boy! Johnny received the applause but declared that there weren't any "real" New Edition fans in the house. Bobby walked offstage briefly, and the other guys called him back and asked him to sing "Jealous Girl." Audience blinder lights beamed upon the crowd as they sang along to every line. Bobby then thanked New York for so many memories. "It was New York that made us," he said. "This next song speaks to the strength of New Edition," Bobby said. "When Ralph did this song, I had just left the group. But I knew one day I'd be right back on stage with them." Ralph responded to Bobby saying, "You about to make me cry up here!" "Shut up!" Bobby snapped sarcastically. The whole place laughed. "With You All the Way" was the song Bobby spoke of, and Ralph delivered it with all the necessary drama. He paused three times before finishing the last line of the song, even posing for a fan's camera phone. Bobby then teased Johnny for sporting a "juicy jheri curl" hairstyle in the early days of his career. LOL. Johnny performed a brief rendition of "Half Crazy" from those days. Ralph led a rousing sing-along of New Edition's hit "Lost In Love." Johnny announced the next song as his all-time favorite Bobby Brown song: "Girlfriend," Bobby's very first solo hit. They did a stripped down, finger-popping acoustic version of this song. By now Bobby is out of his jacket, and his bowtie is barely clinging to his shoulder\u2026 and he had had enough reminiscing. "Mr. Telephone Man" signaled the end of the medley and set off a high energy string of sing-along hits that also included "Cool It Now." But we all went up for Bobby's "Roni," and he responded with pelvic thrusts and humping the floor (and joking that such moves throw his back out these days). He paused the song to bring out his baby son Cassius, who wore florescent headphones to protect his ears from the loud music. After one too many cameras flashed, he returned Cassius back to the wings. Moments later, shaking hands with female fans almost got him pulled into the audience. These ladies were serious, too! LOL. Johnny's "There You Go" (from the Boomerang soundtrack) went over quite well, and Ralph delivered a dreamy rendition of "Do What I Gotta Do." Ralph's understated brand of drama included spinning around and leaning on a speaker tower and, of course, dragging out the last lines of the song. As if the place weren't already on an amazing high, the next three songs slayed us all dead. Bobby's "Don't Be Cruel" was fire! Ralph's "Sensitivity" was the truth, with the biggest audience sing-along you ever witnessed. Johnny's "Rub You the Right Way" was an ass-shaking power-dance. I mean, we got some serious cardio in on that song with those jerky dance moves we once did in the New Jack Swing era that first gave us these songs. Johnny even snuck in a little of The Gap Band's "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)." The guys slowed things down briefly and passed out roses to the ladies for Johnny's "My, My, My," a song which reportedly was not performed in previous Heads of State shows (though I can't understand why). Arms twisted and tangled in the air, clamoring for roses from the guys. Then, Johnny decided to invite a woman on stage. The lucky woman got serenaded and even humped by Johnny, and she surprised him by throwing her ass back at him. YES, SHE DID! LOL. Johnny finished the song with a growling set of "my-my, my-my, my-my" ad libs that brought the house down. Sang, boy! Bobby's hits closed out the show. "Rock Wit'cha" brought forth R&B nostalgia at its best. Johnny brought out R&B singer Keith Sweat who was standing in the wings and let him sing with them. The audience went wild for Keith, who had nothing but love for the guys. Bobby shared in the love, but he was not going to let it interrupt his performance. Bobby kept singing to the ladies down front as the other guys backed him up. "My Prerogative" was an explosive finish to the night. Hands waving from side to side and Bobby's pelvic thrusts--what more could you ask for? As the song wrapped up, Keith came behind Bobby and picked him up in the air. Bobby cheese-grinned and struck a pose with his sneakers pointed in the air as he glided through the air in Keith's arms. As in any other show, New Edition or solo, this was Bobby's moment. He would be the last one to leave the stage after dropping his microphone on the floor, only to return briefly to get a little more love from the audience. That's Bobby. I wasn't mad at him. In fact, there is very little about this show I didn't like. The set list was an excellent selection of their solo hits, New Edition material that the guys sing lead on, and some surprises. A more perfect set list might have included "Can You Stand the Rain" and "If It Isn't Love," since they were huge New Edition hits lead by Ralph and Johnny, who had a few less solo selections in the set than Bobby. Beyond that, no complaints. My guys did me proud.

the promoter should be ashamed first thing the tickets where marked 6 30pm. the comedian did not come out till 8 30pm she went off at 9pm (she was funny). then they had the nerve to take an intermission they took the dj off the stage to play music from the 50s and 60s era(. the craziest thing was) they did not sell the house out so after intermission at 10pm the longest intermission i have every seen. they invited the people in the balcony that paid half the price of the people on the floor to come down and fill the seats in. the nerve i want a refund. all of this waiting was because they was stalling for case and case was stuck in Mississippi in a hurricane. understandable that he was not there bring on who we paid $96.00 to see HEADS OF STATE. THEY DID THEIR THING. SO SAD THEY STALLED FOR SO LONG THEY COULD HAVE CAME OUT AND PREFORMED A LITTLE LONGER. KEITH SWEAT WAS THERE HE COULD HAVE SING A SONG OR TWO TO FILL IN FOR CASE INSTEAD OF WAITING. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!! THE VENUE CLOSED AT 12AM.

The voices of New Edition: Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill & Bobby Brown were magnificent. However the sound system at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx was HORRIBLE!!! It was unimaginable that for $82.50 per ticket I would get such poor quality sound! The Paradise Theater is a nice venue with comfortable seats and nicely done interior. The Security was also terrible. People were allowed to run up to the stage and clog the aisle changing my great seat into a poor one! My date and I had to stand up the entire time to see the performance! I could've paid for the cheapest seat and then simply walked up to the stage as the venue allowed! However, I came to see the voices of New Edition and they did not disappoint. I gained new respect for Ralph Tresvant. Johnny Gill needs to stay with the recorded melody of his songs a little longer before digressing into his fabulous riffings. Bobby Brown is the King of R&B! Every one of his songs were amazing! Keith Sweat made an appearance onstage and received a huge approval from all the fans! I recommend seeing this show but a a better sounding venue!

The heads of state were wonderful. They still look good! B Brown lost more weight since Celeb Fit Club even doing his trademark "push-up" for us. Johnny's still got it. Ralph's still smooth and Bobby is still crazy. However, this is the 3rd time I have been to the Paradise Theater and they can't seem to start on time. They told us to doors open at 6:30pm but the show did not start until 9:45pm!!!! They said Case, the opening act, had plane trouble and tried to bring him in AFTER Heads of State! I wish these artists would stop booking the Paradise. Its in the middle of nowhere. There is no after show place to go, its too far to travel and the neighborhood...well...that goes without saying.

While the concert was enjoyable. I found it very disturbing that after waiting two hours for the show to begin (although a comedienne and intermission took place), the announcement made about the opening act (Case) was poorly done. What I also found disturbing was guests from the balcony were invited down to 'fill' up the lower level and they wound up in front of the stage (as well as rows of seats) of those who paid almost a hundred dollars per ticket. It was just tacky and poorly done. On the other hand, I felt that the performance was pretty good.

I thought they did an okay job. Bobby Brown did a lot better than I anticipated. Johhny Gill should have done more solos, I think he is an awesome singer..better than Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant. There was an appearance by Roz the comedian. There was an intermission afterwards, at 9:30 until 10:15 then Heads of State performed. This was because "Case" never showed up due to a tornado in Mississippi. The intermission was way too long. The crowds all stand up and run to the stage..so if you have an orchestra seat..the only way you can view the performance is to stand througout the whole show. I will never go to the Paridise again to see a show!! Don't waste your money buying orchestra tickets..you will not be able to see the show sitting down!!

I must say I enjoyed seeing all the artist. I was a bit disappointed with the late start. The show should have started at 8:30pm, but Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill did not come on stage until 10pm. One whole hour we sat waiting for the performers to start. The comedian they had precede them was as vulgar as ever, with children in the audience there should have been a lot more reserve. And I was especially disappointed in the way the singer Case was treated. We were told that there were some flight issues, and this is why he would not be there. But then by the end of the show he turned up, and was more than willing to perform, and the Paradise Theater closed the curtain on his performance and pulled his microphone plug. Now how rude was that! I have never seen anything like this in all my years of attending concerts anywhere. I was really disappointed with the Paradise Theater. I think the Theater owes us; the paying customers, an apology as well as Case the performer. I feel short changed for the amount of money I payed for this concert.

It was great disappointing that it got a late start (around 10)because Case got caught with travel problems (they let him perform for about 5 minutes at the end before closing the curtains and basically pulling him off stage), but the guys hit the stage with mad energy singing Bobby Browns In control, then they went to Ralph Stone Cold gentleman, then Johnny Gill I think there you go. Throughout the night they would do one or two songs a piece and then someone else would go and the other two would sing background vocals. All of them sounded great. Ralph did sensitivity, do what I got to do, Money can't buy you love, I can't remember the other ones. Bobby sang Girlfriend, Roni which Bobby brought out his youngest son on stage for, Don't be cruel, Rock witcha, and every little step. Johnny sang When something is Wrong with my baby, Rub you the right way, My, My My, and sang it while everyone passed out roses, and Johnny brought a girl on stage to dance and grind with him while singing. As New Edition they sang Home again with Johnny playing the guitar, Mr. Telephone man, Jealous Girl, Cool It now, I think Lost in Love, With you all the way. The close out son was My Prerogative with Keith Sweat joining them on stage to sing it with them. It was just as good as having all of them there. They also announced that a N.E. tour is on it's way and that Keith Sweat is part of Heads of State. The funny thing is while waiting for the concert delay to be over they said it would be an intermission (this is after the comedian got off stage) and I went out in the lobby area and there was Keith Sweat talking and taking pictures with people. I think the people promoting it did a horrible job of promoting it. The place should've been sold out it was a decent size but not sold out. So much they asked people in the balcony to come down to the bottom area. But once the show started people rushed the front of the stage so if you paid good money for front row seats it was wasted, you wouldn't have saw a thing.

This was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Jodeci has reinterred the scene as strong as always. K-Ci and JoJo turned it up. Avant was really good. This was my first Avant experience and it was well received. Johnny Gill what can I say is competing with James Brown as the hardest working man. I saw him in Hampton, VA with New Edition and now in Philly as the headliner. He is really getting his tour on. I truly enjoyed the show.

Johnny Gill was worth the price of admission. He was in EXCELLENT voice and still has his "dance moves". Started off w/Fair Weather Friend, which set the tone for the whole show. I keep wondering why they had a set of drums and congas on either side of the stage with no musician playing...then MR. GILL show (Philly) why he is truly unsung...He can PLAY. Later in the show there was an incident regarding his rings...but a true professional he is was SINGING she has my rings. (she didn't...had given them to the Roady). Finished w/Rub you the right way (in the rain) Enjoyed him...now for Jodeci...WTH?!!! They sounded a H.A.M.! People were booing, and they stayed 3 songs too long on the stage. Johnny could have finished his entire set with out the rain had they (mercifully) left the stage. Shout-Out to Avant.

Avant was good.... enjoyed it. Johnny Gill blew it out of the park.... amazing. Jodeci, who I have loved listening to since the 90's was simply terrible...I was stunned, as were the people around me. They weren't even singing, just walking around the stage with their pants half down and shouting.... they were much more interested in performing than giving the fans some real Jodeci swing.

Avant was very good, Johnny Gill was excellent! Wish it had not started raining, so he could have sang more. I stayed until he was through though. He left us in a party mode!! Jodeci was entertaining, but musically, not very good. I was disappointed as I am a big fan of their singing. I will not go see them again. DJ GrayO always keeps you rocking in between sets! It was too darn hot. Dell should look into getting some big outdoor fans!

This show was great! Avant performed all of his classics along with his latest release. Avant and his back up singers were great vocally. Jodeci was the 2nd act. I was there for Jodeci! They are the true bad boys of RNB. They sang every classic. They had girls on stage and touched the crowd, in true Jodeci fashion. Vocally, they did not sound their best. I rated this concert 4 out 5 because DeVante was not there, as advertised. His presence is needed for the true Jodeci experience. Also, the venue is strict on seating and does not allow standing during performances. Jodeci demanded that the crowd get up, which we did. They even had a women on stage. However, you could tell that the old folks at this show didn't like it. I had no voice from screaming and singing along with Jodeci. I left before JG came out. I have not missed a Jodeci concert since 1995. You shouldn't either!

I enjoyed this show to the utmost. Avant, Jodeci and Johnny Gill were awesome. Avant opened the show with a bang. This was my first Avant experience and it was everything I hear on the radio with his hit songs in person. I sang along and got out of my seat to dance a lot. Jodeci came out to ramp up the energy another notch. It was also, my first Jodeci experience as well. I own every record they ever made and to hear those songs by the original artist was even better. K-Ci and Jo Jo and Devante came to give the very best show. My experience was heavenly. Now sex symbol Johnny Gill was awesome as expected. He performed well even though he had a personal crisis going on. He gave his absolute best and it was well worth it. He continued to perform even though it started to drizzle.

Great concert! Johnny Gill is a classic entertainer! He performed his old and new hits and kept the crowd entertained. Jodeci gave a great set, even though Devante wasn't a part of the show. It was like the 90s all over again!

Avante was great. The vibe felt good and set the tablet for Jodeci and Johnny Gill. Jodeci came out and from the start couldn't hold a note. The audiotune was terrible, the band collectively sounded off pitch. at times screaming into the microphone. It was a bad reality for me to know that my favorite r and b band from the 90's had fallen from grace. Johnny Gill was a little better, butt not much. Good riffs and run on's, but not much better. Started to rain mid way through Johnny Gill and my wife and I thought that was out signal to head out. The venue was fantastic. Perfect place to watch a concert in Philly. The cast of vocalist...not so much.

The concert started off with Avant who was excellent. The singers that were with him were very talented. The young lady who sang with him was awesome! Beautiful voice. They were so good! Jodeci was next and while I thought they were good the people around me were not as impressed. So KC was a little vulgar when singing lately "... far more frequently you're wearing perfume" then he does this thing like he's spraying his crotch. Not cute. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. Johnny Gill was last and while his voice was flawless, the dancers he had were totally distracting. He didn't need them at all. After his 3rd or 4th song it started to rain so we had to listen to RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY from the parking lot. The venue was great and the show was well worth it. I enjoyed it for the most part.

Jodeci was bad and went on for too long. Johnny Gill came on late and crowd started to leave b/c of hard rain. All in all fair f In comparison to other great performances at the Dell.

Purchased tickets to see Johnny Gill for me and my wife's anniversary. Was definitely worth it and wish I could see him at the same venue again. Venue was awesome with great facilities, food, and drinks. Johnny Gill definitely makes every moment worthwhile with a great and outstanding performance.
I fell in love with Johnny Gill's voice when I first heard his solo performance in "Can You Stand The Rain" 28 years ago. OMG! 28 years ago!!!! Fast forward to now and this man's voice STILL packs a mean punch. The texture of his voice is like milk chocolate.... smooth and delicious, it just leaves you wanting more. Great stage presence, positive energy and a beautiful smile... Johnny not only met my expectations, he exceeded them. Awesome show!!!!!
I loved every minute of the show!! I felt like a teenager seeing my favorite artist for the first time!! It was absolutely awesome. Both Christopher and Johnny gave their all! I loved how Johnny interacted with the audience! I loved how he hit every part of the stage giving all the ladies an opportunity to reach out and touch him! Johnny can sing the alphabet and I would go crazy! He sang all my favorite songs. Can't wait to see this duo again!
The concert was good...Loved Johnnie Gill did a great job even though there were some obvious issues with the microphones---mainly while Christopher Williams was on stage; he did okay in spite of the intermittent mic breaks... Our seats weren't the best as we purchased our tickets too late and had to go with Obstructed view seating (part of the stage could not be viewed) but they had screens that you could still see fairly well.
The show was GREAT!!!! Avant opened the show with a great performance, followed by Jodeci who hyped the crowd followed by Johnny Gill who was outstanding. Overall I enjoyed the show

This was my 1st Johnny Gill concert, so I didn't know what to expect. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and had a great time. Johnny's voice is awesome and he kept the audience entertained the whole show! He interacted with his fans by allowing a few of them to sing into his mic, coming off stage & into the crowd to sing, encouraging us to get out of our seats & dancing with fans. His back up singers and band sounded great as well. We had fairly close seats, center stage, which I'd recommend if possible. If he ever has a show in my area again I plan to be on the front row!!!

I have been a fan of Johnny Gill since the early 90s and I was anxious to see him perform as soon as I heard he would be in the area. I was not disappointed, he came out on time...rocked the stage with current hits and classics. If you haven't seen Johnny perform and you're a fan I strongly suggest attending a concert. Awesome show!!!

Saw him in concert with Brain McKnight and Eric Benet in Houston. Johnny jumped around, hollered, and said whoooo in the mic for 20 minutes before we left along with others. He played the bongos and some drums and let the arena sing. I d rather hear him sing but that didn t happen.

This concert was the best one I've been to in a long time. They were both very engaging with the audience, and put on an amazing performance. First of all the music was too loud. I don't know if that was because his voice wasn't up to par because he said he was just getting over a cold. Also he sung not one of his songs as he sing on his albums. To me all he did was holler especially when he came down off the stage and into the audience.

Wonderful concert. Howard Hewitt voice is still amazing. Will Downing was awesome sung some awesome songs am now a fan. Johnny Gill was hot looked good, voice off the chain and danced great. Wonderful Mother's Day gift.
Mr. Sexy Will Downing stole the show. He utilized every inch of that stage with so much sex appeal. His voice was AWESOME!!! The interactions with the crowd was AMAZING!!! His flirty humor with the crowd was funny at times and still sexy. I COULD COULD WATCH HIM PERFORM ALL DAY!!! CAN'T WAIT TIL' HE COMES BACK!!! My boyfriend trul enjoyed his performance as well. He was singing out loud as if were home or in the car. He also enjoyed the parts for the fellas.
I must admit, I wasn't excited about seeing everyone on this tour but not one of them disappointed. Howard Hewitt sang all of his and Shalamar's greatest hits. If you're going to see him, be on time because his set is short!...Will Downing was smooth as usual and I love how he engages with the audience....Johnny Gill, my my my what an awesome talent! I forgot how many hits he's had over his 32 year career. Definitely underrated as far as entertainers go. Go see this show, you won't regret it!
A group of four of us went to ladies night out. All three men put on one heck of a show, the audience wanted more. Howard Hewett came through the audience. He came two rows in front of us. Will Downing & Johnny Gill were awesome as well. We we erected in the middle of the audience, great seats. Will go again.
Excellent show, Johnny Gill is an excellent performer. powerful voice. I wanted more even though he did just about all of his songs. I just couldn't get enough
