Aaron Hall, also known as A-Statik, is an American R&B singer who is better recognized as the powerful lead vocalist of the legendary R&B band Guy, one of the representatives of a musical style now known as "new jack swing". Born as Aaron Robin Hall III in the Bronx, New York City, on August 10, 1964, Hall developed his unique manner of vocalizing, characteristic of the times when new studio-recording techniques started dominating in the sphere of popular African-American musical genres.

Aaron Hall

Aaron Hall originated from a family with church connections that, in combination with his exposure to urban contemporary music of his native city, influenced him greatly as an R&B performer. Thus, this vocalist never tried to express himself through quiet melodic singing, but preferred smooth falsettos alternating with powerful, almost urgent sounds of his voice.

Career in "new jack swing"

Being talented enough, Hall managed to join a new musical project in new jack swing and became famous by participating in the formation of the band "Guy" together with the famous producer Teddy Riley and another vocalist of the band, Timmy Gatling. The first studio album of this formation was issued in 1988 and contained such a popular hit as "Groove Me". Two years later, the band issued its next successful album "The Future".

Important albums and singles

  • the band Guy debuted in 1988, issuing the album "Guy"
  • two years later, the album "The Future" was released and was marked by the hit "Let's Chill"
  • 1993 brought the solo album "The Truth"
  • participation in the soundtrack to the film "Juice" ("Don't Be Afraid") in 1992

Solo activity

Having become the face of Guy, Hall continued his career as an R&B musician, creating his personal musical projects. Thus, in 1993 he presented his solo album called "The Truth", and among many other singles another popular single was released, namely the song "Don't Be Afraid". Moreover, he became well-known as an author of guest appearances on numerous R&B projects.

The peculiarity of Hall's career was that he always managed to convey his deep feelings with the help of his voice — he could use different kinds of falsettos or just powerful, urgent vocals that could create a strong emotional atmosphere.

As for Guy's music, the most popular tracks were definitely the following: "Let's Chill" and "I Like". He performed them together with Timmy Gatling, whose voice was less prominent than the singer's but had some features too.

What should be paid attention to

This musician plays a very significant role in R&B history. He was a representative of an important transitional period between classic soul music style and its modern version characterized by high professionalism of sound engineers. As he performed with his unique powerful, urgent voice, Guy was able to add life to otherwise purely technical and calculated new jack swing.

Aaron Hall and other members of "Guy" performed at a time when African-American popular music started its reformation due to new ideas of singers and composers. Therefore their music, especially their hit songs, will always remain classic.
