Neutral Milk Hotel

This was the best show I've ever seen, hands down. So much raw emotion and passion passed through the music. I somehow feel that I understand NMH's cryptic lyrics a lot better now with that live music context. They also played a good, long encore. It was great! I especially enjoyed seeing Julian Koster's versatility and skill in playing so many instruments well, including a saw (!?), accordion, and guitar. He was also super enthusiastic and charismatic.

Neutral Milk Hotel is the best indie band that you've never heard of because they have played together in 15 years, but their sound is eclectic, magical and melancholy with occasional bursts of psychotic joyfulness.

The most nerdy and cooperative audience you will ever share a show with. No one person recorded or took pictures. Very symphonic sound from a musical genious. Met some of the band members after the show and they were super cool and down to earth. Too bad these guys are too lazy to make new music. You'd think a decade would give you enough time to get your hipster sensibilities together.

Neutral Milk Hotel recently began their 15 tour reunion, I so luckily was able to attend. The moment Jeff Mangnum and Julian Koster walked on stage, it was as if a wace of ecstasy washed through and over me. I never, in my life though i'd be able to see Neutral Milk Hotel live. The concert venue in itself was fantastic, not too big so no matter where you stood, you'd still be able to get a really amazing view of the members onstage. The three tiered setup was marvelous, although i stood at the third tier, I was still able to get an amazing view of my favorite band. Overall, it was one of my best nights and i do hope to see them play again in the distant future, for now, i'm getting rather hyped to return to Madison Theatre to see Animal Collective this winter.

The show was great. Neutral Milk got up there laid down what they got. Sounded just like the records, but oh so much better. It was very cool to see how they produced a lot of the unique sounds they can create. The only reason I gave this show 4 stars was due to the venue. Madison is a dump. Never liked going there. The ceiling would drip water on me every few minutes or so. Bathrooms are in a bad spot. Fortunately they at least have a good venue for the sound, so everything sounded great.

The show was sold-out, so the place was packed. There was a good mix of songs I knew and songs I didn't know. The crowd was signing along. Great for die-hard fans. Made me want to go home and listen to In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. They sounded awesome. Well worth it!

The show was incredible! NMH has lost nothing over the years and played a show that sounded like the albums only better. Elf Power was also a good opening act and kept me entertained until NMH took the stage. I wish I'd bought tickets to see them again in Charlotte.

The only complaint I had was that the set list was too short! Other than that, it was an unforgettable experience. Everyone in the band is so talented and the music sounded so raw. It's just amazing that we all get a chance to see the group perform live after the group disbanded 15 years ago. Highly recommended!

Even after all the years of this band's hiatus, Jeff's unique and awe-inspiring vocal delivery has remained stunningly intact and the band's vibrant energy feels fresh. Perhaps the most important hallmark of any great live act: the band's material comes to life as an uncanny recreation of the record - making the audience feel as if they were bearing witness to the album's actual recording before their very eyes/ears. I hope the band continues to wow audiences wherever and whenever they tour.

Neutral Milk Hotel was amazing. I could have listened to them play for a few more hours! I highly recommend seeing them at any opportunity. The sound quality was mostly very good, although a few times it was too loud to make out which song was being played due to the location of my seat and the speakers. The Mann has a great atmosphere and I love being able to walk around outside before the show. The band played a great mix of songs from "On Avery Island" and "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." My only complaint is that other concert-goers were not respectful of those of us who came to enjoy the music. People were CONSTANTLY leaving and coming back throughout the entire show. In my row and the row in front of me, it was nonstop. A few people were yelling obnoxiously throughout and/or smoking in a way they thought was sneaky. People were also taking photos and video after the band explicitly requested that they refrain from doing so. If the music hadn't been great, this would have annoyed me a lot more.

The concert was amazing, from beginning to end. The staff were extremely friendly & helpful. The merch was reasonably priced and they even helped with recommendations and sizes. The band was phenomenal, they sounded great. Everything was mixed well. I loved the band, they played all the hits that us die hard fans have loved, line by line for years and the band didn't talk too much between songs. :) it was all about the music and honestly, it felt very communal and spiritual. The venue was gorgeous too with the high wooden ceiling & our seats were great!

These dudes were great. They played all the great hits from aero plane and Avery island with some from Ferris wheel on fire. They sounded so great live! It was cathartic hearing all their songs being played out in front of me. Seeing the whole band together having a great time was cool in itself. However, the best part was when Jeff Mangum played acoustic and belted out those heartfelt acoustic ballads. I cannot get over how well he sang, what a guy! Overall, a great night, a great experience, and a great band!

The opening bands were decent. Connections was pretty good despite being super small time. Circulatory System is a good band, but they picked weird songs to play. They have many better ones they could have picked. Neutral Milk Hotel, as expected, was absolutely phenomenal. They played ever song but one that I wanted to hear and blew the crowd away with every one. I couldn't help but sing every song they played. Seriously, I've seen Roger Waters play The Wall live and this MIGHT have been a better show. That's saying something.

I love Neutral Milk Hotel and it was no question they were up there playing their asses off and putting on a great show. In the pit however one would not have known that by listening only. Throughout the show there was slight improvement but overall the sound engineering was sub-par at best. They NEVER got Mangum's vocals eq'd right when he played solo guitar. The band sounded decent as a 3-4 piece but as everyone knows they have a unique sound; adding horns, accordions, and various percussion instruments that are all in similar frequency range requires a good balance or else it all mushes together, which is what happened. I think the band did a good job of recreating the distorted yet coherent sound of their albums, and the sound engineers did not mix it well.

Neutral Milk Hotel's heralded return came as news on a comparable scale to the second coming for the cult following they've garnered. For fans, the show was nothing but stunning. Hundreds of ecstatic audience members sang along throughout the entire course of the show, myself included, basking in the strangely poignant verse of Jeff Mangum's creative powerhouse of a mind. Accompanied by a myriad of horns, stringed instruments, an electric bagpipe, and saws, the show was nothing short of magical, reaching into that secret place that few fans seldom reach into for fear of tainting the canon that has been created by Neutral Milk Hotel.

Neutral Milk Hotel, Friday at Fox Oakland, put on an exquisitely beautiful concert. From the achingly lonely "Two Headed Boy" to the foot stomping "Aeroplane over the Sea," the performance was passionate, tightly arranged, and breathtakingly emotional. This was one of the very best concerts I've been to in my life (and I've been to a lot -- including all the great 60's bands in their heyday). To hear so many songs I've loved -- and listened to over and over -- live for the first time was an amazing gift. This was an unforgettable and moving night with one of the most extraordinary bands -- ever.

Amazing show!!! If you've never seen Neutral Milk Hotel live, they will not disappoint!! The song list was exactly what you would want to hear from them...your favorites, plus a few more obscure songs! A must see while you still can! As far as the venue goes, if you've never been to Hal and Mal's in Jackson, Mississippi, you are missing a true pearl. An unassuming warehouse- part restaurant/part concert hall, boasting awesome food and the coolest music venue ever! The stage is so up close and personal that you can almost reach out and touch the band. Loved that place! Check their schedule to see if your favorite band is playing there, and make the road trip!

Today he is simply a good man playing great music, and I am so sad that this was the first and only time I will get to see him in my home town. He was a truly wonderful kind of spirit to watch perform, and even after the show he was sweet as hell to the few folks that waited outside for him. I happened to watch him speak with a young fan about some rough stuff she'd overcome and he was totally, sincerely, sweet to her. Great music, great talent, I feel very lucky to have seen them all play some of my favorite songs of all time. Thanks for coming up here on this final run! Awesome show. Great to see Neutral Milk after so long. To be honest, they were a little less enthusiastic than I'd hoped, but c'est la vie. They played an amazing set and it was well done. I would have added a forest with snow falling and a slow motion battle staged between unicorns and satyrs, but it was pretty chill anyway... Daniel Johnston was amazing - struggled through the set but sounded surprisingly incredible. His voice and his genuine love for it hasn't aged somehow. The Breeders - solid, beautiful; amazing harmonies

The return of Neutral Milk Hotel is a thing of understandable excitement. They were great live... though they requested that the screens and video feeds used for the benefit of people sitting far from the stage be turned off. Had I known, I certainly wouldn't have shelled out for nicer seats. We were just close enough to regret the extra expense but still too far from the stage to really see anything at all. Had we known ahead of time, we'd have been perfectly happy back in the nose-bleed seats in the back...

So, to start off, it was my girlfriend to told me about the opening acts. I wasn't even aware that Daniel Johnston AND the Breeders were opening up for Neutral Milk Hotel. The show was excellent. Everyone in the crowd was on their feet for the whole concert. The opening acts were well selected, good music. I think my favorite aspect if the show was that when Neutral Milk came on, they didn't use the large screens to project close ups. The screens were off during their set so we couldn't get sucked into not watching the actual performance. It made the show feel like a more small intimate performance, it just happened to be at The Bowl.

I have loved Neutral Milk Hotel for a while and was very excited to see them play. I had no idea what it would sound like live. It turns out it's every bit as frenetic, beautiful, poignant, exciting, and timeless as the records. Jeff Mangums voice sounds like a Yogi shouting truths about the nature of the universe through a megaphone on a mountain top (flawlessly in tune). Julian Koster was energetic, intriguing, and inspiring. I had no idea how much he had contributed to the sound of those recordings. Amazing. The arrangements were great. The band sounded huge, and very tight, and at times very sloppy and on the verge of falling apart. If you're looking for a super tight band full of studio pros that sound flawless and stick very closely to a metronomic time feel then you must not know this band. The fun is in the journey. Jeff's solo tunes were so compelling. What a force of nature. What a voice. If you like this bands recordings at all then I advise you to GO SEE THEM WHILE THEY'RE PLAYING SHOWS!!!!!

Great act, incredible performance. Sounded just as good as the record and a quasi-spiritual experience for me as a fan of theirs. The outdoor venue (prospect park) shut the concert down during a small storm, and asked us to leave. After leaving, the guards became hostile as the crowd attempted to reenter once it became clear that the show was still on.

This is my second Neutral Milk show and they are always an amazing time. Jeff's voice is absolutely piercing, the band's performance is always alive, and the fact that the show was interrupted for twenty minutes due to the lightning, made it an especially memorable evening!!! It just goes to show that when an overflowing and devoted crowd is asked to leave the premises for their own safety and well-being, and not a soul flinches, something truly special is taking place in front of us. And the band put on a SHOW - switching instruments during songs, changing line-ups, and taking turns showcasing individual talent. Rarely do you get to see that kind of talent for the price paid.

I never thought I would see this group play together, so to hear the songs so expertly played was a really powerful experience. NMH are all about the MUSIC, not egos or fame or marketing, which makes a huge difference for music lovers like me. Their musicianship shines!

This concert was fantastic. After waiting many years to see this band, they live up to every expectation. The crowd was very enthusiastic and the band responded in kind, or maybe it was the other way around. The one sour note was that the owner's of the venue had ripped out all the seats with out any warning and turned the theater into a dump

I've been a huge NMH fan since college in the early 00s, and never expected a reunion. This show was everything I could have asked for, as they played every song from In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and most of the songs from On Avery Island. The members of the band were all noticeably excited to be back together and performing again, especially Scott Spillane. Overall a great show.

My life may have just changed a little bit. That s often a lofty statement, one that is honestly made way too often, which tends to drain the life out of any meaning behind that kind of declaration. But in this case, I make no conscious hyperbole in saying this. I just saw Neutral Milk Hotel. Can we just let that sink in? Yes? Okay. I ll give you a moment to do just that. Alright. Now to get back to the review. A friend of mine asked me if the show was everything I imagined. Initially, I told her that it was, and more. Now I m not so sure I can say that truthfully. It s not that the show didn t live up to my hopes of it being an amazing show, because it was amazing beyond words. It was probably one of the greatest shows I will ever see. But that s what was so strange. Strange, like everything else about this band: it was beyond words, beyond what I could have dreamt or expected. Here s the thing: Even as I tried to go into it without any expectations, I felt myself going over in my head all the different possible ways I could be blown away. However, in ways, it certainly was beyond all previous experience as a concertgoer. It was truly different from anything I could have ever possibly expected, looking back on it over twenty-four hours later (as of this writing). But in other ways, it completely challenged my understanding of the band, which is honestly a large reason why I became such a huge fan so quickly after discovering them (albeit a little late: I learned of them after singer Jeff Mangum s surprise appearance at Zuccotti Park during the initial hoopla of the Occupy movement, arguably a grand failure of a generation that so loved the idea of change in a world that seemed immune to change: the movement is seen by many today as an occasion on which one shall not look back with fondness at its results, or lack thereof). The thing about Jeff Mangum as a songwriter is that, lyrically, he is at once inviting as well as completely inaccessible. As a writer, I feel encouraged to let my mind wander and go wherever it may, and then document whatever comes out without worrying very much about editing myself to make whatever I m writing seem more coherent, particularly in my creative writing endeavors that have nothing to do with reviewing a collection of songs or, in this case, a concert. It seems he s not so repellent as to scoff at journalists trying to decipher what makes him tick. Jeff Mangum is a human being humbled by the adoration of fans of his music. Jeff always came off to me as incredibly humble, even awed by how admiring fans are of his generally simple songs, morphing the ingredients of simple chord structures into grandiose songs accompanied by outlandish instrumentation that, arranged as they are, positively soar. This is also evident in the bright tones of Mangum s guitars to back the macabre subject matter. One can t help but feel invited into the wondrous beauty of his soul. And then there is the utterly horrific imagery behind the words that make up the overarching story. Fans will recall that this album is a concept that is about the diary of Holocaust casualty Anne Frank, who perished at just thirteen years of age in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and his reaction to having read the words of the vibrant young lady who paradoxically had angelic hope in a world seemingly devoid of safety from the tyranny of Hitler. She saw beauty where it could not exist legally. His lyrics, while at times describing dark and terrible scenes (no pun intended), many times ultimately give the message of having hope in the face of unimaginable tragedy. To speak of the apparent fantastical story, the aforementioned horrific imagery compounds, mounting one on top of the other, to form a confusing and nearly incoherent story. But it does seem to form a tapestry, the phantasmagorical dancing with the more historical parts, even going so far as to merge completely, until the two are indistinguishable, all to make a narrative that is, in the end, perhaps easier to deal with. His attitude seems to be a mixture of lamentation and blinding rage towards those who committed the horrible atrocities during World War II, but it comes off in a subtle way, which is certainly not conducive to mainstream radio play. Not in a world that was just discovering hothead aggro-metal a la Godsmack or Linkin Park. The show itself did not disappoint, either, not one bit. Especially when considering that the band has not played together in roughly fifteen years. Even more impressive is the fact that, in one interview, Jeff revealed that they hardly ever practiced when they were an active band. A band with a sound such as theirs does not necessarily benefit from intense, hours-long practice sessions, anyway. They may have practiced a little bit when coming together for their reunion, but I suspect there wasn t too much preparation, because it still felt satisfyingly unpolished. The energy was there, the songs were definitely there (they pulled out a couple of startling surprises, including material that predates their first proper album, On Avery Island), and, most importantly, the joy was there. The stage was modest in its setup, save the myriad instruments spread across the stage. The members were in high spirits, and the crowd was exuberant at the very prospect, from the very moment the lights went down and Jeff stepped onto the stage by himself to perform one of their biggest songs, Two-Headed Boy . Then, without missing a beat, they headed directly into the next song, chronologically the next song on the album, The Fool , a funeral march sort of tune that still carries with it the soaring sense of whimsy for which the band came to be additionally known. They continued to steamroll through the set with nearly every song (save Communist Daughter ) from their landmark sophomore album, the indie colossus known as In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. On this album, Jeff and co. had managed to achieve the status of understated legends, a relic buried and lost to the sudden reclusion of Jeff in 2000. In between these hits, the band sprinkled early favorites like Song Against Sex and Everything Is , and, as I said, a surprise or two, specifically the song Rubby Bulbs , which is a rare song not found anywhere. They ended the set with another song not found on any of their releases, as they didn t even record the song properly, but which managed to receive nearly the same praise as Aeroplane. The band was entirely dedicated to driving home every percussion strike, every chord strum, every warble produced, and every ghostly howl via bow and saw, as if it meant just as much to them that night as it did when they first committed their efforts to tape. They seemed interested in trying to recreate (the best they could) the experience of that first time listening to Aeroplane, though personalized and individual the affair may be for everyone. The band, as I said, were in high spirits, were entirely gracious and maybe more than a little surprised. Julian Koster made sure to thank the crowd in between songs, more than once. Scott Spillane was perhaps in the highest spirits, or maybe he just loves the songs almost as much as Jeff. I glanced over at him several times throughout the night, and every time I did, there he was swaying to the music and singing along to the lyrics when he didn t have the horn to his lips. It was quite a beautiful experience all the way through, one of the most magical things I ve ever seen, really. I would put this one in my top 3 for favorite shows. And honestly, this is a big reason for why I m writing this review. Few things in life have made me feel so inspired as this show. I m particularly inspired because I ve been a rabid fan of the band for only less than half a decade. Let s hope that we ve not seen the last of them, but I ll not hold my breath for a repeat, or some other surprise. Seeing this band really made me realize just how strange indeed it is to be anything at all.

NMH played most of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and some older songs as well. It was a fun, lively, and creative show that was all I expected and more. I would go again without a doubt.

I was unfamiliar with the band but my fiancé was a long-time fan, so the tickets were a gift for him. The band was great live - I love big orchestrations, so anytime you're throwing a banjo, saw, accordion, trumpet, and French horn into the mix, you're probably going to make me happy. Definitely would see again!

This show was absolutely amazing. I was cautiously optimistic when I heard NMH was re-forming to do a tour, and this show exceeded every expectation I had. Having seen Jeff Mangum on his solo tour rather recently, I wasn't sure if I "needed" to see NMH, but I'm so glad I bought a ticket. NMH hold a very dear place in my heart. I'm not a super-fan, though I truly love Avery Island and Aeroplane and hearing songs from these albums was a real treat. Moreover, I have always admired Mangum for being honest with us fans about his need to shed the limelight for a while in order to take care of some personal business. I think that time allowed him to retain the performance intensity that these songs require and that intensity was on display at this show. So, a huge thanks to Jeff and the band for bringing to life their music with all of the honesty and beauty I was hoping for. If you have even a passing interest in their music, I would recommend seeing them live.

I had only the most removed, abstract idea what this show would be like. Years of listening to their records and accepting them as a long lost, sorely overlooked treasure of underground music made it unreal for me to conceive of seeing them live. I purchased the tickets, came to the orpheum and took my seat thinking I was prepared to see Neutral Milk Hotel. Completely mistaken was I. As Jeff Mangum walked up on stage, I felt the tight fist of trouble clench in my chest and the moment he struck the opening cords of "King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 2" I broke open into a sobbing, sniveling mess. I wept and heaved openly for the first five or six songs, a complete emotional wreck. Never have I been so emotionally blindsided. Neutral Milk Hotels performance was the most cathartic experience I've had at any music venue. I still find my reaction to it surprising and inexplicable. Sublime. It was purely sublime.

I loved seeing Neutral Milk Hotel. The variety of instruments and the intensity of the performance was really outstanding. The Bassist was crazy! He played everything from the saw(yes the saw) to a banjo with a bow and he was intense on the bass guitar. The mixture of horns, acoustic and electric instruments and the drums really blew me away. I would certainly recommend them to anybody who loves music.

Electric! Eccentric! Hypnotic! I would dare to call it Genius. Heretofore unimagined instrumentation, vocals of supernatural power, soaring melodies, Tolkienesque cavorting onstage. I hope Jeff can find deliverance in his music; he should know that we do.
