John Lydon (nee Johnny Rotten a long time ago) and his tight-knit band tore up Culture Room November 5th ! Great song choices and Johnny was spot on for the whole show, giving a 110% like he always does. There is a great story here, from unwanted poor Irish sick kid, to transplanted Londoner to the most hated and feared man in the UK, if not the world, as the lead singer of the Sex Pistols. After the heroin overdose death of his friend Sid Viscious (thanks a lot Nancy), John removed himself from the punk scene and reinvented himself as the front man of Public Image Limited. Now, he's an American, quite successful and as brilliant, snarky and truthful as ever. Indeed, he is a true 'Warrior'. PIL played their new song, 'Betty Page' and while most poseurs and fratboys in the audience didn't get it, Betty really made her name posing for Bunny Yeager photos here in South Florida in the 60's. Made The Road Rise With You, John and PIL !

Saw these guys last night as I was waiting to see them since I have been follow their music in the 80, the repertory was great, the sound was good also and the venue very personal. Mr. Johnny (Rotten) still has the powerful voice that I always admired since he was with the Pistols in the 70's. The band sounded like a truck!!! Anger is an ENERGY!!!!!!

PiL was awesome, played for a generous amount of time and fullfilled every dream I ever had of seeing them in person . Johnny and the band were very enthusiastic and involved with the crowd. The only problem was I purchased tickets for my sixteen year old daughter and myself. When we arrived, they said we'd be only allowed upstairs (so no bouncing floor or close to the stage like we'd imagined). The tickets should have been cheaper for under 21. But we found a way around it anyway. Thanks.

Johnny Lydon was definately not rotten ... last night. The show was strong, deep, dark and bright all at once ... the creepy, terrorist foreshadowing U-S-L-S-1 called for all to listen to what Johhny had been saying all along with his arms out like an aeroplane, you wonder about his mans inner intelligence, and why the CIA hasn't used him as an informant. The softer side of Johnny, brought to light what everyone has wonder "Well, what are friends for" Forgiveness, will make it a better world ... he quiped, well, isn't that ... what friends are for great show.

18 years in the making and the return of PIL to the stage plays off as if they haven't missed a year since! Not only where the vocals of John Lydon stellar, but the rest of the band, returning guitarist Lu Edmonds, returning drummer Bruce Smith, and new bassist Scott Firth, rocked the crowd as if needing to rehearse is unnecessary. Opening up with the classic 80's hit from 1984's "This is what you want....this is what you get" LP, "This Is Not A Love Song" got the crowd into action, bouncing, cheering, singing and even dancing in the audience. From there, the band moved on down the yellow brick road of PIL's past, performing such songs as "Poptones", "Tie Me To The Length of That" "Disappointed", "Warrior", "Religion" and the famed anthem "Public Image". In the band's second encore (really the true encore, as the first was really just a "pee break" for John Lydon because his bladder couldn't retain any longer) PIL explode with hits "Sun", "Rise" and closing the set with the John Lydon/Leftfield collaboration "Open Up", turning the Nokia into a true dance club - techno lights included. :) For those of you who missed out on seeing PIL in their raw and best form in a small club atmosphere, I pity you. No really, it was a truing amazing show that boosted the band to a height of returning accomplishment. Hopefully those who missed out on the Nokia show got to experience the band at the Coachella Valley Music festival, or at least around the US on tour, as the return of PIL is a show not to be missed. They played a lot of older stuff, and were musically tight. Johnny still puts on a great show, even though he is moving up in years. It was great to see them again, as one of the first shows I ever went to, now 30 years later thay have not lost their zing. It is pretty much a unique experience.

It was an excellent show, Lydon was full of piss and energy, the band was extremely tight, and the selection of songs from their early catalog was fantastic, especially Albatross and other picks from Metal Box. The only down point was the drunk female fan who barreled her way in front of my girlfriend and me in the over-21 area of the Showbox and then proceeded to get belligerent when we told her she was being rude. Fortunately she left after a bit of back and forth. Odd that she would act like a Limp Bizkit fan at a PIL show but it takes all kinds I suppose. Given recent concert experiences I'm starting to think I have knack for finding the one truly unpleasant person at every show I go to. Anyhow, the show was fantastic and while this was a different band from the one I saw a couple of times in the late eighties they were just as good. They also expanded the songs and used alternate instrumentation that really breathed some extra life into the songs. Go see PiL!

Public Image Ltd did not dissapoint. In fact, they are back and better than ever! If you are a John Lydon fan, like I am, you will walk away from the PiL concert experience feeling completely satisfied and then some. No opening band, just 2 hours and over 10 minutes of great music and banter. The Club Nokia Theatre is by far the most incredible place to see a show. This was my first experience and cannot wait to go back.

Super Swell, over the top, i saw the sex pistols reunion in the 90's and it was great but this blew that away. Johnny was playful and not too whinny. The audience was a bit too Los Angeles cool but typical. I was there for PIL and they did not disappoint., a very intimate feeling show.... with Johnny greeting us with "hello neighbors" a show for friends and family with Mr. Lydon's brother in attendance, Johnny hammed it up, even making faces often at his sibling.

t was great seeing the legend in person again. John Lydon, his music, and his persona have been quite an influence in my life. The very first time I heard the Sex Pistols, I realized that I could make music if I wanted to. I remember the moment vividly. It was literally as if night changed into day and I was suddenly able to see the world clearly for the first time. You don't often have moments like that in life and you certainly don't forget them. The last time I had seen PiL was in July 1992 for the (legendary amongst my friends) video shoot at Iguana's in TJ. John was in top form that night (as always?), and John McGeoch (guitar god) and Mike Joyce (drummer for The Smiths) were in the band. It was a night to remember. The show at Club Nokia was equally memorable, due largely to an amazing two hour setlist that spanned the length of PiL's history. To hear "Albatross" wash over me live and loud for eleven minutes is my idea of heaven. That he played a further four songs from Metal Box made the night immutably brilliant. Perhaps the highlight of the night, though, was the audience singing the refrain "Anger is an Energy" over and over during Rise. I don't normally sing along at concerts, but that idea has resonated so strongly with me over the last 24 years that I couldn't help but sing out. It was indeed great to see the legend in person again. * (This is Not) A Love Song * Poptones * Tie Me to the Length of That * Albatross * Swan Lake (aka Death Disco) * Flowers of Romance * Psychopath * The Warrior * USLS1 * Disappointed Encore (John needs a pee break!) * Religion * Bags * Chant * Memories * Public Image Encore (John needs a smoke and a beer!) * Sun * Rise (with "Anger is an Energy" audience reprise!) * Open Up

PIL held true to my music heart last night, playing brilliantly. And as usual, the Los Angeles crowd, who need to hold tight to their coolness, never moved to a beat (except for us). PIL showed their crowd that after 25 years, they are still more interesting than most current bands today.

Lydon was in top form. He gave a good show for someone of any age, let alone his own, which he jokes about with humor and candor. The musicianship of the band was wonderful - bass player is versatile with an upright electric or a standard electric, the drummer never stopped smiling, and the guitarist was illegally talented. They played the best ofs and a few rarer gems. That was two hours of awesome if you ask me.

Getting to the venue was odd, being across the street from Staples center with a Laker game going on made for an interesting mix in crowds in the parking lots. After waiting what seemed like forever for the show to start (no opener) we were very pleased to see Mr. Lydon hasn't lost his touch. His voice hasn't deteriorated at all over the years and was very animated with his facial expressions and dance throughout the nearly 2 hour set. Most of the set consisted of the more obscure tracks that really aren't dance-able, but flawless nevertheless. When the occasional PiL song that had heavy rotation was played the crowd erupted. Johnny looked quite pleased and was very talkative with the crowd - and pleasant! Unless of course you were a journalist or record exec.... they were warned in the first minutes of the show to leave. Great show, would absolutely see it again.

My ears just stopped ringing after 24 hours. Johnny Rotten (as he is again referring to himself) is riviting. You almost can't take your eyes off him. Robotic in his movements, gargling with brandy and spitting into some trash can, threatening the jackass who spit at him, his wailing for almost 2 1/2 hours was nothing short of amazing. The updated version of the band is quite good. If I had to describe the actual 'music', I guess it's a combination of dub meets screaching rock, but that doesn't do it justice. The BASS, always the main focus of PiL, grabs and holds and doesn't let go. If you see them, I highly recommend you buy earplugs. You won't need them until he begins his rant to introduce Religion. When he demands more bass from the sound man, be careful. It's like getting punched in the gut so hard the air actually thickens. When you think it can't possibly get louder, it does. But even that pales before the final encore, Open Up. Then you'll thank me for the heads up. Believe me, 1/2 the crowd were holding their ears. It's like being next to a jet engine in a violent thunderstorm. I've seen The Who, Zeppelin, and Lee Michaels up close and this was more overpoweing. The highlights for me were This Is Not A Love Song (set opener), Annalisa, Warrior, Flowers of Romance, Death Disco, and Chant., although pretty much everything but Sun was great. Enjoy the show!

John Lydon and the boys are taking all of the right Vitamins for self preservation. They outlasted my 30 something wife and I. Played a long set w/ 3 encores of all of the oldies and newer hits. Johnny seemes to be in awesome form and sounded amazing. I had read a bit about his awful voice, but I felt that he sounded like a diva. There was politics in his banter (talking about religion and the Bush years), which was a little lost on our audience, but made up for it with the incredible sound generated. Williamsburg Hall of Music is such an awesome venue. Incredible audio and no bad views even from behind the soundboard. Catch PiL wherever you can, it will blow your mind!

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I went to see PIL. Last time they toured I was in high school and that was a while ago. However, I really expected the crowd to have more energy. Johnny Lydon had more energy and he's older than anyone in the room. Granted, I think the average age of the crowd was 45 but everyone didn't seem excited to be there. Maybe most people were saving their energy for the taped concert the next night. I think PIL also saved the best songs for that night. They played well but I would've liked more of the high energy angrier songs and didn't get that with this show. Basically I was "Disappointed" at the crowd.

Wow. John Lydon seems to be doing the best shows now that he is in his 50's compared to 20 or 30 years ago with PiL. The show was amazing and his band were great. The guitar player was like a character out of an Oliver Twist novel. John has forged a unique sound that is his alone and much like painters painting, or a poets poetry, really expresses his personal outlook and soul, encompassing politics, personal beliefs, and experience in this thing we call life. Was blown away by his message of "oneness" and how we all were included in this family of people his music has created called PiL. Go Johnny Go.

From start to finish one of the best rock and roll shows i've ever seen. PiL launched right in with This Is Not A Love Song and ran song after song with unbelievable intensity. Lydon's voice was unreal, strong every note attacked with purpose. His dancing was something bizarre yet had a soft pleasant feel that I could watch forever. The band rocked every song hard with wild, fast, yet precise flailing on some kind of guitar, numerous basses and drums. Building and building each song into a wild frenzy like a left right punch. The show was sick, beautiful, stuck in my head, something you never see anymore. One of those shows i'll never forget

I understand that this tour is in support of their new album. But fans of older acts pay money to hear the songs they're familiar with and love. They played at least four tracks from their new album but omitted favs such as "Seattle", "The Order of Death", "Rules and Regulations" and "The Body". They did play "Rise", "Warrior", "Home", "Death Disco", "Disappointed", "The Flowers of Romance" and opened with "This Is Not a Love Song" though.

PIL in Williamsburg was a truly great show. The nearly 2.5 hr set made up for the terrible 2 hrs of DJ treacle that preceded it. Johnny Rotten/Lydon still has the chops and the attitude (nice job threatening to smash the face of a spitter!) and tell it like it is ("I'd tell you you all look as good as ever, but I'd be lying"). Solid set from start to finish with highlights of Love Song, Public Image, Flowers of Romance, Religion, Tie to me to the Length of That & Warrior (others may differ in faves). Alas, Johnny sped off w/o signing anything. Do you ever get the feeling you've been swindled? Not me last night! My ears are still ringing (which is a good thing)

An earth-shatteringly wonderful show, and experience in general. Beautiful theater! John and the band were in top form and tight sounding, despite the pitiful attendance for such an historic show. I traveled over 500 miles one way to see the show, and if work would allow, would do it for every city! Go, even if you "can't go". JUST DO IT! :)

The band was as good as they have ever been. It has been a long time since they came to Chicago, but they sounded great. The show lasted about two hours. I can't say enough about how good it was. It was also nice that Johnny thank everyone for comming out, he sounded like he ment it.

PiL rocked Club Nokia last night for two hours straight! The sound was excellent (music & voice)!! Overall the band was cohesive & enjoying the night by doing what they love for their audience. I totally enjoyed every second. L.A. fans should have gotten more into it though. I recommend people to go see them at least once for this tour. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

Lydon started out the show by saying "This is for friends and family..." and that is what the night felt like, a private session with one of the most influencial voices of our time. The show was a very personal expression of PIL's music that had been re-thought and improvised in such a way that it all sounded new but familiar at the same time. Lydon put us all in a groove last night that was almost, dare I say it, spiritual. Everyone was quietly, eerily, respectful of the music. We were all locked together in this tightly swaying provocative rythym. In my photos of the show you can see that no one is talking, no one is doing anything but listening to the music. And that brings me back to the element of a great show, audience participation and complete captivation. PIL accomplished all of that on their first night of a new tour. Well done! Thanks!

I love PiL and am a fan since Album was gifted to me back in 1987. The show consisted of a lot of unfamiliar songs, as PiL has a large discography and they played many songs from their latest release. I was entertained throughout the show by Lydon, who was entertaining and gracious until the end, in spite of being ill. I smiled from beginning to end and had a great time.

The start of the show was delayed due to the fact that Lydon's voice was ailing him. I wasn't sure what to expect after hearing the news, but was blown away once they took the stage. The band was excellent and Lydon delivered everything the crowd expected. The venue was small and packed from wall to wall with fans from those early punk days. This wasn't some comfy old theatrical venue, but a hot and well worn music venue that has been around forever and has seen its share of musical performances. PIL was one to the best shows I've seen all year and I wish I would have the opportunity to see them again on this tour. If you have a chance to see this show do not pass it up. This is a once in a lifetime performance that everyone will be talking about for quite some time.

The show was exactly as I expected except for the age of the crowd. I forgot we are all old punks now. I guess there are a few advantages....no mosh pit and the show went on shortly after 9:00. He did show he is still a performance artist and played for nearly two hours. Old does not equal lame. I wish there had been some younger folks there to see this punk icon....punk icon is definitely an oxymoron right?

Great show, John Lydon has not lost his touch! The band was tight with an impressive mix of musicians, some I believe are original members... Really enjoyed their new songs as well as their classics... And the H.O B. is always a great venue...

A cornucopia a blissful experience of like minded people no words can express thEe experience oV witnessing a "PiL zone" never in my life had I smelled theE amplifiers in thEe venue screaming and begging to be turned down actual smoke came out oV the speakers while Jon Lyndon insisted "more bass, turn up the bass" in a haunting and epic voice. I cannot express that this is a must for all to witness a true company at its best can't wait for the next meeting with thEe PiL company!!!!!!!!!!

It's hard to describe PIL's live sound. I heard someone describe it as a Punk Rock Rave. That is a pretty good description. PIL live is equal parts Punk, Funk, Dance, Trance, Rock, and Theatre. John Lydon is a FORCE onstage. The songs are long and he sings almost every second of them all. No one quite sings like him. Bottom line is, I was blown away by this show! I found myself wishing I didn't have seats and was on the floor so I could dance. I am writing this review 2 days after the show and I am still basking in the afterglow of this show.

This was my first event at Club Nokia and I go to a lot of shows. It was definitely one of the best for atmosphere and sound quality. PiL put on a great show...Johnny's voice sounded amazing and his band was great! I was lucky enough to get a copy of the set list, too!

I had a great time at the show, however, I was a bit disappointed with Lydon and Pil. You would think after not touring for 20 years, Lydon would be excited to be on the road with the band, but I didn't feel his heart was in it. His performance was good, but I didn't feel he had any sort of connection with the audience. I was also surprised they didn't open with This is PIL from the new CD, in fact they didn't play it all.

The show was amazing! They came out w/a bang & w/non-stop energy that never ended. We feed their need for audience participation & love of their music so they delivered nothing but the best from all 4 of them.

PIL was EXCELLENT! Rotten sounded as good as he did, or better than when I last saw him in 1989 at the Palladium. His enthusiasm, stage presence and entertaining were superb. He was very gracious as well. The rest of the band was also very good. PIL fans would love this show. Great selection of their historic works. Terminal 5 continues to be one of the, if not the WORST venue in Manhattan, where it is a struggle to see the band, due to the layout of the venue.

Challenging setlist, ranging from brilliant to absolutely miserable selections. Moderately adequate performance with a rented bassist and second generation performers. Bright spots included "Flowers of Romance" and show opener "This is Not a Love Song". Weakest link? John Lydon/Rotten. The vocal performances on the original recordings are limited, but work. Live he made them even more limited, reducing all of his songs to about three different yelps. His stage presence was no less redundant and repetitive, to the point where he became annoying. And I'm a big fan of his. Band failed to motivate a devoted PiL crowd. Yawns, ear covering, and early departures abounded. "This is called fun" Lydon said near the end of the set, as if he had to forcibly remind people what they had paid to see and didn't get.

18 years since I last saw a Pil show, They are even better. With no album to promote, the band played for more than two hours. Playing a great collection of their songs, the band was tighter than I remember. Johnny was in great form, a great performance. See them, sign them to your label!

Sid Vicious would be rolling over in his grave right about now. PIL with f ront man Johnny Rotton is still rocken and still got a great voice but what I could not understand was the light show. PIL with a light show, what is that??? I gues it is 2010 and not 1980 so he has joined the times. I did not see the spit and vigor in him that I did when I saw PIL around 30 years ago. I also did not see any slamming, surfing or jumping on stage and I wonder if he spit on anyone? The show was good but more modern that I expected. The venue sucked though Terminal 5

Not too often do you get an opportunity to see a living legend like John Lydon plying his craft and -- notwithstanding his advancing years -- at the top of his game. It was an inspirational performance for me and I have been listening to PIL on my BlackBerry ever since the show.
