Neko Case

Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category.

I drove over six hours after working the overnight shift just to see Neko Case and she did not disappoint. Even though she was under the weather, Neko made your favorite singer look like a bag of crap. When she couldn't quite hit a note she normally would, the amazing Kelly Hogan was there to pick up the slack.

Neko came out looking like she had slept in her gardening clothes, woke up maybe 10 minutes before show time and ran an eggbeater through her hair..........then proceeded to sing like an angel. Playful and funny on stage, no complaints here with her, only minor quibbles with the venue, such as stuffiness in the standing area .

Neko's voice sounds as powerful and pure in concert as it does on her recordings. Her band is comprised of very good musicians, and her background singer complemented Neko very well (she's on the recordings too) and constantly entertained the audience with silly comments between songs. They played songs from across her solo career, although I could have used a few more from 'Blacklisted'. Highly recommended.

Neko and her band are amazing! I would have gone to see her two days in a row if I could have. She was laughing and joking around. Her band mates are great too!!! Truly incredible voices and songs.

Neko was funny and beautiful and I would love to see her again. But her opening act Imaad Wasif was so important. I loved his set and the music and I saw him at the after show which was also great.

I have mixed feelings about her new album but played live it took on a dreamy psychedelic feel. The band was tight and seemed to genuinely enjoy one another. Very pretty music and Neko's amazing voice. She is just dark enough to be interesting. An artist moving to the top of her career. I expect more good to come from Neko.

The show was wonderful; Neko seems to be a very down-to-earth, likable person all around, as well as being talented. The venue (McMenamins Crystal Ballroom) was way too hot though...spacious, comfortable, friendly staff... but good lord!! they needed to crack some windows, turn on the AC or some fans or something.

This concert was not worth the money!!! It was a poor venue: it should have been somewhere that you could sit down (I never once was able to see the stage). Neko case played for maybe an hour- pathetic. She is a wonderful singer- but it would have been easier to stay home, put her albums on shuffle and close my eyes.

Neko was engaging, if a bit shy, but interacted well with her band and back up singers. She sang old songs and new songs and read the crowd well. She couldn't stop messing with her hair which was probably a nervous tick of sorts.

This was my daughters first concert. She anticipated Neko coming on to stage with a glimmer in her eye. When the band came out, my daughter leaned over to me and said "She's just like us, not all fancy like on television". This was a good initial summary of the whole evening to follow. The band played good songs and kept it quite real, interjecting talk of the local area and things they had done. They were at ease and made the audience laugh. There were a few times the concert was a bit boring, like when songs were played at a much slower tempo then on their albums. A decent concert indeed.

Neko is great and the Greek is always great, but the stage presence was really lacking. Beyond a couple new songs and a little instrumentation, it was much like just playing the CD. I have to say her backup singer was quite odd, always talking over Neko and hogging the mic! We came for Neko!!

This was only the second time I've seen her and if Jens Lekman wasn't in town the following night, I would have been back for the second Neko show. She is absolutely amazing. The show was a terrific mix of old stuff I never thought I'd hear live and stuff off the new album.

Standing on my feet for 2 hours was never more worth it. I wished it never ended. There's something so classic and timeless and Neko's music and hearing it/her in person was beyond words, more like something you have to breath in and let it become a part of you forever.

Very disappointing and unenthusiastic performance by Neko Case. While I am (or was) a big fan of her music, she brought zero passion to the stage. As a result, her impressive lyrics fell flat. I'm a huge believer that a band/musician should be better live than they are recorded and this was just not the case. Unfortunately, this show tainted my love for the artist, so I don't think I'll be buying any more of her albums for a while.

I was very excited to see this show on the strength of her lastest album. For the most part it was an good show, the musicianship was top notch, singers excellent. The downside was the length of the show, although I was happy with the choice of songs, my biggest complaint was that the show was too long considering the lack of diversity of style/sound. It would have been a great show if it was 30 minutes shorter. There was a lot of on stage banter going on which I always find annoying, but that is just me, although it did fill time during too many guitar tunings and some of it was very funny. I don't think I would race to another Neko Case show based on this one, even if the album she was promoting was great. She is quite an adequate performer and musician, quality songwriter, but she needs to diversify her sound a bit.

i have been listening to neko case for ten years, i have a live album of hers on which she is phenomenal, but on the day i saw her it was like she was too tired or sick or something to give the show i (and an entire sold out ogden) paid for. i felt like she gave almost zero variety, almost every song was from middle cyclone, she barely used her amazing voice, there was almost no showmanship, she pretty much just stood there and her back up singer did most of the conversing with the crowd. the audience was so low energy people were yawning and looked ready for bed! i can't think of a time i have left a show early it was so bad but i left early for this one. i would not pay money to see her perform again.

My job was swallowed up by the economic downturn. I rationaiized spending the money on this show by saying "I need the escape and the inspiration rght now, more than ever", so there was a lot of pressure on this night, for everything to go right :) and it did. Once again, I was lifted out of reality and into the world that Neko creates on stage. Songs that cause complete strangers to turn to each other and say "oh my gosh... do you LOVE this??" Having Joey and John on this tour was bliss. I stood heel to toe wth a packed floor of both Neko and Calexico veterans and those who asked "who are those two guys opening? are they local?" With a limited budget for shows, I choose carefully. I rationalize when I have to, but always hope to be transported for a few hours. Music is that magic carpet. Neko, is the ultimate navigator of dreams.

Neko was undoubtedly fabulous. I wish she would have played Red Rocks. I had to leave this concert after 4 songs because the venue literally stunk (smelt) and it was unbearably hot. I've been at other similarly crowded events at The Ogden where you could feel the A/C some. At this show, even moving around to different locations and close to the doors, I couldn't take the heat and smell, and left in frustration. I hope the Ogden is shut down. For inside shows, I prefer the Fillmore, The Paramount, and Wells Fargo Theater.

the ogden is a cozy place in it's own right, but the addition of neko case and her merry band of musicians, along with the duo of calexico, made something cozy into something more like a dream. neko case is a superlative live performer, and her backing band is nothing short of awe-inspiring. i can think of no better way to spend an evening: listening to a siren sing her songs, with goosebumps (and sometimes a lump in the throat) from the sheer beauty of it all.

I got my girlfriend tickets to this show for Christmas. It was really great, and we were definitely pleased. The show was at the Civic in New Orleans and we got seats up in the balcony, which is awesome. We were able to see everything. The sound mixing on the opener was pretty terrible, but it was obvious when NEKO came on that they have a sound guy who knows what he's doing. Her sound was spot on in comparison with the album. Great, relaxed stage presence. She was casually funny at some choice moments between songs. Played to best songs from her recent album.

From the opening song to the two(!) encores, this show was simply amazing. Neko's vocals are stunning and are reinforced by the equally-talented Kelly Hogan. Neko sang a lot - it was a long set of both new and older songs - and every performance was superb. It was fun to watch Jon Rauhouse effortlessly switch between various instruments. I would recommend anyone see Neko Case. She truly has something to offer to everyone, no matter what type of music you enjoy.

I have loved Neko Case for many years... She is bold, she is gritty, her voice is a great mix of gorgeous and unusual, she writes her own songs, she doesn't try to sound like everyone else, but, BUT, I was very disappointed with her show. It was tired, it was short and it was hard to understand/hear Neko very well. It may have been an issue related to the instruments overpowering her, but shouldn't there be some kind of sound quality control about that? Anyway, I still like Neko but don't know that I'll be dishing out funds to see her live in concert again very soon. At least not in a large venue. Her opening act, on the other hand, was a lovely surprise. Lucy Wainwright Roche. I've already bought tickets to see her when she is back in town.

Even though she didn't feel well, Neko Case gave all to ensure a good timefor her adoring audience. From singing her heart out with that remarkable voice to joking with back-up singer Kelly Hogan about needing a B12 shot, there was not a flawed moment. Neko was at ease, and seemed genuinely joyful to be playing to a NC crowd, even dedicating a number (her new "The Pharaohs" aka "Blue Blue Baby") to local legend Dexter Romweber.

From start to finish, this band was tuned in and turned on. What a clear heart-piercing voice Neko Case has. Her guitarists were incredible, the background singer Kelly was hysterical, and the onstage banter was quick-witted and humorous. Some of the funnier moments include Neko responding to a fan's comment that her firey red dress was fabulous by telling the crowd she purchased it at "Cougars R Us." She also referenced the demographic crossover of her fans and Metallica's. (There was only one crossover fan in attendance.) Highlights: This Tornado Loves You, Vengeance is Sleeping

Neko case was great, I had seen her with the new pornographers and after her fantastic new album dropped (middle cyclone), I knew I had to see her at a more intimate venue. I road tripped with some freinds and relavties and saw a great show. Jason Lytle of grandaddy opened, which was awesome. Neko came out and went right into maybe sparrow, and the whole show just snowballed with greatness after that.cher band was great, I beleive there was 17 guitars on stage at one point, ranging from lap steel to upright bass, to banjo to a sweet 60's tele. five star performance. Just saw Neko Case at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, and 4 nights earlier in Santa Rosa at the Luther Burbank. Both shows featured Neko's exquisite singing, beautifully complimented by Kelly Hogan's perfectly enchanting harmonies, not to mention Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel and the rest of the band. A friend of mine described Neko's singing at the Fox as "flawless," and I can only agree. Neko has her own distinctive songbook aa well as her style of singing, and I was mesmerized by her during the whole performance each night. There's a mystical quality to Neko's performances that is once again very much her own. I got to sit in the front row in Santa Rosa, and I took advantage of the opportunity by focusing on how those gorgeous sounds come out of her mouth! Though I've seen her around 30 times, Neko Case still slays me!

I've been a longtime fan of Neko Case but had never seen her live before. I had high hopes for a concert at the Chicago Theater. Unfortunately, although Neko and her band were great, and the audience attentive, the concert was marred by sub-par sound. I was sitting literally a few feet from the sound board and was tempted to get up and ask the operator what the heck he was doing. The balance was completely off: Too much guitar (not Neko's) and drums, not enough vocal, and hardly any bass at all.

She clearly has a remarkable voice, and her down-to-earth persona is very endearing. She's also not afraid to take risks, which resulted in some of the evening's finest moments. I have been a huge fan, based only on a familiarity with the half dozen of her songs that have gotten significant radio play. Alas, her resume turns out to be rather thin beyond that. There is a repetitive quality to the way she structures her melodies, with the result that many of the songs end up sounding vaguely alike. There was also very little musicianship on display, as there was almost no soloing at all on the part of her back-up musicians. They seemed capable, but it's an act that's all about the vocals, and that leaves a bit of a hole in the overall experience. She worked hard. I'd give the performance a B-.

This was a really fun date night for us. Neko's voice is lovely, and her band is professional and accomplished. She played a lot of favorites, and varied the songs from rocking to slow, full band to duets. My only criticism is that I wish she and the band had jammed together a bit more; the songs were polished but a bit bloodless, and definitely on a time clock. However, she did play several encores, and that's where the performance loosened up a little. The Chicago Theatre is a fantastic venue--ornate decor; good drinks; popcorn; and a casual feel. Very relaxing for these harried working parents!

I've seen Neko about 4 or 5 times now - including a couple of block parties. Each time I've seen her I thought it was better than the previous. I think she has grown a lot in songwriting and performance and this concert covered the widest range of emotion for me. I really didn't realize how much I like the new album until I heard some of it played live. I have to believe that she is acquiring new fans with each tour/album. I don't know what value radio play has anymore - but I'm guessing she's underplayed.

This was my first time seeing her in Chicago, last time around was in St. Louis Missouri October 2013 and it was such a memorable performance. Neko Case, Kelly Hogan and band are phenomenal at performing together. Love that she interacts with her audience, i.e., jokes, and being just her plain witty self i.e., kicking off her shoes, forewarning on those words that may be offensive. Her energy is a very positive one and I'm so happy to have come across her musical talent. Hope one day she can offer a meet and greet, I'd pay to be at her side and her band members.

This is my first time seeing Neko Case and she is a fantastic vocalist and her music is wonderful! Kelly Hogan is a master at supporting and blending and it was a real delight to hear her as well. My only hesitation with giving this show 5 stars is that the venue was just maybe too big for the group. A lot of the time between songs it was a bit awkward as Neko changed guitars and tuned them, which is okay in bit smaller spaces, like Lincoln Hall, for example. The show was sold out so there is obviously a demand there, but I would rather see her do a couple shows at a place like Lincoln Hall or even Park West.

Neko Case was an entertaining show. Her voice was great and the band was tight. One could tell they were a seasoned act. I would pay to see her again.

Neko Case may be one of the most talented and diverse artist that you will rarely hear on the radio. Mass media can't figure out what "box" to put her in, so they have left her out, which seems fine to her as long as she can do what she does and some of us stuble across her work and appreciate it.

It was a lovely evening with the city lights shinning bright in the spring night. As we approach this theater there it was on the outside in big black letters as clear as can be "Neko Case". My first time really being aquatinted of the music, name, songs, character , and performance. It was a gift to my girlfriend which she has followed her music since her teens and the present. She's a big fan. As we walked into the theater it was love at first sight. Everyone was feeling good and it was understood that there was a something good brewing this night. As the first band came and went. There was a quick intermission . Then the performance started and within the first seconds of hearing Miss. Neko I knew then that she is a great musician, songwriter , proformer , SINGER, of our time. I'm into a lot of old music blues, jazz, folk , country, etc..... I was just glad to be there enjoying these epic moments of such a gem. Also I failed to mention that the band was really good and her back up singer whom complimented her really well as well as the band were beautiful.

Neko is beautiful, funny and her musicality is stunning. The backup band was rock solid. The dodos were a fine lead in.

Neko blew the house down! Her voice was spectacular, and the song choices were varied and lovely. The Orpheum was the perfect Jew-boxed setting to her show. The band was incredible, and I just loved every moment!

Great Show overall! Only minor downside was the fact that Neko had a cold but it didn't effect her singing much.

We loved the concert! Neko Case is awesome and she has a fantastic band! DPAC was nice and all the usher etc. were so nice and helpful. Our first trip to Durham in awhile and loved exploring the downtown. We hit...Fullsteam, MotorCo., The Bar, Cuban Revolution, Mellow Mushroom, the Scrap Exchange. Stayed at Carol's Garden B&B. We loved it all and will back for more fun in Durham! from Charlotte!

Very good show. Thoroughly enjoyable, despite her voice being affected by illness. But way too loud!

Neko's set list was perfectly balanced between newer/older, ballads/rockers and band banter/audience interaction. Add her flawless vocal abilities and the template for a top notch small concert hall, limitations and all, performance was remarkably established immediately. It's amazing that she isn't commanding larger venues considering her talents.

Saw her at Ponte Vedra Convert Hall, the venue was alright, I would have liked to sit down a few times but there was only standing room. Had to pay for parking which i didn't realize and had to scrounge for 5.00 in change. Other than that, the show was so good. Soulful, sexy, moody, and Neko Case's interaction with the audience and the band was light hearted and comical. Loved it!

The show was good... not great. Neko was sick but performed incredibly regardless. Her voice was impressive, and I loved the songs I knew. Others were a little slow. The crowd was a little mellow, not much dancing. Biggest annoyance was the enforcer in the crowd yelling at people who took pictures. I appreciate the audience not holding up cameras to video the entire show, but a picture here and there is less distracting than a large security guard taking people's phones.

Audience members who insisted on taking flash pictures with their phones despite Neko's request not to caused a serious disruption to the show and set a vibe that was hard to erase. If felt bad for Nekio and the band. I hope they return to Cincinnati. Does everyone have to photograph and post everything? These are the same folks who take pictures of their meal and post it. Aargh!!!

Warm up act (female singer) was great! Downhill after that with Neko Case in a surly mood and ruined the atmosphere of the show.

We were so happy that Neko was coming back to the tri-state area. Karen Elson was on for about 70 minutes, very good. Finally Neko comes out around 10pm (on a week night) and ten minutes later starts her rant about cellphone photos. Yes, Neko, it was 'fucking annoying', but so was your rant. What a prima donna! So what songs she sang were WONDERFUL, but we were getting into our car at 11pm. $45 for less than hour, including the ranting?! That just may be our last Neko concert. Neko, go home, do your laundry and touch-up those roots.
