One of the distinctive features of Rod Wave, one of the most notable figures in modern hip-hop, is his ability to sound genuine. Fans are familiar with Rod Wave's songs not because of his fame, status, and reputation, but because he talks from his own experience and shares his truths in melodies and verse. The man who became one of the recognizable faces in modern popular culture went from being a nobody in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is now an internationally recognized rap singer.

Real name and roots

His real name, Rodarius Marcell Green, reflects what kind of person Rod Wave is: direct, personal, and deeply rooted in his past and experience. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, he managed to build a career as a unique artist using rap and a combination of different musical genres and emotional songs based on his life, its difficulties, struggles, and successes.

Growing up in St. Petersburg, his music gained a Southern flavor. It seems that even without being a representative of the tourist scene in St. Petersburg, he manages to transfer the atmosphere of the city through melodies and verse. Many of his melodies sound heavy, thoughtful, and sometimes nostalgic and seem to come not from imagination but directly from experience, giving the artist the chance to express his individuality.

Also, his last name and stage name perfectly correspond to the music he produces. Using "Rod" from his real name, in combination with "Wave," the artist gives his melodies a smooth rhythm like the waves in the river. Rod Wave is not a performer of the type whose music and lyrics are full of rhymed words and technicalities of rapping. On the contrary, Rod Wave is a versatile rapper, who often combines singing and rapping in one melody.

The popularity of the music and its author has increased due to melodies that are not only interesting but emotional. Being sincere and showing pain and vulnerability, his music touched the hearts of thousands of people all over the world.

Breakthrough into rap

Rod Wave's breakthrough into rap music became possible with the release of his debut album, Ghetto Gospel (2019). The author managed to prove through this project not only his uniqueness but also the ability to create commercial music that is deep in sense. Moreover, in addition to rapping, he started incorporating singing in his music. After the release of the breakthrough song, Rod Wave created the project Pray 4 Love (2020). This project includes the song "Rags2Riches" performed with Lil Baby and shows how natural Rod Wave's sound is, in combination with other musicians and in isolation from someone else's influence. There are some themes typical of all the music he performs:

  • turning pain into melody;
  • faith and hardship;
  • family, loyalty, and experience;
  • survival, development, and emotionality.

Albums and signature songs

With the help of these melodies, the artist became popular.
