This was my second time ever at the Apollo. First time watching Esperanza performing. I had listened to the album only a couple of times before the show...but nothing would've prepared me for this. She was so good she actually prompted me to write a review, something I've never done before. I was hoping she'd play more after her album set, but that's okay. It was more than I expected already. I can't wait to see her again.

The concert as a whole was amazing. The music, lighting and atmosphere was awesome. The venue's parking was a rip off when I could have parked across the street for free at the mall. The venue's seating was a little cramped, if you didn't have a middle seat be prepared to stand up for late comers or alcoholics. The venue itself was gorgeous. Terri Lyne Carrington's set seemed a little understated on that huge stage for her and three other musicians. But when they started playing, my goodness. She's an great drummer and their performance just helped set the mood for Esperanza's set. I highly recommend seeing her perform. It's one thing to hear her play, but to see the whole band, to see her skills on the bass while singing, to see that hair, it's all just a phenomenal experience.

Her performance was one of the best performances I've seen in years. She was very engaging, vocals were perfection and she was a beast on bass. She had an incredible band with an 8 piece horn section that complimented her well.

I went to see what the hype was all about and she really is talented. Although jazz is not my favorite type of music she did make jazz interesting. I don't know if I would go see her again just because a night of all jazz music was just a bit redundant for me. Her piano player was amazing he played two and sometimes four keyboard instrument during the same song.

She...is...AWESOME! She just doesn't play instruments, she makes them come alive as though they're an extension of her body! She can get funky, play soul, jazz but also get soft and smooth if she wants. She is an all-around talent with skillful bandmates and she will go very far at such a young age! Her show is definitely worth it! BTW, I took my wife for our anniversary and she loved the show as well! Highly recommended!

She was incredible, she played with complete confidence. You could feel how much she exuded the music. And her musicians went with her so well. It was the drummers first time gigging with her and he did an awesome job. The pianist played some really out there stuff, really dug it. Awesome job Esperanza.

Magical!!!!!! I've seen Esperanza two times in three months and both concerts were totally different set lists one was a four piece and the other a trio. Both were magical! As a professional jazz singer and guitariast, I know how hard it is to sing and play an instrument at the same time. The bass is so much more difficult to play and sing with. She is incredible as a singer and as a Bass player but what she does with the combination, to me is breathtaking, and awe-inspiring.

This is the best kept secret to come along in decades... she's infusing jazz with new blood and a new energy and originality that I haven't seen since the days of Miles Davis. I just attended Esperanza's concert in Clearwater, and it was surreal! Not only can she play the hell out of the bass guitar, but her lyrics are deliberately thoughtful and poignant. She shows her true self throughout the show through storytelling and demonstration. It's an awesome fusion of art and music, just as the music blends jazz, rock, funk, and latin influences. This is not your average show and it is not meant to be. She is seeking truth and only a TRUE fan will appreciate this. I do recommend reading or listening to the lyrics beforehand; it will help you be able to appreciate the music much more than those who are ignorant of them. She is revealing, relevant, remarkably whimsical, and relatable. Esperanza challenges the status quo of religion, race, social status, gender, love, marriage, and education. I had to find a way to write this review; the show was just that good to me. I sat in the second row and met her after the show. She is down-to-earth and is very personable. If you're looking for something new, go to the show. If you're interested in what most in society are listening to, don't think about going, This is a show for those who wish to progress, transcend, live, and learn new things. Thank you, Esperanza, for the great time and unforgettable music experience! We love you!

I had such high hopes for this concert and the evolution of Esperanza's alter ego, but form the very outset, this show smacked of self indulgent musings of a college student torn between her passions and conformity. With a terrible sound setup that distorted all but a few words and kept issuing feedback during the silent "dramatic" moments, the show felt more like something that Esperanza and her college friends cooked up one night while drunk rather than the polished performances I've come to expect from her. Her musicianship is still without question - the highlight of the show was a long jam between her and the lead guitarist, but other than that, I felt like it was an evening wasted.

I do not own any Spaulding records. I found what I heard online interesting. I heard so much about her I decided to try a show. She was interesting live also. Music was a mix of progressive and fusion jazz, at least in my view. There was a little performance art as she and her backing group (guitarist, drummer, three back up singers, one of the singers did a little keyboard playing) introduced songs with brief skits. The skits only worked sometimes. Ms. Spaulding danced and bopped around the stage. Her voice was stronger with more range than I expected. She was best when just jamming with her two musicians. She is known for playing double bass, but she only played electric bass. She played a little piano also. She did play well on both instruments. Most disappointing, the set only lasted about 1hr. 15 minutes. I would have liked more music.

A disclosure was required regarding what this "performance" was really about and yet there was none. As a result we were ambushed!!!! Albeit a very passionate and energetic performance, the sound quality was so garbled -\u2014honestly only 1 or 2 words out of every lyric were understandable! This was no musical performance either, was a Shakespearean play or sorts I think. My favorite moment was realizing many or couples were equally as confused & leaving within the first 30 minutes. We endured for an hour, but not a second longer.

Purchased tickets for a birthday gift for my boyfirend who is a jazz fan. Not only did she start an hour late, the music was nothing like her original Jazz days. It was a storyline that we didn't understand, lots of loud electric bass, a weird puppet show and no interaction with the audience at all. The venue was standing only and got very crowded and hot, so the delay made that even more uncomfortable. We stayed for the entire 1 hour, 1 song encore show, again another disappointment. When we left we were confused at what we just saw. She didn't even bother to hit some of her older stuff that everyone feel in love with in the first place. Will not be purchasing tickets for her show again.

Aside from her showing up a hour late without a opening act I was not impressed with the sound quality or her dancing around like a fairy. I am a huge Esperanza fan, and I was highly disappointed in this show. Most artists with such an impressive catalog of music as she would perform their music/songs that made people fall in love with them, but she didn't. Don't get me wrong, her vocals and musicianship were impeccable, but the songs from her new album are horrible!! The theme of the show was very confusing, it did not flow, and she seemed to be a bit spaced out. She did not engage the crowd AT ALL. She was talking, but I'm not sure who she was talking to (the voices in her head, maybe). This is the first time I've ever walked out on a concert. I read mixed reviews, and I should have saved my money. Don't make the same mistake I made... SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Spaldings concert was a huge disappointment! We, as many others in the audience left before intermission (I had never done that before). We came expecting this talented artist's jazz bass and vocals and received loud rock music, mostly her playing electric guitars, unintelligible lyrics, and interpretive dance. In fact, I never saw her bass on stage. Don't go to this concert if you are expecting the jazzy Esperanza Spalding: it will be a waste of your time and money.

I absolutely adore Esperanza...so amazingly talented. I was expecting something experimental and unique but it was a mess....from beginning to end. I didn't say a word after the concert began and anxiously awaited a climax...for the experience to get better but it didn't. It was bizarre, disjointed, and disorganized. After a few songs, my friend and I looked at one another and we both were so puzzled and expressed our dislike of the music. It was so different from the Esperanza that people adore. I 'm unsure of what category the music fit under. There were a couple good songs but my friend and I were overall, very disappointed. We wanted to get up and leave early but were sitting in the front row. I understand her wanting to be more versatile and cover many genres but this was an unsuccessful attempt. Esperanza...Guuuuurrrrllll, let's try it again. xoxoxoxo

My first time seeing Esperanza live. Was one of the best shows ever. She's a true artist that feels and translates her music. My only complaints are the show was only about 1 hour 10 minutes long, and she only did one song for her encore then just left the stage with no good-bye or anything to make us feel appreciated. But overall, the show was great and I will continue to support her career.

It was my third time seeing Esperanza and each time has been unique onto itself. She is always the virtuoso bassist and jazz vocalist whether she is performing her own material or bringing her interpretation to another. This time, in Emily's D-Evolution she has assembled a very theatrical performance-art "story" beginning with tossing aside the diploma that documents her (their, perhaps our) education and perhaps allowing herself to devolve. What ensues are a series of little vignettes or scenes featuring her (their) incredible jazz performances. High energy. Powerful. Brilliant. For my taste the music was spectacular and her musicians were just plain brilliant. But it wasn't appreciated by everyone. After a few pieces several "older" couples got up and left. I can safely say "older" because I am 69 myself. In all fairness this is Cleveland and LeBron was playing in game 6, so there were a number of fidgety complaining men at least in in the men's room. Some were hoping for a more "Latin" performance. I think the somewhat less than enthusiastic audience might have been sensed by Esperanza as after the great encore (Joni Mitchell) she pretty much just exited stage left without a bow.

I have never left a concert early, but my wife and I along with many other audience members did so for the Esperanza Spalding concert at Cain Park. Not only did she keep her audience waiting too long but the genre of music that she performed (loud rock and interpretive dance) was so far from what she is known for that she shocked her audience. We came expecting an extremely talented jazz bassist and jazz vocalist and got nothing of the sort. Esperanza must understand her audience's expectation or include a clear disclaimer in her advertising and marketing for that concert. Quite frankly, it was a waste of our time and money!

Esperanza Spalding's performance was very special. She gave these wonderfully poetic transitions from song to song. Her voice and musical play were literally perfect. The band was tight. The Cobb Energy Center was the best venue. I have seen many concerts, but this one is right up there with when Return to Forever played the Cobb Energy Center a few years back. This Beautiful, Amazing, and Talented, Woman, and her band came out and rocked the house in Dallas Texas, on May 1, 2012 at The House of Blues, I thoroughly enjoyed this show, Esperanza is so sweet and even more endearing in person, than on youtube videos and TV shows, she is Remarkable, Incrediable, and Delightful, to hear and see live, her band members are just as Amazing as she is, one female saxophone player literally took the roof off with a no hold bars sax solo, she exploded!, Also Leonardo Ginovacy, her piano player showed off superior prowess and exceptional piano skills, his composer was excellent, this was a once in a life time event, don't miss the next one, if it comes around again, If you're in town or near the Dallas area. Hats off to Ticketmaster for putting on such a professional and mature outting, Superior quality indeed. Thanks for your time,pirrelli8

As a young, female bass player my self, I have been looking up to esperanza for many years. She gives me great inspiration to keep playing bass, even when times get tough and I can't find a group or when practicing sucks . That said, I've been waiting to see her in concert forever. With getting a job last year and using the money I got for my 19thparty birthday, I bought two tickets. It was the best $108 that I have ever spent and would do it again in a heart beat. In fact I would pay double to get to meet her for five minutes. It was fantastic and the small venue let me meet many other college musicians which is always cool. And I met some rather interesting people that listened to me play via YouTube and encouraged me to keep playing because I I have talent. I was thinking about taking a year away from jazz but now that I've seen her live I will never give up.

What an inspiring, stimulating and enlightening performance! She remained poised throughout the performance despite disrespectful actions and statements by members of the audience. Her talent, skill and presence command attention and respect. She is funny and playful in her presentation, yet serious and purposeful! ...Definitely an old soul with a fresh spirit.

Esperanza Spalding and her fellow musicians and vocalists performed in a way that gave old time jazz fans the chills with echoes of Eartha Kittt's style and the true sound of improv ensemble playing. Spalding and her group thrilled old and new jazz fans by subtle exhibition of deep knowledge of jazz roots, individual musicianship, and joy in playing together. The one drawback was the venue - fine for a big production such as an orchestra or opera, but it lacked the intimacy and sound quality that a smaller, more intimate venue would've allowed, as well as more immediate interaction with the audience. Even so, the fans were enthralled. And I, for one, was amazed to have the opportunity to have Spalding In Binghamton, NY.

Esperanza is witty as well as being one of the bast bass players - vocalists ever. She had a great group and they were so tight it was amazing. She chatted a little and explained the process behind the songs, she seems like a nice person as well as a great musician. I always enjoy her performances. She's young and has many more years of music making fortunately so I hope see her many more times. The Broome County Forum is a good place to see her as the acoustics are good and it has convenient parking too. I was sorry to see that the show was only 1/2 full it should have been sold out. Don't miss an opportunity to see her she's that good.

Miss Esperanza Emily is refining herself in a masterful manner. This is more a super refined rock opera than a jazz show as she previously played. But her mastery on the electric bass, the mere range of her voice, the musicians accompanying her, the décors, the costumes are simply beautiful.

She should go back to playing her classical, jazzy music. This Alter Ego music did not go over well with the crowd. A lot of the crowd left before the show was over. I'm so glad I received complementary tickets...if I had paid for this show, I would have been extremely upset. Bottom-line, the show was very disappointing!!!

I so anticipated the concert on April 22nd in Atlanta. I have never felt so ripped off in my life. After the third song, seats started emptying. I guess I should've suspected something was amiss when I started seeing grunge type teens arriving. A friend told me I should've researched her latest tours, as she was only performing her latest CD. I dropped the ball on this one. Esperanza, girl...bring back the upright bass and pearls, please!

I was very disappointed in the one hour incoherent mashup of similar sounding monotone songs performed by Esperanza's alter ego Emily, who seemed like an adult female version of Max from Where the Wild Things Are. The odd "performance" was accented by a random puppet show (in which the puppets barely moved) and soul train semicircle dance break. It was like Esperanza (Emily) and her crew were trying a bit too hard to be "deep" but weren't trying at all at being entertaining. I think she may have big dreams of being "cutting edge" and creatively poignant but unfortunately her execution was poor. It seemed like something she threw together that day. I had the same feeling I get at overambitious middle school musical performances--I want them to be so much better but they never are. As I sit in the audience part of me wants to leave but I suffer through it just to see my kid perform. Obviously, I didn't have a kid in the race at Esperanza's show but I was able to make it to the finale as the show ended just a mere hour after it began. Don't get me wrong, Esperanza is clearly a talented musician, I'm just not sure she is much of a performance artist/director.

This was not what we expected. We really should have done our research before hand, but it is not the Esperanza that does straight up jazz. It was some sort of morphed version of rock concert, performance art, and autobiography?!?! I wasn't getting it, and then after an hour my friend who is a jazz expert said, "I can't take it anymore. Let's go." So we only saw an hour. Just know what to expect before spending money on this.

Esperanza has put together a phenomenal show. Hiring singers that could also play instruments and act was a brilliant idea. The skits in between the songs really drove home the message in the music and enhanced the sonic energy in a way I've never seen before. I was completely transfixed and in awe of the flawless execution I was honored to witness. It was incredibly apparent that each person on stage had just let go and was in the moment. I can't say enough that this is a set you don't want to miss.

I got to center stage a hour before the show started and there was a long line waiting to be let in to see Esperanza mostly first timers, I first seen Esperanza on youtube and wow I quickly brought a ticket to see her in Atlanta, She has a 3 piece band with 3 background singers and they sound like a much larger band She' can sing anything, I know she loves Jazz but she could make more money and be better known if she makes 1 or 2 pop records, she has the voice and looks. she came out on stage and talked about Prince, everybody wanted her to sing a Prince song but she made up a song that she thought Prince would sing. but all and all she's a great talent.

She gave a bad show at center stage. She never talked to the crowd, no interaction at all. Didn't play ANY of her old jazz hits that got her here. And only played some detached weird music/theatrical mess that no one understood. People began walking out midway.

I had heard of Esperanza Spalding back when she won the AOTY Grammy in 2009 (I think). Anyway, my new girlfriend had recently caught wind of her via a friends' IPOD and turned me on to some of the new material from "Radio Music Society"...Black Gold and King to be specific. I liked what I heard. About a week later I noticed that she would be in the DC area very soon. I decided I would surprise my lady with tickets to the show. We were not disappointed. Miss Spalding is a true talent who should be revered on a larger scale. The way she uses her voice was truly magical. Her back band (9 or 10 I believe) were equally as talented. An excellent show overall. I can't wait to see her again!!!!

What I really appreciated about Esperanza Spalding -- beyond her perfectly-crafted vocals and seamless moves from bass guitar to stand up bass and back again -- was the carefully construction of the entire performance. She had a story to tell, and she lovingly took the audience by the hand to take us through that narrative. Jazz may be about improvisation, but it was clear that Esperanza had choreographed every step of our journey. I can't say enough about the amazing performances delivered by the musicians joining her on stage -- each a star in his/her own right. The performances were so tight, it was as if they presented with one voice. Brava.

Esperanza Spalding is the TRUTH! I can see why she beat out some of the more popular artists for her grammy. She can sing and play multiple instruments. She is a true performer! Her back up singers and the band were AMAZING!

A very special evening, an artist with near limitless talent and an angelic voice. The stage was set up with the "Horn" section seated behind a what resembled an old transistor radio. Even before Esperanza took the stage, the show begins with some static noise, and the band symbolically running through various genre's of music, simulating dialing thru the old radio dial. Your hooked, hold on and enjoy the show...

I had seen Esperanza Spalding in 2008 and was blown away. But, now she is even better. Her stage presence and rapport with the audience have probably improved more than her musicality. It amazes me that someone so young is so good. I was a bit disappointed that Spalding and Carrington did not perform together; I would have enjoyed them doing pieces from The Mosaic Project. I was glad to see that Atlanta's own Algebra was able to join the set. Seeing Spelman alum Tia Fuller (with both Carrington and Spalding) was an additional blessing. This was one of the best shows that I have ever seen.
