A character actor can prove his skills just as well by playing small parts, while at the same time such a career may be very long-lasting.
The thing that distinguishes Thompson is that he has the powerful screen presence. Brian Thompson has a specific screen appearance that speaks for itself, as it suggests certain threats. At the same time, what adds to the diversity of the actor is that he knows how to play various emotions, which do not include simply aggression. Brian Thompson can be cold, amused, irritated, and the like. The presence of these different aspects makes his parts really memorable when he makes a quick but distinct appearance in a film or a TV show.
Another reason why so many people are well aware of the name of Brian Thompson is because he has often played in projects that have a clear individual style—action movies with a certain hard edge, interesting science fiction stories, and the like. All his parts could differ from other typical tough guy types, since he does not need to look like any leading actor to impress.

Such a type of role can be found quite often, and it can happen that some actors become famous for such type of work, while for others it can be more difficult to get it. Nevertheless, it turned out that Thompson knew very well how to bring some needed tension to any movie.
TV shows provided Brian Thompson with other good opportunities to work. Television is full of series where the actor managed to perform parts of some regular threats, memorable guests, and other things of this kind. One of the most popular of such associations is the series called "The X-Files". This series was full of actors who could play various types of men full of conspiracies, secrets, dangers, and other features important in the atmosphere of such a kind of film.
What makes his television work noticeable is the range of roles played by the actor even within this narrow range.
