John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp

As one of the rock era’s most distinctive voices, John Mellencamp ruled supreme during the '80s with iconic hits like “Jack & Diane” and best-selling albums like Scarecrow, named one of the best albums of the decade by Rolling Stone. With his raw-edged, high-energy voice and persona and a repertoire of original songs that touch upon every aspect of everyday life, Mellencamp’s concerts provide ticket holders with an unforgettable, visceral experience that resonates long after the show is over. Today, with a brand new album in the works, Mellencamp plans to embark on a massive world tour in 2014. After the success of his 2010 album No Better Than This, the artist has high hopes for his next release, which will include original material as well as collaborative work with legendary songwriter-producer T Bone Burnett.

The grandstand and track seating held a lot of people. Don't know how many, but it looked like around 20,000. Few empty seats. Seemed most were around my age (50s), although there were plenty of millennials. Carlene Carter was boring as an opening act. Mellencamp's set was excellent. He covered every one of my favorites from American Fool on through Big Daddy and more. He seemed young and energetic, and his voice was great. The only disappointment was the lack of an encore. But he finished with my favorite: Cherry Bomb.

I had front row to this concert - it was great. Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter were having a hoot on stage whether John was there or not. They were a fun addition to this tour. I was so excited to be front row for this show - as I am a longtime fan and have seen him many times - but never front row. The venue at Bethel Woods was so "chill"- there was an amazing vibe in the air that night. When John & longtime bandmates took that stage, I was in heaven. Everyone put their best show forward that night (but they are always great). My favorite is always SCARECROW and I had jelly legs and my heart was fluttering the entire song. John makes all his shows about coming together, being themselves, chilling out and having a good time. I have always recommended his shows, but it's awesome how John & the band get better as time passes by.

I love Johns music, I have been a big, big, fan of his since the 70's "I need a Lover" came out. I have also seen him in concert many times. However, this last time we went to see him he talked politics and gave his political views more than he sang! John, we just want to hear your music and that's what we paid for. Please leave your political views at home or at another more appropriate place! I won't be spending money to see him any longer if he continues to keep this up! Just a word of advice to him!

After watching Mellencamp at DTE (Pine Knob) theater for years, and listening to him complain over and over again about having to be done by 11:00pm no matter how long he wanted to play, we thought we were in for a great, long concert at the Colosseum at Caesars. HA! Weren't we sorely disappointed when he only played for 1 hour, 20 minutes. The concert was over @ 9:40pm. The Colosseum was a nice venue for a concert but we are done watching John Mellencamp in person because either he is complaining or we are!!

The concert was awesome. Would prefer more old stuff, but anytime there is anew album it the norm to hear new stuff. Acoustics in the Colosseum were great. I guess being Caesar's I expected more esthetically of the room. But overall it was good.

John Mellencamp put on a wonderful show in Windsor. He always has a top notch band and his solo acoustic numbers were great too. I'm looking forward to getting his new album (25th). I only wish he had played longer, it was about 1 hour 20 minutes of super music, The crowd was into it and he should have gone at least 2 hours. The song list was a hit parade and he always does variations on the songs which makes it enjoyable too. I try to see him whenever I can. The people in the seats near me were a hoot, that always adds to it.

I am a HUGE John Mellencamp fan. I drove from Pittsburgh, PA to Windosr, On for the show. As usual John gave his all. My only disppointment was that he didn't play very long. The show was a little under 1 1/2 hours long. Other than that, it was a good show. John interacted with the crowd, signed some autographs during the show and even talked to someone on a fan's cell phone. I am upset i didn't have my camera with me!

John had an incredible opportunity to put on a show for the ages. The venue was intimate and the hard-core fan base brought a strong showing. While the material played was great, his decision to play for less than 1 hr 15 min was short sighted. Imagine what he could have sent his fans home with if he had thrown in some jewels like Taxi Dancer, Jackie Brown, Sugar Marie, A Little Night Dancin' or The Great Midwest? What about playing some of the music that influenced him? And what about a little experimentation with his band, in the spirit of his early club days when I am sure that took place? A few in each of those categories and he could have put on an amazing 2 hour show that would not have left anybody hungry for more. Again, what he played was great, he just needed to play more.

As usual, John was awesome. It is to bad the crowd sucked!!! John is such an incredible artist and musician, to bad the crowd didn't appreciate him. The crowd wanted all the usual "pop" songs and if you truly are a fan of John's, you want to hear the "other " songs that make John Mellencamp the artist he is. Love John. Windsor not so much love!

John mixed in old and new songs, but collectively sang for only an hour and 15 minutes. Many of his classic songs (I need a lover, Ain't Even Done with the Night, etc.) were absent, perhaps because he admitted he can't hit the high notes anymore. The energy and enthusiam from past shows at DTE Energy Center (4 star concerts) was absent. I was expecting a lot more.

sorry to say, but it was JM at his worst. had great seats (row 9) and was really excited to see him again live. for ticket price, though, it was a ripoff. the performance started 20 min late and he played only one set for a total of about 1hr, 15min. seemed apathetic, phoning it in; just kind of lackluster performance overall. also, not sure if it was the band or the venue, but the sound quality was really poor... murky, muddied, not crisp and clear. hate to say it, but maybe it's time for JM to just kick back and tend the farm in IN. finally, the venue needs some serious work with (person) traffic flow getting out of the auditorium. seemed like there were only about three double doors for egress, so we just stood there for about 20 minutes not going anywhere.

We could have stayed another hour for sure and I'm positive he would have done so if allowed. It was just a good night with good friends, good food, and good music. Good job John and the band.

Willie Nelson opened the show and was just grand. Mellencamp played second, then Dylan exploded onto the stage. Dylan really brings back the old days of rock and roll with this band. It's twist and shout all the way through. We've never seen him live before this show, therefore, we were at first put off by the gravelly voice, almost unrecognizable from his recorded singing voice. But after about one minute, we forgot all about that because.... he's Bob Dylan. He performed mostly his new music, which is old time rock and roll, with the tightest band we've ever heard, up until the end of the performance when he suddenly exploded into "Like a Rolling Stone" and "All Along the Watchtower", which blew us right out of our seats.

We really liked this venue, and John Mellencamp was great, but far too short of a concert. He didn't even play ROCK in the USA. That was a disappointment. And, as with a lot of the artists, they are mixing their political views in the show. Most people go to these concerts to escape reality, in addition to hearing their fav music.

Awesome concert! Carlene Carter was a great opening act. Emmy Lou Harris? What can I say...I have had a crush on this woman for 40 years and love her music. Emmy Lou and her band The Red Dirt Boys were fantastic. John Mellencamp's set kicked-ass. He did an amazing job of mixing old classics with new music, and also mixed it nicely regarding musical styles (rock, ballad, bluesy). He also brought Carlene Carter and Emmy Lou out during his set. This was our first trip to the Ironstone Ampitheater in Murphys. What a wonderful venue. We will be back.

Carlene Carter opened with her strong vocals and acoustic shredding guitar playing. She is a fantastic performer. John Mellencamp has an awesome stage presence and is a real musical craftsmen. He is not your typical egotistical performer and acknowledged his band mates contribution throughout the evening. His new music is great and the mix of oldies brought down the house.

This was the 4th time I have seen John Mellencamp. This time my seats were in nose bleed section and I had to take binoculars, but even from the distance his sound team did an amazing job and the event was as enjoyable as it was when I saw him 34 years ago (Heart opened for him) with much closer seats. The flavor of the new album is great and he played some of his older music making it everything it was plus the smooth and deep sounds that he is now playing. The mix of old and new was just right and he had the whole audience standing multiple times. Thanks for a wonderful evening John Mellencamp - it was really good to see you play again and I hope you're around doing this for a long time to come. You give the audience a value for their money and that is appreciated.

I knew John Mellencamp would put on a good show. I didn't know he'd put on a great one. The man, and his six-piece band, are professional rockers. They are note perfect, powerful, and play off each others' strengths like a well-oiled machine. And why shouldn't they be tight? Guitarist Mike Wanchic has been with Mellencamp for 40 years! Violinist Miriam Sturm for over 20. There were (most of) the hits you'd expect (or demand) to hear - after all these years you kind of forget just how many he's had - and plenty of new songs too in the nearly two hour set. While most of them were played seriously, even he's now laughing at "Jack and Diane," doing it solo acoustic, while the rest of the band took a quick break. "I don't know why I even play this thing anymore, other than that you expect it," was part of the intro. He then let the audience do most of the work, laughing and correcting them when they launched into the chorus after the first verse. "No, the chorus doesn't come until after the second verse! If I'd known then that you wanted to go right to the chorus I could have saved a lot of time and trouble coming up with that second verse." Show opener Carlene Carter came back on to join John and the band on a couple of numbers from Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a musical that Mr. Mellencamp wrote with Stephen King (yes, that Stephen King). Rumor is that once the tour is over, Mellencamp and Carter will be recording a duets album together. The show continued and rocked some more. I thought it was coming to a crescendo when the Walls Came a-Tumblin' Down, but it just continued to build from there. The entire audience were on their feet screaming along with the last several numbers. He Fought Authority, and I swear this time he won. Now let's talk about opening act Carlene Carter, who I've been in love with since 1979, but never had a chance to see before. Her performance was worth the 35 year wait. Just her and her guitar (and occasional piano) was enough to fill the hall with raw country emotion and rock 'n' roll power. Her new CD, Carter Girl, is a tribute to her family, so the show was full of stories of learning to play guitar from grandma, Maybelle Carter, getting songwriting advice from her mother, June, and watching them perform with the rest of the Carter Family. She shared how her life changed when her mom married "Big John" (Cash), growing the family, but keeping the roots close to home and their music. Most of the Mellencamp audience may not have known who that Carter Girl was when she stepped out on stage, but by the time she was done they were cheering every song, laughing at all her stories, and singing along with (her great uncle) A.P. Carter's version of "Can the Circle Be Unbroken (By and By)." Great show - Recommended, and then some.

First off, Carlene Carter opened the show & then sang two songs with John & his band, She was fantastic and this comes from someone who does not had an album or follow her. I knew her early career & that is about it. John and his 6 piece band were great! I believe he did 24 songs, playing about an hour & 45 minutes. Minutes to Memories, Authority Song, Check It Out, Pink Houses, Small Town Paper In Fire, and the last song of the night Cherry Bomb stand out in my mind. There are always songs that I wished someone would have played, John included but I was happy when I left. The set design & the outfits they wore was good, The last time I saw him was about 1988. This is a tour you should see if you are a Mellencamp fan.

About four songs into his Plain Spoken Tour set, John Mellencamp proclaimed, "I was born in a small town," and the theater erupted with applause. For the rest of the almost two hour set, people clapped, sang, danced, and reminisced. The show was tight, the band loose and jammin', and the atmosphere sizzled with the sound of folk/roots/rock 'n' roll. I've always liked Mellencamp's non-nonsense approach to music.Even when he started adding "too many" instruments back in the late '80s, his music still crackled with populist hope and a genuine affection for the common man. A lot has happened to John Mellencamp and American music since his first hit ("Hurt So Good") back in 1982, but he has aged gracefully, remaining as passionate and honest in his music as he was determined to shuck the "Cougar" surname and return to his own ethnic roots. Except for a lackluster sound system (the lyrics were often garbled), the concert was sharp, energized, and fun. His political message still clear, Mellencamp proves that some rockers get better with age. And his refusal to do the standard "fake exit" that begs for an encore was refreshing. I'd see him again in a heartbeat. Great show!

I've been going to see John Mellencamp in concert since the mid-80s and he never, NEVER disappoints. The song selection (mix of old and new), the stories (I love stories about his grandmother), his INCREDIBLE band (Hello Miriam!!!), it's just first class all the way. At 63, with a heart attack (or 2?) behind him - the man can still dance and rock. I really can't say enough good things about this John Mellencamp concert. He is a MUST see. MUST MUST MUST see. I only took the six pictures below - no flash EVER. That's just disrespectful to the artist and distracting to others around you. Besides, who wants to watch a concert from behind a camera?!

I was a bit concerned since reading many bad reviews about how John doesn't play enough of his older hits to please his aging crowd. So wrong! He played just enough newer songs and they were ALL great! He ended up playing a dozen from the 80's & 90's, which really brought down the house. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening (aside from the group of obnoxious drunkards sitting behind us). The Saenger is such an awesome venue and a perfect setting for some Mellencamp rock!

This show is full of old and new. While you may not know some of the new songs, the quality of the songwriting and composition is brilliant. NOTHING beats "Crumblin' Down" during a live concert.....amazing!

John played most of his new album then what seemed like a second half played all of the hits. He had a very tight band and his voice held well throughout (seemed to get better as the show went on).

I thought he was tentative at first, vocally, but as he warmed up, he fully arrived and it was the JCM that we always have known and loved....the songs, the conversation, the dancing, the attitude----just fantastic!

John Mellencamp played a full 2 hour set that had the crowd on its feet cheering as he played long time favorites that energized the crowd wanting to hear music that struck at the core of being an American. My only disappointment was him not playing an encore. There was at least two rock anthems he could have played but didn't. Still I'd highly recommend seeing him if he has a show near you

Had the pleasure of attending the John Mellencamp concert at the AARP convention in San Diego. He's still just as rockin' as he was back in the day. Played all the classics and some nice acoustic tunes. He let the audience sing all the chorus lines for him and you could see the ultimate pleasure in his face when we blared out the lyrics\u2026 perfectly. Los Lobos and Mavis Staples were great lead in guest performers. I had my front paws up on the stage for the entire concert. Cool thing about Mellencamp\u2026. he refuses to play if there are stanchions or barricades in front of the stage. He likes to interact up close and personal with his fans. These barriers were up for the previous performers. Staff had to remove them before Mellencamp came on stage. Rock on John (always the Cougar) Mellencamp!

man, this was a good concert. all great musicians. especially enjoyed the drummer. his kit was weathered and worn. cymbal stands look like they'd been stored out in the rain and you could tell that kit has been thru the mill. they milked it for all it's worth because it sounded incredible. those two fender amps (tone master and a super sonic) sounded awesome!!! he didn't do an encore which was a bummer, but every tune he sang was top notch. love to see him again. first time i've ever seen him. GREAT SHOW!!!!

Great show! But no encore, really John??? That was a big disappointment for everyone. Also curious abbout the statue of Jesus that was displayed on stage... was this in honor of his Grandma? The stories John told during the show, were unique and personal and allowed his fans to get to know him a bit! Also enjoyed the "sing-a-longs!. All in all a great show, but it was obvious everyone was let down by no encore. Band members were awesome and were gracious enough to let us chat and take pictures with them in one of the areas of the Casino after the show. We love you John and we love your songs! A true Midwest FAN!

Excited about the concert. He played a handful of Great old songs and then...70 minutes after it started...he walked off the stage and BANG, the lights were on...it was over. Super shocked and disappointed. As was everyone else. No opening act, no encore, nothing. Love him but, can't recommend his 2014 tour.

John Cougar was the first concert I ever attended back in 1983 for the Uh-Huh tour at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. It took Cougar 30 years to come back to San Jose but it was worth the wait. Although this was a award presentation/interview/performace show, it was still awesome to get his perspective on his music and life in general. A rare oppurtunity to really get inside the head of John Cougar Mellencamp in a beautiful theatre. Then he came out and belted a 1/2 hour set that left us craving more, John at 60 you still got it, keep rocking and I cant wait till you come back to the bay area !!!

Finally got to go see John Mellencamp. He was getting the John Steinbeck award in San Jose,Ca. What a wonderful venue it was, the California Theater is gorgeous and the whole evening was unforgettable. Mellencamp has a warm and witty personality and listening to him talk about his life makes you understand his music even more. Thank you John "Cougar" Mellencamp for sharing such a special occasion with us, you are so deserving of the award. Rock On!

I expected the rocker of yesteryear...but I got so much more. A little rockabilly, a little acoustic and a lot of rock 'n' roll! Exceptionally talented. I left knowing I got all the hits I came for and a whole lot more! I did not, however, care for the preview film.

I thought that the movie before the concert was a little long. It was interesting, but kind of dragged on. Could have done without the 20 minute intermission after the movie. The concert itself was great!! Non stop energy, and he sounded as great as ever.

The hour long film to open the show was horrible at best. It was intentionally grainy to give it the retro look but it came off as totally annoying rather than artistic. The accompanying narration was as irritating as hearing nails scraping on a chalk board. I'm a great Mellencamp fan but this film was awful. As for the concert, John is still amazing. His new album is terrific and his older stuff still stands the test of time. He looked great with his new shorter hair cut and he was dressed in a dark blue suit and gray dress shirt, no tie. He did have the collar of his suit jacket turned up and he looked good. He played several songs accoustically, namely Jack & Diane and Little Pink Houses, which was a little disappointing since the full versions are so powerful. All in all though, John put on a great show and I would definitely see him again.

I've been a LONGGGG time fan of John C Mellencamp...Love Him and his music. The Omaha show was good but he didn't sing near enough of his old songs. I understand he likes to incorporate his new stuff into his performance also...but us oldies sure do like his oldies!!! Here's to you JM!!!

Self indulgent maybe but worth every minute. I don't know if I've ever seen a self promoting film before a concert before but I rather liked it. Mostly it was nice to be introduced to the band during the film just before the live portion began. I already knew I like John Mellencamp. It is as though he doesn't know we know just how good or appreciated he is. Still it worked. The crowed went crazy for that show. Yes John you are great. He didn't get political once, just great song after great song. My only wish is it would have been better with an encore song or two.

I have seen John Mellancamp several times and as of yet, have not ever been dissappointed. Mellancamp and his band memebers are entertaining and connect with the audience each time. Always bringing something new to the performance so as not to be redundant. Amazing ! Loved it !

John Mellencamp has been writing songs, recording, and touring for 40 years and he just keeps getting better with age. He's the rocker from the heartland. Genuine, authentic, and works really hard at delivering a great experience for his fans. The set had a nice mix of old and new tunes, some with a different spin (like Jack & Diane with a country vibe) and the crowd was standing and singing along most of the evening.

I saw Mellancamp about 5 years ago. Awesome show. The best I had ever been to and I go to many concerts at different venues. This particular concert was not good. I hyped this show to my boyfriend for months and we were so excited to be going. His new album is depressing and that is what this show promoted. He hardly played any of his "famous" stuff. I would not recommend a show like this.

I am a HUGE Mellencamp fan and have seen him a total of 6 or 7 times. His performance on Friday night at Verizon was good but not his best. I do prefer when he had his numerous back up singers which added a lot to his performance and show. This was a more getting down to the basics tour. He appeared to be much more at ease and has become much more appreciative of things with age. I saw him several years back at Starplex with The Wallflowers. Jacob Dylan was so stoned he could barely stand and Mellencamp was just going through the motions. It was the same Mellencamp I had seen many times before but he had no enthusiasm or love of the music. Age has been good to John Mellencamp. He has grown to appreciate things and jokes often about his youth. The concert was a little slow getting started but still enjoyable. I will always love him and continue to see him every time he comes to Dallas.

The answer is Mellencamp, albeit an older wiser one. The casual fan who only wants to hear Jack and Diane or Smalltown is going to be disappointed because some hits were left out, but the true quality of John poured through the songs. His band is great and they feed off of John and vice versa. A few great stories and you have to love his embrace of being the Older Little Bastard. A great treat for any Mellencamp fan is the way he modernizes the classics like Jack and Diane with totally different beats and melody lines. A must see. Only issue was the 6 idiot teenage girls that knew 3 songs and stood in front of my wife and I talking, texting and Facebooking, and the 16 year old who held up a sign all night that said, "Pick Please!!!". Even this major beating was not nearly enough to keep us from taking away great memories of a great night with one of my favorite songwriters. If there is anyway possible, you have to go.

Great venue! Great seats! JM performed for over 2 hours and it was excellent! The entire band was great! JM puts 200% into his shows, and I loved every minute! The new remixes of older songs was refreshing and they made you want to dance! New material even better live! I have fallen in love with JM and his music all over again!

We have been going to John's concerts for over 30 years and my wife and I agree this was the best one yet. John has such an amazing presence on stage and all the songs are perfectly performed. The band is as good as ever. Don't miss seeing this show. We hope he keeps on writing and performing for years to come. It was well worth travelling from Ohio to Jacksonville for this show.

I am so incredibly grateful that John Mellencamp went back on tour! This concert was exceptional from the beginning to the end and no one wanted it to be over.
