Washed Out

Washed Out

Sometimes a concert ticket is really a portal to a dream world. Such is the case with Washed Out, the stage name for South-Carolina-reared and Georgia-based sound artist and multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Since his songscapes began spreading around the Internet in 2009 (his breakthrough EP Life of Leisure was an instant critical darling), Washed Out, which tours as a multi-piece band, has been recognized as one of the chief innovators of the nascent 'chillwave' movement. Creating mood music of the highest order, Washed Out combines groves hatched in the '70's, synth pop from the '80's, and ambient music of the very near future to create electronic sound both startlingly unique yet strangely familiar.

THE most rapturously fabulous sound experience possible in this dimension. I CAN'T BELIEVE I actually managed to buy the ticket and drive to Philly for the show on Friday the 13th, the day I FOUND OUT about it.

The venue was literally the perfect size; there were a lot of people but I felt like I had a ton of breathing room compared to other venues. The HVAC in the building was perfect and never during the entire concert was it ever too hot or cold. The opener (Haerts) seriously warmed the crowd up just the right amount and Washed Out blew my mind away entirely. I wasn't even intoxicated and it was incredible. The stage craft was my absolutely favorite part, closely seconded by the way the wooden floors of the Wilbur vibrated with the intense bass produced by the crystal clear speaker amplification systems. I'd definitely see Washed Out again, and I'd definitely go to the Wilbur for another show anytime.

Washed Out brings a sense of aw-inspiring music, and Ernest Greene (Washed Out) has set the stage for the chillwave movement and has taken it to a new level. Washed Out performance was great, they're music moves through your body and ignites your soul. I would like them to come back anytime. I just wish there was more people to enjoy the show with everyone that came.

The Washed Out show was amazing. Sitting in the seats was not as enjoyable, but there is plenty of seating and it seemed that moving to GA wasn't an issue either. The performance, lighting, and stage was incredible!

While I've been a huge fan of Washed Out, I wasn't sure how it would translate live on stage. Based on some YouTube videos, I was a little gun shy of Washed Out's "live" performance abilities (knowing Ernest Greene composed the majority of the music on his bedroom studio). However, his LA performance blew away all expectations! In fact, it was one of the best shows I've seen in quite some time (and I see a fair amount of shows every year). I highly recommend catching Washed Out!

Washed out is one of those bands that you know when you go to see them perform live.. they are either going to exceed you expectations.. or well, call it what it is.. suck. Washed out, needless to say, met and exceeded my expectations. Being a band that sounds quite overly produced on the record (but dont get me wrong.. I dig them like crazy).. it left me a bit apprehensive as to how they would sound live. In addition to their live sound.. they are bit on the "dream psychedelic" rock side.. many tracks slow and melodic.. so how are they going to keep the crowd alive, engaged.. and well, awake? Well first off, their opener Andre' Obin, made sure the crowd was all riled up and ready for Washed out.. keeping with the nugaze/dream rock sound.. but a bit more fast paced and energetic. But as for washed out.. they did an excellent job of reworking some of the songs to be a bit more upbeat and faster paced for their live set, adding a bit of "funk" sound to some of their more sleep-worthy tracks (and I say sleep worthy in a GOOD way). Also, the stage presence and energy was fantastic, and they really are they type of band you want to see in a "smaller" venue ( none of that wanna-be hipster mumbling in the mic nonsense). So overall, excellent show (check out Andre Obin too!), get out there and check em out.. before they hit "the big time"

Washed Out and Andre Obin fish bowled our heads with etheral sound on 4/20. It was upsetting to find out the Memoryhouse was missing due to their gear being stolen, hopefully they have caught the punks. But to compensate Andre Obin got the crowd going with his opening track "Soft Rain". It's dancy beat, groovey arpeggios, and Justin Broderick esque voice really set the mood. Washed Out performed as expected and was reciprocal of crowds vibes. Good times.

Been waiting two albums to see Washed Out in Boston, and it was worth the wait. They played a fantastic show to a packed crowd on (appropriately) 4/20. Originally scheduled opening band Memoryhouse had to cancel two dates due to their equipment being stolen, but Boston solo electronic musician André Obin filled in at that last minute. Fortunately, his lush, dark electronic sound was just the right mood to open for Washed Out.

I was really excited about this show not only for Washed Out but also to see Memoryhouse. After Memoryhouse got their equipment stolen, they could not perform this show. Andre Obin filled in last minute and put on a strong performance. His first two songs in particular really grabbed me and I could tell the crowd was enjoying it as well. He has really cool electronic layers and a sweet, maybe a bit feminine voice. His set up was really minimal with just a few synths, laptop and microphone for vocals. It actually kind of reminded me of what Washed Out used to sound and look like on stage before he had a full band. The toughest part of the gig was the long delay in between acts but that was really my only complaint. Washed Out took the stage drenched in pink and purple lighting that really added to the atmosphere. The band was tight and executed flawlessly. My friend wanted the vocals higher in the mix but I thought they sounded right where they were supposed to be. The live bass guitar really pumped through the Paradise's sound system. While the songs might not sound exactly like the record, they translate well from electronic to the new rock like set up. "Feel it All Around" and "Eyes be Closed" were simply phenomenal. It was a great way to celebrate 4/20. ;)

IT was a nice show and the music of course was great, but the vocals for Washed Out are such a harmonistic element and they were turned way down compared to the instruments...In the future hope that won't happen. I was sitting right behind the soundboard which should really be the best seat in the house for sound too...

Ernest Greene did a great job of enlivening the crowd and adjusting songs to work the live concert environment. Some songs were actually unrecognizable, which at times was a perk and once or twice a bit of a let-down (sometimes you just want the song in its classic form). All of his songs were dreamy and fantastical and surprisingly invigorating - by the last song (before the encore, of course), everyone let loose (even the reserved head bobbers) and was dancing.

I am a huge Washed Out fan and reviewed several videos of the band's live performance before purchasing tickets, as I know they are heavy on electronics and some electronic bands have a hard time recreating their sound live. The videos I saw were very promising. Unfortunately this was a very bad night for Washed Out. The doors for the show opened at 8pm. The opening act, Memory House, had their equipment stolen that day, so there was a delay and a disappointing opener who came on at almost 9:30. The sound for the opener was terrible and far too heavy on the bass. We hoped that this would be corrected by the time Washed Out took the stage and blamed the sound on the hasty scheduling of the opening act. The opener was done a little after 10, however Washed Out did not take the stage until 11. It was obvious prior to the beginning of their set that they were having technical difficulties as two crew members sat onstage with iPads and laptops in their laps and heavily furrowed brows for nearly 20 minutes. When they finally took the stage the overwhelming bass levels completely drowned out the vocals and it was hugely disappointing. We stayed for 2 songs and left. I completely blame the band for the horrible sound, I've been to dozens of shows at the Paradise Rock Club and have experienced flawless sound on multiple occasions. Whether it was their technically challenged equipment, the difficulties of their openers earlier in the day, or their own indulgence in the "4:20" holiday, Washed Out clearly were not putting on a quality show. I sincerely hope that other Washed Out fans will not be as disappointed as I was at future shows, but I sure as heck will never buy tickets to see these guys live again.

Ernest Greene, one of the founders of the newly established "Chill-wave" genre (I am not a hipster, I am just noting the associated genre, as you will find him classified that way mostly everywhere), is a bedroom composer who has established himself as the ringleader of this type of sound. That being said, DO NOT EXPECT TO HEAR THE ALBUMS HE HAS MADE DURING HIS LIVE PERFORMANCE You will not hear it. Rather, you will hear the version that Ernest Greene's live ensemble has rendered for venue performances. It's quite different, but quite good as well. In fact all of the songs are. None of them will have the same quality as the actual CD, not only becuase it is live, but becuase there are actual instruments being played. This is something i learned from seing Toro y Moi's live set in April in Brooklyn. You will not hear the same sounds, but the feeling is still a good one. I personally like Greene's enthusiasm. You could tell he was excited to be playing, and fell into his groove right from the start. He enjoyed playing, but i am not sure if the always snidely-critical hipster fan base was ready to swallow what he was dishing out. The "Washed Out" moniker still perfectly describes the textures that emulates through the sound system, as I almost always associate these sounds with images of slow-rolling waves on a sunset drenched beach captured by 90's polaroid-esque photography. All in all, Ernest Greene and his live band (Washed Out) are a solid act to see live (if you already enjoy them), and should make your feet move. He does not stray from that very principal, which allows him to stand on top of the cooke-cutter, chill-wave genre that has already sunk many one hit bedroom composers. With his new album "Within and Without" just being released, Greene has a strong collection of songs to be played for crowds in the future.

Greene (Washed Out) had a great stage presence. You could tell he was passionate about his music and his fans, very energetic. His voice isn't exactly the same quality as the effects-laiden studio cuts, but certainly passible for a live performance. The quality of the instrumentals is top notch, adding some depth to the otherwise standard DAW sound on the album. (The addition of the saxophone player on 'Feel It All Around' was great!) If you have a chance to see the show this summer, it's completely worth the money...you'll be surfing to the sounds of one of the movement's top performers.

Blood Orange and Grimes were great and the fact that I was able to dance even though I didn't know who they were or any of their songs says a lot. Washed Out was, of course, phenomenal. Ernest Greene is a really good performer because every so often, he would make sure the audience was still with the music by hyping us up and asking us how we were, ya know? It was nice. I loved that he played new and old songs. I would recommend him to anyone who loves chill music; he is definitely keepin' the wave going.

Firstly, i've never heard of Haerts, the opening band, until like a few days before the concert and they were amazing. An instant favorite. Washed Out was above amazing. It was my first time seeing them live and I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. The vibe and atmosphere in the room was universal. We all felt it. Also, i got there a little before doors opened and still managed a spot in the front row but it got packed fast.

The show was great. Admittedly, there wasn't much information on the opening act.. in fact there were 2. I didn't know or figure it out till the day after when I Googled it to see who esle was playing that night. Anyways. Washed Out was great. I always wanted to see them perform live and when the opportunity came up, it was a no brainer to get tix. They played a lot of tracks from their latest album, Mister Mellow. The highlights were them playing a good number of their older tracks which I really loved. They were just 1 song shy of playing them all, "All I Know".. the crowd was pleased. I also enjoyed the 2 opening acts, DEGA and Peanut Butter Wolf. Both represented some of Washed Out's style in different areas. The only thing with having 3 groups playing total is the total performance got extended much later. I think was supposed to end at 10pm and Washed Out didn't start till about then.. it all ended by around 11:15pm.

This was my second time seeing Washed Out live on the Paracosm tour and, once again, I was not disappointed! It was great to see him finally come down to Florida, playing some of the new songs like It All Feels Right and All I Know and mixing in some of the older stuff we know and love (Eyes Be Closed, Feel It All Around). Unlike most electronic acts, Washed Out has a great live band that bring these songs to life!! Unlike most shows, Washed Out also had a great opening band perform! The quality of washed out's show was unreal. All their songs sound so much more involved and emotional live (as is pretty usual for live music), and the DRUMMING and side chaining of bass to the drums was SO GREAT and loud and powerful. It really shoved the music into a whole new universe. The crowd was great too, everyone was so lively and into it, while still being friendly. It would be easy to just sway and nod to Washed Out but this crowd was dancing and jumping and by the encore they were crowd surfing :D the thing I was most upset about was how short the set was. Washed out also got me really pumped up and then when they were done it felt incomplete and many people milled around by the stage and outside not knowing what to do with their energy. A closer would have been nice, or just for Washed Out to play a longer set!
