His opening act, the Mastersons, who also played with the band, were a perfect pairing. Steve's voice was really good, much better than we expected, and the whole band was really hitting it. Very much enjoyed Steve's recollections and stories. So glad we went.

Great performances by all. The Mastersons were terrific and join in for the whole show. Steve was better than ever and been a hard core survivor humble and One to share CREDIT with the DUKES. Rocked it. Hard and soft.

What better opening act could there be than having it be members of the headliners? The Mastersons were an unexpected mini concert I d pay to see anytime on their own. Steve mixed performing, audience interaction, hosting, and even politics in a way few can anymore. Even if you disagree with him (I don t by the way) you weren t offended or turned off by him. The band was just as Steve said, The Best he s ever toured with. My wife and I agreed it was the best concert in the most beautiful venue we ve seen in years!

The opening musician and Earle himself entertained a lawn full of people of all ages. Unfortunately heavy rain came shortly after he got started so many folks left. It was a great show- despite the rain!

I was dissapointed by Steve Earle, after I had looked forward to the concert fro weeks. The concert was overshadowed by political talk between almost every two songs. At the end of the concert "Copperhead Road" was played almost begrudgingly. I would still go back to the National; however, it is a great venue!

Steve Earle was great, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens was a nice, intimate setting - it rained unfortunately so the concert got cut short, but that's just one of the drawbacks of an outdoor venue. Steve Earle played until the sky literally fell - of course his little tent overhead helped him do that. Overall the venue was great and the concert very enjoyable.

Well....Steve played for almost 1 hour until the rain set in......then it was over. Wished he could have squeezed in a few more of his classics before the deluge, but it was great while it lasted.

We have know Steve for many years and couldn't wait to see his new show. Went to the Botanical Gardens and sat on a blanket and had wine and enjoyed 30-45 minutes of Steve's show. Then the bottom dropped out and it poured and stormed for hours. The show was cancelled due to weather. We swore to no more outdoor shows. But then got McCartney tickets for Piedmont Park! Will keep our fingers crossed!

Steve was AWESOME, as usual. Unfortunately, the show was rained out. This sucks even more because I bought the ticket b/c it said "rain or shine", and because Joe Pugg was a big let down. He was very generic and his voice was quite obviously a Bob Dylan Ripoff. This coupled with the fact that he played forever making for less of steve since the show got rained out, made things less than stellar. You can imagine how frustrated I was when I was dancing in the rain to "I Feel Alright" only to be told after that song that "the gear was getting wet" so they were stopping the show. Real drag. As I said before, however, Steve was awesome. I recommend him highly. As for the venue and/or ticket master? Not sure which one misled with the rain or shine statement, but whoever it was, I would not recommend them.

We arrived at the venue a little late and were stuck in the back, but Steve Earle and the venue were still great. He did mostly songs from his new CD of Townes Van Zant (sp?) songs. The only downside: rain came pouring down toward the end of the first set, so we took off.

It should have been a great night of music, it should have been another Steve Earle classic night. I've seen him, with the Dukes, absolutely slay a crowd dead with fantastic songs, energy, humor, and a real sense of irony. I've seen him acoustic and alone in inspiring form, I've seen him in a benefit gig with John Prine, Nancy Griffith, Elvis Costello and Emmylou Harris, where he was both magnanamous and a joy to listen to. I've never seen him in a venue, an open air venue, like the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. The crowd was the usual mix, 'too loud' baby boomers who are more intersted in drinking wine and scoffing enough cheese to feed a small village, posers who just want to be seen at the best gig in town,( 'Is he the guy who does Copperhead Road? I was asked by one), those who's half brothers aunt is the friend of a friend who makes announcements on the local rock radio station, and people like me, who own just about everything he's done and can appreciate one of America's true singer/songwriter/guitar playing geniuses at work (along side Neil Young, Steve Forbert, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan). It wasn't looking good when support act Joe Pugg was playing, the clouds were moving in ominously. By the time Steve took to the stage he looked up at the sky and called out to the crowd' Don't look behind you, it's not lookin good, lets see what happens, but, if we get some bad weather, even if it's an hour or two, I'll be back. And so he began, two or three tunes from his Townes Tribute Album, accompanied by some great stories about the great man, some classics, 'My Old Friend the Blues', 'Ashes to Ashes', it was great, even the noisy woman in front of me stopped talking and opinionating long enough to swallow what had been in her mouth for what seemed an age, but the lightening was becoming dangerous, and I was wondering just how much longer he could play without exposing himself to the risk of frying. Then it came, rain like you've never seen, so hard and so quick that it drenched every one in about two seconds flat. Carl Lewis couldn't have caught the baby boomers, they were outa there. 45 minutes later, I decided to walk back round to the stage area to see if it looked promising for a return, and was absolutely shocked at the storms effects. There was no stage! So, no return to complete the set and, as it says on the ticket, 'no refund for inclement weather'. So, was it good? Steve Earle for 30 minutes, or a mufactured soda-pop band for 90? It was worth every rain-soaked minute.

First, let me say that the events of this concert were most certainly not Steve Earle's fault. In fact, the few songs that he was able to play were amazing! However, due to severe storms coming in the middle of his set, the concert was cancelled shortly after the first raindrops. I was disappointed to have the priveledge to see such a short show, and wish there was a way to reschedule his return to Atlanta. I would gladly pay for another ticket to see one of the most interesting and entartaining musician of our generation.

From the moment he hit the first chord, I was lost in Seve Earle Land. This was my first Steve Earle concert, and my expectations were high, as I had listened to his music for a long time, read his biography and his book of short stories, and had watched "Heartworn Highways" and "Be Here to Love Me" over and over. I had put the man on a pedestal, which is a good place for him. He is also a brother in recovery, which endears him to me ever more.

First of all, no one really compares to Steve Earle. His presence captures an audience in any venue and the Botanical Gardens was such a perfect place to see him perform. It was a beautiful evening for the concert and the crowd was fired up and excited. The rain came in about 5 songs in to Steve's performance. Oh how it poured! Steve said he would give everyone a great show no matter what and I'm sure he did. My date and I left during the storm but we did have a choice to stay under shelter until the weather cleared. The show was great even though we did not get to hear much because of the weather interference. Just love Steve Earle so no worries because we will see him again.

Steve was great for the few songs he was able to play - and then the deluge came... I sort of wish the Botanical Gardens would have skipped the supporting act - although he was very nice - when it was clear a rain storm was coming. This would have given Steve a chance to play more of his set. I understand the show is outside but I feel cheated having spent the cash on tickets, relatively expensive (and so-so) food and wine, parking, etc. I was really looking forward to this show and it really seemed Steve was sounding great.

Now I am a HUGE Steve Earle fan....a bigger fan of him than Emmylou for the record....but this was one of the most boring concerts I have ever been to (except hers last summer at Chastain). The venue is fantastic and it made my overall opinion of the night higher than it would have been otherwise. Besides the monsoon that occured 30-45 mins into the set, the playlist was slow and boring. Sitting outside on a hot summer night in Atlanta, an artist needs to keep the crowd entertained and awake. Neither of those occured, as my friend who came with me actually fell asleep 15 mins in. I am still a Steve Earle fan, but would recommend buying a CD, instead of a concert ticket, next time he is in town.

Berklee was a perfect venue for a solo acoustic performance by Steve Earle. After catching him at last years Farm Aid show and being disappointed that he only played 20 minutes I knew I had to see him when he came back to town. The acoustics, as always were excellent. The highlights had to be "City of Immigrants" and when he referred to himself as "left of Democrat." My kind of guy, my kind of music and my kind of show. Catch him next time around.

I thought Steve Earle was absolutely chaming at his show in Boston. I've heard he can have a reputation for being a bit gruff but on this night he charmed the socks off the audience. This show sounded great. Steve plucked away at his instruments and sang like we were sitting in his living room. The sound had a simple acoustic tone to it. No heavy bass, no processed sounds. Just a man & his guitar clean an natural the way it should be.

Steve Earle gave a dynamic performance. He is incredibly talented. He is also incredibly intelligent and thoughtful, despite being a 9th grade drop-out. If you have trouble with his far-left politics, don't go to his concerts. I personally agree with his politics, but for many fans of bluegrass, his views can be polarizing.

Steve Earle & the Dukes put on a show that was pure magic! The extensive set list mixed the best of the new with the greatest of the old tunes. Imagine going from Celtic to Hendrix to Texas 2-step to southern Blues! Who does that? To borrow an old Dead saying "they may not be the best at what they do, but they are the only ones that do what they do". That night Steve Earle & the Dukes once again showed they are in a league of their own. Bravo!!!

I didn't know what to expect since I had never seen him live before. He played solid for two hours. He is awesome and his band is awesome. He played most of his new blues-based record and a few oldies, like Copperhead Road. I will try to go see him again. And I will be looking for when the Mastersons are at Mucky Duck to see them up close. This was a really nice evening of music and entertainment at the House of Blues.

First I really like Steve Earle. Sometimes you go to see the headliner and the opening act is??? But the Living Sisters could have been the headliners they were that good. Steve Earle brought it to Royce Hall and then some, he's a great storyteller and instrumentalist which translates into magic on stage. He also is an accessible artist meeting folks afterwards in the lobby great guy.

Steve Earle was awesome! The show got a late start, but Steve & the band more than made up for it with their incredible performance. After the show, Steve, Allison & The Mastersons hung around out front to chat with their fans, sign autographs & pose for pictures. He is very personable & accomodating - just like one of your friends! My husband & I had a wonderful time & would definitely go see him again. On another note, this was our first time at The National. What a great venue! We found out that it was built in 1923. The place is amazing inside!

This was my ninth time seeing Steve, and it's always a great experience. This was my first time seeing Steve at Music Hall of Williamsburg, but not my first concert at that venue. Steve mentioned that the show was being broadcast live on Sirius Radio, and that got the crown all excited. The concert was long, with an both an intermission and a group of encores. The diversity of songs was the broadest I ever heard from him. As always, he has a few stories/opinions to tell, but what would you expect from a living legend and political activist.

I have been attending Steve Earle's shows in the DFW area religiously over the past 15 or so years and the most recent one, at Billy Bob's, was the best performance from start to finish that I can recall. Steve opened his two and a half hour plus show with Waitin on the Sky. He then proceeded to play every track from his most recent album, I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive, spread out over the span of two main sets which were separated by a 20 minute intermission. I found Molly-O and Meet Me in the Alleyway to be particularly strong live but I think every song from the most recent album is a winner. The evening ended with two encores sets comprised of four or so songs each. Sprinkled liberally amongst the most current songs were many of everyones favorites spanning his entire career including: Copperhead Road, Devil's Right Hand, Guitar Town, Taneytown, Someday, Ft Worth Blues, Tom Ames' Prayer, Hard-Core Troubadour, The Unrepentant, Harlan Man, The Mountain, City of Immigrants and The Revolution Starts Now. As an added bonus Steve's wife, Allison Moorer, did a wonderful three song set including her beautiful version of A Change is Gonna Come. The Mastersons, a very talented husband and wife duo from Texas, also performed with Steve backing them up. Even Steve's long time bass player, Kelly Looney, stepped forward for a song (something I can't recall ever seeing him do before). If Steve Earle and the Dukes and Duchesses are coming to a town near you, please do yourself a favor and get to the show! As a note to Steve and Allison, please consider getting back on the boat for Cayamo 2013.

Steve Earle took us on a musical Journey at the Center for Ethical Culture in New York City on a Friday night the week before Christmas. Playing solo acoustic, Steve treated the audience to a run of songs from his album TOWNES, which of course is his masterful tribute to the late Townes Van Zandt., as well as to a host of his own tunes. But of course Steve does more then sing. He plays (wonderfully) and talks. He talked about himself, and about Townes, and about New York and about us, ALL of us. The music, the songs, and the stories reflected an America that is Black, White, Korean, good, bad and beautiful. At the end of the night I think we all walked out feeling like there might he hope.

I know. You say how on earth could anyone give Steve Earle 2 Stars. Four words; "We Got Rained Out". Like nobody's business. Steve was only able to perform a small part of his show before the sky's opened up. Everyone knew it was going to happen, but the audience was riveted on the story, the message and the music that Steve was revealing.. His interpretation and performance of the music of Townes Van Zandt allows the audience to experience the genius of Van Zandt from a source so in-tune with the troubled poet and musician that the line between them is blurry. The sound that Mr. Earle is able to project with his voice, guitar and harmonica is a few notches beyond what any advanced troubadour would be capable of achieving. I believe it is referred to as "Living the Music". So sadly it was cut short on a note. Now to explain the title of the review. About half-way through what Mr. Earle was able to perform there was a bolt of lightening that lightened up the sky but was only visible to Steve who was facing north. His comment to the audience which was facing south was; "Don't look behind you". Shortly thereafter another bolt lightened up the sky, only this one was visible to the audience and not Steve. Someone from the audience shouted; "Steve"! "Don't look behind you". Shortly thereafter the obvious occurred. And if you were smart enough to have an umbrella, it didn't make much difference in the end. I wasn't aware of anyone not soaked through and through before they got to the parking deck or their car. It was that torrential. That being said, the short performance we did get was worth a good soaking. It was that good. Steve Earle is a Five Star Performer. Nature stole a few stars from us that evening. TomKinGA

Steve Earle is one of this countries musical treasures, and it shows live. Although I had just seen him last summer, another chance to see him didn't get a second thought. Earle starts the show with Copperhead Road, which is what leads off the LP that he is touring the anniversary of release. He does the entire album front to back. I've always considered Copper to be one of his weaker efforts but it does translate well live. Leading with Copperhead also gets rid of the yahoos yelling out the song title during the whole show. Steve is very talkative, told stories, and played a lengthy show. Some shows you go to and wonder when it's going to end. It never occurred during this one. You wanted more. And as he did last summer, he met with fans after the show with his band for autographs and pics. Don't skip his opening act, The Mastersons. You'll fall in love with them.

This concert was a fundraiser for a specific cause, to help refugees in need. While all of the artists are good in their own respect, They sat in a circle and one person would each play a song and then the next person would play and so on. It was okay except everyone in the audience wanted to hear Dave play more music (it was obvious he was the favorite). Would have been nice to hear him play more than 4 songs..

When Lucero announced a new show opening for Steve Earle at the Ryman Auditorium, I knew I had to be there somehow. Two of my favorite artists playing in an historical venue that I always wanted to visit. Plus, I d get to visit Nashville. The Ryman (aka The Mother Church of Country Music) started as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892 and when the United Confederate Veterans added a balcony in 1897 the seating capacity was 6000. That was lowered to about 3000 when a stage was added in 1901. Non-religious events were booked to help pay off their debt and eventually it became known as the Carnegie Hall of the South. It became the home of the Grand Ole Opry (debut 1925) in 1943 and was its home for 31 years. The Ryman was neglected for many years until renovations began in 1989. The Opry returns every year for three months and it is one of the best sounding venues in the world and is a tourist destination in addition to be a local favorite. There are beautiful stained-glass windows and wooden pews inside. When I sent photos to Peter, his response was \u2018Saturday night and Sunday morning are very Christian. There were statues of Minnie Pearl and Roy Acuff in the lobby, a gift shop off the lobby, and Café Lula (in memory of Lula C. Naff, the first booker for the auditorium). The venue was quiet until about 7:45pm when music started playing through the sound system. At 8pm, we heard Chuck Berry s Memphis, Tennessee and knew the boys would be coming out. Lucero entered to big applause. I don t know what the split was those to see Lucero; those to see Steve Earle; and those to see both but it sounded like much of the crowd was there for the band. The band launched into Texas & Tennessee and we were off. Since they were the opening act it was an abbreviated set but, as always, they played their heart out for us. After singing the only girl a boy can trust is his guitar, Ben said, It sounds a little silly but I meant it when I wrote it. It s an old song. Later he told us they d never played the Ryman before and the crowd stood and cheered (two idiots up front threw their beers in the air. I was glad I was sitting a few rows from the stage and avoided getting splashed). During Throwback No. 2 Ben broke out into a big smile when singing Oh darling marry me. After singing Loving solo, Ben switched from acoustic to electric guitar and, as always when they make that switch, the energy level in the room shot up even more than it was. Taking a sip of whiskey, Ben said, If you were playing the Ryman for the first time you d get a little wasted. When he said he didn t know what to play and the crowd shouted out requests, Ben said, Can t hear you. I m a professional musician and I m deaf. He noted that nobody yelled for Nights Like These (always a crowd favorite) before the band played it and I got chills during the bridge. The set ended with Ben and Rick (on accordion) for The War and Ben thanked us for being so nice. Besides being lucky enough to usually see Lucero at least twice a year in NYC, I ve traveled to Little Rock, Memphis, and now Nashville to see them and I ve never been disappointed. For those still not in the know, the band is Ben Nichols (acoustic/electric guitar and vocals), Brian Venable (electric guitar), Roy Berry (drums), John C. Stubblefield (electric bass), and Rick Steff (keyboards/accordion). I don t know what else I can say about them. I love how they perform without a net. Ben s lyrics and vocal delivery make me cry (in a good way) and Brian s guitar playing is perfection. Roy s drumming is light and powerful at the same time. John C can make the crowd rise to their feet and control them with just one look. And Rick Rick is a musician s musician. During the break, I wandered out to the lobby to see if I could spot any of the band outside or at the bars. I didn t see them but it was very crowded and I figured it was unlikely that I d be able to talk with any of them or any performer after the show. Back in my seat, I heard Guy Clark s Desperados Waiting for a Train and just before Steve Earle and the Dukes came on stage, we heard Johnny Cash s version of Soundgarden s Rusty Cage. A Dobro was among the many instruments on stage and it stood there unused for the entire set. Earle played songs from his latest album (a country album influenced by Waylon Jennings Honky Tonk Heroes) throughout the set but also included songs that the audience wanted to hear like Guitar Town (which has one of the best guitar riffs as far as I m concerned) and Copperheard Road (which brought the crowd to its feet as they sang/yelled out the lyrics in fact they went crazy as soon as they heard the intro). The band started with So You Wannabe an Outlaw and like every song that night when Tennessee was mentioned a big cheer went up. During Lookin for a Woman when I saw one of the musicians motion to the monitor engineer, I realized that I didn t see the sound board in the audience and was wondering if it was up in the balcony. Earle said that his niece Emily was in the crowd. She d been on The Voice and managed not to end up in Cee Lo s hot tub. She wrote a song with Earle s ex, Allison Moorer (when Earle said she was not in the crowd, we laughed) and Earle kept walking in and out of the room while they were writing (this was, of course, before the split) and finally he had to intervene and he helped them finish the song which is News from Colorado. This was the first time that Earle was headlining the Ryman. He had a few stories. The last time he played there was for a tribute to Guy Clark. Earle said he had good teachers. He met Townes Van Zandt when he was 17 and then met Guy. Townes would give you a book and tell you to read it. He also would tell you to put the cap back on the bottle before someone tipped it over. Guy would take the time to show you the process. A bunch of the performers took Guy s ashes to Santa Fe for Terry Allen to include in one of his sculptures. There was the beautiful New Mexico sunset that Earle was sure Guy had provided and Earle wrote Goodbye Michelangelo when he got home. Before Jerusalem he said lines like I don t believe in nationalism. I believe in justice. I don t believe that anyone should go hungry in the richest country in the world. Transcendental Blues wouldn t sound out of place on a George Harrison album or maybe as George s contribution to a Beatles record. He proudly displayed his bouzouki (octave mandolin) and told us that he d played Willie Nelson s Fourth of July picnic for the first time this year. Everyone was playing patriotic songs and, for him, the most American word is immigrant and then he played City of Immigrants. His mother was from Nashville (Earle grew up in Texas) and when they visited his grandmother, they also visited the Ryman. He saw Bill Monroe when he was 7 years old and later saw Tammy Wynette. By the time he moved to Nashville, the Ryman was dark. The crowd kept yelling out requests and Earle said that with 17 albums he can t play all the songs. But the band did play a cover of Hey Joe that rivaled Hendrix version. Before the encore, Earle said that early on in Chicago he ran out of songs to play at a gig. He realized that when your dreams come true you have to find another fucking dream. An interviewer once asked Earle to describe himself in one word. His first thought was, Isn t that your job? but he decided to do it the word was romantic. He s Don Quixote romantic big dreams and keep on keeping on. And he s intimate romantic. He s pretty good at his job but has fucked up everything else he s done. He just wanted what his parents had and what Guy and Susanna had. He thought that there s got to be someone out there for everyone. You can t say the he s afraid of commitment [laughter]. Now that he s older, he s considering that s not true. And he likes sitting where he wants to at the movies. And watching all the baseball he wants. The Dukes are The Mastersons, Chris Masterson (guitars/backing vocals) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle/mandolin/keyboards/backing vocals); Kelly Looney (electric and upright bass/backing vocals); Brad Pemberton (drums); and Ricky Ray Jackson (pedal steel). Earle complimented Whitmore on her playing, singing, and her intelligence. He said she brings up the bus IQ 20 points, which is what happens when you let a woman on the bus. I couldn t have been happier with the set unless he had played My Old Friend the Blues. The band is so tight and the new members (Pemberton and Jackson) fit right in. My love for Steve Earle knows no bounds and I m so happy to have seen him and Lucero in such a beautiful looking and beautiful sounding venue. As we left, Justin Townes Earle s Harlem River Blues played on the sound system. I wondered if that was Earle s choice or venue s.

Steve Earle is a master songwriter and a consummate showman. This 2 plus hour show was superbly constructed around Earle's intensely personal songs and highlighted by his superb musicianship and the incredible backup band, The Dukes. Some new personnel in the band has added some unique moments, especially with the new Houston-based fiddle and lead guitar players. Earle is a genius, and his show makes that genius evident. This was a superb show by a master at the peak of his art. A must see!

I really enjoyed this concert as I was not sure what to expect going in to it. I have liked Steve Earle's music for a number of years and he did not disappoint with this concert. He performed a good mix of his old as well as new songs. The only negative i have on the event was that he could have left out his political comments. When I go to a concert I whether it is Steve Earle or any one else I want to be entertained by their music. I could care less what there political views are.

I should have probably known that Steve was going to crank the volume to an uncomfortable level. Why do so many artists do this today? I have always enjoyed his music and lyrics and was hoping for a more intimate, less raucous evening. No such luck. In fact, I thought the sound was significantly distorted which is so unfortunate - especially in such a nice, small, personal space as Carolina Theater. This performance would have been more appropriate in an outdoor venue or larger audtorium. I thought Steve and his band mates found the groove on about three songs of 25 so, yes, I was quite disappointed. I've recommended the show for the sake of those who were lusting for the Copperhead moment...they got lots of that.

As a long-time conservative and live-music aficionado, I've come to accept a certain amount of political commentary from left-leaning musicians......comes with the territory and usually not a big deal. However, Earle droned on endlessly between songs; his favorite topic being how dissatisfied he is with the recent election and Trump in particular, and how he considers his political views more "worldly" than us average Joes. Gimme a freaking break. We came for your music; not your politics, Steve Earle.

Steve's a versatile artist with a long record of his talent. I've been a long-time fan of his songs like Copperhead Road, Goodbye, Galway girl. Though he played all of those songs, he's moving in a new direction - his new album and concert was geared towards the blues. I didn't like the new songs so probably won't be attending another of his shows.

I've seen Steve Earle 4-5 times now and last Tuesday's show at the Houston House of Blues has to be my favorite one yet. First of all, the Houston HOB venue is just fantastic. Not a bad seat in the place and really great acoustics. Steve was joined by The Mastersons (who were also the opening act and did a great show themselves) and was in good voice and good guitar. He's a "no frills" kind of guy personally and musically - he just shows-up and gets after it. With one of the finest catalogues of songs going today - it was just a great show to see. I wish more of Houston knew and appreciated his work.....or maybe I don't cuz then I'd be watching him at Bayou Music Center or Toyota versus at the House of Blues.

Steve Earle is a master musician and story-teller. He seemed stiff at first and only well into the concert had he warmed to the audience and his surroundings. Shawn Colvin is a favorite of mine and this is the fourth time I've seen her. The other times have been with Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Shawn has obvious chemistry with MCC. That was not so evident with Steve Earle, and their styles did not mesh as well. I am glad I went to the show, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others or go again if I had the chance.

This was a totally different set from them both. We have seen Steve yearly since 04 and finally he played "Goodbye" which we believe is one of his most personal about a person, but on deeper "hearing" about getting sober, mourning the death of the old self. He and Shawn both amaze with high talent in the craft of writing and musicianship.

I've seen Steve Earle twice before in concert; both wildly different experiences. The first show was 1990 with The Dukes. The second some was ten years later solo at Memphis in May. A few years later I actually got to see him on stage performing a monologue in a group of one-act plays, he was a biker vampire and he was amazing! This show topped all three. Shawn Colvin is the perfect companion to this. Her voice is beautiful and melds well with the duet selections and her choice of covers is brilliant. Steve Earle is a phenominal storyteller. His last novel is hauntingly good.

The two singer/songwriters need to have someone do a better soundcheck -- often their guitars drowned out their voices making the lyrics difficult to understand. They should also reconsider their set list as too many of the songs were about the same pace and pitch and everything started to sound alike. The talking they did was actually more interesting than their singing.

As a long-time, dedicated Steve Earle fan, I can honestly say this was one of the best shows ever. And there have been a few, probably upwards of 10. Steve never disappoints and proved that to be true once again as he wowed the audience with a delightful blend of new Earle, early Earle, and even Earlier Earle. New songs such as the Low Highway, and old favorites like the toe-tapping Galway Girl, rocked the Town. The opening act, The Mastersons., were a fabulous duo of incredible vocals and musical talent. Chris Masterson (guitar(s) - several, along with steel guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore, fiddle, guitar, and keyboards joined the band, and added another layer of high energy and fun to the show. Tributes to Lou Reed, and Levon Helm connected the audience even more to this gifted artist, who at once is both rebel and rocker. poet and philosopher. Oh, and let's not forget funny. Love you Steve Earle and the Dukes!!

This was second opportunity to hear this seminal artist. Unfortunately, as in his Toronto concert at Massey Hall last year, the sound mix was inappropriate for a singer/songwriter whose strongest suit is his lyrics and story telling. The music was over-amped while his vocals under-amplified. We hope to see him perform many more times but hope also that we'll get to HEAR him perform.

I've seen Steve Earle solo and with a band a handful of times. His energy and ability to deliver songs as if he's doing it for the first time always impresses me. The Mastersons as guitar and violin accompaniment are excellent; Chris Masterson really has a knack for cool licks and Eleanor, his wife, plays a great fiddle and seemingly every other stringed instrument too (oh, and piano). The band went through a wide range of Steve's songs all the way back to Guitar Town and lots from Low Highway. Great choice of tunes from such a huge repertoire. The sound mix had a problem early on, Steve's voice too buried. It was fixed after an audience member yelled it out. Seems odd that the sound man did not notice.

I really loved this show. Steve's guitar was too loud and he did not play some songs that I wanted to hear. Allison Moorer was really fantastic and she played a very emotional song to her sister (Shelby Lynne) that might have been the highlight of the show. Steve was is a bit if a folk singer/woody Guthrie mood and the set list reflected that. Overall a great night of music and enlightenment from the one and only Steve Earle!!!! See ya next time !!!!

For twenty years, I have loved listening to my Steve Earle tapes (yes younin's, tapes) and CDs, so when I heard he was going to be in town, I jumped at the chance to buy tickets. The theater and acoustics were fabulous and for the first half of the show, we had a good time. His performance of the songs was good, albeit as expected, with no memorable breakout versions. Then, Steve stopped playing and went into a political rant, and went on and on about his personal philosophies. He did play more, but during every break, he yak more about what he does not like about this country and what he thinks needs to change. Perhaps it was my bad for not knowing ahead of time that he was an outspoken dissident, but I thought I was attending a concert, not a political rally. I left feeling annoyed and mislead. Never again Steve.

First I am a frequent flier to Bethel Woods so I was quite shocked at the disappointing evening we had. First I know Steve has a great band and that was what I was expecting. So instead we got an "intimate evening with Steve" no band just Steve we to say the least left feeling we paid to much for the seats. Next we were in the 3rd row only to be blocked all night by speakers and could only see him from the waist down. I was obvious to the 4 of us that we will reconsider these types of concerts at Bethel in the future.

Although I'm not a country fan, Steve Earle's music seems to transcend that genre. His voice has always intrigued me and his songs are catchy and thought-provoking. Listening to him play sounded like a full band behind him and he just seemed to enjoy himself almost as much as we did! At times we wanted to jump up and dance and the evening ended too soon. I love that he uses his public eye as a platform for spreading positive social messages. His story telling and candidness make him all the more real....keep on stompin', Steve!

First we had no idea this was going to be an acoustic show. As for the venue it was beautiful just too many seats so close together you couldn t get comfortable. We never saw Steve Earl in person and were looking forward to what we hear on Outlaw Country XM radio. Instead we were subjected to political left wing redirect and anti democracy songs. He announced he was doing an Obama fund raiser in Brooklyn the following day and made derogatory comments about republicans. We paid to be entertained and were not. As to the music his guitar playing was very good, however most songs you could not understand the lyric s.

Charlie Mars was entertaining and an unexpected delight. Steve Earle gave the fans their money's worth especially since Allison Moorer was not there due to family reasons. He was up there a long time as a solo act. The real downer was that just when you would get into the mood he would start venting about Halliburton, or Dick Cheney, or BP or fracking or how public employee unions are the best thing since sliced bread. Even the folks who agreed with him were probably cringing.

Steve Earle and The Dukes performed another amazing show Tuesday night at The Birchmere. The Dukes are a rock-solid outfit capable of kicking ass as well as, providing softer and often heart-wrenching backing support for Steve's poignant ballads. Fans of Steve were, as always, wildly enthusiastic and happy to have him back for 2 encores. He doesn't disappoint. He played songs from across his catalog including a few new songs slated for release on his upcoming album. Steve is great fun to watch and listen to even when he talks politics. Most in the audience are sympathetic to his personal political views and express their agreement almost unanimously. He inspires in the great troubadour and balladeer traditions of Guthrie, Dylan, Springsteen, etc. We need more artists like them, especially now. Like all true artists, Steve shows us things we can't see ourselves. Bravo Steve!
