Kimbra

KIMBRA IN CONCERT:Aussie songstress Kimbra first rose to fame thanks to her collaboration on Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know", but lately it's her solo act that's earning attention. Her perfect mix of soulful pop, jazz, and dance music gets concertgoers tearing up the floor all night. Known for her eccentric stagewear, powerful vocal range, and expert use of looping effects, Kimbra never fails to wow with her infectious energy and phenomenal performances of originals such as "Settle Down" and "Plain Gold Ring".BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Kimbra got her start in music at the age of 12 when she learned to play guitar and sang in her school choir.

Kimbra, put on one of the best shows I have seen n years. Her band was very good. I love the CD, but hearing her live made me wish I could remaster the CD to pick up some the frequencies lost on the CD. The live performance was so much better than the recording. Kimbra's passion and enthusiasm through the entire show is infectious . The joy she emits can't help but make you smile. She is an amazing performer.

The Stepkids opening the show was fantastic. Their performance alone was worth the price of the ticket! And then... Little Miss Kimbra came on and worked the hell out of the stage and her costume. I mean wow! I thought I loved her before, but seeing her live completely solidified it. Also I have to point out Kimbras guitarist, idk his name but he's the Latino guy that was killing it! I highly recommend this performance. (obviously)

I caught the opening act, The Stepkids and I thought they were a great warmup to Kimbra's set, so if you usually forgo the opening act (as I usually do) change it up just this once, they have a great jam band set up and the lightshow they use is super trippy with their funk/rock feel from the 60s/70s. That being said, Kimbra was amazing, her band was just as great as she was, they are a talented group altogether and gel very well together. The live versions of all her songs were even faster paced and more energetic than those recorded on the album, and made for a fun night and a lot of dancing, she is spectacular, and looped live for several numbers (Settle Down, Something in the Way You Are, Cameo Lover, Plain Gold Ring) and that was by far the highlight of my night, she is a master of her voice and the stage, and her grin and laugh is infectious. All in all I would definitely see her again if offered, the live experience offered her music a new and interesting dimension to her already layered musical talent. I would also recommend her to anyone that likes a fun, danceable and fast paced concert experience, Kimbra is on the rise and I am so excited to see her live again and hear new material.

She is extremely talented and very unique, and I think she is at the top in music right now. The show overall was so fun and one of the most memorable shows ever! She did so great. This was the first time I left a show early out of disappointment. Kimbra came out on stage in a dress that looked like a preschool arts and craft project. It had shoulder pads made of a wig cut into two, a big skirt with green metallic leaves on them, and her hair was teased to make a fluffy helmet. I couldn't even look at her and had to focus on the beautiful tapestry behind her. The first two songs you couldn't hear her vocals because the band was too loud. Maybe I had too high of expectations, but she met them when performing Plain Gold Ring. But then it was back to jumping around the stage, making strange faces, and wasting her beautiful voice for a quirky gimmick. I left a few songs later. I wanted to hear my favorite song settle down, but I was afraid of what I would hear or see.

Saw her open for Foster the People. Amazing singer, such a big voice for a little person. But after the show she refused to stop and talk to fans, sign autographs or take pictures. While Foster gladly did all the above. She wouldnt even acknowledge people. Just kept her head down and walked to her bus. I still like her music, just see her in a different light...

First off Webster Hall is a great venue to see a show. I had been intrigued by what I heard from Kimbra but can hardly call myself a fan. My girl is a Kiwi so I pay extra attention to acts coming out of New Zealand. Besides the curiosity factor and the price point the main draw for me was The Step Kids. These guys are amazing. They went to school locally and I've seen them prior to being signed. They're local heroes. All in all great performances from both bands. The Step Kids are known for their projection light show (they've been doing long before being signed), musicianship, and vocal harmonies. These guys make your head bounce with a heavily funk and soul influenced sound. Kimbra assembled a very capable band and put on a tight, exhilarating performance. Being a drummer myself I tend to be critical of other drummers. The one from her band was amazing. Kimbra herself is no slouch. Very energetic and fun to watch as she is to hear. Her excitement to be playing her first headlining show in NYC (sold out to boot) was palpable. Smiles and head bobbing abound. Go out and see this package while you can still see them in small venues. Well worth it!

Kimbra was in excellent voice, and her band is tight and hugely talented. She plays to the entire crowd and is a fabulous presence of positive energy. Great playing all around, song selection a nice blend, including 'Withdrawal' (not on US album). She is a true talent to be reckoned with, hard working and obviously passionate about what she does. It's so refreshing to see a performer who doesn't pander. My only complaint? That the show wasn't 4 hours longer. Hee. Too bad the opening act was nothing more than snotty hipster Fairfield County white boy funk. Good players, but not doing anything I haven't seen before. Their songs lacked hooks and appeared to be nothing more than "guitar solo delivery systems". It didn't help that they walked through the crowd acting pretentious and twee as they passed out stickers.

I absolutely love Kimbra. She shows so much energy and it's easy to tell that she really feels her music. The show was nothing less than awesome and I must say that The Stepkids were definitely amazing. I was blown away by the whole show, even though the crowd at times was louder than her. Since the crowd was louder than Kimbra at certain points, I totally didn't get the satisfaction I wanted from hearing her sing "Something In the Way You Are", but her performance was excellent. As I've said in the title of my post, Kimbra is dominating and I mean it.

Kimbra was absolutely amazing!! She was high-energy and fun, and I'm so glad I went to see her!! The music was a bit heavy on the speakers, making it a little hard to hear her voice sometimes, but it was still great. My only regret is that Kimbra didn't mellow out and do any a cappella singing. She's got such a beautiful and unique voice and I've seen videos where she is unaccompanied by anything but her own voice and still sounded great, so I was hoping to see that at the show as well. Even without that, it was definitely a show worth seeing. Her band was great too, and really seemed to enjoy being out there performing.

Kimbra wore two costumes. A MuMu with Art Deco style print and a Chrome piece bodice and tutu. Her beautiful skin made the revealing Chrome dress captivating. He voice was overshadowed early in the set by the Base & Drums. I think the bass notes were from a keyboard, since I didn't see anyone playing a bass guitar at the time. The fixed that by the third song an I was loving it. Kimbra has terrific stage presence and is great with the crowd. Many songs were sung by the crowd as well and I think she enjoyed that. I sang along to Settle Down and Two Way Street.

First off I have to say I love, love, love and adore her. I have finally admitted that I have a crush on Kimbra. I'm sure I must be one of thousands but oh well in my head its only me and no one else can adore her like I do. So needless to say it was with great anticipation that I was eagerly awaiting this show. I think live she is amazing and I love her energy and emotion throughout. She is so damn musical with her voice words cannot describe. Truly she uses her voice like an instrument and I wish we could have heard more. As others mentioned there were issues with the sound mix - I thought it was horrible in the middle of the club which should have been the sweet spot. I wish I brought my plugs with me however I know its not her fault. Also think an accapella song or two would have been amazing. She did interact with the audience quite a bit but sometimes felt like they were rushing the set. My hunch is they have to be off stage by a predetermined HOB time. As usual for HOB, the club was packed. It felt oversold to me as it was nearly impossible to move freely from anywhere in the club. And then add to this a new safety isle added on the dance floor that effectively removed about 20% of the standing area and massive crowding ensued which wasnt a good mix for enjoyment of the show. Needless to say that HOB is my least favorite venue in San Diego. My friends always joke that HOB is the McDonalds of nightclubs so their job is to get you in and get your money and get you out as quickly as possible. No comment on the opening act Step Kids - sorry I was stuck in traffic trying to find a decent parking space. I stayed after for a minute to check out the merchandise booth. I was sad to see there were no Kimbra singles or any vinyl being offered. Step Kids did stay and they were talking to and signing for everyone. I wish Kimbra would consider doing that as well. Overall I really loved seeing her live however would have much preferred a different venue with better sound. I would give her 4 stars for her performance and the club 2 stars being generous so I am scoring 3 stars for this show. For the next tour I will probably travel to another city rather than attend another HOB show.

Kimbra is a great singer. The band and sound people behind her were terrible last Saturday night. They drowned out her voice, filled the music with stupid electronic noises and had the drum kit miked as if it were in a stadium. We left after 6 songs as it didn't get better. Lots of others around us left also. Very disappointing and sad to see such a great artist being ruined. Luckily the opening act Micky Ecko was superb backed by outstanding musicians who had the sound just right. What a fabulous singer he is and the drummer backing him had fabulous dynamics. The contrast between his superb show and the awful one by Kimbra only showed how bad her people were.

An amazing artist who walks her own path, and delivers a show filled with great songs, energetic, spirited performances and a supremely talented, tight band. Kimbra was fabulous on her last tour in the US, but this show surpasses it--every song was delivered with grit and energy and spectacular musicianship. That she is not a household name is a crime, in my opinion. Then again, she is not a I-V-vi-IV pop princess--her songs are far more sophisticated, challenging and exciting than the standard fare, and her live performances deliver a fun, powerful knock-out punch. Highly--HIGHLY recommended!

What happens when you blend together human percussion, a glorious use of vocabulary, original mesmerizing beats, and a vessel all in which to perform it all? Well, ladies and gentlemen you are presented with Kimbra. The audience erupted when she ran down the stairs onto the Royale stage\u2014an entrance I will not soon forget. This girl isn't just a powerhouse singer; her music is meticulously thought out, beautifully phrased, incredibly relatable, to put it simply\u2014 it s art. They don t make them like this anymore. Only once in a blue moon do you have an artist give as much as Kimbra does on stage. Thank the stars she came to the U.S. as a headliner. The show was clean, music was well balanced, the band was playing like their life depended on it, and of course miss Kimbra gave a performance nothing short of a superstar. Brava, Miss Kimbra! She was adorable as always, and her costume brought another whole element to her performance, it was so flashy! Kimbra was fantastic...from the energy she delivered in "Two Way Street" to the phenomenal collaboration with The Stepkids during her encore performance of "Call Me"...I was more than pleased. I traveled all the way from Houston, TX to see her in Toronto and brought three others with me who I've recently turned into Kimbra-heads... It was most memorable!

Great show overall. The Step Brothers rocked as the opening act. Kimbra was unforgettable! I would see her again.
