Sugar Ray

SUGAR RAY IN CONCERT:Sugar Ray virtually dominated late-'90s airwaves with breezy, SoCal-filtered pop earworms like "Fly" and "Every Morning." Fifteen years later they're still going as strong as ever, hitting the road to headline the 2014 Under The Sun Tour with fellow '90s favorites Smashmouth and Blues Traveler. As far as frontmen go, they don't make 'em more charismatic than Mark McGrath — fans lucky enough to catch the band live on their last tour were floored by his energy and charisma, setting expectations sky high for their upcoming shows. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Sugar Ray formed in Newport Beach in 1986, initially playing the unique brand of funk metal heard on their 1995 debut LP Lemonade and Brownies.

My first show at the Stone Pony was fantastic. It was a hot summer night at the Jersey Shore and the crowd was pleasant from my perspective. 3 of us got there right after Sugar Ray started, so by then GA tix were filling most of the outdoor area.. but since it was so nice - we got to mozy in and out of the Stone Pony getting drinks, taking pictures and finding friends and good place to hang. We werent commited to an any specific area which played to our advantage. Each band was awesome and "FUN" - the entire night was great, drinks were reasonable and Strong! I loved the venue and plan on going back.. and this particular summer tour of bands is great together. 90s revisited!

Mark McGrath and the other members of Sugar Ray were in great form at the concert. It was like a party! You could get very close, since the venue was a bar. I had never been to the Grizzly Rose, and I was still expecting some kind of concert seating, even though it was general admission. But there was a dance floor and tables along the side and back. The ticket said 6 p.m., so we arrived then, figuring the opening band would start then. No. It was just when the doors opened. We got some food and drinks and settled in to wait. The opening band didn't go on until 8:45 and Sugar Ray came on at 10:00! We had been there a long, long time, and been under constant supervision of the waitress. (No wonder the tickets were so reasonable- they made up for it in drinks) When the band did come on, everyone left their seat. There were perhaps 300 people there- less than I figured on. People were dancing to the back of the floor. There were people of all ages and types there. Mark was very cordial, with only a few cuss words. He talked about getting older, and how things change. He talked about focussing on what you really want from life. They have a new album coming out, and I can't wait to get it. They sang all their oldies and really seemed to enjoy themselves. Now that I am more familiar with the venue, I'll be able to plan better.

I really enjoyed this event. All four bands put on a great show, they each had fairly short sets but since there was 4 bands it was ok. Our seats were near the back but this is such a small venue that there really isn't a bad seat in the house.

The line up was great, the sound not so great. The event was weird from the start, the bands came out in a weird order and the sound was not good at all. Each band played about 40 min or so. Just did not have the feel of a good show.

This "amphitheatre" is nothing more than a stage set up on some grass with folding chairs placed in front. It's a carnival atmosphere. The show was awful, with each band performing only a handful of songs. Sugar Ray was the biggest disappointment, with frontman Mark McGrath hurrying through the set, as if he was eager to get off stage and move on. His constant references to the lineup also made me wonder whether he had a problem going on before the night's final band, the Gin Blossoms. The sound quality was good enough, but were the seats necessary? For the amount of money people were charged for those tickets this was not a quality experience.

The show was amazing! The Line up seemed a little backwards, because Gin Blossoms played last! Don't get me wrong I love them, but I thought Sugar Ray was the big name at this concert. Doesn't matter, because it was amazing! The bands sounded great and played all the hits.

It was a terrific show ! Very good nostalgic 90's line up ! Each band played their usual unforgettable hits but , best was each group taking chances outside the box of their steadfasts ! The sound system was exceptional and mixed quite well ! If only the mist and occasional rain drop had stayed away....It would have truly been a Tour Under the Sun ...amongst the beautiful Raleigh downtown sky line !!

It was a great show, we enjoyed all the bands. The only disappointment is that it was billed as Sugar Ray headlining, but they had the opening slot! They were easily the best act of the night and late arriving people missed them (thankfully we did not). Sugar Ray should have closed the show.

Under the sun didn't happen but the evening was fun even with the rain. All 4 bands, Sugar Ray, Uncle Kracker, Smash Mouth and Blues Traveler were all great. They played their hits and they sound as good or better than the first time you heard them. Each band played for about 45 minutes and I wanted each one to play longer. Fun is about the best description of the show.

While none of the bands are super-hot today, this tour will make you wonder why they aren't! Mark McGrath is an amazing front man, Sugar Ray was an awesome opener (although I personally think they should be later in the line up). Both Uncle Kracker and Smash Mouth kept the fans on their feet and singing along. Sean Hurwitz from Smash Mouth is AMAZING on the guitar & those guys REALLY know how to put on a show and get the fans involved. Blue Traveler was my least favorite, and many of the crowd came up to the front (empty) seats. While normally I don't mind this, people were drunk, rude & the music solos were WAAAYYYYY too long. They should have opened the show, since they really only have 3 songs to perform.

Taken as a whole, the concert was a good experience. There were plenty of high points that I have kept in mind as I think about the show, but there were also a few lows that can't be ignored. Let's start with the highs... Mark McGrath and Sugar Ray were engaging and charismatic. It was very clear that Mark was going to do all he could to hype the crowd for the show and to give everyone a good time. The venue staff realized that the crowd would be thinned out, so they allowed movement and overall freedom to the crowd to enjoy the show as they wanted. We bought lawn tickets, but ended up in seats after a staff member acknowledged that there would be plenty of folks not coming out. Blues Traveler put on one amazing show! John Popper and the boys have not lost a single thing in all these years. Their set was, far and away, the best part of the show. Now for the lows... The sound quality for Uncle Kracker and Smash Mouth was less than ideal. As a matter of fact, Steve Harwell's vocals sounded truly bad. Maybe the weather was playing a role in that situation, but in the end it was not what you would expect. Concession prices! My wife and I got a single drink a piece. I got a tall can of Yeungling Lager and she got a 16oz Pina Colada with a double shot of Bicardi Silver Rum. The grand total for the two drinks.... $25 dollars! For that price, I should been given the entire bottle of Bicardi rum and 6 pack of Yeungling! It is very obvious that someone in charge is completely out of touch with reality when it comes to these prices. The fact that there was NEVER a line at the drink stations should be a hint. If not, the littering of "airplane bottles" that were all over the venue should have been a clue. Finally, having a band like Blues Traveler take the stage at 10:30pm in a venue that has a mandatory "curfew" of 11:00pm was a serious lapse in planning. They should have taken the stage no later than 10:15pm in order for the fans in attendance to get the full experience of a Blues Traveler set. Instead, we got BT Light...

This was one of the best concerts that I have been to in a while. I was able to see four of the best bands from the 90s (Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Uncle Kracker, and Blues Traveler) in one night! As Mark McGrath (lead singer of Sugar Ray) pointed out, there is no one group that headlines. Each performer put out their full sets with all of their greatest songs. It will be very difficult to find another show to top this one!!!

The music was good with Sugar Ray being, by far, the most energetic, interactive, and entertaining of the acts. We brought our kids (both under 21) and we wish we knew that the crowd would be physically divided between "under 21" and "over 21" as we probably would have made different arrangements.

The only bad thing was ticket time said 4pm. My husband and I got there on time and had to wait outside on line on the street for an hour to the minute until they could open the gates to let us in, get drinks, etc. Terrible and a definite mistake on either Ticketmaster or Stone Pony. However, once in- even from the music the dj played on the stage while waiting for bands to start was everything I loved music-wise. All the groups sounded great, were fun and Smash Mouth was awesome! Would go to Stone Pony again if ticket times were more correct!

This concert rocked! Mark McGrath really knows how to entertain the masses and keep the party going. He introduced all the bands and sugar ray put on an amazing show themselves! I thought the line up was great and I only wish more 90's bands had joined the tour. Our tickets said the concert started at 7:30 and we got to the venue at 7:15 and Fastball had already started. I was kind of peeved about that. I also thought the alcohol selection was slim pickins outside. We were also under the impression that there were actual seats but it turned out to be one big lawn area, but that proved to work in our favor. We were actually in the front row and I was merely feet away from some of my favorite throw back bands. The staff and security were all very friendly and helpful and there were tons of employees around in case you needed something. I would definitely attend another concert here and also see some of these great bands again.

The reason this concert gets 3 stars and not 5 is because there were 5 bands, only 4 played! Band 1: Fastball. The concert started at 7:30 but Fastball went on at 7, we missed them since we showed up on time. Band 2: Vertical Horizon. These guys were ok, I only knew 2 of their songs and the rest were boring fillers. Band 3: Gin Blossoms. Not a band I really like or even care about but these guys were awesome! Tons of energy and they really played a great set, they sound great and I were a great choice for the #3 band. Sugar Ray was surprisingly 4th; since Mark McGrath was MCing the event I figured his band would go on last. It doesn't matter because these guys were unreal! Seriously, beat act of the night by far. McGrath is an amazing and electric entertainer and his best friend/ORIGINAL lead guitarist still has the chops to rock their catalog of 90's anthems. Closing up the night was Smashmouth. Fun to hear their songs but man did they want to get out of there fast. These guys played most of their songs without a break and meet really interacted with the crowd. They cost my review a star. Wish Sugar Ray would've gone last, those guys stole the show!

Sugar Ray was by far the best concert I had ever been to. A small venue at the House of Blues was the perfect setting. Mark Mcgrath's charisma came through load and clear. My son and I were in the front row, and the fun and friendship the band had with one another was real and genuine which made for an amazing experience for the audience. It was my son's first concert and I know it was an experience he will never forget. I look forward to the next concert they have.

I must admit, I was already a HUGE Sugar Ray fan. I've seen them several times before and knew that I would enjoy the concert. But I am always amazed at the energy this band (with frontman Mark McGrath) manage to pump into a room EVERYTIME I see them. The Dallas House of Blues concert was no exception. Mark never stops moving, dancing, jumping and talks to the crowd between EVERY song. He is so engaging and funny and you can tell he enjoys every minute they are on stage. I've seen him go into the crowd before and find a little kid and have them sing with him. This time he pulled my 12 year old son onstage for a "hip hop jump off" versus another teenager. He made my kid feel like a superstar...hugging him, high-fiving him, completmenting him the entire time. In my son's words, "He acted like he had known me my whole life." The crowd went wild for the 10 minutes this contest took place. It was a great moment in the night! Sugar Ray's music is always spot-on...rocking, fun, sing-along summertime, feel-good music. They do just enough of the older songs and a couple from their new album and then throw in some eighties sing-alongs that keep the entire crowd dancing and singing the whole time. I ashamed that I paid only $12 per ticket to have this much fun. I paid $129 to see Aerosmith two weeks ago and was completely disappointed. It just goes to prove that Sugar Ray is all about their fans and having a great time which is why they have diehard, dedicated fans that have followed them from the beginning. I cannot wait to see them in concert again. I wish some of their new album would get more airplay. There are at least three or four songs that are just as good as some of their original hits. But then again, I'm their biggest fan!

Sugar Ray at the House of blues was an awesome show, and the opening bands were entertaining and fun. Mark, the lead singer, is forty-something years old, but he has the enthusiasm of a twenty year-old. He has amazing stage presence and never hesitates to include the crowd. Some bands just get on stage and perform a show, laaadiidaa, but Sugar Ray likes to get on stage, rock hard, party hard, and have a great time. I would see them again in a heartbeat if they come back to Houston.

The venue was the culture room in Ft Lauderdale, florida. Nice small place nothing fancy about it, as simple as it gets. Cheap drinks, good crowd, standing room only. I would say there was about 200 people. Can it be any better? Private and basic. No over the top crap like in an arena, just great music like sugar ray has always done. These guys play amazing melodies and Mark is a kick ass front man! I've been to many concerts and I put them just below U2 in involving the crowd! I paid $25 per ticket, would have paid $200 easily for that setting. They sold the new album in line and the band signed autographs after wards. Even posed for pics. They were super cool with everybody they met. It was a great time with good energy & great music!

The last time I had the pleasure of seeing Sugar Ray was back in 2002. And 7 years later, they are still just as amazing and crowd pleasing. I have always been a huge fan of them, but my friends aren't. I took a risk taking them along, but they also said it was one of the most entertaining concerts they've ever been to. Mark McGrath has such an amazing stage presence! McGrath and the rest of Sugar Ray really gave an unforgettable show. With the exception of Fastball being horrible, the concert was one of my favorite concerts ever. Aimee Allen, the first opening act, blew me away. When McGrath said she's gonna be the next Gwen Stefani he was so true. When Sugar Ray came on there was so much energy it was incredible. DJ Homicide kept the energy up in between songs with his mixes which were so sweet. I really appreciated the band's interaction with the audience, it made me feel like the guys were just hanging out with all of us...really cool.

Not only did Sugar Ray's entrance difer from all the other bands I have seen live, but their overall attitude towards the crowd was simply unforgetiable. From playing random dance toons from the 80's, such as "Don't Stop Believein" to even "Sweet Child O Mine." But no matter what song they played, the crowd danced and sang along the whole time. They mixed up some of their hits slightly and Rodney even threw in a couple killer guitar solos. Besides all that, they were well practiced and prepared, and you could really tell they enjoyed playing for us.

Love the Newport Beach sound they have created and kept strong! And the live show, INCREDIBLE! They pack an amazing full band sound coupled with terrific lyrics and great energy. All age groups attended, which was really nice to see as well. Some of the young kids were even invited up on stage for a little Karaoke. What fun. The band really encourages particpation of the audience and most of us couldn't get close enough. Thanks to Mark McGrath, who told the bouncers to let us all get as close to the stage as we could. Love Sugar Ray and have been to many of his concerts but was disappointed this time because of the sound quality in this venue. The music was too loud for a small venue and sounded distorted and vibrating and screechy.

Sugar Ray appeared at the Flamingo Hotel as part of their Go-Pool concert series. The beer was cold, the attendants and security were very friendly, and the pool was a welcome site on a day where it hit 116 degrees. The sound system could have been a little better as it didn't do Mark Mcgrath justice, but the concert was definitely worth the price of admission. We are looking forward to more of the concerts at the Go-Pool this summer. It is so nice listening to good music, drinking a beer in the middle of the pool, on a beautiful, Vegas night,

The concert was horrible! We left after 3 songs. He acted like he was high. Started playing almost an hour late. Was really off key. Everyone around us was super disappointed. Wish I could have a refund!

Seeing a show while you are in the pool is great ! I love Sugar Ray`s 90~s music but i was surprised how bad the vocals were ! Dude needs to bring his voice correcting electronics to the show with him !

Sugar Ray put on an amazing show. Mark McGrath is so energetic and engaging with the crowd. It's always a great time seeing them live. They always sound great and I always have the best time of my life at their shows. I would recommend everyone go see them live!

Sponge started off with some great tunes. Lead singer of Everclear was stoned. Lit "lit" it up with "My own worst enemy". Sugar Ray was just plain awesome. A real entertainer.

This was one of the best performances I have seen. Mark was so smooth with his dancing and singing! The band was as good as ever and they were all so appreciative of the fans coming out. Mark was so responsive to the crowd and I really felt like he connected with us since he was sharing so much about himself.

Sugar Ray was fun, but the performance was nothing special. Mark McGrath is definitely past his prime, and his self-aggrandizing performance was dated at best. The band sounded good, and they played several covers of 80's songs that were good times. AIMEE ALLEN, the opener, was fantastic. Even with an acoustic set, her voice rocked the house. I would love to see her tour with a full, plugged-in band. She could headline her own show!

I already wasn't a huge fan of Sugar Ray, but my boyfriend is more so... although he agreed it was not worth the 2 for 1 offer when I purchased the tix for us... If the band had played more of their older stuff and less cover songs, we probably would have enjoyed it more...

Overall the concert was fun. Lots of cool people and the show had a nice vide. They did way too many covers which is not exactly what i was expecting. Although I guess they are an old band and are not making any new music. In the end not a bad show esspecially for the price.

Wow! This was a FANTASTIC concert, from venue to artist. Sugar Ray as a group is just good as they ever were; singing pretty much everything from their greatest hits CD; and Mark McGrath is HOT HOT HOT. Besides great vocals and endless stage energy, he is just the best eye candy. I couldn't believe the jumping up and down, the screaming, the singing along, the arms in the air; seriously, he had the entire room GOING. I think he is an absolutely terrific artist and just completely captivates his audience. I wish the show would have went for another hour. He hasn't lost his talent or his fans in the 6 years since he has preformed in Seattle. I hope he comes back SOON. What a multi-talented HOTIE. Fun concert, FULL of energy, and I love how he talked to the audience. He obviously loves his fans and sounded sincerely grateful for us. Showbox is such a cool venue. Can't wait to go there again.

Sugar Ray was too macho for me. We left on the third song. We really attended to see Aimee Allen who was amazing but didn't get to play as long as we would have liked.

To be honest the opening bands weren't amazing although it was awesome to see fastball they just played a lot that no one knew. But when Sugar Ray came out I felt like I did the first time I saw them in concert. They were amazing!!! The only thing that irritated me was the fact that they weren't selling merchandise and they were the headlining band! Overall Sugar Ray's performance made me forget about the opening acts becaise they were just so great!

Sugar Ray is as great - if not better - than they ever were. Original members still all together. Mark's energy is amazing - he's quite the showman! Greta mix of all my fav SUgar Ray tunes, and some fun covers.

Mark and crew are solid entertainers from start to finish. They did all of their hits and a few from other artists too. Lots of energy and a love for the crowd make Sugar Ray much bigger than the venues they are currently playing. Don't get me wrong, the Showbox market is a great place and I feel lucky to have seen them in such a intimate setting. Sugar Ray failed to play much off of their new "Music For Cougars" album which is too bad as this album is a catchy pop rock album. Catch them live if you get a chance.

Loved the performance, was a little disappointed that they didn't play a few songs I really thought they would but I love how the band is right at the front of the stage. I just wish I didn't annoying girls dancing up on me like I was a pole and screaming in my ear

Well I was really hoping that Sugar Ray would be really good live. The songs they played were. The only downside is that they didn't play very many songs at all. Most of their time was spent trying to hype up the crowd between songs. Each "hype up session" lasted longer than the song they had just played. They played nine songs that were on cds i believe a cover of a song, not on cd, and DJ Homocyde would play records and Mark McGrath would sing along for a minute or so or just have the crowd sing along. I really wish they had just spent time playing their own songs, especially for a band with 6 cds and so many singles. They didn't even get to play all their singles, and even then I was hoping they would play some other songs as well. I would recommend them only cause the songs they do play, they play well.

Sugar Ray was fantastic! They really know how to entertain and keep the place rocking. They sang all their old great songs which were so much fun and some new ones too. The only disappointment was that they did not sing their new Boardwalk song. We had a great time anyway! Thanks Sugar Ray!

They way exceeded my expectations seeing them for the first time ever live as well as the energetic show they put on. Mark McGrath was full of energy and is quite the show man. He knew how to work the crowd and played all their greatest hits as well as some favorites from other various artists too. They kept the crowd going all night long and their DJ was amazing mixing and scratching too. I also must say that seeing them at the House of Blues for only $12 per ticket a Top Tier venue (HOB-Dallas) was unbelievable especially when ticket prices are getting way over priced these days. I treated 3 other friends to the concert for the price of 1 ticket else where. I hope that other bands will jump on the chance to play in Dallas in an intimate venue like the HOB. Can't wait to the see Cult next on Sept 4th there.

Both Fastball and Sugar Ray are fun bands to sing and play along with. All of the band members are obviously music lovers and they have a great time mixing and making great music. The more intimate setting at House of Blues is a perfect way to experience their music and play along with them. Also, the opening act, Aimee Allen was a nice surprise. She has a great voice and their music blends well with Fastball and Sugar Ray. I had a great time and would definitely see this show again if I could. My only complaint is that both Fastball and Sugar Ray have so much more music that they didn't play and especially that, Dallas being home to Steve Miller, Sugar Ray didn't play their cover of Abracadabra.

The music never stop flowing nor did the Band. You can tell these guys have mastered the stage after 21 years of working/touring/ and most importantly making great tunes with one another. The mixture of talent that comes with this group is across the board. The synergy thrown out to the crowd matches the level of talent of the band. Mark sounds as good if not better live then his CD prescence. Drop, Pop, and Rock GUYS!!!! You all rocked Dallas like Friday, given it was Sunday! Keep making the youngsters, Rock STARS!!!!!

The other two acts were great! Fastball & Aimee Allen I would *highly* recommend, but not Sugar Ray. MArk McGrath needs to give it up! The drummer & DJ were the best part of the Sugar Ray act, however, that was not enough to keep us there.. we walked out after about the 4th song.

Really enjoyed the venu and the bands at this event. Fastball was great and so was Vertical Horizon (no surprise). Gin Blossoms were timeless and awesome. Really enjoyed them. Didn't know a lot about Sugar Ray before attending and I have to say, they were the best of the evening. I am now a huge fan. Smash Mouth was a little disappointing. They were over loud, poor sound mix and it seems like the lead singer was drunk. We left after the 3rd song. We love Smash Mouth and have seen them in concert before. This was a little surprising.
