Present Laughter (NY)

Legendary Academy Award® and Tony Award® winner Kevin Kline makes his eagerly awaited return to Broadway in Noël Coward’s outrageously irresistible backstage comedy PRESENT LAUGHTER.With a spectacular cast headed by three-time Tony® and Emmy® Award nominee Kate Burton (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), Tony Award® nominee Kristine Nielsen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), and Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back) in her Broadway debut, with direction by Tony Award® nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God), PRESENT LAUGHTER follows a self-obsessed actor in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Juggling his considerable talent, ego and libido, the theater’s favorite leading man suddenly finds himself caught between fawning ingenues, crazed playwrights, secret trysts and unexpected twists.

In my opinion you will never go wrong with Kevin kline therefore you expect a good show and that is exactly what he gave us. It was funny and well acted, all the characters have their own charm and the production in general is very well put together. I had an amazing time at the theater and time flew without even notice it....

This marvelous production, while maintaining the wit of Coward's best work, features an ensemble of extraordinary talent, led by the incomparable Kevin Kline. The actors work so well together one can only believe that they been living this story forever. Kevin Kline is perfect in this role; he is smooth, well-timed and hilarious. I could see this production again. Loved it.

The play was nothing short of hysterical with quite a bit of sophistication as would be expected of a Noel Coward opus. Kevin Klein as Garry Essedine, showed perfect comic timing and the supporting cast handled the job of adoring Garry perfectly.

Had tickets to see Kevin Kline in Present Laughter. Had dinner at Guy Fieri's American Kitchen and Bar. Both were a grand experience. We will always remember our night on Broadway. The food. The play. The ambiance. The total experience. Kevin Kline made us chuckle and laugh from beginning to end. He can still do great physical comedy. We're from Iowa and hope to do this again.

The role calls for a ham and boy, does Kevin Kline deliver. Yes, you can quibble that the cast is uneven and especially the younger members of cast seem to feel they need to overact to keep up with Kline. But let that go and enjoy watching Kline at his mature best. Yes, he is hamming it up but his physical comedy and his timing is fabulous. The actors portraying his not-quite-ex and his long suffering business manager, both classy older women, are smashing. The dialogue is sheer bliss- Noel Coward's wit and barbed humor is unmatched. Loved it and left smiling from ear to ear. Well worth seeing.

The impeccable timing, droll delivery and consummate professionalism of the entire cast raises Present Laughter above its otherwise funny Noel Coward material. Kevin Kline, Kate Burton and company shamelessly milk the script for every laugh, guffaw and chuckle. The final scene is an uproarious slapstick pastiche that elevates the entire performance ..

I have been going to Broadway for 30 years. This is the first time I have walked out of a show. The night cost me over $500.00 with theater tickets, dinner and parking; but the misery of sitting and watching this boring, hapless, uninteresting endless show was worth the loss. I cant explain how the fake, high noted English accents came across to the crowd. The material was a total bore as was the acting. Tony award or not, I came to see Kevin Kline for his comedic skills, but they were absent. When a heavy handshake among three actors was supposed to be funny - as one would do in third grade - I knew the night was over. I looked at my watch within 20 minutes to see how I could escape, and couldn't bear it anymore and departed with my wife. I met another couple in the lobby doing the same. THE MOST BORING SHOW IN ALL THEATER.

Kevin Kline was outstanding! He and Kristine Nielsen brought tears of laughter to me and to the audience. Their portrayals were spot on. Kate Burton was terrific, and the supporting cast lent its ample talents to Mr. Coward's work. This developed into an extremely entertaining evening. Mr. Kline, however, was the clear star of the show, and his emotive antics drove the humor deep and was quite rewarding for the patrons of this event. It is a limited engagement, running through early July. I recommend this show to all who can make it before it goes away.

Tony-winning Kevin Kline was, as expected, excellent. Not too hammy but charming and in full control of the Noel Coward charisma and exactitude. The actress playing suave and devious Joanna was excellent. Kate Burton could have had a bit more sparkle. It was difficult to understand the first young thing who fell for Gary Essendine -- she spoke very fast. It was the final performance and the audience leapt to its feet-- would have expected a bit of an extended curtain call, but that was not to be. The actors may have been ready for their upcoming break.

When I saw that Kevin Kline was up for a Tony award, my first thought was that he would be tough to beat. Of course, I knew that he won the award before I saw the show. But, when I saw the show, I had to laugh. There was just no way that anyone else could possibly have beaten him for the Best Actor Tony Award. This show is a perfect vehicle for Kevin Kline. His dry wit was perfect for the role he played. Kevin Kline has always been a master of facial expressions, but in this show he also demonstrated a mastering if hand gestures. Kevin Kline is an American acting treasure. This was my first experience with a Noel Coward play. It was wonderful. I truly hope that Broadway brings us more of his plays in the near future.

There were plenty of people laughing at this show. My wife and I were not one of them. Good humor is good humor is good humor and good writing is good writing. This play, written in 1939 by the great Noel Coward, still holds up as laugh-out-loud farce with a few light touches of poignant musing on growing old; very light, I should say, for there are no moments for tears, but a few times when one might muse on the ravages of time. Kevin Kline is acrobatic and charismatic as always, Kate Burton is solid, of course, and Coby Smoulders is not just good, she's great and absolutely delicious. She holds her own against Kline, no small feat, especially considering this is her Broadway debut. I already liked her from the TV show and the small roles in action films but now I am basically in love.

The St. James Theater was the perfect (cozy) setting for this Noel Coward (autobiographical) play. Kevin Kline gives an amazing performance with his facial expressions, hand gestures and physical comedy. He has the balance and stamina of a dancer. After 100 shows, the back and forth choreography between actors is timed perfectly and a credit to the seasoned actors Kate Burton and Kristine Nielson working with Mr. Kline. (and Colbie Smulders in her Broadway debut) I was lucky enough to sit up front and afterwards was treated to an interview of the director and actors by the WSJ critic Terry Teachout along with other WSJPLUS members. It was fascinating to hear from them how specific scenes, lines and expressions came to fruition as the actors developed their roles. Tired of musicals and elaborate productions? Go see this play and appreciate real acting without the hype and special effects drowning them out.

I went to Present Laughter mainly to see Kevin Kline, and I wasn't disappointed. He was great, deserving of all of his accolades for this role. Most of the rest of the cast was also very good, too...and Cobie Smulders was, to me, a wonderful surprise. Do be forewarned that this is a 70 year-old play, and it really feels dated at times. But, it is also very funny, especially done by this company. Seeing Present Laughter is a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

From the website and reviews, you would have thought that this a laugh-a-minute and just totally engaging and full of laughter. We noticed several people falling asleep on both sides of us. That should give you some idea Totally waste of our money and we left halfway thru the show But let me say that Kevin Cline and cast were AMAZING per their performances but JUST NOT FUNNY

From the moment the play began, we sat entranced. Kevin Kline is the sort of actor you see once a year or two or if you ever get to see someone so very skilled. His interactions with every character are hilarious. The entire cast works beautifully together. The play is a light-hearted comedy, but the impact of the play is that you have witnesses old fashioned Broadway excellence. We adored it! Was this review helpful to you? Admitting he would let anyone who forgot their latchkey stay in the spare room. Perfect innuendo.  @  Posted 05/22/2017 by Elsita This Fan's Reviews Location: Manhattan Kevin Kline was born to play this part. He and the rest of the cast hit every note and every gesture was just right.

Kevin Kline is the reason to go to this show - he is in high zany form, with lots of energy. While I would highly recommend the performance, it is primarily because of Kevin Kline and the ensemble cast that works well together. But, the play is light, and not one of Noel Coward's best. The women actors are all first rate, and well cast for their roles, particularly the women playing Liz (his wife), Monica (his secretary) and Joanna (his lover). With the exception of the butler, the other men in the play had less stage time, and hence their performances, while all were very good, were less memorable.
