Best concert we've been to in years! Kathy is a delightful story teller (and very very funny!), an amazingly soulful singer, an enormously accomplished musician and she just keeps getting better and better, as she continues to study and work on her craft. She had us laughing and crying. It was like spending an evening in our living room, with an old friend. I will never miss an opportunity to see her again and again.

It's been a while since I heard Kathy "in concert" but her sound, style and stage persona were never better. Went home afterwards and plugged a couple of Kathy's older CDs into my dash so I can relive the evening when I want..

Been a huge fan, but first time I've seen her live. Loved all the songs she played, especially Goin' Gone! Bill Cooley is a virtuoso on the guitar. Sound quality was excellent. First time also for the Birchmere, but definitely not the last. The whole setup makes the concert experience exceptional.

Loved seeing a true WV native who has become very successful in life and remembers her roots. The other groups were equally inspiring although Or, The Whales was not what I would consider a folk or country oriented group.

We enjoyed the show very much. I went with two girlfriends (left the husbands home) to a girls night out and had a great time. Kathy has a beautiful voice and Bill was very talented also. We have seen her before at the Birchmere and Wolftrap and she never disappoints. After the show, she was very personable and spoke with each of her fans as long as they wanted. She is a gem - like another favorite, Suzy Bogguss. Thanks Birchmere for another great performance artist.

Pretty amazing performance by one of my old favorites. She works so hard on stage and seems to enjoy every minutes of it. Her guitarist Bill Cooley is something special, also. They obviously have spent a lot of time together over the years to get to where they play so effortlessly together. Glad to see Bill is teaching her some guitar licks. Older crowd. Not many under Social Security age. Hope she come back soon before all her old fans are gone.

Awesome show. Played longer than expected. Good mix of classic hits and new album, which focuses on Kathy's roots in WV. Kathy also has a warm, funny and engaging personality, which was very unexpected. I can't wait until the next show; I'll be there.

Kathy Mattea Featuring Bill Cooley was disappointing for me. She kept saying that she liked not having the really talented band on stage for a change. She needed them. She sang dark gloomy songs about death & coal mines over & over. She talked about dead people over & over. Including her dead voice coach that had just passed away. She ask for song request & then did not sing them. I left feeling her show stressed & depressed.

Thought Kathy and her backup guitarist were better than her large band performance. This intiment approach allowed Kathy to connect with the audience and to be herself, if you liked her performances in the past, you'll love Kathy Mattea now.

We've seen Kathy many times, but this was the first with just her and Bill Collins. We really loved their arrangements and his guitar work is AMAZING - it was great to hear more of his playing featured, and Kathy's instrumental work was more complex than in past. Just sounded great. Her voice is still strong and resonant - not sure what she was so concerned about last year!

What a voice. Kathy and her band put on such a nice show. Just in case there were first-timers in the audience, she sang the old hits in the first set. In the second set, they concentrated on Christmas tunes. It was a wonderful start to the Christmas season.

This is not my first Mattea concert. She never disappoints! This event was her first Christmas concert of the season. The evening was filled with several of her standards along with many songs from her Christmas collection. There were even a few new unreleased pieces. The 5 piece band including Kathy for this concert are all over the top talented. Many emotional moments. And yes, it was a great evening with Kathy Mattea!

Saw Kathy and her band of 4 for the first of her Christmas shows for 2015. She sang some of her big hits and recent "roots" music; the majority were her Christmas songs. They were all just wonderful. She even battled through some issues in the mixing booth and was as professional and delightful as ever. Her voice was beautiful and expressive. Her joy in sharing her talents with strangers was infectious and it's impossible to leave her performance not feeling better. Her band members were all excellent and added to the thoroughly enjoyable evening that lasted over an hour and a half. If you get the chance to see her, do it!

I'm a frequent fan of acoustic artists, especially at the Saenger, it's a great venue for that type of performer... I've seen Jackson Browne, Nickel Creek, Emmylou Harris, Josh Turner, Tift Merritt, etc..... all great artists, but none better than this lady! Her stage voice is her recorded voice, you won't be disappointed! In addition, you won't leave with "ear fatigue" , the musicianship in this group prevents that from happening....

Kathy Mattea sang like a gutsy angel. She chose songs from her new CD and from her Grammy-winning CD "Coal," and also cheerfully accommodated a number of audience requests from her huge catalogue. She accompanied herself ably on guitar and banjo, but also performed with an incredible, multi-talented band which included a mandolin/fiddle player with a high tenor for harmonies, a double bass player who sang harmony, and a guitarist/bouzouki player who also sang harmony. Each person in the band delivered jaw-dropping performances; hats off to Kathy Mattea for giving them lots of room to shine individually. Mattea made us feel like we were just hanging out with her on a porch, laughing at her wry wisecracks, sharing her awe at having spent time with some of the traditional folk world's leading writers and songcatchers. I can't imagine a way that this concert could've been any better than it was.

This concert was so totally different than I expected. I am a long time Kathy Mattea fan & love real Country music (not what passes for it know). The show opened with the wonderful sounds of Sierra Hull and her Mandolin and I listened in awe of her voice and musical ability, a wonderful start to an awesome night. When Sierra left the stage the applause was deafining. Then within a few minutes Kathy Mattea came out along with Sierra Hull and a band made up of students of Berklee. The energy and enjoyment that the students and Kathy Mattea had together with her songs arranged around the Berklee students talents and vocal stylings was one of the most fun and enjoyable concerts I have ever been to, it even had a spectacular Tuba Solo. Never would have expected that. Kathy mattea spent the week mentoring and working with those kids and seemed so happy & filled with joy & energy, it was an amazing night

Last week I attended my first concert at the Berklee Performance Ctr. I have been a fan of Kathy Mattea s for several years and have always wanted to see her in concert. For those of you who have never heard of her, she is a Country artist who was very popular about 20 years ago. This was THE concert to see her. Apparently, as part of a program at the Berklee College of Music, Kathy came in for a week of workshops, classes and rehearsals for this concert. She was backed by an ensemble of about 20 students and a couple of faculty. She couldn t stop talking about how cool it was to meet and work with such talented people. One of the students wrote the string arrangements to some of her songs and he conducted the students while she sang. Kathy made a point to introduce students who had feature solos. A couple of times, after she finished a song, she would look at the audience and say ‘I have the best job in the world! She was so inclusive as she performed with the students, smiling and making faces with them. Kathy sang several songs I knew: ‘The Battle Hymn of Love , ‘Untold Stories , 18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses and ‘Where ve You Been . She said they changed some of the arrangements to take advantage of all the talented students. They ended the concert with a very different but cool version of the Rolling Stone s song ‘Gimme Shelter . I need to pay attention to the concert schedule at Berklee, especially the student concerts. This is where you re going to hear the monster musical artists of the future.

When I saw how low the ticket price, I was afraid it was a Berklee "recital" with a few Kathy Mattea songs mixed in. I am so sorry that hall wasn't packed. It was a night of wonderful musicianship. There were strings, a chorus of back-up singers, traditional instruments, all taking their turn, all supporting the talented and generous Kathy Mattea. Have you ever heard 18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses with a reggae beat? There was no grandstanding, just a well-coordinated and professionally orchestrated evening of pure musical entertainment. Although it was only a couple of hours, it felt like a day at a music festival.

Kathy appeared in an intimate setting at the Ogle Center on the campus of the Indiana University Southeast. Although the theater was small, the audience greeted Kathy and her simply amazing band warmly. The show was sprinkled with songs from Mattea's latest work, the Grammy-nominated Coal, but also had a liberal helping of her older hits from her days as a country music hitmaker. Her three man band are quite simply some of the best musicians in the business--Bill Cooley, guitar player extraordinaire, David Spicer, bass player, and Eammon O'Roarke, who plays the fiddle and mandolin. It's astounding how much sound comes out of such a small number of players. Their sound is so cohesive that it really sounds as if it's coming from one instrument. Kathy, an incredibly talented vocalist, also is a gifted guitar player who jokes that she wouldn't hire herself to play with the band.

We attended a Kathy Mattea concert at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights Ohio last night. What a great show; this is our third Kathy Mattea concert, the others were in Pittsburgh and we even traveled to Louisville Ky once! She is so warm and so talented, and we loved the acoustic approach this time. Cain Park, Evans Amphitheater, is a great venue; what a pleasure all the way around! We just hope she keeps on going for a long long time. I want to be 75 (now 46) and still going to her shows. A class act, incredible vocalist, interpreter of songs. We adore her!

We have been fans of Kathy's for many years. The songs from the new album, Coal, are beautiful but a little bit depressing for a beautiful summer night. None the less, her voice is strong and she puts on a great concert.

It was a sweltering night at Cain Park but Kathy Mattea's smooth alto was reassuring on a night when lightning flashes could be seen behind the stage. The show was primarily a mixture of older Mattea songs and many from her new album Coal. On a personal level I thought the older songs worked better. Although the idea of a concept album is somewhat interesting and Mattea really brought out the pathos of the songs, there were just too many showcased in this set which tended to drag things down a bit. My recommendation would be to cut 2 of the songs from Coal out of the set and add some more relatable songs from her catalog. A couple of suprises that worked well were the inclusion of the lovely, "Summer of my Dreams," and the Celtic tinged, "Ready for the Storm," which were especially perfect for this night. Mattea's comments to the audience came across as unscripted and very relatable and she really gave some insight into the songs she was singing rather than the traditional star patter. I have seen her numerous times before and she always puts on a professional show with beautiful vocals, fine instrumentalists and she brings real integrity to her music. You can't go wrong attending a Kathy Mattea show.

What a fantastic event! My husband and I had never been to Cain Park-Northeast Ohio's best kept secret! The venue was a perfect setting for Mattea's intimate musical style- she drew the audience in and captured our attention for the entire show. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as she performed her signature song " Where Have You Been?". Her new songs from "Coal" were stiring, and the musicians performing with her were truly talented.

Kathy Mattea was glad to be away from the horrible flooding in Nashville and countering its heavy effects with the power of music. She was thrilled with the crowd and the Birchmere too. Mattea played with another guitarist, a bassist, and a mandolinist/fiddler. Warm, beautful acoustic music, touching on her best-known songs as well as moving songs from her recent CD "Coal." Very conversational, funny at times, poignant at others. She seems like a wonderful person. Her alto was strong and rich, and she's a better guitar player herself than I'd given her credit for. A great show.

I've enjoyed Kathy in concert before so I was dissappointed this time. I understand she wants to promote her new CDs but I was looking forward to hear the songs that I've enjoyed for years. The concert was very depressing. I know with what has happened with the miners and the floods in Nashville there was reason to sing about it BUT not every song. Hopefully next time she will stay more upbeat.

Who would think that an incredible classical orchestra and an ecceltic folk/country singer could intermingle with such harmony? But, when the Charlotte Symphony did their rendition of "Orange Blossom Special" all doubts went out the door and into the rainy night! Kathy. her talented band, and The Symphony united to form an amaizng musical event. The trio reshaped each lyrical note and this new sound served to enhance Kathy's songs so that the beauty of the violins, cellos, etc. took her sound to a resounding new experience. It was beautiful. It was moving. It was fantastic. It was a once in a lifetime moment not to be missed.

What a great experience. The musicianship was incredible, the Symphony and its conductori were "on," and Kathy Mattea put on an incredible show. Her voice was as strong and sororous as ever, her manner with the audience was freindly and engaging, and she tooks some wonderful musical risks that few performers would take (like singing one of her songs a capella). Although I've enjoyed listening to and following Kathy Mattea's music the last time I saw her in concert was the early 1990s. I was pleased to find she hasn't lost her ability to connect with the audience and think her voice has only become stronger with time. It's obvious her latest CD (Coal) has songs with which she relates personally and that makes her delivery all the better. I'm a fan of stripped down, acoustic shows which this one was and really fit the songs, and showcased her voice and band. Overall a great concert in a great venue (Kimo) - If you like Kath Mattea you'll love this show.
