Fantastic show. It was fresh and relevant and high energy. Very much a good time. Heard many people of all ages as they came out saying how much they liked it too. This is real life and speaks to us.

This is the second time I've seen the show, although the last time was with the original Broadway cast, and it is the best show I've ever been to. The songs are even better than the original Green Day versions, and the energy was phenomenal. The dancing is a lot different from normal musicals, but it fits well with the music. It was especially interesting how one of the main characters, the one stuck back in Jingletown, was on the stage for the entire performance. On the back wall are probably 50 televisions, constantly flashing with different images, helping to set the mood or help see small things. Although some people complain about a lack of plot, it is there. It just isn't the only important thing, and the plot points are sometimes a little rushed to fit in between songs. Overall, it was wonderful. I don't know which cast was better, because I honestly don't think they could have made the show any better. Unless you have epilepsy or can't stand flashing lights for some reason. Then stay far, far away.

I've been waiting for this show to come to my state since it was still on Broadway. I'm always a little scared to see a touring cast though when the original cast is who I fell in love with. The American Idiot cast did not disappoint! The show was incredible, the cast was so talented, and I left wishing I could see it all over again.

Awesome! What an amazing show.  I went expecting a rock concert and while the music was great, I was also surprised about how moved I was by the storyline, especially the slower, more poignant songs.

The show was amazing. It was different from most musicals. The story was told completely by song. There was very little dialogue, but that's what made it interesting.

absoultly the best. You should enjoy Green Day, but the performances and staging is great. No intermission so non stop music. Good idea to review Green Days song before going.

American Idiot was a great show! The energy of the cast was just amazing. The show had a quick pace and was over before you knew it! The cast had outstanding voices and went fully into their characters. The females certainly held their own and shined even though this is a male dominated cast. The lead was incredible and completely brought you into his world. Well done! This certainly isn't a show for kids or young teens. Not real sure that the older, traditional Broadway crowd in the audience enjoyed it too much. If you liked Rent or Spring Awakening, this is probably perfect for you. Of course if you are a Green Day fan, you will love it. Keep in mind that Green Day uses profane laguage in their songs and there are obscene gestures as well as other things that some might find offensive. I just say this for those that have no idea who Green Day is and then are shocked at the show. The cast received a well deserved standing ovation and I would see this show again. Doing the extra song after the curtain call was an added bonus!

I am a big fan of the original CD "American Idiot" and wondered whether the musical would lose the edge that makes the CD so great. But it did not. The musical was every bit as edgy and was very well executed. The cast was extremely talented and performed the songs with the perfect amount of emotion. They were strong singers and some of them were good guitar players. The choreography was well-executed and highlighted the songs well. I can see why the musical won a Tony for its staging. The stage set up fit the tone of the story well. I highly recommend this musical both for fans of musical theater and for those who typically are not.

I have seen many musicals and this ranks in my top 3. From start to finish it was exciting. The music and vocals were excellant. I had read reviews and was ready to be entertained but the actual show blew me away. It's high energy packed with lots of talent. If theres a young person in your life that you'd like to introduce Broadway to this is the show to go to! My 16 year old daughter has seen most of the Broadway shows of the last 6years and she loved this one the most. She asked if we could return for another performance. I wish this event had been promoted more in the Detroit area. You don't have to be a Green Day fan to fall in love with the story!

There is no emotion or substance to the "acting" in the show whatsoever, just nicely choreographed dancing and singing to the album. The band was too far back in the mix, so they made "pop" rock even softer. If you like Green Day, just go to their concert. If you want to see a Broadway show, there are much better choices.

My husband & I attended the Wednesday evening performance at the Detroit Opera House. We were blown away. Having two kids who played Green Day non-stop since the band formed in 1987, our family grew up with Green Day music. During spring 2010, our daughter saw "American Idiot" on Broadway in NYC & insisted we see it. Summer 2010, when she visited, our daughter left the CD "American Idiot" in our car. For the past year, it has been our "driving music" so we were thrilled when we heard the show was (finally) coming to Detroit. And, it didn't disappoint...in fact, we enjoyed it more than we could have imagined. We are even sorry we didn't purchase tickets for more than one performance!

A lover of musical theater and a fan of Green Day, I was terribly disappointed by this show. Lacking dialog, it was difficult to figure out the story line. The choreography, which consisted mostly of a lot of head-banging, was less-than-inspired. This cast was fine and The Pantages theater was okay (although the sound could be a bit better). Just wish it had been a better show.

Amazing! The Actors were on stage without a break for 90 minutes, but it was unfortunate that the sound system wasn't adjusted to their wonderful voices, often drowned out by the music. The energy and visual stimulation by various lighting techniques meant you wouldn't fall asleep during the performance. The ensemble was a unified group of talented people who gave 1,000% to their roles and the audience. I applaud them for the hard work.

I saw AI for the first time two years ago at the Ahmanson. It was brilliant then, but this time was even better! I noticed so many more details that I hadn't noticed the first time. This production is truly a unique work of art. It's essentially a hybrid of a punk rock concert and a play. The set is ingenious and exceptionally creative...it's my second favorite element of the musical, right after the jaw-dropping music performed by talented actors and a live rock band. AI isn't your typical play, but it is definitely my favorite production. It is deliciously unconventional and addictively intriguing.

We were really looking forward to the show, but felt like we were seeing the second string team on stage. Music was great, voices of the main characters were great, but the chorus members with the occasional solos were notably sub-par. Set, lights and visual affects were great. Choreography was odd and also wasn't helped by the second string cast. I love musicals, but this was just not up to snuff for something at the Pantages.

I would only recommend seeing this if you really love the music of Green Day. The story is very weak and has no depth. There is very little dialogue. It is "Mamma Mia-esque" in that the plot is clumsily fit around songs. The sets are flashing lights and flat screen TVs. The music was good but sound quality was that of a garage band. The cast has energy but I feel for their lumbar spines after dancing emo punk style for prolonged periods. The two female leads had good voices, the others would do well at an American Idol try out.

I guess I am spoiled seeing high end plays. I was a bit bored with the lack of change of scenery. I also made the mistake of not reading about the play prior to going so I was extremely lost by the lack of dialogue. I wish there was at least a narrator - or an announcement to read something prior to the play starting. Last gripe - they didn't sing Brain Stew. Come on people - best Green Day song ever and you didn't include it? Ouch. Now for the good stuff. Great actors and amazing singers. If you are a Green Day fan - they really dive head first into the music.

The short of it is, if you are a fan of the album, see it. American Idiot is one of my favorite albums of all time. To see it come to life like this - the way it was intended, was amazing. While all in all both me and my friend really really enjoyed it, here are some of my favorite parts: 1) St. Jimmy - the guy could sing and put some nice little twists in the vocals that BJA could never do (not because he isn't talented, he just doesn't have the range). 2) What you think is going to be "wake me up when september ends" 3) 21 guns and the other non-album songs 4) The story. 5) The encore. There were some negatives: 1) The dancing was super broadway we don't know how to do punk/rock/whatever. 2) The songs sung with multiple lead singers were the worst, such as "Jesus of Suburbia" which is not only my favorite song on the album but one of the best songs of all time in my book. Of course worst is still pretty good. , sans "We are the waiting". 3) As mentioned "we are the waiting." The guy singing it just wasn't hitting it.

One of the best musicals I have ever seen. The performances are passionate, the subject matter a true reflection of life and the star of the show is the heart pounding music of Green Day! A true masterpiece where the show doesn't insult the viewer with colorful costumes and coddle to senior citizens with Fairy Tale endings. Instead, the show gives the audience an insight on apathy, angst and loss through wonderful choreographed numbers coupled by hard, foot stomping music. Leave the kids at home and rage like you did when you were young! Please Note: There is NO intermission.

I was blown away! The show was engaging from start to finish, and the actors, set, and lighting were all outstanding. It was very interesting to see the songs re-purposed for the stage, but without losing the young, rebellious vibe that Green Day is so well know for. The live band on stage was a great touch. Overall, this production is highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a contemporary, high-energy show (especially if you're like me and grew up with the soundtrack).

If you're a die hard Green Day fan then you would love this musical because it's basically a cover of all their songs. If you're not & you are hoping to enjoy a musical this will be an excruciatingly painful and long torture. Why it received 1 star: - no story line or real developed plot - granted this is a musical, but the little monologue the main actor had was annoying with his 3 word sentences in diary/letter form read out loud - performers & sound system failed to sing and speak clearly, i could not figure a word they were saying, everything sounded muffled and dulled - dancing/choreography, i suppose may be meant to be a little loose and grungy, but to me it looked unpracticed, lazy and uncoordinated - no intermission, by the midway point the whole audience and i were fidgeting in our seats cause our butts were numb from sitting too long i'm so disappointed in this musical. i might have developed a hate towards green day now cause of it.

I now have seen American idiot nine times so my review would be different than the first time. Have seen it in NY, San Francisco, San Jose and LA. This cast is a bit weaker than the others I have seen but not significantly. Luckily, I was able to see the original cast on Broadway where Billie Jo played St Jimmy! Jared's (Johnny) voice was a bit weaker than I would have liked. Also, they didn't do the flying seen for Tunny and Extraordinary Girl. Not sure if that was a cast issue or theater issue. Carson (St Jimmy) and Andrew (key songs Too Much Too Soon and American Idiot) were great, especially all of Andrew's hand gestures. I saw it three times at Pantages, twice from the right orchestra and once from the left. The sound seemed better on the left-not sure if that is a theater issue or not. One really minor complaint-at the very beginning of the show when it starts "This Is American Idiot" the lead guitar player started in the middle of the phrase. I realize this is really picky but for me that line is important, followed by his guitar riff and I would have preferred if he waited one second longer. All in all, very entertaining and still my favorite musical of all time. I like the Broadway CD way better than the Green Day one due to the variety of voices for the different parts.

If you are thinking about going, please let me help you make up your mind - this is the best rock opera ever and will go down in history as such. I saw the show in NYC last year and it took me months to come down from the high - it was that great! Billie Joe was in it and I got to see him in person (I'll post a pic) but I'm going again this weekend (and he will not be in it) and I still can't wait. Unless you're a big Green Day fan this isn't the play for you. Story line was incredibly difficult to follow and you're not really sure if it's based on the bands real life or just kind of made up for the sake of the story. Songs were pretty good, but many time there were too many male voices and they failed to harmonize. The choreography left a lot to be desired as they seemed like they were trying to choreograph a punk show crowd with 8-10 people.

As a musical American Idiot was pretty standard. They took pseudo-punk songs, applied it to an unsophisticated story, and put typical musical voices behind it. I expected a lot more from Billy Joe Armstrong and was disappointed in the lack of edge from every other musical. With the soundtrack I felt that they could have really taken this someplace different, and made it amazing, unfortunately they did not. Now keep in mind that this could be VERY different on Broadway, so simply stated I was disappointed with the director of the travelling company. The audience was incredibly disrespectful, and it was abundantly clear they have never been to this type of performance. I have never seen so many people get up to use the restroom in the middle of a performance, and I have never seen so many people attempting to take pictures during a performance. There were A LOT of drunk people who were yelling... NOT singing... with the performance. I understand that because of the artist behind the performance these are not your typical musical attendees, but, it felt like the staff at the Pantages could have done a MUCH better job controlling the audience and their disrespectful behavior. Overall, I guess what I am saying is make sure you know what you are getting into, and accordingly adjust your expectations.

Acoustics were a bit distorted in the beginning and wasn't sure if it was from the location or the sound equipment was a bit loud. I thought the play got better toward the middle to end. Maybe because the songs were more familiar and more mellower. I really liked the solos and how they put together the songs to the time period/events that were going on. If you are a Green Day fan, then you must see this play. It's like a concert and a musical put together as one.

I have to admit, we bought tickets for this show for my teenage son who is a big fan of Green Day. I love musical theater, so why not marry the two? I'd read enough reviews and heard enough snippets from the show on YouTube to know I'd probably enjoy it. I was blown away by the strength of the cast and the staging. The play was very well acted, all of the singing was spot on, and the onstage band rocked. They really brought the Green Day music to life in a way that is easily missed on the radio. The characters--including the supporting characters--were well developed. The music combined with the singing and acting told a comprehensive and engaging story about a generation who have been asked to navigate and literally fight their way through the post-cold war society that we've created for them. Each character arc was engaging and left me wanting to see the play again.

the music was amazing! the set and effects brilliant! The story was weak but it didn't matter because everything else was superior.

It took a couple minutes to adjust to the unorthadox nature of the musical. Most of the aspects of it that are very different from other musicals are completely intentional and necissary to the theme. Although I did find some of the choreography to be lacking, I really embraced the message of the messed up, broken youth that's been manifested because of societal, media corruption. It shows a metamorphosis from a rebellious and lost group of teens, to a bunch of young adults that realize the reality of the world they have to live in. I've always been a fan of Green Day, and I think they did a great job in capturing some of the darker sides of reality...drug addiction, lost love, and the chaos harbored in trying to find a way to get through this world. I appreciated that there was very little dialogue and was more focussed on artistically expressing the message through the music. I certainly reccommend this musical. :)

Just not what I expected. I had heard a lot of great things about this musical. It did not live up to the hype. We actually left early. Maybe it was just the cast but the play seemed to drag on and on. Also the male cast members did not nail the songs. The lyrics were lost on these singers.

This show is incredible. Absolutely incredible. It translates Green Days album into a poignant story about the world we live in and the youth growing up in it. The entire production from dancing, to singing, to the set, and the story are so amazing. P.S. don't run out after the curtain drops. That would be a mistake.

I am a great fan of Greenday, so I did not know if the musical would be able to do it justice, but this was one awesome show!!! I would go again and again. I also recommend watching the American Idiot --the making of the musical documentary on netflix. It really shows us how all of this came together and the inportance that the band took in making sure their art came across. Awesome Awesome Awesome!!!!

My son is a HUGE Green Day fan so I decided to go along with him to see the show. Wow, wow, wow! are the first words that come to my mind. The opening number was powerful and impressive and the set, a modern industrial kaleidoscope of TVs and scaffolding with just a hint of an old brownstone facade that had seen better days, was impressive as well. The cast was outstanding - not a weak link in the bunch. The energy they exuded through their characters and choreography was electric. They surely did not "dial in" their performance; they were present, in the moment, and flat out outstanding! The Pantages itself is a wonderful venue and I must give full props to the crew and especially the sound tech. The vocals were blended wonderfully and the sound was full and powerful.

Unfortunately, the potential for a powerful insight into a deep dark side of self absorption, addiction, and utter narcissism falls beyond short. I have seen better High School choreography. Other than two performers worthy efforts (lead female and alter ego Jimmy) the rest of the cast seemed to be out of sync amateurs stuck somewhere between a cheesy halloween frat party and a karaoke ball. Sad to say it will take months for me to loose these images and enjoy my American Idiot CD again....where are you Billy Joe???

Appreciate what this musical was trying to do but it was very disjointed too much going on. Not every popular Album/CD can be transformed into a musical. Tried to cover too much though appreciated the effort to express the alienation and struggles of the current generation.

I would definitely recommend this production to anyone who is able to see it while its still here in town. It is a unique show with amazing music. If you are a big Green Day fan this is the show for you. If not you should not go it is not for everyone because there is not much dialogue so being a fan i loved it for the music. From a theatrical aspect there is many unique set changes and great choreography as well but if you are the type who needs a big story with lots of dialogue and plot involved this is not for you.

The music was fun and lively, but the cast overall was pretty lousy. A theatre-goer said it might possibly be because they're non-union. It seemed a bit unprofessional in terms of quality, and the choreography was boring.

This was my fifth time seeing American Idiot! It was really well done as always! This cast did splendidly! I found it very interesting to see that they modified the scene where Tunny's in the hospital. In the other productions I've seen (on B'way, in San Francisco, and in LA at the Ahmanson) they've always done that scene with the characters on wires. I was curious why they didn't, but it was still cool regardless. The orchestra was also fabulous.
