Jermain Defoe is one of the most famous English strikers of his generation. A talented footballer who played in multiple positions for the team and across eras of football, he was a professional who managed to sustain a long and successful career in the Premier League. Defoe was born on October 7, 1982, in Beckton, London. The striker was known for quick reflexes, fast movements, anticipation skills and accurate finishes.

Club achievements of the footballer were impressive. Jermain Defoe represented West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Toronto FC, AFC Bournemouth and Rangers; thus, he left an imprint of his talent on many teams during his career. The English striker was famous not only for playing for many popular teams, but also for his successful games with the national team of his country – England.

Early years

Jermain Defoe represented his first team – West Ham United – already in 1999. At the beginning of his career, Defoe proved what he really was: a fast runner who relied on his skills instead of being a physically powerful and tall forward. As the striker of West Ham United in the early years of his career, he proved that a forward does not need many warm-up exercises to change the dynamics of the match: Defoe was a player who could affect the game even if a striker made only one good run, a defender made one bad ball touch, or the striker managed one goal within ten seconds of the attack.

His loan to Bournemouth contributed to Defoe's growth and success since in this period the forward trained his skills in conditions which allowed him to develop all abilities and skills. Defoe was able to play in crowded penalty boxes, he could attack and not wait for the pass, and his play was effective in various conditions. Such training and experience contributed to Defoe's success in his further career: he gained fame as one of the most flexible and adaptable players.

This ability to make an impact with the minimum amount of touches was especially useful in the time when changes in the Premier League were frequent and rapid. Thus, Defoe's career was rather long and successful in a period of constant transformation and change in top-level football in the country.

Career at Spurs and his skills

Transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004 allowed Defoe to appear in front of a more numerous audience, which recognized his playing abilities and became acquainted with the footballer as one of the most prominent figures of the Premier League. He made Tottenham an example of his successful career since he proved his scoring ability at Tottenham, firstly and afterwards during his second stay in the team. This forward was a player who could guarantee scoring results from a small number of opportunities due to his style of play.

In particular, Defoe was a fast player with the ability to finish fast and accurately; he attacked spaces ahead of his opponents instead of waiting for the ball. This combination was effective for the striker not only in terms of goals. It was useful for sustaining his career for a rather long period because he used his intellect and not purely his physical skills.

The main characteristics which made this striker a professional and successful one were:

  • Quickness and timeliness of running through the back line
  • Quick and accurate finishing inside the penalty area
  • Aggression and desire to press an opponent in order to catch a lost ball

All these features of Defoe's playing style were helpful both in defensive and attacking roles. Defoe was a perfect forward who could play alone, as well as together with another striker; he could influence the situation in the game as a substitute for a starter. Tottenham was not the first or only team which could benefit from Defoe's playing style. In 2008, he joined a team which played much more rarely in the Premier League, Portsmouth. Then, two years later, he had a second opportunity to show his talent, playing for a big English club – Tottenham Hotspur.

Also, Defoe's career in the Premier League helped him attract the attention of managers of the England national team: they chose Defoe for England and used this forward at some important tournaments like the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

International and later achievements

Defoe's career was impressive enough due to his ability to make moves not expected for an English striker, for example to the MLS team in Canada, Toronto FC, in 2014, and this decision was made not at the end of his career, but in middle years. In other words, Defoe proved that he wanted to develop as a forward even if he moved from one league to another.

Then, in 2015 Defoe came to Sunderland, which was in the first league of England, and here he showed himself as one of the most promising attacking players; moreover, in the 2017 season Defoe played for Bournemouth in the Premier League, making yet another addition to an already rich career.

Defoe joined Rangers in 2019 and contributed to winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021; this period also shows Defoe's ability to be successful playing in another league which has its own footballing culture. At the same time, this case proves that the forward did not forget his strong skills when he changed leagues. He still showed his ability to finish, to play quickly in the penalty areas and to press defenders. Moreover, at Rangers, Jermain proved that he was no worse in this game than other footballers.

The second transfer to Sunderland in 2022 and the following retirement of the player ended his long and successful career.

Conclusions

Defoe was a striker who had a lot of different positions in clubs of English and Scottish leagues. However, it does not mean that he forgot about some characteristics and skills which distinguished him as an original player in spite of changes in football. It should be emphasized that he never stopped being a forward who could influence the penalty box situations, finish accurately and timely, and play with a maximum of efficiency in different tactical systems.
