Nickel Creek

Seven years after their 2007 Farewell (For Now) Tour, contemporary bluegrass trio Nickel Creek are making good on their promise of a reunion, hitting the road in support of 2014's A Dotted Line —their first new album since 2005. Featuring innovative fiddle, mandolin, and guitar work, the group's acoustic performances are an impressive display of coordination, highlighted by tight instrumental interplay and intricate vocal harmonies. Celebrating 25 years since their formation, Nickel Creek's 2014 tour will treat fans to their biggest hits alongside material from the new album, with select appearances by country sweethearts the Secret Sisters..

From the incredible opener, Sarah Jarosz, to the end of Nickel Creek's fantastic set, this experience was pure delight. Nickel Creek showed us that taking a break, can indeed be a good thing. They have come back strong, and ready to give a great show. As an avid concert goer, I see quite a few shows a year, and this is the first time I can remember in a VERY long time that the crowd was not glued to their phones. Surely it had something to do with the 'maturity' of the crowd, but I also attribute this to the talent on stage. You didn't want to waste a minute of it looking at your facebook, emails or texts. We enjoyed the lighthearted banter between the band members, the kind and engaging crowd, and the music...oh, my gracious, the MUSIC!!! Just a joy to have been present for such awesomeness. This is a band I will clear my calendar for again and again. SO worth it!

We had seen Nickel Creek in Charlottesville back in April, and they were very good that night but they were even better on this night in Portsmouth. Sara sang lead on a lot more songs than at the earlier concert and Chris was a little less manic. All in all a great night, even though we ended up having to get towed home when the car died on the way home after the show.

Each of the members are technically and musically outstanding, but when they play together it is pure magic! I was blown away by their tight harmonies and musical explorations - I was listening to the mandolin and fiddle in a whole new way with some of their tunes. I took my son and daughter to this concert, and at the end of Chris Thiele's singing, "Light House" my daughter said, "It was so beautiful it made me cry!" All three are masters of their instruments and it was simply an amazing show.

The musicianship was off the charts. I saw Nickel Creek on their last tour and they were great. This show took the song arrangements to a new level and all of the musicians seemed very relaxed on stage together. Go see them before they get back to their other projects!

A standing ovation before a note is played. Nickel Creek wowed the sold-out 2,500 seat Asheville U.S. Cellular center. The musicianship was impeccable, whether it was in playing a long string of thirty-second notes at breakneck speed or it was lightly plucking a few single notes with the steady hands of a surgeon--Nickel Creek was a perfectly synchronized machine -- reminding one of something a collaboration between Lamborghini and NASA might produce. Their well-crafted, beautiful songs were played with the utmost respect and feeling by all members....Sara Watkins, Chris Thile, Sean Watkins, and bassist, Mark Schatz. Their respect and appreciation for the audience was obvious throughout the 1.5 hour concert...with easy interaction between them--at one point even inviting those who could whistle to join in at the end of on tune. I am a musician and I discovered Nickel Creek in 2000. I'd say that their chops on their instruments hasn't degraded one single bit (May be even better , if you can believe that).. But I feel quite strongly that their vocal work, as soloists and as a group is even better than ever. All this means that an evening with Nickel Creek is an evening in the presence of world-class musicians, playing high grade compositions with a level of joy and awe that is difficult to come by these days. As an older guy and lifelong music fan I have seen some of the top musical acts from the past 45 years (Santana, Doobie Brothers, Vienna Choir Boys, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Chick Corea Elektric Band, Del McCoury, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Ray Charles, Blue Highway, Dixie Dregs, Chicago, Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra, Pat Metheny Group, Yellow Jackets, Mountain Heart, Rooney, the list goes on and on...) and this concert with Nickel Creek was in the same category as these super-groups. The reaction of this Asheville audience solidified my thinking that many of us real music fans are thirsty for this kind of real music...people playing real instruments...playing quality compositions..together in harmony...without any reliance at all on electronic gimmicks, sound tracks, or mindless sonic fillers which I see as so much a part of the music scene today. During the last song of the evening...a slow, thoughtful composition...from our eighth row seat....I asked my daughter to turn around and look at the rest of the crowd. We could see that very single one that I could see was standing there quietly..and still...almost reverently...just soaking in this wonderful music. An amazing sight. The evening was electric....and we were all spellbound. These are the experiences in life that are the most memorable....and that we all need more of.

This was the second night of their tour, but it seemed like they had been on the road for weeks. They played their old music like they had not had time away from the stage together--and their new music was solid. The crowd was a youthful Asheville bunch and they were enthusiastic and loud.

This was opening night for NC in Birmingham. After 6 1/2 years of not performing together, I was amazed at how TIGHT they were. They never missed a note or a lick and played for about 2 hours straight. The harmonies were impeccable, the playing blazing hot, and the energy sky high. Best concert we've been to since seeing Jesse Cook. Plus, the sound quality and atmosphere in the Alabama Theater was outstanding. What a great night!! RM

The Secret Sisters were a wonderful way to open the concert! I had only seen their album cover around my college town, so it was a treat to hear them live in concert. At first the sound system wasn't working quite right, but when the mics balanced out, these two ladies had a knockout sound! Their harmonies were tight! My only remark is that they could work a little on their stage presence between songs. Well worth hearing, and lovely to watch though! Nickel Creek... all I can say is that they were absolute perfection. Just when I thought their albums were the best I'd heard, they proved me wrong by performing flawlessly to a packed house. Sara's voice was gorgeous, Sean had a great attitude, and Chris really rocked out to his mandolin solos! Of course, all three performers are insanely talented instrumentalists. The bass player was spot on, as well. So glad he got a chance to buck dance during the encore. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and joy onstage! The entire experience was heightened by the ambiance of the beautiful, historic Alabama Theatre. Three thumbs up, y'all. Perfect, perfect concert!

What musical notes the four of them can put together and hold onto! Each with their unique style of play and voice, like sweet and sour nicely put back together. Would like to see them on the Grammy's; they definitely need to make some big appearances. Ntelos is such a perfect venue that can take in the breeze off the water. The artists enjoy it as well.

Great show, the performers were flawless... but there were two distractions (which is why I don't give it five stars). 1. Sarah Watkins and Chris Thile were sarcastic with the audience and their "patter" at one point devolved into a banal discussion of the adjacent shipyard. 2. A horn went off several times during the pre-show music, and it was annoying. Otherwise, what's not to like? These performers are on top of their game musically.

Nickel Creek did a fabulous job at the St. MIchelle Winery last weekend! They were musically tight and vocally spot-on! I loved how they would move around the stage and circle up and jam with each other. It felt very spontaneous. They had a great setlist that included most of their biggest hits as well and their fun new songs - perfect balance of old and new.

Nickel Creek is definitely unique; and, yes, that rhymes. I have heard a lot of bluegrass and Americana bands, but Nickel Creek transcends those genres. Their music is hard to describe in its totality, so all I can say is awesome! Besides their music itself, which is a tribute to their songwriting, they are all extremely talented musicians, and very entertaining. In addition, the banter between songs was nothing less than hilarious! I hope to see them again real soon!

We had a great time, loved the venue! My only complaints about the winery was that it seemed that the "no lawn chairs over 28 in. tall" was not totally enforced, so I had a hard time seeing the stage over a couple inconsiderate people. Also, I was shocked that they didn't serve beer. I realize that it is a winery, not a brewery, but with all the brewerys in Woodenville, it wouldve been nice if a collaboration could have occured =) The band was great, played all their best songs, and it was overall a very relaxing evening.

Opening band was just OK and then long wait for Nickel Creek to start. Had to sit at the furthest edge of the lawn and got there an hour early. Those coming after had to stand up all evening. Virtuoso performances by all the individuals in the group, most particularly Thile and Schatz (mandolin and upright bass). These folks play together like they've been doing it since they were born. I have been a big fan for a long time, but had never seen them live. My expectations were very high and they delivered, and some. Everything from the song choices, pacing, and sound quality was superb! They are an amazing band with virtuoso talent. Even if not a bluegrass fan, I would highly recommend seeing them whenever possible. I dub it power NewGrass with a bending of the genre. The Wiltern is a great venue, however, getting people in the door seemed to take way too long and dealing with will call and paperless tickets was a mess. It caused the show to start over 45 minutes late or more. They need to fix that. Supporting act Secret Sisters were also a treat and very fun. Great choice for opening the show.

Nickel Creek has added new songs and an excellent stage presentation to their performance, and they've also added new sounds to some of the older songs from their earlier albums. The authenticity and talent this band has is God-like! I was so inspired by the performance. I cried to the last song they played, "Where is Love Now". It touched my heart! I also loved Chris' stage presence. You can tell they all love what they do but Chris had such a playfulness about him that was contagious and refreshing. The show was Awesome! The crowd was so into the fact that they were "back" that everyone was just taking in every sound. It was like a long overdue reunion with their fans. Chris Thile...what can I say about him that hasn't been said? If you never wanted to play a stringed instrument, you would after seeing his performance. Constant motion, and he doesn't really play the mandolin...he IS the mandolin. I could have watched him play all night. He made it seem effortless. The way that Sean and Sara Watkins sang and played blended the entire performance into a masterpiece of music. Many of the songs that they sang were from their last CD, Why Should The Fire Die. I haven't heard any of their current CD yet, except for the ones that they played last night, but the ones I heard were pure Nickel Creek. Go see them if they are near you...you Will Not regret it if you like pure, excellent music.

Enjoyed the Uptown Theater's redo as I have not been to an event there for a few years Was pleasantly pleased with decent acoustics and sound even from our far left seats....However, the theatre--3-star--was way too warm, and the periodic bursts of cooling was inadequate to really feel comfortable...and as usual, in old charming venues, the seats leave little room for toes and knees when there are so many of us larger and taller concert goers.....at times the amplification of concert was unnecessarily loud--almost over-driving the music and vocals--the theater has good sound without over amplification-- Sarah Jaroz--5-star-- could have played the entire event, even tho I am a long time and loyal Nickel Creek fan--Where Sarah is fresh, Nickel Creek--4-star--seemed like the old Nickel Creek with only a couple attempts at contemporary pun songs and a bit more jazz perhaps...would have liked them to do all new stuff and skip the old standbys.... Overall we still enjoyed the music.

Nickel Creek has been my favorite band since I was 15. Each member is an amazingly talented, creative, genius musician. They have all explored many musical genres in their solo careers, which was evident in the fusion of their most recent album together. The collective virtuosity and sweet harmonies of all of them together is a real treat to hear, and seeing the joy they took in performing together had me smiling the entire time. I love seeing people love doing what they're so good at! The atmosphere of their performance and the stage banter was for the most part lighthearted and friendly, even when the topics of the songs were heavier. They sang the last song unplugged and with no cell phones / cameras allowed - it was gorgeous and you could have heard a pin drop afterwards. They were also very kind and friendly to those of us who stayed late to meet them and ask for autographs.

Seven years of hiatus had passed since I last sat and listened to the beautiful folk wizardry of Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek found themselves together again and it was like no time had passed. The three were as jovial and cohesive as ever and their new album was new but still represented the group. The performance was every bit as good as they have always been. They are still the talented group they were when they were considered child prodigies. JUST GO! You will not regret it.

after being on hiatus for almost seven years, the group had not lost its edge at all. the musicianship was crisp as always and the acoustics in the Uptown theatre were great. I figured the set list would be mostly new since they just came out with a new album (which I have not heard yet), but was delighted to see that they included a lot of greatest hits or just personal favorites with their list. Probably about 3/4ths of the songs I recognized from earlier albums. They shared the singing duties as always with no one taking a dominant role in that. I had forgotten how gifted each of them were in their own musical compositions and styles. Loved the encore where they unplugged and sang a parting lullaby to the audience. Nice to hear still strong harmonies along with more mature vocals than I recall in the past. The bass player was great too, and even did a little clogging at one point.

I was so happy to see Nickel Creek get back together. This was my 3rd or 4th time seeing them in concert and their music and talent are great for all genres, ages and venues. They were absolutely fabulous and many of my friends are jealous!

We had an awesome time at this concert. The music was absolutely great and the venue was great too. We brought our short lawn chairs and some snacks and enjoyed the concert with some wine. We went with a couple other people and we all had a fantastic time. The music was so good, I'm definitely buying some of their albums now. We had never heard of them before. They are excellent musicians and great entertainers, it was a stellar live show. The opening act the Secret Sisters were good too, just a slightly different style of music. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish that Nickel Creek would have played longer. The opening act played for 1 hr and then Nickel Creek played for about 1 hr. I would have rather had the opening act play less and Nickel Creek play more since they were the ones we came to see and I liked their style of music much better. But it was all still very enjoyable. We would definitely go again if they came back next year, it was so much fun!

Nickel Creek put on an exceptional show on Monday night. Their set was full of old favorites and new! The opening act was very impressive as well, Sarah Jarosz with her band; including a chellist and violinist. Full of energy and awesome talent! Great show. Great venue. Great music!!

It is so refreshing nowadays to attend a concert where you truly feel as if everything that happens is live and non-processed. Sarah Jarosz and her boys were a perfect opening act, setting the stage for an evening of musicianship and entertainment. They effortlessly performed their music and sounded just like their recordings. When Nickel Creek hit the stage, the bar was raised even higher. Both instrumentally and vocally, their performance was powerful and perfectly executed. Every time they locked into those three part harmonies, you could just feel the sold-out crowd responding to that glorious sound. This ranks as one of my all time favorite concerts ever, and I have attended a lot of concerts in my 59 years of living!

The venue was great! The acoustics of the pavilion were phenomenal, highlighting the unbelievable talent of Nickel Creek and Josh Ritter. Unfortunately, in the orchestra seating, it's quite uncomfortable unless you are a twig! It didn't help that the alcohol on everyone's breath carried throughout the entire venue. Nothing against the event or venue itself, just a personal distaste. All that aside, Nickel Creek put on an impressive show, and I would see them again in a heartbeat.

Loved the opening act - Secret Sisters. They were great - what a sense of humor too! Nickel Creek was awesome too, haven't sounded better. Forgot how entertaining Chris was with his little dances and facial expressions. I've missed them - so glad they came back together. I love the fact that their show has stayed simple - their music doesn't need the flashing lights.

There were a couple of firsts for me during this concert. I'd never been to a blue grass show, I'd never been inside Stage AE, and I'd never seen Secret Sisters or Nickel Creek live. I originally purchased the tickets for my husband who is a fan of Nickel Creek, but by the end of the show, I found myself becoming a fan, as well. Stage AE has an indoor and outdoor venue, I was expecting the show to be outside.. well, it was inside, which was actually way more comfortable, temp-wise, and the area was very spacious. I adored the Secret Sisters. Their harmonies, wit, and charm were all very present during their set and I found myself tapping along. They were an easy slide into the main show. Nickel Creek was full of energy, full of sass, and just plain full of themselves.. of course, why shouldn't they be as they played the hell out of their instruments! I know when they come back through, I'll be seeing them again.

Saw them a few years just before the members when solo. Back together as a band, they have matured in style and sophistication. Nickel Creek was as tight as a live band could be, never missing a step. Newer material is extremely sophisticated, almost orchestral in structure, while it retains a strong connection to bluegrass roots and themes. There is much more to this talented trio than meets the ear.

Nickel Creek sounded amazing playing live, perhaps even better than some of their recordings on their albums. They annunciated and their words sounded very clear as they didn't mumble or slur together the words as they sang. The audience could definitely tell that the band was having lots of fun playing! The reason as to why this isn't getting 5 stars is because of the venue. Stage AE is very cool, however it's mostly standing and the few seats they do have are bleacher seats that were clearly made for people under 5'4" because it's very tight. The atmosphere at the venue was good, though. Overall a wonderful experience and I would definitely see Nickel Creek again!

This show was SO good. The harmonies were outstanding. The mandolin player is said to be the best in the world, and I believe that.

They are one of the best kept secrets around. The college scene would just love these two bands. A little disappointed they weren't outside, but maybe because the threat of rain? I took a friend who hasn't listened to them much and she is hooked! How can such voices remain at smaller stages? It was just incredible and the things is that they don't do anything absurd to draw attention or put on a show- they just enjoy being up there and it shows! And it doesn't hurt to have just amazing voices!

The music was among the best i have ever heard. Secret Sisters was a great opener for Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek is unparalleled in talent and musicianship. They delivered a flawless show. I cannot add to that, if you get the chance, they are a must see, anytime. It will take a Nickel Creek to get me at the venue ever again. Nickel Creek is 5 stars all the way. LC is a zero, therefore I gave the overall show a 4 star

Never seen better musicianship in my life. They're great showmen, too--great chemistry on stage and with the audience. They played all the classics (flawlessly), making the long-time fans like me happy. Their love and passion for their music is without equal; you can tell they're having a great time on stage. I've never been to a better show. Bottom line: these guys have solo careers and other projects outside of Nickel Creek, but when the three of them get together, it's like catching lightning in a bottle.
