First, I was so impressed that all 8 members could play so many different instrument at the same time as they were moving around, singing and acting out a story. Of course I loved the music which is what brought me there. In addition the set design was so interesting that i was constantly seeing something new to focus on. The story was light but enjoyable which is fine b because it was the overall experience that really was awesome. Second, the cast just seemed so happy and enjoying themselves doing their thing. It was clearly not work for them but a chance to have fun and entertain others. Also the one weirdo actor ( :)) ) with the Afro was having fun engaging the audience members which made it feel inclusive. Bottom line it is a great night of entertainment. Thanks

I have loved the Grateful Dead forever. I disliked this show so much. Although the cast clearly has talent - it felt like the show was something you could have seen in Disney. It is hard to believe that anyone associated with the Band was onboard with this production. Disappointment is an understatement.

What a great time! Admittedly, I am a Dead fan from way back, so of course I'm going to love the music. But I also brought my 87 year old mother along, and yeah, she's pretty cool, but she loved it even more than I did! The actors are so talented, sing so well, and have so much energy. We walked out of the theater feeling so happy!

I am a Deadhead, and although I enjoyed the music and was intrigued by the concept of stringing together the songs with a story that took place in the Cumberland Mine, the dialogue was terrible. I wished there was a lot less talking and a lot more music. The performers were talented musicians but not actors.

This show incorporates some of the best loved songs of the Grateful Dead with an off kilter story about a family of poker playing swindlers who run a saloon in 1920's Cumberland. The best moments come when the emotional maturity of the story matches that of the song and lyric, or when the buoyancy of a song matches the silliness of the story or the action and enthusiasm of the actors/dances/singers. The segment using Brokedown Palace as an example of the former works very well, as does the rollicking Bertha. The story line isn't developed enough to get the audience really invested in the characters, which I think is a problem and needs some further development. Some of the songs seem to just be thrown into the show because they're known to be loved by Dead Heads and great songs, but don't fit into the too slim story line of the show. Touch of Grey at the end, while good fun, is completely superfluous, and more effort should go into putting more emotional detail into the plot. The stage set is a beautiful wood saloon which reminded me of the set of Once The Musical, and the cast is a talented mostly young group who sing dance and play instruments. All in all this is a very enjoyable show. An extra star given for Dead Heads. For the casual listener to Grateful Dead music, this show puts the lovely songs into a unique context that makes them maybe more approachable than might be the case in a concert setting.

Did not know what to expect.. Turns out to be a high school quality written show of a story centered around the lyrics and images of Cumberland Blues...It has basic covers of partial songs and a story line that has nothing to do with the Dead, their roots, existence, or Jerry. For me a high note ( pun intended) was that each actor is very musically talented, playing several instruments...I thought the play would be a more personal look at perhaps some key moments in the Dead's history turned into a theatrical explanation/exploration/enlightenment...It really has nothing to do with the Dead at all except for the partial renditions of some songs...So for $88 for a decent seat I'd say if you can swing it, sure go check it out. Otherwise don't get anxiety over missing it, like you would,if you couldn't get off work and had to pass on a ticket to see the band "In the Day" at Red Rocks on the night of an eclipse...

As a lifetime fan of the Grateful Dead, this show was an absolutely magical experience. Most of the cast is probably too young to have ever seen Jerry Garcia in concert, but they do an amazing job bringing the songs to life and creating a fun, singalong worthy experience for everyone. Not only can this cast sing and dance and act, each member also plays no fewer than four instruments throughout the show, further proving how talented they are. It is a beautiful performance that will make you laugh, cry, sing, dance and be absolutely blown away. I hope it travels. I hope they make an album.

Music was very well performed. Good selections. Ripple was my only knock - it should be performed by the band not a solo. The story is awful/stupid and the acting and dancing was embarrassingly bad - unless you like constant shoving and jumping in lieu of a coherent dialogue. The southern accents sounded like something a 10 year old would sound like if you ask them to do an imitation. Further you couldn't hear half of what the actors said as they were poorly miked (maybe this was a good thing)

As a Deadhead I feared the worst but hoped very much for the best. My fears were realized. Cartoonish, horribly over acted, and aside from very nice versions of Ripple and Box of Rain the music had absolutely no heart or connection to the actors. The music of the Grateful Dead deserves better, and so do you. Save your money and put on any live or studio recording of the Dead and you'll have a far better time.

The play was so much fun. It was nice the way they were able to put the songs to a story line. They have on both sides of the theater stand up and boogie seating. This play is so much fun. Light on story, but who cares. The cast will be among the best performers you will experience. Beautiful voices and amazing skills on a number of instruments. For a Dead Head, it is an excellent presentation of the music we all loved for years. The plot is a little hinkie, but some of the music is a total change from traditional presentation. For me, the show stopper was the female duet of Brokedown Palace, accompanied by cello and acoustic guitar!! If you are looking for loud heavy metal, avoid. If you love the 30s, 40s and 50s music that inspired (and was covered by) the Dead, this is a don't miss show.

Bottom line, the Gig is that the folks who put together the show, and the folks who performed it, are BEYOND talented!!!... We left at intermission. I am a x-pro dancer/actor and have seen hundreds of shows. I have never walked out of a show before because I always find something to enjoy. The show itself was one of the most boring shows I have ever seen. Not to insult the talent but it was so overacted. I am not sure if that is because of bad directing or some of the cast were that bad. The musicians were very good and if they had just stuck to playing music it would have been so much better. I would give the music 4stars and the acting/play 1 star. Also we had first row seats which are suppose to be the best seats in the house. The stage was 5 feet above my head so we had to look way up to see, looking up actors noses. They should never put anyone in the first 5 rows.

Great comcept and If you are a dead head you really enjoyed it because you love the music. I thought the sets were great! If you were there for a show with character development, depth of plot etc.. you would be disappointed. While I think it could be done very well with a bit more script development. I think the actors broad talents were fantastic, although again the actual acting was a bit lacking, while musical talents were great.

This off Broadway play somehow managed to use grateful dead lyrics and music and come together with a storyline into the play. The musicians and singers were very very good but the storyline was god awful. They somehow managed to take Grateful Dead songs and lyrics and make a play out of it but the writing was absolutely terrible. The cast was very talented , good singers and good musicians but kind of a waste of talent. Definitely a good time and had some entertainment value .

A highbred a Broadway show in us and grateful dead songs is a strange idea to begin with and into it poorly written story about a 1920s coal mine and I was looking at my watch it was missing the whole spirit of the Grateful Dead or dead show. I got the idea that the singers in the band never heard of the grateful dead before they audition for the show

I love going to the theatre. It s a place I can escape the world and be enveloped in a story and enjoy. RRGG is one of those. Taking the words and music of Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and intertwining them to create the background to the story of a con man in the 20 s seemed to fit like a glove! The performers are phenomenal, each richly talented in both acting and music. I danced for most of the show because it made me feel good!!!
